DTD#124: Your Intrinsic Curiosity Longs To Guide You—Let It. With New Zealand Based Artist, Élisabeth Denis

Vinny sits down with his friend Eli, an artist and creative soul who has allowed her curiosity to guide her life in fascinating directions. Originally from Montreal, Canada, there was a point in Eli's life when the mask of old had to come off to make way for something more genuine, more real.

After this realization, Eli traveled the globe garnering experiences while honing in on who she really is and what lights her up inside. Like every journey, there were hardships, peaks and valleys; that's what makes it a human endeavor. Both while traveling and at home, Eli has studied cultures, art styles, places, and herself above all else. After years of travel, she found herself in New Zealand, which she's called home for the past five and a half years.

What emanates from Eli's soul is a calling to create.

Not only for herself, although her creative expression is varied and inherent; but, driven by personal experience and curiosity, Eli has felt impelled to tell the stories of others. This has recently comprised minority groups in both Zealand and here in Japan, a country that has enamored her for years. Eli imparts these important human stories primarily by creating documentaries. She's currently here in Japan exploring her interests while working on a new project.

This ambition to understand, to share, to make—has guided her on a path that is truly beautiful.

On this episode we discuss:

- The realization which caused Eli to shift from a materialistic facade to a more genuine understanding of who she is.

- The years Eli spent traveling the world, garnering experiences and understanding.

- Why action is the only way to beat your self doubt.

- The individual mark of an artist

- Minorities in Japan

- Passion, and flowing with where it takes you.

- Rediscovering things you loved to do.

- The personal experience which sparked Eli's interest in minority groups in New Zealand and Japan.

DTD #123: Brothers In Life's Adventure - Funniest Stories & Greatest Revelations From Greg's Visit to Japan

DTD #123: Brothers In Life's Adventure - Funniest Stories & Greatest Revelations From Greg's Visit to Japan

Over the past two weeks, Greg and I (Vinny) made soul-enriching memories in my home city, Osaka, Japan as well as sunny Fukuoka and a rain-drenched Nagasaki. Along the way, we often brainstormed on our biggest, most outrageous ambitions. One anchor of our trip was the following quote on the Rich Roll Podcast by legendary editor and founder of Wired Magazine, Kevin Kelly:

“Do something in your twenties that looks nothing like success. That experience, as unsuccessful as it might look then, might become the touchstone for your success later on.”

Greg’s back home to continue on his path. I’m in Japan traversing mine. We’re on opposite sides of the planet, bound by this striving for something that we believe is richer than traditional success. What we strive for more than anything is a life without regret, a story worth telling. This is the time of our lives to throw caution in the wind and go for it.

We leave it all on the field in this sentimental, inspiring, passionate episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast, where we discuss the funniest stories and biggest revelations from a truly life-changing trip which opened up our hearts and brought us even closer as brothers, if that was at all possible.

We are so unbelievably grateful to be alive, experiencing this beautiful world with all of you.

DTD #122: Why You Are Stuck in Your Comfort Zone (And How to Get Out) with Stacey Lauren

DTD #122: Why You Are Stuck in Your Comfort Zone (And How to Get Out) with Stacey Lauren

I (Gregory) was a guest on my friend Stacey's podcast recently and we talked about the comfort zone. She asked me about how people can get out of their comfort zone more, and I was struck by a big thought. I realized that most people (including myself) try to take the intellectual approach. We read books like The Comfort Crisis and Daring Greatly to inspire us. We listen to David Goggins and Cameron Hanes to motivate us. But these are all feeding the more advanced, cognitive parts of our brain. And it's this rational, logical side that is keeping us stuck in the first place.

It tells us that we might fail, struggle, or get laughed at if we step outside our comfort zone. These are all real possibilities and they often do end up happening. So what should you do instead? Turn off most of your brain. Successfully getting out of your comfort zone is not rocket science, brain surgery, or advanced mathematics. All you need is basic motor functioning. And the best part? YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT RIGHT!!

All you have to do is drag your body into a space, place, or activity that scares you. Once there, you can flounder, stutter, stumble, or make a complete fool of yourself. It doesn't actually matter what happens next because you have already succeeded. Let go of all attachments to the outcome so that even if you fail miserably, you are still winning. Said differently, the best way to get out of your comfort zone is simply to stop thinking. Use that small but mighty lizard brain that your great reptilian ancestors gave you and go do something scary. You will learn more in 60 seconds of bombing an open mic than a lifetime of thinking about how to become a stand-up comedian.

Get out there and live a story worth telling.

DTD #119: It Takes Courage To Be Happy

DTD #119: It Takes Courage To Be Happy

Over the past year, I (Vinny) have been asked in different ways if I’m always happy. This has made me ask myself, why? This question of whether I’m always happy has made me wonder if it seems as if I’m putting on a front; if people think that who they see isn’t the real me.

Well, I can tell you I hurt; I feel just as deeply as anybody. That doesn’t mean the man you see with the unwavering smile is some fraud.

