The Stop Depression Summit – A Summit Worth Attending.
When I started The Road To Mental Wellness in February of 2019, the goal was a simple one. Help myself through the darkest moments of my mental health battle and try to help others along the way.
I am very proud to say that I have accomplished both of those missions. I not only surpassed my own expectations, but I have reached even more people with my book, also entitled The Road To Mental Wellness.
Sadly however, I am not well enough to tackle all this mental health stuff for more than a few hours a day. Yet, despite this fact, I am putting what energy I do have into it, whilst at the same time knowing my limits.
And that’s what matters. All I need is time to heal, a passion and a purpose to keep me going. And Wala, I have a life worth living.

In February Jonathan will be a speaker at this Stop Depression summit. A summit that will provide those in attendance with the most up to date information on the subject of depression.
I am honored to be taking part in such a wonderfully resource rich summit with some of the foremost experts in the field.

Why I hate Tic Toc
Why I hate Tic Tok- Are we destroying our selves and the very fabric of society? Here’s some food for thought.
Man, what a world we live in. I mean these computers and their modern-day capacities, I can bank from my phone, turn off my lights at home from work, and use GPS to get around? It’s mind blowing when you think about it. None of these amazing technologies were around when I was a kid
For me, the early to mid-eighties were the golden years of my childhood. And in those days, so too was the height of my imagination. Man, I’d love to have that vibrant and rich imagination today. As a content creator, this would be of a tremendous benefit to my work. Alas, adulthood has a way of eroding the power of daydreaming for example. So, like millions of modern adults, I do my best with what this mid-life brain has at its disposal.
Regardless of the dulling down effect brought on by the decades of mental illness, bills, and everyday life, 1980 something was my heyday. At least in a stress-free and creative sense.
I and many kids of that age grew up on the idea that the future was going to be amazing. More than that though, human life was going to be filled with hope and ease. (Kinda like a typical childhood). We grew up on Transformers, the Jetsons, G.I. Joe, and Star Trek. They all provided us with a moral lesson and a hope for peace.
Alternatively, we also had movies like The Terminator, Judge Dread, and Robocop. These films showed a very bleak and hopeless future thanks to tech. Personally, all of them held my attention and scared the life out of me, all at the same time.

Healing with your bros
Healing with your bros – This often-overlooked thing can be just as helpful for men as talking it out can be for others. So, get together and hang with your bros!
“Men, we need to talk more. We can’t stay silent about our innermost demons.” As a counselor and mental-health writer, man, and advocate, I couldn’t agree more. Taking time to battle what’s taking you apart from the inside is indeed helpful. My advice? Seek actual therapy to tackle what ails you. Trust me, my man friends, therapy is a safe one-on-one place. It’s perfect for those who don’t like to bare their souls to others.

We Are What We Are
Humans – We are oblivious to what makes us tick, but in reality, we are what we are. Read on to find out what that is
I am, we are only human. But what does to mean to be human? Well, it’s a complicated question with even more complicated answers. Ones I haven’t all the answers to but I, nonetheless, have a few ideas.
While it must be said, I am nowhere near an expert on what makes humans tick, I do however, have some knowledge. As someone who’s a trained counsellor and has worked with highly behavioural; and aggressive individuals for almost two decades, I’ve learned a thing or two.

The Anxiety Quadrium
Welcome back to the #thewellnesstalks. We have a brand-new season - season 4 ep. 1,
On this season opener, we discuss The Anxiety Quadrium - when is being a drill sergeant parent harmful to kids? Similarly, when is being a Helicopter portent gone past the point of helpful?
Find out how increase your odds of raising a better balanced, more resilient child.
Humans operate on a spectrum and aren't really that great at self-evaluation. that is to say that we aren't good at achieving the closes we can come to being balance. Whether it be diet, mental and or physical health, we tend to overcorrect and end up on the deficit end of the spectrum or the surplus side. Either end can arguably be really damaging. So, essentially, the closer we are to the center line, the healthier we are (homeostasis)

Before Queen Elizabeth II sad passing on September 8th, 2022, the world somehow felt anchored. She served as a symbol of strength and constant reassurance for millions. And it’s no wonder. Celebrities and their mental health
How can celebrities and their mental health, create the momentum we need to #endthestigma of mental illness?

Whether you love celebrities and sports athletes or not, their lives are on a different level. And while we may often find ourselves saying, “Why is their lives so much more important?” I think it’s worth taking pause to think about what they have.
Firstly, let’s just think about what they go through. Famous entertainers are constantly inundated with the press, movie promos in God knows how many countries and never have a moment to themselves – I couldn’t do it!......

The guilt of the living.
The guilt of the living (audio blog) - season 3, episode 7 beaks down the toll it takes on a person for being a life-long helper. Is it worth it? Maybe... But you sure can lose a lot by trying to make a difference.
Don't judge me. While I may only be 46 years old, I've lived an entire life. And despite not being able to work any longer, I'm still a human being - I am still worth something. Yet despite this, I feel as though the world is judging me. And in some instances, there have been those who have; condemning me for what they see, me sitting on my ass.......

