Sustained Motion - On competing against ones self and growing in the process with Robbie Balenger - The Big Run Episode 148
Today's guest is Robbie Balenger. A man not adverse to extreme challenges, his list of multi-stage ultra efforts reads long.
There are iconic races and unusual challenges such as loops around central park and outlasting a Tesla.
Most recently a solo Speed Project effort saw him come in second in that iconic event.
Still, he’s kept the momentum up and switched to crewing for another epic challenge to support Will Goodge as runs across America. An experience he is well versed in having done the challenge himself back in 2019.
Robbie caught up with us a few days ago in the early stages of the effort in Barstow California doing Laundry for the crew - oh the glamour...
You can follow Robbie @robbiebalenger
Find out more about his adventures at www.robbiebalenger.com/
And keep up to date with Will's challenge @williamgoodge where you can follow along, donate and support.

We Can't Run Away from this - On Ultra's, endurance and the environment with Damian Hall
This conversation was recorded not long after he took the win at the spine race, which is certainly up there when it comes to tough. It traces the Pennine way and this year runners were faced with freezing conditions.
In this conversation, we talk through that experience, and hallucinations ultra runners grow accustomed to as well as touch on some of the subjects Damian has uncovered in his most recent book We Can't Run Away from this which explores how we can improve runnings footprint in our climate emergency.

Take your lumps and get right back up - On building the Early Majority with CEO and Founder Joy Howard - The Big Run Episode 132
Firstly some house keeping… *elevator music*
If you are enjoying TBR please do leave us a review on apple or Spotify, it helps the show, plus give our Instagram a follow, where our DMS are open for feedback, collaboration and ideas.
Ok, that's enough of that….
In today's episode…we don’t actually talk about running…
but runners dont talk about running all the time…well sometimes we do…but sometimes we want to be inspired, hear new stories and perspectives and get switched on to an individual, company or worthwhile endeavours that we might not have heard of.
So with that in mind, today id like to share the story of the 'Early Majority'.
They are an outdoor apparel brand, that wants to adopt a degrowth business model where the clothes are only part of the story and the community is at the forefront of how it intends to grow.
What is degrowth? well in a nutshell - we need to make less stuff.
That's why Early Majority have crafted a select set of outdoor apparel garments and accessories that they dub “tools for leaning out”.
It's a super exciting proposition that comes from the mind of founder and CEO Joy Howard who is joining me today.
Joy has had a fascinating trajectory to get to where she is. From a Seattle grunge band to an MBA, to Coca Cola, Converse, Patagonia to taking the plunge and bringing her own company to fruition.
It’s a fascinating story with a lot to take from. So if you’ve ever debated a career change, whilst running, pondered how fashion can do it’s bit to help the environment whilst on the long run, or just like a fascinating person on a podcast then today's ep is for you!

Joining us and taking the imagery that accompanies the episode is Arran McAskill of Curated for Runners.
Amrit is leading the charge for the London efforts of Tracksmith's community program supporting runners getting ready for the marathon with their "100 days" programme.

"I need someone else to tell me those things..." - A real time physio session with International Athlete and Physio Therapist Matt Bergin
Its’ topic is a familiar one for many of us - running injuries. Whether it's a nagging pain in your knee, a twinge in your ankle or a strain in your back, we've all been there. But fear not, because we're here to talk about the next step in your injury recovery journey - visiting the physio! That's right, it's time to put on your bravest face and head to the land of heat packs and ultrasound machines. Buckle up, because this might be a bumpy ride, but the end result is worth it promise!
So, one windy and wet morning I headed to the Victoria Park Harriers clubhouse in Victoria park to see Matt who was in London for clinic sessions.
Matt is a 5000m and 10000m athlete who has competed for Ireland both on the roads and the track. he was English Schools 3000M champ and had a scholarship to complete a Master of Science degree at the university of new Mexico in the united states.
He co-founded the performance team alongside Mark Buckingham and works closely with several past, present, and future Olympians and Paralympians, with Athletics Ireland, the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation, and a professional track team overseas.
However, most of Matt's work is done supporting recreational runners, club-level athletes, and newcomers to the sport looking to stay injury-free, keep fit and remain healthy. He’s worked with Wiggle and Hoka as well as organising running camps in Kenya.
This episode was recorded live during the session and offers insight into how physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat running related injuries. We also about running mechanics in general, the "right way to run" Matt's own history with running and injury and more.
A big thank you to Matt and the performance team for being part of the episode.

