Patrick is Head of Public Affairs at the European Parliament in Ireland and in his article for The European Network’s EU50 series Patrick discusses how we Irish seem to be able to embrace bigger ideas of who we are without losing anything. We all move seamlessly from being passionate Dubs, to diehard Munster or Leinster supporters to proud Irishmen and Irishwomen without being any less of the former. Patrick believes that we shouldn’t hesitate to embrace our European identity as much as our Irishness.

The Moldovan Coffee Break Episode 2
Welcome to Episode two of The Moldovan Coffee Break. A European Network production.
In this six-part podcast series, we will be casting a spotlight on the country of Moldova and in particular, life for six young people so as to examine what it is like to grow up in the Moldova of 2021.

Co-hosted by Ken Sweeney and Loredana Prijmireanu, their aim is to portray Moldova for what it really is - a culture rich country with a unique past and vibrant future.
Loredana has been sitting down for a coffee with the six young individuals over the last few months and each episode will feature a conversation with one of our interviewees.
In episode two, we meet Vasile Harghel – a medical student studying in Moldova and also working in a Covid-19 hospital ward. We chat with Vasile about being a university student in Moldova and working in the fight against the pandemic.

Eurochat - Polish and Hungarian democracy with Edit Zgut
Welcome to episode 26 of our Eurochat series. In this episode, we will be taking an in depth analysis of the current political systems in Poland and Hungary and with us to discuss this is Edit Zgut.
Edit Zgut is a political scientist and a journalist, focusing on the democratic and rule of law backsliding in Hungary and Poland. She is teaching at the Center for Europe at the University of Warsaw, and is a doctoral researcher at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Edit is also a DemocraCE fellow at Visegrad Insight and a Rethink CEE fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
Since escaping the clutches of the communist regime in the late 1980’s both Poland and Hungary embarked on a path to liberal democracy almost immediately. The last thirty years has seen numerous free elections and both states have embraced EU membership and all that it entails. But in the last brief five years or so, Poland and Hungary have been moving towards the christian fundamentalist right with both administrations under one party rule in the form of Fidesz in Hungary and PiS in Poland.
So how and why has this happened? Are the people of Poland and Hungary being coerced into following a more extreme path or is it the case that this form of ideology has always existed and only now coming to light?

In this episode, we are discussing the current political crisis that is happening in Belarus. Helping us find out why the situation has arisen, is journalist, Viktoryia Kavalchuk and communication specialist, Vlad Kovalevsky.
Belarus, the former Soviet bloc state, has been described in the past as the last European dictatorship. Despite so-called free elections since its independence from the former USSR in 1991, the current administration under the leadership of President Alexander Lukashenko has continued to top every election poll.
However, following on the most recent election which yet again saw Lukashenko win by a considerable margin, mass demonstrations have begun across the state and continue to gain momentum. We are going to take a look at how the current crisis has arisen and try to see how it is going to play out.

Eurochat - Polish Presidential election special with Martin Mycielski
On the 28th of June Poland is going to the ballot box to vote in a new President and in this episode we assess the candidates, their policies and try to find out who is the favourite for the highest position in Poland. To help us, we are joined by Journalist and Director of Public Affairs at Open Dialogue Foundation, Martin Mycielski.
The Polish Presidential elections had been initially planned for the 10th of May, but they faced an inevitable postponement until the 28th June as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The government, under control by populist conservative party Law and Justice made continuous attempts to hold the elections in the middle of crisis, even tried to organise them by postal voting only, yet the pressure from all sides of the political spectrum, including from their own party members, forced them to reschedule onto a new date.
Now with a few days to go, the race is on and we take a look at who’s who in the fight for the seat in the Presidential Palace.

Eurochat - EU Conference Interpreting Agents dispute
Episode 21 of our Eurochat series of podcasts is a special edition that will focus on a current dispute involving conference interpreters in the EU institutions who are facing a massive loss of income as a result of reduced work because of the Covid 19 pandemic.
For those who are tuned in on the EU PR machine, the term “ EU Solidarity” is one that’s been well promoted by both the internal and external avenues. We've heard it mentioned in many of the speeches by the Commission and parliamentary leaders in their quests to bring us together in this time of crisis, but it seems that one group of workers who are involved at the core of the EU institutions and are indeed vital in the everyday running of it, are being left behind.
In the wake of the Covid19 pandemic, approximately 1,800 Conference Interpreting Agents, or ACIs, face financial uncertainty over the European Union's decision to cease payments, and because they are unable to claim temporary unemployment due to their special tax status, their position at the moment remains unclear.
Our guest is Nick Pope who is an interpreter and a representative of the ACIs and we’ll be asking him what is the reasoning behind the EU’s decision to effectively cut loose over 1800 people. We also had a conversation with ACI Svetlana Spaic who is based in Brussels, and we listened to Svetlana’s story.

Shortly after, President Ilham Aliyev dismissed his chief of staff, Ramiz Mehdiyev, who has served as the Head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan from 1994 to 2019, Azerbaijani MPs approved a proposal to dissolve parliament and ask President Aliyev to call a snap election on February the 9th.
