 Breaking things down

Breaking things down

In today’s episode we talk about the little big things and the concept of breaking things down. Remember to break things down at their natural boundaries. Nature teaches us the need for creating systems that function as a unit to make the whole. Almost everything is made up of smaller sub-units. If you don’t have experience on best practices and approaches, research and adopt a pre-existing approach, with time, you can then make modifications on this approach based on your own unique experience. Indirectness and other counterintuitive approaches to Problem solving

Indirectness and other counterintuitive approaches to Problem solving

Apologies for the brief hiatus. I was ill and needed to rest but I am doing better and stronger now. Thank You for always being here. In today’s episode we explore the concept of INDIRECTNESS and other counterintuitive approaches to problem solving. The Indirect approach is a military strategy described and chronicled by B. H. Liddell Hart after World War I. It was an attempt to find a solution to the problem of high casualty rates in conflict zones. The strategy calls for armies to advance along the line of least resistance. There are a number of lessons we can extrapolate from the concept of indirectness and other strategies mentioned in today’s episode, do listen, share your thoughts and other take-aways with us, we would love to hear from You. Group Think, Use cases and recommendations

Group Think, Use cases and recommendations

For today’s episode we explore Group-think; the excesses and extremes. Knowing when checks need to be done, ways to Course correct for better decision making and problem solving. One way to develop individual thought is exposure, exposure to other thoughts and different modes of thinking. One way to get exposure is travelling, another way to escape group think is reading, reading basically gives you exposure without having to leave your local environment. Any view that is held by multiple members of a group is by default; group-think, group-think is not good or bad. It just is and is effective to a large extent. But at the extremes is where we need to course correct and update certain ideologies to fit the changing nature of society. Maintaining focus in a country like Nigeria

Maintaining focus in a country like Nigeria

In this episode we talk all about how to stay focus and make yourself anti-fragile. As part of the innovations we engage in, we have to figure out the threats we face and where we fit in the regulatory space. We need to learn the right lessons and work to become anti-fragile. We can’t bring about meaningful change by screaming our discontent from the side-lines. No change in a system can occur without help from insiders in the system. We need to be actively involved. Regulatory Decisions will always be made and if we do not work to get representation in spaces where decisions are being made, we will become victims of the decisions made in these regulatory spaces. Giving and receiving Mentorship

Giving and receiving Mentorship

Today we focus on mentorships; the what, when and how. Regardless of the medium you choose to give back with, you must first have something of value to give. No one is under compulsion to be a mentor, there is no commandment anywhere that you must mentor people, but if do mentor others, your motives should not be ulterior. For mentees, the willingness to learn and ability to sit down and do the work is important. Mentorship is not a shortcut or an escape hatch. You have to be a self-starter too. Create structures and systems around your mentor/mentee relationship. There should be agreed date and time. Dealing with Distraction and Directing Focus

Dealing with Distraction and Directing Focus

Today we explore and talk about distraction what it is, how to manage it and ways to direct your focus. The Problem of Distraction did not begin yesterday, the drawing away of the mind from one point or course to another or others. We say something distracts us, when it pulls us away from what we intended to do. Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.” Paulo Coelho. Year-End Routines and plans for the New year

In today’s episode we talk about Year-end routines and plans for the New Year. What did you experience this year? What have you learned from them? From learning from what happened in the year, it is less expensive and most effective to learn from what happened to others. Life is like a school, and its lessons are often dressed up in our circumstances; the challenges, our failures and victories. Rather than live year after year without learning anything or changing anything, decide to live with INTENTIONALITY! PS. The Either-Or Fallacy

The Either-Or Fallacy

In today’s episode we focus on the Either-or Fallacy, also known as false dilemma or false dichotomy. This is a type of logical false belief where a said situation has only a limited number of alternatives. But in reality, it can have more. For context, the thought behind settling for today's episode is coming from a place of frustration at the number of hot takes and opinionated postulations by some industry gate-keepers. The intentions might be good but the resultant effect can be misleading. For example someone speaks from a place of personal experience, without acknowledging the fact that; as rich as their personal experience, it does not cover the full range of possibilities available. In today’s episode we focus on being thorough and the pursuit of excellent! Being thorough is not perfectionism; it is paying attention to details. Game theory for Career advancement