That person is one of faith. The smile isn’t fake — yet it’s for you, and it’s for me too — to remind me how good this life can be, that nothing’s so important, so dark, so painful, as to take away my faith. I have an unwavering faith in the beauty of life.

It takes courage to have faith.

It takes courage, knowing well that life is damn well difficult, to be joyful despite that. I have an undying faith, because even though things may be tough right now, there is always a light ahead if we just keep moving.

It’s so much easier to give up.

To say it’s all for nothing and succumb.

I’m a human being, and I hurt as much as anybody. This doesn't mean we can't feel low. Of course we can, and should allow ourselves to feel those negative emotions, too. But we decide how we'll face life, each and every day.

At times I want to give up. But I can’t. Neither can you.

Be courageous. Have faith.

So no, I’m not happy all the time. Still, I choose to face life with a smile.

DTD #118: How to Live an Artistic Life Regardless of Your Profession

DTD #118: How to Live an Artistic Life Regardless of Your Profession

You don't need to paint or write in order to live an artistic life. Creativity isn't just about creating tangible things in the world for others to see.

Rather, living artistically comes down to how you engage with each moment of every day. It's in the texture of your actions, the way you treat people, and how you respond to challenges. Regardless of your profession, Vinny and Gregory are here to tell you that you can live an artistic life!

In this episode, expect to learn:

How to live an artistic life without creating art What it feels like to complete the first draft of your second book while sitting on a train Why creativity is not just about creating something famous or successful, but rather the act of bringing an idea to life Why you must pursue your passion without attaching pressure to the outcome Why living a story worth telling is an inside job How to persevere through the hard moments on your journey to success\ And much more

Ultimately, success is not solely measured in monetary terms. It's measured in the joy and meaning that comes from doing what you love. So if you're feeling stuck or hesitant about pursuing your passions, this episode will inspire you to Dare to Dream and chase after what truly matters to you.

DTD #117: Bring More Joy and Fun Into Your Life By Understanding Martyr vs. Trickster Energy

DTD #117: Bring More Joy and Fun Into Your Life By Understanding Martyr vs. Trickster Energy

After a nine-day surf trip in Panama, Gregory reflects on a few powerful realizations that stemmed from having ample time for leisure, afternoon naps, and reading. The biggest epiphany came from Elizabeth Gilbert's book Big Magic and has to do with the distinction she makes between martyr and trickster energy. Martyr energy is heavy, solemn, sacrificial, and rigid. Trickster energy is light, sly, playful, and flexible.

Gregory realized that he had been creating martyr energy regarding drinking alcohol for years. He had been putting immense pressure on himself to never drink again because he had convinced himself he needed to be a role model for others. He thought his decision to stop drinking would be a beacon of light for other people who were sick of feeling like they had to drink to fit in. Instead, he's realizing that no one really cares.

Join Gregory as he unpacks his learning and realizes that evangelizing the health benefits of not drinking (or anything else for that matter) doesn't actually get anyone to change. People change when they see you possessing something they want (health, joy, fun) and they will come to you to get it.

Tune in to learn how to bring less martyr energy and more trickster energy into your life!

DTD #116: What Japan's Cherry Blossoms (桜, Sakura) Teach Us About the Fleeting Beauty of Life

DTD #116: What Japan's Cherry Blossoms (桜, Sakura) Teach Us About the Fleeting Beauty of Life

This is my (Vinny) first spring living in Japan. What I love about this country is how each season is utterly unique. The autumn leaves (紅葉, kōyō) paint the hills in fiery red color, yellow and orange tints. The spring is delicate, renowned for its soft pink cherry blossom trees (桜, sakura).

While the fall foliage lasts for a couple of months, the cherry blossoms flower and remain for about a week. The anticipation builds until they bloom and cast the Japanese landscape in a light pink complexion; then, they fall and blow away.

The way they fall, land, and continue flowing forward through their lifespan is integral to their mystique, representing the cycle of birth and death in our own lives. The meaning derived from the ephemeral nature of sakura runs deep in Japanese history and myth.

Looking back, life is rather short. It’s fraught with painful moments, leaps of faith, regrets; it’s also imbued with moments of joy, laughter, friendship and love.

The river of time never stops. In both the pain and the joy, there is a profound beauty if we stop, just for a moment, and appreciate it.

We won’t be around forever; the blooming sakura present a beautiful chance to appreciate this.

On this episode, I also discuss the power of memories and senses, sharing a story of how my most potent memories relate to the blooming Sakura in Japan.

DTD #113: Leap Before You Look - Why a Meaningful Life Requires Courage

It's easy to get attached to outcomes.

We hope life will unfold in a neat and orderly way. When it takes a hard left turn, however, we cling to the idea that we were supposed to go right.

Our attachment to the result stops us from enjoying an alternative scenic and eye-opening route.

What would happen if we doubled down our commitment while embracing the unknown? If we stopped assuming that we know what our path is supposed to look like?

That's what this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast is all about—releasing our attachment to the outcome with the bravery and audacity to leap before you look. To know that everything will be okay - better than you can possibly imagine -  if you courageously traverse into uncharted terrain.

