Doctor Nurse Podcast

By Sandra Pagenta

What if more nurses saw their nursing skills not being coupled with salary but viewed their skills with business mindset. This podcast answers the question: What options do nurses have with their degrees and what else can you do with your current degree? Every week join me Dr. Sandra Pagenta, an Advanced Practice Nurse (DNP, APRN-BC) as I navigate the "battlefield" of the business of nursing with you. Nurses are so much more capable than we let on, I want to show just how much we can do. I can't wait to have conversations about our journeys and create a community you want to come back to.

DNP Ep. 78: Protecting the Peace of your Nursing Career with Melanie Van Sistine, BSN, RN

Introduction to guest: Melanie Graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and has primarily worked with the Pediatric Population for 4 years. Graduated with my BSN in 2018 after not getting into the professional program for the first time. She took that semester and regrouped, but took an opportunity to study abroad with her Nursing College to Kenya, Africa. She was there for 2 weeks doing community outreach, education, and being one with the Kenyans. FUN fact - her professor who took her is from Kenya and took them to the ‘hut’ she grew up in. She even got to meet her parents and have a meal. She also didn’t pass my NCLEX the first time. Sat there for the full 6 hours and answered all 275 questions. She got my report back and was nearly passing in almost every single category. She took it again and passed in 78 questions! She got her first job as a pediatric nurse at the bedside on an Acute Care floor. They primarily specialized in GI/GU, Endo & Pulm, but saw almost anything under the sun. They had a lot of chronic patients, lots of tubes, and longer stays. Melanie did that for almost 4 years before pausing bedside to support her fRNd’s in creative ways with Mel's Crafty Corner.

DNP Ep. 69: How to Create Passive Income with Your Nursing Knowledge with Dr. Lauren Duroy, DNP

Dr. Lauren Duroy, DNP APRN, FNP-C graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in integrative health and wellness in 2010, Oklahoma City University with my BSN in 2012, and DNP in 2016. She worked in ICU while getting her doctorate. She started my business NursePracPreneurs in 2021 after she hit rock bottom in 2020 running a full-time family practice while getting floated to the ICU & barely seeing her family & hitting near divorce. That's when she learned to be strong as a mother: Memory optimized, Time Hack warrior, & Energy Rockstar. Now she helps other NPs get their life back with time management, stress support, and super learning tips. She helps some do what she does: build courses around their level of expertise and place them on evergreen platforms so they can do less 1:1 coaching/trading time for money. Then, she positions them in high-demand, low-competition searches to build passive income. Recently she also Launched Functional & Integrative Medicine for advanced standards of care. It is a fully accredited 48-contact-hour course that shows NPs how to launch their own Functional Medicine practice. 007 DNP Unscripted- Working Mom Notes With Ashley Reckdenwald, PA

007 DNP Unscripted- Working Mom Notes With Ashley Reckdenwald, PA

Ashley is the Founder of Working Mom Notes, a supportive platform for working mothers.  She struggled to find resources as she returned to work after having her first baby.  Her goal was to connect with a few working moms and share “notes” with one another on how to navigate life as a working mother. Ashley knows that being a mom is hard in and of itself.  Add in the stresses of balancing a job and the combination can really take a toll. It's hard to find support and work through the challenges of being a working mom, whether it's a choice or a necessity.

Ashley uses Instagram to shed light on the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of working mothers.  She is known for providing real and raw moments to her audience.  Her goal is to build confidence in working women and help them feel they have a network of others that can relate to their lifestyle.  Also within this network, Ashley provides topics of discussion to help break stereotypes.  Examples include discussing salary gaps, work travel, maternity leave rights, postpartum depression/anxiety, breastfeeding versus formula feeding, and how to set boundaries both professionally and personally.  By broaching these topics, it allows women to see they are not alone and feel more confident in their thoughts and actions.

Ashley has a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and Biology.  She worked in Manhattan for a physical therapy company as an Athletic Trainer performing sports medicine rehabilitation.  She then went on to graduate school and received a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.  She is a Physician Associate (formally Assistant) with a specialty in orthopedics and sports medicine.