Game theory for Career advancement

Game theory is a mathematical approach to studying decision making that can help explain and address social problems. It tends to focus, most often, on the choice between competition and cooperation. Since games often reflect or share characteristics with real situations -- especially competitive or cooperative situations - they can suggest strategies for dealing with such circumstances. Just as we may be able to understand the strategy of players in a particular game, we may also be able to predict how people, political factions, or states will behave in a given real situation. In today’s episode we explore game theory for self-preservation, career advancement and the common good. Do listen, share with a friend and have an Amazing Week! Second Order thinking for CREATIVES

Second Order thinking for CREATIVES

Failing to consider second- and third-order consequences is the cause of a lot of painfully bad decisions, and it is especially deadly when the first inferior option confirms your own biases. Never seize on the first available option, no matter how good it seems, before you’ve asked questions and explored. - Ray Dalio Today we will be focusing on Second Order thinking for Creatives. First order thinking is the process of considering the intended and perhaps obvious implications of a decision.  Second Order Thinking is a critical practice for making effective policy, business and personal decisions. Our success story is a product of our experiences Learn emotional intelligence, it does a lot for your career and business Have values, ethics play a major role in the decisions we make and who we become It takes an inordinate amount of effort to make an impact in the market place or in career. Do listen, leave comments and have fun.     “Good design is as little design as possible”. Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity. Dieter Rams – German Industrial Designer   Notes from Today’s Episode: We can learn simplicity from nature and everywhere around us You can always start where you are with what you have Work with as little as much clients as possible; the ones who respect you and value your work If you focus on one area and get good at it, it helps you get good at other areas, Everything we do adds up in some way, even things we think are inconsequential Stay close to family, get someone you can talk to, get love, love takes care of the stress Don't dwell on the past, time is forward moving... Always be grateful for everything you get and where you are   Demystifying myths The misconception and wrong notions we hold about creativity, art and under appreciating the value Creatives bring to the table needs to  be dealt with; design is valuable. You need patience and endurance, Always remember that business and design is problem solving. Functionality is part of design, Design serves its purpose when the end user can actually use it. He speaks to us about his journey, experiences and also gave us actionable nuggets on creating a niche for yourself and differentiation techniques, today’s episode is practical. Do listen, leave comments and have fun.   “The first challenge I had was, breaking the stereotype of designers being just being an extension of the hands of clients, nobody pays you well for being an extension of their hands, you are paid for thinking” Notes from Today’s Episode: We can always learn from other Designers, research and model your career after Designers you admire Standing out in today’s Creative Industry can be quite daunting, the first step for anyone starting out is to know yourself, what area of design do you want to specialize in, start out with that area first As a designer what you do is valuable, You are a professional; place a premium on what you do, learn and understand client communication, this skill will stand you out The one thing that has kept me going is that I believe that this is what I am meant to do, you need to be clear about your why, why you do what you do will keep you going Separate emotions from what you do, don’t be emotional attached to your designs that you can’t take criticism or rejections Tell stories with your projects, make your clients’ understand the thought process behind your designs What you have is valuable, put a premium on your skill as a designer   Demystifying myths The Myth that design is easy is wrong, design is not easy. Design takes a lot of careful thinking, technical skills, visual accountability and social skills; all these go into the process of creating good design. No skill or profession is actually easy. Another myth is that good design is cheap, good design and branding isn’t cheap, if you are doing branding and getting it cheap, you need to question it. Don’t expect people to task themselves for nothing, you need to understand that good branding differentiates your product and stands it out, customers and clients place premium on products with good branding.   Remember to go out and create Awesomeness, I am looking forward to hearing from you, send in your comments via email:  thecreativeschronicles@gmail.com, remember to subscribe on iTunes, Google Podcast and any other podcasting app you use, just search for The Creative’s Chronicles Podcast on your podcasting app and subscribe, thank You!   Show Notes: Tola Alabi on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tolaalabidesign/ Tola Alabi on differentiating yourself as a Designer – http://thisisyox.com/the-best-way-to-differentiate-yourself-as-a-graphic-designer/