Expect to learn:

Why letting go of the outcome is so essential How to find your competitive advantage Why Vinny gets so much hate mail Why nothing really matters (in a good way) The paradox of life The difference between being creepy and caring

And much more.

DTD #111: Stay Light, Delve Deep - Our Philosophy For Dancing Through Life's Challenges

DTD #111: Stay Light, Delve Deep - Our Philosophy For Dancing Through Life's Challenges

There’s a life philosophy that sums up so much of what we’ve learned and hope to share here on The Dare to Dream Podcast: stay light, delve deep.

When it comes to life, we can't control most of it. We’re all going to struggle in some capacity. By no means is life a walk through the park, and we believe that to get the absolute most from this experience, we have to give everything we've got to dive deep below the surface to explore the treasure hidden in each day.

That means asking the big questions and actively pursuing them.

That means feeling the emotions you’re experiencing to the fullest—the pain, the joy, the love—all of it. It means giving everything you have to find the reason you’re on this planet and not settling. Ever.

And while we travel deep, perhaps what’s more important, is staying light.

Don’t let the existential questions weigh you down, for nothing should take away the simple joy of just being alive.

Ask the questions, and dance in the mystery. Laugh through it all with the people who matter to you. Appreciate each moment while dreaming about the future. Finding the proper balance of levity and languishing is difficult, but nobody said it was meant to be easy.

On this episode we discuss:

The insight which inspired this concept How to appreciate the simple beauty of the moment  Flow state and an acceptance of what is Optimism in the face of adversity  Why we're hopeful in this new age we're in

And much more.

DTD #110: Don't Let Fear Hold You Back - How to Expand Your Comfort Zone

Fear and self-doubt are some of the most insidious forces we are up against. They are what keep us playing small, afraid to take action on our biggest dreams. We are often our own worst enemies as we let our inner critic tell us that we don't have what it takes to live an extraordinary life.

But what if there was a way to quiet our inner critic? To take action despite being scared about how things will go?

This special episode is an interview that Gregory did on his friend Stacey Lauren's podcast called Do The Thing. In it, Gregory reveals the simple strategy he has used to help dozens of his coaching clients overcome their self-doubt.

1. Do it scared

2. Do it unprepared

3. Do it again

This episode will FIRE YOU UP and teach you how to take action TODAY despite being afraid.

DTD #109: Why We're Obsessed With Seeking Meaningful Life Experiences

DTD #109: Why We're Obsessed With Seeking Meaningful Life Experiences

Realizing our potential is a daunting endeavor.

There's no crystal ball which will tell us who we'll become if we do A, B and C. Yet that's what makes it the greatest adventure we can have. Without a clearly defined roadmap, all we really have is how we feel. Does it feel like we're improving? Does it feel like life is progressing in a way that's fulfilling and aligns with who we believe we truly are inside?

Often, it's difficult to know. That's life. It's mysterious and shrouded in a fog. But that's what imbues it with endless possibility and wonder.

On this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast, Vincent and Gregory discuss Greg's rebranding as a human potential coach. It's his life's mission to help people realize their potential through having extraordinary life experiences as he pursues the same himself.

The guys also discuss why potential isn't just about sticking to a routine, hitting the check marks and steadily improving. We're not robots. We're meant to have life-changing experiences which broaden our horizons of the world and of ourselves. That's how we truly blossom.

Lastly, Vincent and Gregory discuss the absurdity of money; it's a crazy concept, isn't it? As two guys doing everything they can to get the most out of life, they grapple with the idea of making money and how the pursuit of this ancient technology controls so many of our lives. Is that all we're here to do?

DTD #108: Unlocking Synchronicity - The Power of Choosing Love Over Fear

DTD #108: Unlocking Synchronicity - The Power of Choosing Love Over Fear

After an incredible month of traveling throughout Japan, I, (Vinny) am back home in Osaka with a resurgence of inspiration to share with y'all. Greg and I are back for an epic episode and an impactful start to 2023.

This past month, I had experiences which can only be described as fate.

These experiences derived from boldness and, without a doubt, burned brightly in love.

The decision’s never perfectly clear. But I believe throughout our lives, in the big acts and the small, we choose love, or fear.

Fear will try to scare us. It’ll tell us to be quiet when we long to speak, to stay where we are when we dream of moving, to continue as things are.

Trust me, I don’t always follow my heart, take the bold chance or know exactly what I’m doing.

I have those moments of regret where I wish I acted just as much as anybody. But more often than not, in the moments when it’s counted, I’ve chosen love.

Love takes risks.

Choosing love — love for ourselves, which shines through in trusting our intuition; love for others, which is possible in every interaction and experience, regardless of if it’s reciprocated; and love for life, which means nothing more than appreciating the gift of every day — will clear the fog from our eyes, no matter how lost we may feel.

Choosing love in this life, we’ll get to where we’re meant to go, as things will happen we can't possibly understand or plan for.

Just keep going with your heart wide open.

Hi DTD Fam!

Gregory here.

Every New Years' Eve, I sit down to read all my journal entries from the past year. I started this tradition in 2019 and have enjoyed looking back at how each year went. There's something special about reading about the highs and lows knowing how it all turned out. It makes me feel like the omniscient narrator of my life.

