Episode 2: Dr. Janette Habashi. After our fascinating insight into Alaa Balkhy’s wardrobe in episode 1, we are so excited to be joined by Dr. Janette Habashi for our second episode.
Dr. Janette Habashi is a professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Oklahoma. She was born in Jerusalem but left to pursue graduate work in England and the United States. But her native West Bank has never been far from her heart. She founded the charity Child’s Cup Full, a non-profit social enterprise that creates sustainable economic opportunities for low-income women artisans in the West Bank. In this episode, we take a closer look into Dr. Janette’s background, her mission of empowering women in the west bank through her fashion brand Darzah, the Palestinian tatreez embroidery, how to preserve tradition and culture in everyday life, Palestinian cuisine, and so much more!
About Darzah: Darzah is a project of Child’s Cup Full, it’s an ethical fashion brand creating authentic, handmade Palestinian products, Using the embroidery style, “tatreez”, a traditional art form passed down through centuries of women. Darzah’s goal is to bring tatreez apparel and decor to the world in order to celebrate and preserve Palestinian heritage.

We are so excited to be joined for the 1st episode by Alaa Balkhy.

Alaa is a Multidisciplinary creative working in the intersection of design, culture, and fashion.

Born in Jeddah and raised in Montreal, the serial entrepreneur works as a cultural consultant, art director, and illustrator. Jetting between NYC and the Middle East, she’s garnered an impressive resume, collaborating with Cartier and Netflix, launching her own fashion label, and being the force behind an ever-growing and game-changing global database of Arab creatives.

In this episode, we take a closer look into Alaa’s heritage and background, her personal dress style, and her signature look. As a representative of her generation, Alaa shares with us her views about the traditional dress, traditional vs modernity, and how can the traditional be sustained for future generations.