You must master how you can use design to communicate your ideas to help the client make more money For Mentees - Attitude is everything; there is work to be done, put in the work. Rejections and people saying no drives me and propels me to do more; I question myself   Demystifying myths The Myth that because someone has so many years of experience they don’t go through what you are also going through; for every one design we put out there, there are two, three, four we don’t show that the design process has ruined, and they don’t make the cut, We all go through the same challenges, we get to be undervalued by clients at times and get good jobs  sometimes, At whatever phase you are in presently and you are looking at someone above you; just know we face similar challenges, the difference is the veteran most times gets paid more for their time.   Remember to go out and create Awesomeness, I am looking forward to hearing from you, send in your comments via email:  thecreativeschronicles@gmail.com, remember to subscribe on iTunes and any other podcasting app you use, just search for thecreativeschronicles on your podcasting app and subscribe, thank You! Episode 033 - Starting with the basics and building your way up

Today Guest is Amazing, we have joining us today Tsowa Mainasara Al-min, He is a JavaScript and Go Developer who aims to change the world; one line of code at a time. Today he shares with us how starting with the basics and working our way up can be of tremendous value to our paths as Creatives.   “Your imagination is not limited whenever you are programming a computer, these devices have the power to do a lot and with little effort you can get them to do anything” Notes from Today’s Episode: Stating with and facing seemingly difficult tasks gives us the confidence to proceed and even pick up simpler concept with ease. Learning standards and basics at the beginning is of crucial importance, it will save you a lot of valuable time and effort. If you get stuck, take some time out and come back; try and try again. When you leave the challenge you were working on, use that time to learn something new. Everything we do is connected. What we need more of is community projects, these way we can get more people interested in the tech industry and inspire these people to do more and make them enthusiasts too To stay updated, I usually get myself in the circle of the developers working on the new stuff   Demystifying myths The Myth that a certificate gets you the job is partly true, when you come out with a first class result in computer science, you will get the job, but to keep this job you need to be able to implement a lot of concepts. Most times in school, the students  that practice and implement  concepts they are taught might be average students and the other students that just get the head knowledge without necessarily implementing; will find reality after school rather shocking. Episode 032 - Embracing your own journey and uniqueness

Episode 032 - Embracing your own journey and uniqueness

Today Guest is Amazing, we have joining us today is the Women TechMaker Lead for GDG Minna, Ms. Gbemileke Anthony, she is so many things in one, a techie, developer, writer and poet. Today she shares with us how our paths are uniquely different, in this episode she challenges a lot of myths we hold about our personalities, our stories and life’s tasks   “Do I have to be a single color, why can’t I be a rainbow; if I am rainbow?” Notes from Today’s Episode: Accept all of who you are, don’t minimize your abilities to fit into people’s definitions There is always a learning curve to getting any new skill, you don’t just start and become a pro, remember that this is essentially what life is, give it time and be patient When people share their up and downs and failings you are encouraged and you know that you are not the dumbest and you are spurred on to keep going Remember you were once a newbie, be willing to provide mentorship and be honest about your own journey and give advice from your own experience People will still be people, just be as much of yourself as you can   Demystifying myths The Myth that you need to have a singular definition of yourself is quite limiting. “Do I need to stifle parts of me to be organized, can’t I be all of me… if you are not just one thing, don’t limit yourself” Why is there so much pressure to give a specific very succinct singular definition to oneself? An onion has several layers, but it is still an onion, a sedimentary rock has various strata but it is still a sedimentary rock, this is to say that the sum your parts is greater than the singular entity of you. You can decide to become as much as you desire to be. Episode 031 - Criticism is the building block for career growth

Episode 031 - Criticism is the building block for career growth

Today Guest is Amazing, we have joining us Mr. Omole Samuel, he is a full stack web developer and Freelancer, a coding instructor and an IT Consultant, currently based in Abuja, he started out as an Embedded Systems Programmer and then moved on to become an external coding instructor for various private schools and today he is a Freelance Web Developer. Today he shares with us how we could use criticisms as building blocks for career growth and also how community can be the best thing that can happen to any developer. Notes from Today’s Episode: Programming languages are like spoken languages, the way to get good at it, is to speak it, keep using it till you get fluent in it. Soft skills matter a lot in this technical field, I actually believe that 20% is your skill set and 80% is the soft skills; your presentation, relationship skills etc. Community is the best thing that can happen to a programmer; you literally have a group of persons with different stories and different perspectives; it’s not just about your skill, it’s about the community around you. Criticism is what we need for growth, don’t be defensive, use the criticism and let it becoming building blocks for your growth When you are just starting out, try and block out distractions, this will aid your growth Most times generalizations people have shaped the narratives people hold and our world views. Don’t let such limiting beliefs hold you back, you can handle as much as you can dream up; you can evolve and get better You need to know how to create balance and turn off, this way you can build healthy relationships with friends, family and people in general   Demystifying myths The Myth that you cannot do a lot and be good at it, our brains can actually take as much as we would give it, polyglot programmers and multi-potentialite talented persons is prove to this concept of being able to thrive in more than one field. “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”  You can master more than one skill; you are well able. Episode 030 - Making a Business out of what you do

