Our guest today is David Daniels! David is currently the Director of Architecture at SSH UAE right here in Dubai. David has been part of the success story of SSH UAE from the very beginning & has helped shape, quite literally, 'the design direction of the practice. These are the two critical points where architects tend to have pivoting moments that determine their thinking, design approach & career path.  To discuss this, we have a double-header! We are joined by Dr. Shaji Panicker. He is currently an associate professor at the school of design and architecture. of the Manipal University in Dubai. Over the past decade, Shaji has taught the students of architecture both in the UAE and in India. This has given him a unique perspective to the teaching methodologies put in place across both countries. He has taught students at both the under-graduate and graduate level. He has seen both the education of architects and the mindset of students, change, over his time as an educator.  In addition, we are also joined by another familiar face, or in our listeners case, a familiar voice! Rahul Sudheer joins us yet again to share his thoughts on the subject. When we last spoke, Rahul was with the prestigious developer, Emaar. Since then, Rahul has been part of many ground breaking projects and currently practices as an Architect with Broadway Malyan. Todays guest is Douglas Sum. He comes with a wealth of knowledge within the facade, or 'building skin' space. With an education from the University of Hong Kong, Douglas has gone on to work with international design firms all across the pacific rim & MENA region and currently is an Associate, Façade Service Group Leader for Aurecon, a global engineering, design and advisory company. A few of his milestone projects would be the Hong Kong Disneyland, The Viceroy on the Dubai Palm, the Dubai Metro and the current tallest building in the World  - the Burj Khalifa in our very own backyard. Also, he has worked as the facade-consultant team-leader on currently,  another super tall, ‘cable-stayed’ building in Dubai – the Dubai Creek Harbour Tower which is designed by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Douglas has held various leadership roles with both consultants and contractors, giving him a unique perspective of design, execution and supervision. He also brings vast knowledge across design management of the same. Currently, his interests expand to innovation and seeking any opportunities to reform the façade design entirely, by using the latest digital technology. Douglas is very active in both the professional and academic space of engineering facades. Having spoken at multiple summits across the globe, Douglas believes in educating the sector and pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in this space. Todays guest is Anique Ahmed. Anique is an architect & an award-winning architectural photographer. With projects like the UAQ martyrs memorial under his belt, Anique now focuses on capturing moments created by architectural & interior design. His architectural photography has been recognized by several international photography competitions and has been featured across various media platforms. One his images of the Autodrome grandstand here in Dubai, has been titled, simply as “G”. Our guest today truly pushes the boundary of architectural design, to infinity and beyond. We are super stoked to have Hatem Al Khafaji join us today! With a relatively ,conventional foundation to his architectural journey, Hatem completed his undergrad in architectural engineering from the University of Sharjah. Whilst in professional practice, Hatem maintained a healthy connection to academic research. He spent 4 months in Japan as a research scholar at the world renowned Tohoku University designing the “Gripper”, the next generation of climbing robots to explore the surfaces of Moon, Mars and near-by Asteroids. Not to mention, having held multiple talks and seminars at universities locally within the country and internationally. Hatem was invited to be a jury member at Google, for the Lunar X-Prize Moon Bots challenge.  In 2015, Hatem came onboard to Killa Design where he has spent his time designing for 'the future'. Being involved with projects like the Museum of the Future and Office of the Future for the Dubai Future Foundation, it is clear that he no signs of slowing down! During a brief sabbatical in 2016, Hatem obtained masters degree in Space Studies at the international space university in France, where he focused his research on utilizing artificial intelligent on developing the next architectural construction methods on extra-terrestrial planets. Since then he has returned to Killa Design, where he currently practices.  Early last year, Hatem went on to setup Space Roasters Inc, an aerospace startup with a twist, pushing the boundary of space and science!.. Oh wait, Did we mention he's given a TEDx Talk on Lunar Architecture in his spare time? Wrote the first book to conclude codes to guide future architects designing on the Moon? Have a space technology design patent registered in the US and UAE? And participated in many NASA competitions, where his work lately exhibited at the famous NASA JPL in Houston, the same center that launched Neil Armstrong to the Moon!?.