I have decided to share this tradition with all of you, so here are 18 of the biggest takeaways from Daring to Dream in 2022.

Enjoy!

DTD#103: Small Continuous Steps Will Take You Where You're Meant to Go

What do we do when there’s a dream that seems too big, too out there, too daunting?
We simplify.
We prioritize.
We take small, continuous steps in the direction which we’re called — not great, occasional leaps.
“Accomplish the great task by a series of small acts,” encourages the Tao te Ching, the text of the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism.
If we don’t start, however small, we’ll look back one day and ask the most universal question of all: what if?
The muses—those mythical beings of light which inspire our creative pursuits — don’t care about the perfectly crafted sentence, the views, the pay raise or the title. These things are the byproduct, not the goal. They don't care about what we call failure.
The muses smile upon is the willingness to face our fear, our uncertainty, our dream. It’s not the result which matters, but that you courageously follow what you’re meant to do.
Start small.
Begin.
This is the story of how I (Vinny) am prioritizing writing my second book while on the move in Japan.
If you're feeling the resistance, that's a good thing. This episode will shed some light on why you must get 'er done.

DTD #98: Becoming a Better Friend to Yourself

DTD #98: Becoming a Better Friend to Yourself

When a close friend comes to you with a problem, how do you treat them? Do you tell them all the things they’re doing wrong? Or support them by offering encouragement to get through whatever issue they’re facing? Imagine how much better our lives would be if we were as nice to ourselves as we are to our friends.

Everyone has an inner critic, but sometimes the voice of our inner critic is so strong that it has a negative impact on our health and progression in life. Combined with the pressure that we put on ourselves to achieve, it’s easy to suffer from a lack of creativity and ability to simply enjoy the moment.

After a series of solo episodes, Vincent and Gregory are back together for this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast! They’re talking about both of their journeys to becoming a better friend to themselves and the resources that are helping them to do so.

To hear how they’re combating their own negativity and the pressures of life to find inner peace, tune in!

Topics discussed in this episode:

Why you need to be a better friend to yourself The pressure we put on ourselves to achieve Learning to quiet the inner critic and shift perspective What’s been inspiring Gregory and Vincent lately Being disciplined and also engaging in self-care Vincent’s recent experience of being overwhelmed How Gregory and Vincent aspire to be The importance of focusing on human connection versus goals Vincent shares stories of his experiences working in Japan

DTD #95: Our Vulnerabilities Make Us Strong

DTD #95: Our Vulnerabilities Make Us Strong

In this episode, I—Vincent—discuss some of the challenges I've been facing in Japan, and why our vulnerabilities actually make us stronger. Human. A part of something greater.

I draw wisdom from Ryan Holiday's new book Discipline Is Destiny, and discuss what strength meant for people like Queen Elizabeth II.

What does it mean to be strong? Does it mean taking on as much as we can bear? Or is it asking for help? Surrender? After two months of living in Japan, my life has changed quite a lot. Yet I'm still me, wondering, seeking, looking for the signs which tell me to continue with my best foot forward. I'm finding them.

Hopefully, this episode can be seen as a sign for you, too.

DTD #94: When You Can’t Find the Solution, Be the Solution - How Katie Fletcher Followed Her Dreams and Founded Local Scoop, the Package-Free, Low-Waste Grocery Store

After a trail of disappointing jobs, Katie Fletcher made the bold decision to go after her own dreams and stop looking for fulfillment in corporate America. Her dedication to fitness and history as a triathlon athlete strengthened her entrepreneurial spirit, and now, in just a few weeks, she will be opening a low-waste, package-free grocery store called Local Scoop in Encinitas, CA.

On today’s episode, Katie shares her journey starting Local Scoop, why she only goes on social media for her business, and how her resolution to make the world a better place was a significant catalyst for change.

She discovered her passion for food and nutrition at a young age, leading her to study public health and nutrition at Yale University. During two trips studying abroad, Katie fell in love with low-waste grocery shops but couldn’t find any similar stores at home. She wondered, why didn’t her own country value a sustainable and affordable grocery store system?

More people than ever are focused on healthy eating, but an influx of health food products and misleading information makes it difficult to know what exactly you’re consuming, where it comes from, and how beneficial it really is for you. Being so focused on nutrition can also take the fun out of eating, and that’s one reason Katie wants her store to bring clean, healthy, and delicious food to her community.

Tune in for a conversation on health, good food, and why staying off your phone can change your life!