Today we have an Amazing personality joining us, we have an Online Business Coach, Social Media Legend Mr. Phenomenal Himself, Mr. John Obidi... aka Daddy J. O. a few of his attributes, He is good looking, has an Amazing sense of Humour, Avance Media 2017 Most Influential Young Nigeria in Personal Development and Academia category and He is the Commander in Chief of Smart B. Camp.  Everyone has something, you have a gift, you need to find out how that super power is relevant in today’s economy. He shared with us that it pays to be open minded. Keep moving, trust the process, and believe that one day, your path will trust you enough to stop testing you. There is always something to learn from the winding path, it can be the thing that leads to the thing, that leads to the thing…   Notes from Today’s Episode: Do not be seduced by doctrine that pats you on the back for weakness and mediocrity; by philosophies that encourage you to 'remain as you are'. Being a techie gave me that capability to shape-shift and thrive in various industries These problems have always been around here, but if you want it bad enough there is always a way; I don’t look at the challenges but the solutions… I believe that programmers should be the richest group of people in Nigeria, if only they knew how to monetize solutions… Most programmers get it wrong from the beginning, they start out thinking of selling their time as a service; you should be looking at the market place for a software need and since you have the skills; you then create the solutions for these needs; after doing this you need to learn how to take that product to market; one way to take your product to the market is through Facebook ads… You can monetize through Admob and or licensing To stay updated you can stay subscribed to the most relevant email lists in your field, stay subscribed to YouTube channels and attend Meetups, have Twitter lists about particular categories etc. There are low costs ways of starting out; there is Microsoft Bizspark, you need to learn to bootstrap, you can also launch your app in market places like JVZoo and get subscribers to your solutions, you don’t need money, you just have to be more innovative To get anything you need to be able to express yourself intelligently, step out of your comfort zone and learn these things, learn to speak, get in to places that require you to express yourself Handle the inevitable rejection like it's simply a rite of passage. You have to be willing to look like a fool for a period of time. This is the price that you must pay. Show Notes: Join SmartBCamp - http://facebook.com/groups/smartbcamp    Books Mentioned As a Man Thinketh by James Allen The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Keep regrets away from you, always know that you are still up for great things and new opportunities. Your experiences plays important roles in shaping who you become. Let your experiences rub off on people positively Seek advice from people trained to test your software for vulnerabilities Try as much as possible to ignore suspicious and spam messages, look out for spelling errors in URLs of websites you visit Try to protect your data, be cautious of the kind of data you put on the internet Prioritizing and writing things down, does a lot for you, no matter how busy a schedule you have Outsourcing also does a lot for you   “It is better to be cautious than careless…”, The safest system is a system that is not on, as long as any communication gadget is on, it is vulnerable”   Demystifying the Myths The myth that women cannot be programmers or there are some fields that ladies can’t thrive in, this is false, I urge every female tech enthusiast to go for it, women can be really dedicated to tasks and they can factor in a lot of things in whatever the do, you can be anything you want to be as long as you are committed and dedicated.   I am looking forward to hearing from you, send in your comments via email:  thecreativeschronicles@gmail.com, remember to subscribe on iTunes  and any other podcasting app you use, just search for thecreativeschronicles on your podcasting app and subscribe, thank You!   This has been an amazing and enlightening episode, I trust that you have picked a ton of value from today’s episode, do have an Amazing Weekend, I will see you next Week.

If you wait till you are perfect; you might wait forever.   My Take Away’s From Today’s Episode: Our environment plays an important and vital role in pushing us and influencing our choices and decisions Our time is finite, there is so much to do; you need to understand that you cannot learn everything and you cannot do everything; there is only so much you can do at a time. You need to learn how to manage time effectively. You need to be clear about what you really want You plateau without mentorship, you need to have people that push and force you to level up and do more We need to stop at various points in our journey and take stock of what you have learnt so far and find ways to use these knowledge Put yourself out there; create stuff and put it out, let people see it; use it and give you feedback