Run and Become - On running, spirituality, Sri Chimnoy, film making and more with Sanjay Rawal - The Big Run - Episode 129
Today, we are joined by, Sanjay Rawal.
Sanjay is an accomplished filmmaker, runner and proponent of meditation, spirituality and the teachings of Sri Chinmoy. In this conversation, we discuss how he discovered meditation, its benefits, and how it has helped him in his spiritual journey and his running.
We also share some tips on how to get started with meditation and how to make it a regular practice as well as talk about Sri Chinmoy.
Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) was an Indian spiritual teacher, philosopher, and musician who emigrated to the United States in 1964. He founded the Sri Chinmoy Centre, an international organization that promotes meditation and self-development through spiritual practices, athletics and the arts. He wrote over 1,500 books on spiritual and philosophical topics and composed over 22,000 songs. Chinmoy was also a prolific artist and poet. He was a proponent of self-transcendence, the idea that individuals can transcend their own limitations through spiritual practice and service to others. He also promoted the idea of inner peace as the foundation for world peace and held events to promote peace such as peace meditations, peace concerts and peace runs.
One of his most famous events is the 3100 aka the longest race in the world and the subject of Sanjay's documentary of the same name.
The 3100 Race is a self-transcendence ultramarathon race held annually in New York City. The race is organized by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team and is considered one of the longest-certified footraces in the world. The race starts on June 17th and runs for 52 days until August 7th, participants run as many miles as they can within this time frame.
The 3100 Race is unique in that it is not a traditional race with a set distance or course. Instead, participants are given the opportunity to run as many miles as they can within the 52-day time frame. The goal of the race is for participants to push their own limits and "transcend" their previous personal bests.
the documentary is available for streaming on the following platforms:
Vimeo on Demand (https://vimeo.com/ondemand/3100)
Amazon Prime Video (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QZJ9XRV)

To Run on Feel - A TBR & Man V Miles collboration special feat. Nick Anderson and Dr Michael Crawley - TBR Episode 120
Myself and Kieran Alger have been on a mission to find out if running without a watch… ditching pacing bands and pacing plans to race entirely on feel might be the best way to bag yourself a new PB.
We guinea-pigged ourselves and embraced the concept of racing entirely on feel, covered our watches and ran free from the pressure of data, no splits, no heart rate, no clocks, and definitely no running power readouts. We also spoke to elite coach Nick Anderson from runningwithus.com and running anthropologist and author of Out of Thin Air, Dr Michael Crawley, to dive deeper into the science, the pros and cons of running on feel.
Be sure to check out Kieran's brilliant YouTube video over on his channel for his take on the experiment, this podcast tells that story and features extended interviews with our two experts for deeper dives into the science, physiology and anthropological ideas surrounding our relationship with running and data.
If you're looking for coaching and help with your running check out runningwithus.com. And pick up a copy of Dr Michael Crawley's excellent read Out of Thin Air: amzn.eu/d/bIj6Wk0

2022 Berlin Marathon MVP - Eluid Kipchoge's bottle man - Claus-Henning Schulke
Schulke, 56, is an amateur triathlete and works as a project manager for a Berlin-based construction company. He was a marathoner himself but switched to triathlon in his twenties. He, however, remained a fan of the long-distance event for years. He has been volunteering at the Berlin Marathon since 1998.
When Kipchoge arrived at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Tuesday, September 20 ahead of the marathon on Sunday, September 25, Schulke surprised his dear friend and discussed their bottle-passing strategy for the event. Schulke’s technique is to wear a Kipchoge nameplate on his forearm, which allows Kipchoge to know where his water is and therefore he does not have to break stride or lose focus.
The two first knew each other when Schulke volunteered to be Kipchoge’s water passer in 2018 at the Berlin Marathon. He was instrumental in Kipchoge’s world record performance at the event.
I called Claus yesterday to learn about the historic world record run and his crucial role.
A huge thank you to Claus for taking the time to talk to me

In this conversation we look back on her time as a pentathlete, how she fell into that sport, her struggles with long covid, where she's at with running at the minute and so much more!

"Good things will come" - Healing, distance and the road to Chicago Marathon with Maggie Montoya - The Big Run - Episode 106
Montoya ran Division I track while attending Baylor University leading the college to the NCAA Championships in her final season placing second and earning the All-Region honours at NCAA South Central Regional in a season-best 6,000-meter time of 20:21:7. Following college, Montoya moved to Boulder, CO to join the Roots Running Project, training with fellow Salomon athlete Noah Droddy. Within five years of training with the group, she has hit several personal records, including a 32:06:87 10K that earned her a spot in the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials and a recent 15:19 5K at the MT SAC Relays in April 2022. Montoya has her sights set on the Chicago Marathon in 7 weeks' time.
Maggie has been on a profound journey of healing after surviving a mass shooting at her place of work on March 22nd 2021 where tragically ten people lost their lives. She has been sharing her experience of what happened in order in order to help shift the narrative about how people feel about gun laws.
In this conversation, we talk about that period in her life, her journey into running and her recent signing with Salomon.