Topics discussed in this episode:

Why Katie doesn’t like using social media in her personal life The purpose of Local Scoop and how it works Products that will be available at Local Scoop How Katie came up with the idea for Local Scoop Obstacles making Local Scoop a reality Entrepreneur and endurance sports Katie’s daily routine Gregory and Katie discuss reading and book clubs Katie’s education and career in nutrition and health The climate crisis as a motivating factor Advice to people stuck in an unfulfilling job Katie gives her definition of success Tools for finding the next step in your life Technology, especially cell phones, as a distraction Gregory gives his definition of success The Sunday Scaries

DTD #88: Moving to Japan and Running an Ultra-Marathon, How Monumental Life Events Have Shifted Our Perspectives

We've had some pretty extreme perspective shifts recently. Vinny moved halfway across the world to Osaka, Japan, where he will be teaching English for the next year, maybe more! Gregory, in an attempt to run (pun intended) from his feeling of sadness that Vinny moved away, decided to do an unsupported 50-mile ultramarathon, which means he just ran 50 miles out of sheer audacity.

Tune in to hear about Vinny's adventure in Japan and Gregory's grueling journey into the pain cave. In classic Dare to Dream fashion, we've woven some life lessons and meaningful takeaways into our stories. The episode ends with some discussion on the power of perspective shifts, and how they may help us face and overcome whatever challenges come our way.

DTD #82: Embracing the Shadowed Soul with Melissa Jennewein

DTD #82: Embracing the Shadowed Soul with Melissa Jennewein

“I wanted to live,” writes Melissa Jennewein in her book Shadowed Soul: Wandering to Find Your Inner Compass. “Not just live, but understand what living meant… Something has to happen, or I’ll never know my soul.”

Shadowed Soul tells the tale of Melissa's eight years traveling the world after two devastating, simultaneous life events.

With little planning and massive trust, Melissa quit her job, packed a backpack, and leapt into the unknown to better understand her past, her inner world, and the planet we share.

She shines as an example of what is possible when we face our fears and confront our shadows with openness and faith.

In this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast, Vincent and Melissa discuss what the shadowed soul is, and how we may confront it in ourselves, even without the ability to travel the world.

Yet, there’s something that happens when we travel—we’re continually confronted by the unknown, causing us to face our own vulnerabilities and preconceived notions. Melissa’s story will inspire you to find a way to get out there.

Along her journey, Melissa met empowered young women and men who are tired of the ancient practices forced upon them—these young people simply want to break free, live their own lives and chart their own paths.

Vincent and Melissa touch on this new consciousness that’s dawning and how it’s playing out across the globe. Underneath it all, the young, the old, the modern and the ancient, is a longing for love.

The world is changing. Through love, we can too. We hope this conversation will help you see, question, and inspire that change the world so badly needs.

DTD #79: Finding Peace, Play, and Healing with Wolf Castillo

Life has a funny way of connecting you with the people you are supposed to meet. And it's often in the least grandiose of circumstances that the seeds of your future are planted.

Wolf and I met in 2020 when Aubrey Marcus offered his online personal development program Go For You Win for a single dollar. When your favorite podcaster/Renaissance Man offers you something for $1, you say yes. And that's what me, Wolf, and thousands of people all around the world did.

Our friendship began during quarantine and we have been encouraging, supporting, and inspiring each other ever since. Wolf is one of the most articulate human beings I've ever met, and he has a way with words that would make Billy Shakespeare insecure. He's a coach, a podcaster, a healer, and someone who describes himself as "holding space for others to find their holistic expression."

This was one of the most healing conversations I've ever had as we explored the importance of play, loosening up, and finding inner peace.

We also dove deep into:

- The importance of balancing relentless commitment with relentless compassion

- How taking yourself too seriously causes you to lose your softness and live solely in the head instead of the heart

- How the exhale is just important as the inhale: without the exhale and play we are no longer human beings but human doings

- Healing is how we remember our wholeness and the essence of who we are

You will walk away from this episode feeling lighter, lovelier, and with a sense that everything is going to be okay. Because it is!

DTD #73: Epiphany at the Opera, with Electropop Artist Barrett Crake

DTD #73: Epiphany at the Opera, with Electropop Artist Barrett Crake

American electropop artist Barrett Crake was living the life that many American college grads dream of. He'd landed an impressive gig after graduating from a prestigious university. Life was exciting—he was going somewhere. Yet he felt anxious. He felt trapped. He was working behind a desk, wondering if this was truly the path for him.

He decided to take a trip where an unforeseen moment would change everything.

After sitting through a three-hour opera in Berlin, Barrett had an epiphany. He was meant to be an entertainer.

Since then, he's pursued the callings of his heart, those which he felt as a young kid but perhaps didn’t understand until it was time to take a drastic step as an adult.

When the revelation struck, Barrett quit his job and began putting in the work with acting and then music to become the artist that he is today. There of course are hardships to overcome in any worthwhile journey. But now, years later, Barrett creates music for a vibrant fanbase and has established meaningful, global partnerships with producers such as Nick Ribbens and Mauve.

Barrett currently splits his time between Lisbon, Portugal and the United States, emblematic of the creative spirit who takes steps every day not only to progress as an artist, but as a human being. Barrett strives to live a life that’s authentic to who he is, and that goes far beyond just making music.

This episode will light a fire in your soul to take a step, even if you’re unsure of where it’ll lead. You’ll know if it’s taking you where you’re meant to go, and if it’s not, at least now you’re on the journey, no longer waiting, but living.