Just as her platform has grown, so has her family.  Ashley lives in New Jersey, is married, and is now a mother to three beautiful little girls ages six, four, and two. She currently spends her days focused entirely on Working Mom Notes and advocating for working women nationwide.

DNP Ep. 67: How Nurse Consulting Could Be The Next Step for Your Career with Nena Hart, MSN, RN.

DNP Ep. 67: How Nurse Consulting Could Be The Next Step for Your Career with Nena Hart, MSN, RN.

Nena Hart is a Registered Nurse with a Masters in Nursing Administration and has a history of transforming stagnant operations struggling with their staffing and systems into thriving regions with high-performing teams.

Through more than a decade of post-acute care leadership, Nena has seen the negative effects of staffing instability on census growth, quality and survey outcomes. Nena was able to grow the census in her own region from 700 to over 1500 patients and opened 10 denovo locations, all in under 3 years.

She is a certified ACHC and CHAP accreditation consultant in Home Care, Palliative Care, Hospice, and Home Health. As the area vice president of operations, she led her region to the largest single-parent provider survey in the nation at that time.

She is a Certified Lean Healthcare Professional (CLHP) and is the Owner of Hart Healthcare Solutions, which helps post-acute care organizations take back the operational health of their organization, improve efficiency, stop the vicious cycle of critical staffing, enhance survey outcomes, and ultimately improve patient care.

She worked her way up the corporate ladder for over 10 years and was finally recruited to her "dream job" as a CEO in Hawaii, only to be fired five weeks later.
Left with a huge new lease and no income, she started her own consulting and coaching company, working from home, matching her CEO salary in half the hours, in her leggings.

She now helps other exhausted nurses embrace entrepreneurship and love nursing again with her podcast and coaching business Nurses Making Waves! She lives in Hawaii and enjoys reading, cooking, doing puzzles with her kids, and going to the beach with her family during "normal" office hours.

006 Doctor Nurse Podcast Unscripted: Side Hustle Option with Jayne Havens Sleep Consultant

006 Doctor Nurse Podcast Unscripted: Side Hustle Option with Jayne Havens Sleep Consultant

As a new parent and overwhelmed by exhaustion, Jayne left behind her job in corporate sales, ready to fully embrace her new role as a mom. She loved her son, of course, but grew increasingly frustrated by his frequent night wakings. She found herself reading everything she could find in order to get him to sleep through the night.

Years later, when her daughter was born, Jayne applied what she learned once again, implementing healthy and independent sleep habits very early on, and before long, her entire family was able to get the sleep they needed. It was life-changing!

Friends quickly took notice of the fact that Jayne’s children were both fabulous sleepers, and they began coming to her for help with their own sleep challenges.

Through word-of-mouth referrals, Jayne began helping friends of friends through the sleep training process. In doing so, Jayne realized her passion and skill for helping families to achieve quality sleep for their children, and Snooze Fest by Jayne Havens was born. Jayne quickly established herself as a leader in the industry, building a strong reputation for taking good care of her clients, providing top-notch service along with expertise, and successfully leading families from desperate and exhausted to grateful and well-rested.

A few years later, Jayne's passion for sleep consulting, her background in sales, and her experience as an entrepreneur collided in a new way. After years of research and educating herself on the science of children’s sleep, child development, and sleep training techniques, and after obtaining her sleep consultant certification, Jayne launched the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management (CPSM)—a sleep consultant certification program with a uniquely self-paced course, integrated learning approach, and full-bodied curriculum.

Through CPSM, Jayne leveraged her proprietary CPSM Success Method to train, mentor, and certify others to do this incredibly rewarding work and set them up for success as both sleep consultants and small business owners. CPSM has trained hundreds of sleep consultants to carry this work forward and continues to grow.

