The Redeemer Cut

When we consider the work of Christ in and through us, we often only focus on the "outer" works of giving to the poor, evangelism, or volunteering at our churches. While those are very good things, we often miss the importance of the "inner" works of our own emotional and spiritual health. The work of Christ is to be wholeness, completeness, and peace to every aspect of our being and our world. We cannot forsake the work of processing our emotions or practicing presence.

Our very own Leya Martinez just came back from a trip with friend to visit Southeast Asia in hope of planning a mission trip for next year. Tune in to hear about her adventures!

In this episode of The Cut, Leya and Bryce are back to discuss his sermon about rhythms of Sabbath rest. All over Scripture, we see these rhythms, from the beginning of Genesis in the Garden, to the life of Jesus, and to the final rest in Revelation in the Garden Restored. The prevalence of these rhythms clues us into our desperate need for true rest where we are no longer defined by productivity but rather as children of the Lord Most High. Unfortunately, in a society driven by success and production, it can be difficult to intentionally break away to rest, so we hope that you are encouraged to try resting for just a small amount of time at first until it becomes a regular rhythm in your life.

In this episode of The Cut, Leya introduces our new Student Pastor Brian Kane! We are so excited to welcome him into the Redeemer fold! The conversation begins with Brian introducing himself and telling a little bit of his story. Then, the conversation shifts to how we manage self-pity and seek out community as a means of avoiding this alternate side of pride. We hope that as you listen you are encouraged to continue seeking a good community who will support you in every circumstance and that you find new ways to show grace toward yourself and others.

In the 6th episode of The Cut, Leya invites Bryce Ballard on to discuss his sermon about community. We need a community of people around us who can be our support, challenge us to grow, and help uncover who we truly are. Unfortunately, like many things, community has its problems and it requires us to practice a great deal of patience with ourselves and others. Community doesn't just occur in a few seconds of passive interaction, it requires work, and we hope that you are encouraged to stick it out while the community around you forms and grows.

In this episode of The Cut we invited guest hosts Bill Jolley, Lyndsey Jolley, and Jodi Thomas on to discuss Bill's sermon on John 10:10. This episode also features Jodi's testimony which is heavily influenced by the verse, and a special segment from Lyndsey about the power of two-way journaling. In this episode, Jeff and Leya invite producer, Carter Wine, to join the conversation about pain & suffering. Everyone experiences pain & suffering, so with a topic so easy to resonate with, we wanted to help reframe some potentially harmful language. Often times we try to fix the problem for someone by trying to say the exact, right thing, but that often causes more harm. Living with the reality of pain & suffering can seem like evidence of a God who doesn't care about you, or that he is punishing you. While this is a rather heavy topic, we hope that you can find encouragement as you listen, that you can encounter the God who weeps with you and is always with you.

In the third episode of "The Cut," Jeff and Leya discuss how the Bible views slavery and the value of women. Does the Bible really condone slavery? Are women really expected to be quiet and subservient? Did God really say those things? How do we wrestle well with these topics and find greater grace and a bigger God?

Women Supporting Jesus' Ministry: 

Luke 8:2-3 (NIV) – "And also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means."

Over the last few years, there has been a growing movement of people speaking out about church hurt and spiritual abuse and the effects it has had on their daily lives and spiritual lives. Hurting people often get trampled over by well-meaning comments and others trying to avoid being tarnished by negative attention. In this episode, Jeff and Leya discuss the effects of not just experiencing the hurt, but also the effects of being silenced. They also discuss some things you should and should not do as the person who caused the hurt and the person who has been hurt.

While we cannot wash away all of the hurt and pain that is caused by intentional and unintentional hurt, we hope to reveal the person who is hurting. The person who just needs someone to listen and not fix everything. The person for whom Jesus weeps with and longs to comfort.

In the inaugural episode of "The Cut," Jeff and Leya discuss how doubt is often a vital part of a person's spiritual journey. There has been much conversation around the topic of wrestling with doubt and it often turns into people taking sides and vilifying the "other." In this episode, we hope to change the conversation by helping each other to see the "human" behind the questions who is on a journey of seeking deeper faith.
