What the News Tells You About Trafficking – And What It Doesn’t
November 3rd, 2022 - While news articles about child trafficking, human trafficking, and sex trafficking are likely to be fairly accurate in the details of what they report, they have a tendency to emphasize particular angles or perspectives. What We Don’t Know About Traffickers
September 15th, 2022 - There’s still so much we don’t know about traffickers. Trafficking to Cambodia
September 15th, 2022 - There has been a rise in trafficking, whereby people are lured by job offers for positions in call centers or similar ventures, but then find themselves trafficked to Cambodia, subjected to beatings, torture, enslavement, and sometimes even killed. They are forced to work incredibly long hours for crime syndicates and they are forced to perpetuate online scams. Listen to learn more.

Reframing Migration
September 8th, 2022 - Migration gets a bad rap. In this week’s episode, we take a closer look at the beneficial aspects of migration–and its inevitability. Reframing migration can help us better cope with its impact and better support the people who move. Listen to learn more.

TIP Special Focus: Corruption and Trafficking
August 25th, 2022 - This year’s Trafficking in Persons Report expressly calls out corruption for its linkage to trafficking, going so far as to cite a UNODC report that argues trafficking in persons could not happen on a large scale if it weren’t for corruption. In this final segment reviewing the report, we’ll discuss in more detail how corruption facilitates trafficking and some of the Report’s key recommendations. Listen to learn more.

TIP Report Special Focus: Climate Change
August 18th, 2022 - This year’s TIP Report highlights the looming threat of climate change and its links to vulnerability to human trafficking. Climate change-related disasters disproportionately impact people who are already vulnerable to trafficking, and as environmental conditions get worse, more people will be impacted. It's estimated that human trafficking has the potential to increase by 20-30% at the hand of humanitarian disasters causing lost livelihoods and disrupted families. Listen to learn more.

Trafficking in the News
July 21st, 2022 - The latest in the news about human trafficking is a great illustration of the breadth of extremes this crime touches. Recent revelations about an Olympic athlete’s background as a child trafficking victim come concurrently with news reports about a large network of Rohingya girl victims trafficked from Bangladesh to India. As the former gains intense media attention, the hope is that it might shine a light on the plight of so many others who suffer similarly. Listen to learn more.

Urban Fragility and Why It Matters
July 14th, 2022 - As people move from rural areas to cities in the hopes of escaping climate-related disasters and finding more stable jobs and income, it is expected that the influx of people can strain cities’ infrastructures and resources. If cities are unprepared to handle the influx, it can lead to strife, conflict, violence, and crime–a situation likely to be ripe for traffickers to exploit. Urban fragility, therefore, is something to pay close attention to, to think holistically about how to protect people from trafficking and exploitation. Listen to learn more.

The Overlooked Victims of Trafficking: Families
June 23rd, 2022 - Anti-trafficking intervention and aftercare services tend to be almost exclusively centered on the victims, which seems natural, understandable, and correct. What this overlooks, however, is the impact on their families–the people whose father, mother, sister, brother, or child has gone missing, and who may not know where to turn for help. These people are often overlooked and sidelined, though the trauma they experience, too, is very real. Listen to learn more.

The Limits of Awareness Raising
June 16th, 2022 - When anti-trafficking organizations first started thinking about what prevention might look like, the biggest component was awareness-raising. The idea was to reach as many people as possible and warn them about trafficking by telling them what it is, how it can happen, and how to report it. It's essential. But time and experience have shown that it isn’t enough. Listen to learn more.

A Positive Spin on the Data Problem
June 9th, 2022 - People from across the anti-trafficking field are finding multitudinous ways to study trafficking. While we still might not have a lot of very precise data, we are coming at the data problem from a variety of angles–and that might end up giving us a fuller understanding of the picture than we would if we rested on one or two more precise measures alone. Why Implementing Laws Against Trafficking is a Challenge
June 2nd, 2022 - For the most part, laws against trafficking, labor abuses, and child sexual exploitation exist. While it’s true that some legal frameworks could be strengthened, a large part of the problem has less to do with the existence or lack of laws and more to do with a breakdown in implementing them. Emerging Trend: Thais Trafficked For Online Gambling
May 19th, 2022 - We’ve talked about how COVID increases the risk of trafficking. We have also talked about the rise of online sexual exploitation. A growing number of Thai nationals are being trafficked to neighboring countries and forced to perform labor for places like call centers and illegal online gambling sites. Listen to learn more.

Kids As Traffickers
May 12th, 2022 - When we think of child trafficking, we generally assume the trafficker is an older adult who preys on minors. That has typically been the case, with ages primarily ranging from traffickers in their 20s to in their 60s. However, our peers in the anti-trafficking field in South East Asia have reported that they are seeing an emerging trend of younger people becoming involved – as perpetrators. Listen to learn more.