DTD #69: Transcending Where We Come From with the Brazilian World-Traveler, Bruno Schroeder

Bruno is a guy who spreads joy in this world.

For the first guest appearance of The Dare to Dream Podcast overseas, Vincent had the privilege of hanging with his mate and hostel co-worker while staying in Lisbon, Portugal, Bruno Schroeder.

Vincent and Bruno discussed being raised in Brazil and Brazilian culture, Bruno's epic adventures backpacking through South America, how his career in hospitality and language has brought him to Portugal and will take him next to Germany, amongst other hot topics.

Bruno is a seeker and a student of life who puts a smile on the face of everyone he meets. It’s the Brazilian way.

Bruno has a sincere curiosity about people and this world, something Vincent noticed immediately when they met. He wants to know about where you come from, what you miss about home, what you love about your country. He's a man doing wonderful things in this world because he's on a quest to better understand it.

This is an episode that will open up your heart to the beauty of our differences. Plus, his laugh is guaranteed to put a big smile on your face :)

DTD #68: Must We Live the Life That's Expected of Us?

Warning: this episode may feel like a bit of an existential life crisis. In it, we explore a few of life's questions that we are currently grappling with, set against the backdrop of a lively Lisbon street fair.

Is going back to school to get a Master's Degree the right decision?  If more education is the right decision, is it the right time?  Is it wrong to write and explore beliefs and opinions that we may not fully embody yet?

We discuss expectations, realizations, and everything in-between as we strive to live a life that is most authentically our own.

No one said that Daring to Dream would be easy, and in this vulnerable episode, we delve into some of the beauty and the difficulties that we are currently facing.

DTD #67: Living in a Hostel, How to Use Social Media While Traveling, and Why You Need to Live an Interesting Life

Have you ever had so much fun at a hostel while traveling that you asked yourself, "I wonder what it would be like to LIVE here?" No? Well we'll tell you how it is anyway.

This episode details Vinny's first week of living at the Lookout Lisbon hostel in Lisbon, Portugal. He shares what it's like to live in a 12-person mixed dorm, catching his nightly beauty rest from the top bunk on a triple decker bunk bed, amongst other sit-com worthy antidotes.

We also discuss one of our favorite topics to pontificate on, social media.

The good news is that we solved social media. We determined the best way to use it and you'll never have to feel stressed out about too much screen time again. The bad news is that I'm lying. You will still get to grapple with your own impossible complex relationship with social media.

This episode is sprinkled with wisdom from author Ryan Holiday, who says "living an interesting life makes your writing better" and that you should "write about what you can't NOT write about."

We believe that living an interesting life and talking about what makes you come alive is the recipe for an epic life.

Come on in for another episode with two best friends who are adjusting to living 5,679 miles away from each other.

This episode will put a smile on your face, guaranteed :)

DTD #66: Vinny's Launch to Lisbon - DTD Goes International

Today was a special moment in Dare to Dream history. This episode was recorded as Vinny was sitting in Montreal, waiting to board his flight to Lisbon, Portugal, where he will be living in a hostel for the next three months. Vinny plans to wander around Europe for an undetermined amount of time as he waits for Japan to open its borders. If you live in Europe, you are not safe. There is now a wild Vincent on the loose, and if you see him, try not to panic. He can be subdued with classical medieval literature or the promise of a nice long walk.

Not only has The Dare to Dream Podcast officially gone international, but it has also now become Vinny & Greg's main medium of communication as they courageously step into their long-distance relationship together. Get ready for a whole new chapter of playful banter, entertaining travel stories, and the life lessons these two dreamers learn on their epic journies.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far, today marks the beginning of a new chapter and we are just getting started!

DTD #65: Living a Life Without Regret, w/ Columbia-Based Writer Sara Burdick

Columbia-based writer Sara Burdick is a curious soul, a world traveler, a seeker of truth and meaning — a dreamer. What’s unique about Sara is that her dreams didn't remain dreams. She acted. She took a chance. She sold her things, left her job, and leaped into the unknown and is now experiencing the beautiful opportunities that have come from taking a chance on herself.

Vinny asked Sara if she would join him to discuss her journey on episode #65 of The Dare to Dream Podcast.

She’s been through what Vinny is currently experiencing: a calling of the soul to get out into the world and question what truly matters in life.

Her story serves as living proof of what is possible when we ask ourselves what really matters, and don’t stop until we experience the answer.

She delivered a wealth of knowledge, passion, and inspiration, not as a teacher would to a student, but as a friend would to another whom they truly care for and want to see flourish.

DTD #61: Living a BIG Life with Author, Leader and Perennial Seeker Rick Broniec

Over the past 70 years, Rick Broniec has continuously broken the mold of what is expected of him as a man, a Midwesterner, and a chemistry teacher.

At the age of 38, after having built a successful and acclaimed life as an educator, Rick had a great awakening. His life looked ideal from the outside but on the inside, he was living a lie. This realization triggered an epic journey to take off his mask and heal the father wound of his childhood.

The coolest part about Rick is that you can’t put him in a box. From being a lifelong practitioner of Kriya Yoga to dedicating decades of his life to Men’s work, Rick embodies healthy masculinity. He is a perennial seeker and is continuously breaking down his old ego and identity to learn more about what it means to live authentically.