DNP Ep. 60: The Journey of the Nursing Informatics Super-User

Fatima Sharon Gatela MBA, BSN, RN-BC in Informatics Nursing. Fatima has a deep and enduring passion for Healthcare, Nursing, and Technology. She currently works at one of the country’s leading academic medical centers, where she helps to ensure that electronic health record (EHR) clinical documentation and content are consistent with federal and state regulations, as well as with organizational policy. She facilitates the improvement and development of EHR tools. She is also involved in various aspects of clinical informatics, data analytics, and process improvement projects, among others. Previous to this, she was an EHR application project team member at two of the United States’ top-ranked healthcare systems, where she was involved in creating and deploying electronic documentation tools, and troubleshooting EHR and documentation, workflow, and project-related issues. Her clinical experience prior to her transition to Nursing Informatics culminated in a role as a Neurosurgery/Trauma critical care nurse at another wonderful, top-ranked academic medical center, where she was also a clinical application superuser for two EHR implementations (IDX CareCast and Epic). Her advocacy is twofold – to encourage more clinicians to become involved in informatics-related jobs, roles, and projects, as well as to help them have the tools to excel and be happy in their chosen career path whether it is at the bedside or elsewhere. She believes that nurses have a wealth of caring experience, critical thinking skills, and in-depth knowledge of clinical situations and workflows that enable us to help each other, our workplaces, and ultimately, our patients and their families, in many different ways.

DNP Ep. 57: The Journey of Clincepts

DNP Ep. 57: The Journey of Clincepts

Josie Tate is a family nurse practitioner with a heart to see others succeed. Since starting her nursing journey with a BSN in 2006, she has enjoyed working in a variety of settings with a strong background in inpatient and outpatient cardiology services. Her most memorable times as a nurse include being a preceptor to nursing students and mentor to newly hired employees.

While she enjoys her role as an NP, she is also passionate about her life outside of practice. She is a wife to her college sweetheart and mom to three fun-filled kids.

Soon after becoming a nurse practitioner in 2019, she saw new NPs experience a disconnect between obtaining an advanced degree and embracing the title of advanced practice provider. To bridge that gap, she created Clincepts, a job search solution to help nurse practitioners get happily hired.

Josie empowers nurse practitioners to focus on 3 major aspects: passion, pay (beyond just salary), and productivity. She teaches strategies that help NPs articulate their unique professional stories by assisting with resume creation and interview preparation. With this, they can have that ideal job they are passionate about and be paid well for what they do. In addition, she shares ways to be efficient at work, so they can enjoy their life outside of work.

DNP Ep. 56: The Journey of the Founder of The Point Retreats

DNP Ep. 56: The Journey of the Founder of The Point Retreats

Christa Rymal, RN, MSN is The Point Retreats Founder, Co-Owner & CEO. She has worked in the healthcare industry for over 20 years in emergency medicine, cardiac care, orthopedics, primary care, diabetes education and endocrinology. She has a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, Masters Degree in HealthCare Leadership, Advanced training from the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Institute of Functional Medicine, and American Academy of Functional Medicine.

It was during her time working as a diabetes nurse educator, followed by her role as Director of Diabetes Care and Endocrinology, that she was motivated to be a change agent in the way we treat and manage chronic disease. She was alarmed at the increased prevalence of diabetes and the complex nature and cost of managing the disease. She was inspired by those patients who became partners in their care and with the right support, education, and coaching were empowered to make lifestyle changes that resulted in improved health and happiness. After initiating a “Living Well with Diabetes” series of classes with a local culinary kitchen, where providers, patients, and family members participated in innovative disease management cooking classes, she was determined to bring the science and practice of lifestyle medicine to more people living with a chronic disease or aiming to prevent one. This was the starting point for her change in personal health, passion for lifestyle and functional medicine, and the turning point in her career in healthcare. She realized the important role that nurses serve as they speak the language of medicine, healing, and health.

After reaching out to those who have personally or professionally inspired her journey to improved health, their dynamite “The Point” team of experts was created! Experts in lifestyle and functional medicine, but equally as important, experts in pursuing adventure, sharing laughter, providing support, encouraging greatness, and helping others achieve their personal goals!  When she's  not spending time at “The Point” you can find her spending time with her family and friends, watching her daughter’s basketball and soccer games, hiking, camping and canoeing in the Boundary Waters, downhill skiing, spending time on our farm, playing pickleball, yoga, traveling, going to a music concert, cooking, or continuing to study all things related to health, fitness, nutrition, and functional/lifestyle medicine.