Parenting from the me principle
As a parent of two beautiful children, I can say that it's no easy task.
However, it's the most amazing thing I have ever done. While this is true,
equally true is the 24/7 worry that comes with it.
And if that weren't enough, built into parenting is a constant fear that you
are fu@#%ng them up. For me personally? It keeps me up at night. More than
that, I'm sure it has shaved time off my life.
That said, I honestly believe that most parents do their best. There are,
however, mistakes made and one of those I find is when parenting from the me
principle is employed.
So, what is parenting from the me principle mean? Listen for my take on the damage selfish parenting can cause

Are Mental Illness Symptoms Really Invisible?
We often here, "Just because it's invisible doesn't mean that it doesn't exist." But is it true that symptoms of mental health conditions are invisible? Or are we just not aware of them enough to pick up on them?
In this episode, I argue that yes, indeed we can see the symptoms, we simply can't see the causes. So, do they have their roots in our physiology? Heart disease does, A brain tumor does, then why not mental illness?
Join me on this episode as we parse through some of my thoughts on the matter.

Mental Illness - It's not what you think it is.
When I was first diagnosed with depression and PTSD back in 2018, people were really supportive and kind. But... as time went on, people became less so. For those who still tried, I was met with them saying things like, "Some else always has it worse." and other well-meaning one liners.
But the reality is, mental illness is tough and its definitely not what you think it is.

Unity - an Antidote for Mental Illness?
Can unity defeat the increase of mental illness worldwide? On my latest episode of #thewellnesstalks, I layout an argument for embracing our similarities rather than being fixated on our differences. But with the prevalence of division being exacerbated by the advent of social media, how can we ever hope to work together? We all have an interest in fighting for better mental health.

Unlocking your potential
On this episode of #thewellnesstalks, discuss unlocking your potential and finding ways to fit in what inspires you. All too often we are self-sacrificing and spend little time pursuing our own passions.
This of course, can hollow one’s love for, not only what they would love to pursue, but it leaves him feeling empty and stressed throughout all areas of their lives.
We are however, much more than we ever realized we are and therefore we do have the power to unlock our potential. You my friend, are no exception to this fact.

What I've Learned from Writing my Book
Finally, after three years I have completed my Manuscript, The Road To Mental Wellness. In this episode I talk about what I've learnt from writing a book.
I am excited to finally present to my subscribers, the first chapter of my book, – Free! The Road To Mental Wellness: A Precursor To Illness. In it, it chronicles where my fight with mental illness began… As a boy…. From there, The Road To Mental Wellness – The book takes you on my journey of the pains and triumphs of my life…. Inspired by both my own battle to get better and to help others living with a mental health condition. Maybe, just maybe it will help those trying to support others to better understand their struggles.

But it's just easier
In episode 5, we discuss the idea that "it's just easier" to avoid what makes you anxious. But is this really true? I argue that tackling your smaller fears, can drastically reduce your anxiety and allow you to live a better life...

Finding Purpose When Mentally Ill
On episode 4 of #thewellnesstalks, we talk about the importance of finding purpose when you're debilitated by a mental health condition. Is it really the end? I would argue but the answer is no. However, how we move forward in life will look much different then who we used to be. Remember, no matter how limited your energy is, you still get to choose where you put it. You can find a new purpose.
Thank you for tuning in.

Exercise - Mother Nature's Medication
Is medication the only option to minimize the debilitating symptoms of a mental health condition? Or do we have options? The answer is, of course we do. But what is best for one may not be as effect for others. In my case, running was the breakthrough treatment. I taught myself how to run and over time, its effects were amazing. So much so, I now call exercise mother nature's medication..
While it may not be easy, pushing past what makes us uncomfortable is the key to getting down the road to mental wellness..... have a listen and see if running is best for you.

Fractured, a system in need of care How do we fix the mental health care system
In episode two, season one of the #wellnesstalks, we discuss the two-tiered mental health care system and propose possible solutions to the shortages and the division that is caused by having both a public and private mental health care system. Please like and share if you feel that what we propose can be helpful.

The Road To Mental Wellness - My Story
Back in 2019 I knew my 15 years in the fire service were taking their toll, at that point, I wasn't sure just how close to the edge death and destruction had taken me; what I did understand was, I could no longer let it fester. I knew that I had hit a "do or die" scenario. I choose life, no matter what I had to do, I had to do what I had to live; I wanted to live, I just, as I can't now at times, deal with the pain.
This is where The Road To Mental Wellness was born, a form to tell my story in hopes that it would help others. What started as a book entitled The Road To Mental Wellness, morphed into the blog and finally, into this podcast.......