Join us for this incredible episode where Rick courageously shares both the highs and the lows of his journey, and how he’s striving to live a big life. Rick is one of the most compassionate, authentic humans we have ever met, and his gaze alone will light up your soul from the inside out.

DTD #57: Dare to Live a Life That’s Truly Yours with Paris-Based Creative Shabnam Ferdowsi

“Have you ever felt paralyzed with ambition before?” Writes Paris-based creative Shabnam Ferdowsi in her article on Medium.com.

“A dream so daunting and out of the ordinary, you couldn’t even muster the courage to talk to your closest friends about it? So instead, you wandered aimlessly towards whatever else other people were pointing to pretending your dream wasn’t there?”

No further reading necessary. Knowing nothing else about Shab, it was already clear that we belong in the same tribe. We’ve received so much wisdom from our guests who have traversed through the unknown and have made it out the other side with their spirit intact. We are grateful to be the wide-eyed recipients of their teachings.

But it’s absolutely invigorating to speak to dreamers like us who are in the thick of it, navigating uncharted terrain and seeking what lights their soul on fire.

Shab is one of these people—a writer, photographer, and all around creative doer who is no longer living somebody else’s dream. She writes: “No more floating. I want to surf.”

This conversation felt like talking to an old friend about what truly matters in life. We hope it inspires you as much as it did us.

DTD #53: Outlasting Adversity and Prioritizing Happiness with Actor & Writer Duke Van Patten

Hanging out with Duke Van Patten is like drinking a cup of strong black coffee on a sunny day with Robert De Niro or Hugh Grant or perhaps Jimmy Fallon—bottom line—it’s energizing and damn entertaining. Vincent’s older brother Duke is an actor, writer, and entrepreneur who has had his fair share of knocks, but none could diminish his unique and optimistic perspective on life.

When Duke graduated from SMU with his sights set on becoming an actor, he felt it was only right to learn from the very best. This led him to hop across the Atlantic to pursue a master’s from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. At Bristol Old Vic, Duke would join the ranks of notable alumni such as Daniel Day-Lewis and Olivia Colman as he donned a pair of tights and honed his theater voice. PROJECT!

However, what Duke experienced at Bristol wasn’t what he expected. His experience was often dark, and it was at this low point where he had to dig deep and ask himself what truly matters in life, and who he wants to be. Duke’s story of finding himself in a drastically unfamiliar environment is inspiring to anybody trying to find the light in themselves when the world goes dim. But this podcast is anything but dark and depressing.

Duke’s passion for life, his hilarious impersonations and stories, and his positive outlook for the future will leave you encouraged and in stitches. He’s a one of a kind, you don’t want to miss this one.

DTD #52: Seek Your Dream Life, Not a Dream Job

DTD #52: Seek Your Dream Life, Not a Dream Job

Spoiler alert: It should be illegal for two people to have this much fun together. If you’re not prepared to witness what happens when two best friends get together after not seeing each other for two weeks, this episode is not for you.

This episode is fueled by bone broth and is anchored around the book The Third Door by Alex Banayan. In his book, Alex shares his epic adventure to interview some of the most successful people in the world.

From hacking The Price Is Right to interviewing Bill Gates to shadowing the legendary Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, Alex plays above his means because he has the courage to ask. He consistently asks for what he wants, faces his fears, and Dares to Dream!

His story is incredibly inspiring, not because he is some wonder-kid with an IQ of 180, but because he seems like a normal dude who is wholeheartedly chasing something that matters to him. His story aligns perfectly with the spirit of The Dare to Dream Podcast—his journey fired us up.

Join us as we dive into:

—Why you should seek what truly EXCITES you

—Why you should go all-in on what makes YOU unique

—Why you should fit your job into your life, not your life into a job

—The power of saying yes to things that scare you, even if you have no idea (at the time) how to figure it out

—Why the best conversations often happen in the Uber/taxi

—What success means to us at this moment

And much more!

If you’re looking for some laughs, some inspiration, and genuine human connection, look no further.

Come on in, the bone broth is nice n’ hot!

DTD #48: The Stoicism Starter Pack — Leverage This Ancient Philosophy to Combat Anxiety and the Fear of Being Judged

DTD #48: The Stoicism Starter Pack — Leverage This Ancient Philosophy to Combat Anxiety and the Fear of Being Judged

Stoicism is an ancient philosophy with modern benefits, associated with figures such as one of the last "good" Roman Emperors, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca, a Roman contemporary of Jesus. The beautiful thing about the philosophy is how its practices can help us lead simpler, happier lives, more attuned with the natural flow of life and our inner compass.

Due to the common English definition of “stoic,” you may be envisioning George Washington and his shiny wooden teeth, braving the bitter cold as he crosses the Delaware. While that’s quite an enthralling mental picture, stoicism is actually quite applicable to modern, everyday life. Centered around the virtues of courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom, the stoics engaged in practical and sometimes humorous tactics to fully engage with life.