003 Doctor Nurse Unscripted: Breastfeeding Hacks for the Working Nurse Mom

003 Doctor Nurse Unscripted: Breastfeeding Hacks for the Working Nurse Mom

This week on the Doctor Nurse Unscripted Episode I wanted to share content on breastfeeding hacks for the working mom. Since August is National Breastfeeding Month, I couldn't think of a better time to sit down and chat with a breastfeeding expert. I know that when I went back to work I was overwhelmed with not only becoming a new mom, but also learning how to feed my kid while I was working. I would have loved some guidance specifically tailored to a working nurse mom to help me stay successful in my journey. Remember, I do not just want to help you figure out your careers-but how to be successful in all the areas of life nurse moms juggle.

So I got to sit down and chat with Sabrina Barber. She is a registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Childbirth Doula serving families in the prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric realm for the last 10 years. She is the owner of Motherly Love Lactation Services, co-founder of Baby BLISS Feeding Collaborative of Central Florida, LLC. She is a mama of 2 with feeding difficulties, tongue ties, and severe food allergies. She opened her private practice to serve families in the way she needed support! She offer in-person consultations in Orlando, FL, breastfeeding/pumping online workshops for families, and virtual visits worldwide!

DNP Ep. 49: The Journey of the Intermittent Fasting Expert NP

Cynthia Thurlow, founder/CEO of the Everyday Wellness Project, a MSN NP from John Hopkins in 2000 and author of Primal Eating and Intermittent Fasting Transformation: The 45 Day Program. She is also the host of the Everyday Wellness Podcast.

She has clinical experience in both the ER and cardiology, for nearly 20 years. Although she knows and respects the power of conventional medicine to treat disease and save lives, she began to think more about the root causes of chronic health issues. She recognized the powerful relationship between food and her patients’ health and wellness. This led her to do advanced training in nutrition and functional testing so she could help others enjoy optimal health before they needed emergency care.

Then this passion became personal. In 2019, as she was traveling back home to Washington, DC, from a romantic Hawaiian vacation with her husband, Cynthia had a serious health scare. It was at that moment she decided she was gonna live BIG no matter what.

The YouTube video of her TEDx talk on IF, as of May 2022 has been viewed by over 11 million people. Which has lead to incredible opportunities for her career. Her passion is nutritional science, but she is most proud of her titles of mom and wife! She has two boys, including two Doodles and a loving, patient, and supportive husband. It's important for her to be fully present and invested in these relationships, She is on a mission to help other women experience optimal wellness so they can focus on the things and people that are most important in their life!

DNP Ep. 46: The Journey of the Sarah Michelle NP Review

Sarah Michelle, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, FNP-BC runs a test prep company for primary care nurse practitioners that centers around confidence building and anxiety dampening. When she was preparing for my her board exam, she felt that there wasn't a board review out there for someone like herself that suffered from crippling anxiety. So she made one with these two things as the focus and gave it to all of her classmates for free. It then evolved past any of her initial ideas or expectations. Education is her passion, and she has a Master's degree in Nursing Education in addition to a Post Master's certificate for my FNP. She has taught in a variety of settings- starting as a tutor in undergrad, began teaching actual nursing classes just a couple of years into being a nurse, and this is definitely now her largest "teaching stage."

DNP Ep. 43: The Journey of the PsychLife Tee Co.

Ashley received her Bachelor's degree from Florida State University with a degree in International Affairs with a minor in Religion. She began working in the insurance industry and obtained a Masters in Healthcare Administration to make herself more marketable for the company. Even with multiple degrees something deep inside her heart was yearning for something far greater than what her employer could offer her. She wanted to care for people. She obtained her a Associates' degree in nursing in 2012 and started her nursing career in the NICU taking care of tiny babies! Still feeling like she was missing something in her nursing career the thought of being a psych nurse seemed thrilling. She was offered the job and from day one, she was finally "home" because that "feeling" was GONE! She was and is currently working at an acute psychiatric unit at the Veterans Hospital, As she cared for the veterans and listened to their stories, she walked away wondering - What contributions can I make to the world to prevent people from feeling this way?"