'Visibility is Power' - Running, community, art, sexuality and finding your legs with Daniel Marin Medina - The Big Run - Episode 105

Breathe and Move - Nasal breathing, changing careers and running with Kevin McQuaid - The Big Run - Episode 104
You may remember at the start we talked about AI generative art. Inspired by this and encouraged by another artist and listener out in New Zealand (shout out to Logan) I was inspired to use a generate to create this week's podcast cover art.
To create AI art, artists write algorithms not to follow a set of rules, but to “learn” a specific aesthetic by analyzing thousands of images. The algorithm then tries to generate new images in adherence to the aesthetics it has learned.
for this week's guest, I entered the keywords breathe free run strong and applied a cubist filter. It turned out pretty cool I think. You can see the results on IG.
so why breathe free run strong? Well, today's guest has had an exciting journey to arrive on an obsession with breath and its power to change you. After heading up denim at Diesel in the 90s as it had its metoric rise, he changed tack and became a teacher.
Running had always been in his life after being inspired by Zola Budd to run the 1500m at his school barefoot. But when he came across breathe work and nasal breathing things really stepped up.
Ladies and gentlemen Im delighted to welcome Kevin Mcquaid

In this conversation, we talk about A.I generative art, his career as a skateboarder, working at Nike and gaining an insight into creating some of the most talked about running footwear the world has ever seen.
This episode is in collaboration with Vaporfly Worldwide. A big thank you to all of you who answered the call from their Instagram and submitted questions, I put some of them to Fabricio towards the end of the episode.

Warming Yourself from other people's fire - The Big Run - Episode 100 - Danny in Conversation with Tilly GW
Yes that's right, we have reached 100 episodes. I’m not quite sure how but I am sure that every single conversation has been stimulating and so rewarding and I am grateful to all the guests who have given their time, insight and perspective by coming on the show.
A previous guest, the wonderful Tilly, who recently joined me in Victoria park proposed the idea that she would like to interview me. So I thought, as an experiment that maybe for episode 100 you might like a little bit more insight into your host.
Tilly joined me on London's south bank for coffee and pastries. We talk about being more than one thing, the version of yourself you present to the different people your around, dealing with loss, running as a performance and so much more.
I hope you enjoy

Running Towards Nature - Healing, Connecting and Growing a Community with Marlon Patrice and We Go Outside Too.
Running Towards Nature. Hello and welcome back to The Big Run. Last Sunday on a sunny Easter weekend. I had the chance to link with Marlon Patrice and some of the members of We Go Outside Too. Marlon had organised a coach to bring members of the group down to Kew Gardens in London. Following the tragic death of his son in 2020, due to knife crime, and the onset of the COVID pandemic, Marlon was compelled to turn his grief into a power for good. ‘We Go Outside Too’ is his brainchild, an active group making the countryside accessible, with a clear focus on empowering the Black Community to experience the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature. A keen runner, Marlon has been a member of City of Birmingham Striders since 2010, recently turning out for the national road relays as well as taking on the Palestine Marathon. I tagged along to chat with Marlon and some members of the group as they explored Kew. A big thankyou to Marlon Patrice, Tessfa Boyd, Abdul Abz Shahid and Jazzmin Fletcher for their time. Running Towards Change with Jonty Brown - The Big Run - Episode 80
I hope you enjoyed last month's journal episode.
This week we are back with another post-run chat and coffee with all-round Legend Jonty Brown.
Jonty is a barber, Adidas London coach, a drummer, a surfer, and crypto loving, positive force for good.

AND REMEMBER this episode is kindly supported by SOAR running and our performance of the month competition closes on the 11th of April
This spring SOAR are giving you – and a running partner - the chance to win a Marathon System each. That's a pair of their marathon shorts with integrated storage for up to 6 in-race gels, plus an ultralight weight Race Vets 4.0.

It doesn’t need to be race-related either, it can be training progress, a huge personal feat, returning from injury or embracing a new running challenge. We just want to hear why it’s inspired you, and is a worthy winner, in no more than 250 words!
To submit your nominee – and be in with a chance to win – simply email your tale to alex.i@soarrunning.com with ‘Performance Of The Month’ in the subject line.
Nominations must be in by Monday 11th April.