In this episode we have a little too much fun discussing:

— Our favorite stoic practices, including Memento Mori and Amor Fati

— The key stoic distinction of separating what you can control from what you can’t control

— Why we should practice giving speeches with stones in our mouths

— Why sane people can’t write poetry

— Our favorite quotes and passages from the stoic OG big dogs

Join us for an ancient pow wow that’ll make you rethink how incredible life is. Toga not included.

DTD #46: Practical Philosophy, the Hero's Journey & Modern Courage, with Dane Sanders

DTD #46: Practical Philosophy, the Hero's Journey & Modern Courage, with Dane Sanders

Star Wars. Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter. The Lion King.

In the classic hero’s journey, the hero leaves the familiar and sets out into the unknown. They face adversity and fall to their knees. Yet, they overcome, and return home to share with the world what they learned.

Each of us is on our hero’s journey. However, it’s never as clean and clear-cut as it is in the movies. The journey is messy, painful, and downright terrifying. Sometimes we act the hero; often we act the coward. On our journey, there will be fear, resistance, and we will come face to face with our deepest insecurities. But when we hear the call, the only thing that truly matters is whether or not we heed it.

On this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast, we sat down with the legendary Dane Sanders, a man who refuses to settle for an ordinary life and a conventional impact on the world.

Dane is CEO of Tell Me Your Dreams, creator of Men of Discomfort, host of the Converge Podcast, a Story Brand speaker and facilitator, and a certified business coach.

Dane was also a professional photographer for over a decade and has written two best-selling books about the business of creativity. Yet, it’s Dane’s background in philosophy that fueled this conversation.

We discuss:

— The hero’s journey, and what it means to never stop seeking the richness of life.

— How to use fear and resistance as a compass for extreme growth.

— Living a love-shaped existence in the middle of a harsh reality.

— How something can be right, but not right for you.

— Success, and being present in the here and now.

— What it means to be a practicing philosopher who uses everyday experiences to better themselves.

— Playing the infinite game, and finding the courage to be ourselves.

We barely scratched the surface with Dane, but we hope this conversation inspires you to dig deep, and set out on your own hero’s journey. It’s already begun; the choice is yours to heed the call.

“This was one of the best conversations I’ve ever had.” — Vincent

DTD #45: Listening To Your Inner Voice Will Make Life a Whole Lot Better

DTD #45: Listening To Your Inner Voice Will Make Life a Whole Lot Better

Your inner voice; it's probably talking to you right now. The angel and the devil on your shoulders.

We often give our inner voice a negative connotation as it can manifest as the inner critic. But what about when it whispers of our dreams and deepest desires. Do we heed the call when it tells us to follow our hearts and take a risk? When it tells us to go out of our way to lend a hand.

Why don't we listen to it? It's scary. It tells us to do what's unconventional, what goes against the norm, what we've always done. We are seeking happiness and success but often ignore the advice coming from the source that knows us best: our consciousness.

In the words of Viktor Frankl, "Listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long run—in the long run, I say!—success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think of it."

DTD #43: You're on Your Path. Enjoy Every Second of It

We don’t know what we’re doing, but we’re having a hell of a lot of fun along the way.

Join us for a comical dialogue on philosophy, vulnerability, love, and the modern dating culture. We include personal strategies on how we plan for the future while staying fully in the present. We ask some big questions and, as always, act as if we have the answers.

Much of this conversation revolves around the following quote by Aubrey Marcus:

“I spent so much of my life worried about what I was going to become, and whether I was going to be right here right now. God, how much time did I waste afraid that I wasn’t going to be right here right now? If I could change, the only thing I’d change about my whole life would be fearing less that I weren’t going to get here, the place that I was going anyway. I wouldn’t change all the mistakes and mishaps, I needed those, but all the constant worry that I wasn’t going to make it that took me out of the moment. It took me out of enjoying the experiences, smiling or eating my lunch or doing whatever I was doing. Know your mission, have faith you’re going to get there, wherever you go, it’s going to be alright. Just find ways to get out of your head.”

Tune in to learn how we attempt to let go of the stress in life to enjoy the twists and turns of this beautiful journey.

DTD #26: How to Feel Grounded and Move Forward Through Seasons of Uncertainty

Perhaps you’re not exactly where you want to be.

You are somewhere, of course; but often it’s easier or less frightening, not to stop and look around, not to ask questions, in fear of what the answer might be.

Are you happy with your career, your relationships, your path?

You may not know exactly what you want; very few people do. But do you feel like you are standing on solid ground? Or do you feel ungrounded, lost, and unsure of what next steps to take?

To get to where we want to go, we first must recognize where we are.

This can be disheartening, as it makes us face reality. We can no longer wish and hope that things will work themselves out. We can’t hide issues, adverse situations, and character flaws in the fog.

We must honestly assess where we are and face our situation if we wish to ground ourselves. It is only from this solid foundation that we can begin to move forward.

Join us as we discuss personal strategies on how we re-ground ourselves when we feel like we have wandered off course. If you are facing uncertainty in your life, whether career or relationship-related, we hope this episode will i