She returned to school in 2019 in pursuit of becoming a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and graduated in August 2021 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She then released her apparel company PsychLife Tee Co. from her desire to create a positive experience for those who felt "different" by normalizing the conversation around mental health. Her challenge to all mental health professionals is to keep going and to start a movement UNTIL THE STIGMA IS NO MORE!

DNP Ep. 26: The Journey of TheNetWorth Nurse

Savannah Arroyo is the Founder & CEO of Networth Nurse™. She works Part Time as an RN at a beautiful hospital here in Los Angeles, California. She is also a Real Estate Investor.

When she first started working as a Registered Nurse, she naturally found myself working in leadership positions. She served on committees, helped lead process improvement initiatives and worked to problem solve critical situations. Shortly after she started working, she went back to school to receive my Masters of Science in Nursing Leadership and Administration. Since then she has led clinical services in a variety of settings.

Working as a Registered Nurse has taught her how to thrive in a fast paced, interdisciplinary team of medical professionals. She has had the privilege of working with unforgettable patients, brilliant physicians and caretakers that will forever hold a place in her heart.

While on maternity leave with her second daughter – She started evaluating her current investments and her ability to build wealth, and became so discouraged thinking that the next break I’d get from work would be when I was 65 and retired. She was under the impression that the only way to build wealth was to pick up extra shifts at the hospital – until she discovered Real Estate investing. Real Estate investing is a powerful tool to build wealth. After a great deal of research, education and team building she started investing in Real Estate. She currently operates Real Estate Syndications, primarily for Healthcare Professionals. She discovered there is a huge gap in financial education for high income earners. The majority of Nurses that she knows are making good money, but are still living paycheck to paycheck. Savannah realized there was a huge need for resources, community, and education, which led to the creation of Networth Nurse™.

DNP Ep. 16: The Journey of the Nurse Executive Coach and Author

DNP Ep. 16: The Journey of the Nurse Executive Coach and Author

Sarah Bell is a leadership coach who works with nurse managers, nurse leaders and other healthcare leaders who seek leadership development coaching. Owner of Bell’s Breakthrough Leadership Coaching, Sarah provides one-on-one and group coaching that teach her clients the skills needed to transition from being outstanding individual contributors to being exceptional nurse leaders.

Sarah has been a leadership coach for nurse leaders since 2013. She is an International Coaches Federation Professional Certified Coach and certified by the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching. Sarah is a registered nurse and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Having spent more than 27 years in the medical field, Sarah has held various roles including vice president, regional director, training and education manager, as well as several positions as a patient care nurse. Once faced with many of the same personal and professional challenges that she now helps her clients overcome, Sarah was inspired to become a leadership coach after working with a coach of her own and finding success. Sarah came to the realization that despite having independent career success, having the ability to inspire, empower and lead others to perform at their best requires a different set of skills.

Specifically, Sarah understands that many nurses get promoted because of their exceptional patient care, but often lack the official training needed to be successful nurse managers. Sarah works with both individual nurse leaders and healthcare companies to help nurses in three distinct ways. First, Sarah helps her clients understand and embrace their roles as leaders.

Second, she teaches clients how to shift themselves and their team from daily workplace drama to focusing on what matters most – quality patient care and key performance indicators.

Third, Sarah helps her clients develop a coaching leadership approach to help them connect, engage and empower their teams, which leads to increased manager and employee retention, as well as enhanced engagement.

The women on today's' podcast are the podcast hosts for the 4 NPs Podcast: Oneida, Colleen, Alicia and Christina. Four women who met in nursing school 17 years ago. They have been through it all: nursing school, work, balancing life, relationships, children, new careers, more education, more new careers and now, this podcast. As nurses they are part of a sisterhood; as friends, we support each other through it all. They've learned the hard way that there isn't much support out there for new nurses/practitioners, so we decided to start this podcast to talk about it.