The Stakes of Trafficking are Rising
May 3rd, 2022 - Trafficking is already a horrific, damaging, and traumatizing experience. Unfortunately, there are dynamics in play now that are making it worse – not just in the sense that the amount of trafficking is increasing, but that new challenges contribute to the damage trafficking can cause. In the past two years, COVID measures like lockdowns, quarantines, and travel restrictions did not reduce the incidence of trafficking. Listen to learn more.

Understanding Trafficking As a Spectrum
April 7th, 2022 - For the sake of ease, discussion about trafficking tends to revolve around categories: labor trafficking, child trafficking, sex trafficking, etc. Another way to think of trafficking is as part of a spectrum of abuse and exploitation (concept courtesy of a legal training hosted by The Remedy Project, USAID Asia CTIP, and USAID Thailand CTIP). On one end, there is decent work that follows international and national laws and is undertaken with free, willing, and informed consent. On the other end is slavery. In the middle, there could be work that is harsh but does not violate regulations. Listen to learn more.

Middle Class Women Turning to Online Sex Work
March 17th, 2022 - Highly educated, middle-class women have been turning online to social media to earn money in exchange for explicit photos and videos of themselves. Oftentimes, they cite being saddled with enormous debts from student loans and not enough income from “normal jobs” as the impetus behind jumping on a quick way to get out from under the mountain of debt. There is an element of glamorizing it too, with lures of being able to afford luxury goods. Listen to learn more.

An Update on Policy Priorities
March 10th, 2022 - In response to last year’s Trafficking in Persons Report, when Thailand was downgraded to the Tier 2 Watch List, the agenda has focused on intensifying efforts to move up towards Tier 1. The report offered recommendations to improve the country’s standing by: increasing law enforcement’s capacity to investigate and prosecute, investing in multi-disciplinary training, increasing understanding of the linkages between forced labor and trafficking, facilitating government collaboration, and increasing trauma-informed care and treatment of survivors at every step of the way through the legal and recovery process. It is a policy priority to try to meet these recommendations. Listen to learn more.

Tuesday is International Women’s Day!
March 3rd, 2022 - Tuesday, March 8 is International Women’s Day! This year, the theme is “Break the Bias” and the call is for us all to help create a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. This goal is especially important for us, as we continue in our mission to prevent child trafficking. In our experience, discrimination renders marginalized people even more vulnerable to trafficking or makes it harder for them to access help if they have become victims of exploitation. Latest Updates From Our Work on the Ground
February 24th, 2022 - As we shared last week, traffickers are capitalizing on opportunities the pandemic presents. Trafficking has not diminished, so we believe it is more important than ever to focus on prevention. We must address all the factors that push or lure people into risky situations or leave them unprotected if they are trafficked. Research shows that prevention programs are most effective when combining awareness-raising with actual material support. Listen to learn more.

How Traffickers Capitalized on COVID
February 17th, 2022 - It might be tempting to hope that lockdowns, social distancing measures, travel restrictions, and fear of illness would have curbed trafficker activity. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Traffickers have adapted to COVID challenges in a variety of ways. Listen to learn more.

How anti-trafficking organizations are adapting to pandemic challenges
February 3rd, 2022 - At the beginning of the pandemic, you may remember, there were predictions that we would see an increase in trafficking, as well as instances of other kinds of abuse, like domestic violence. Meanwhile, service providers, like shelters, would be hampered in their ability to help their clients or respond to increased demand, especially in lockdown situations. As we’ve talked about before, these predictions have largely turned out to be true. However, now in our third year of this pandemic, we can take a look at how anti-trafficking organizations, especially in aftercare services, are adapting to challenges brought by COVID19. COVID & Child Labor
February 3rd, 2022 - For nearly two decades, the use of child labor had been on a very promising downward trend. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 crisis has reversed it. While child labor had been decreasing since the year 2000, a UNICEF report released last June states that the number of children engaged in child labor has now risen to 160 million worldwide. The report further warns that, “globally, 9 million additional children are at risk of being pushed into child labour by the end of 2022 as a result of the pandemic.” And, children who had already been engaged in child labor were pushed to work longer hours or in worse conditions, especially where employers might have taken advantage of cutbacks in labor safety inspections. Maxwell / Epstein Case in Context
January 27th, 2022 - After years of allegations and prolonged intense media attention, the Ghislaine Maxwell trial finally ended in conviction last month. Because it received so much public attention, it might be helpful to put this case in context, to shed light on sex trafficking–both in how it aligns with how most cases of trafficking happen and also in how it was strikingly different. What Does A Commitment to Freedom Look Like in 2022?
January 13th, 2022 - It’s the beginning of the third year of a global pandemic, and many of us are coping with the Omicron wave. It feels like so many are getting hit with this one. Even if you and your family have so far managed to escape COVID, you likely know others who haven’t been so lucky. It’s a long time to go through upheaval and a long time without a sense of normalcy–only a continual attempt to ride whatever wave of “new normal” we face.
But…traffickers don’t stop, even in the face of a pandemic. So… Listen to learn more.

Arisa & The Value of Girls’ Education
December 12th, 2021 - Among the Hmong people, it is common to believe that girls’ education is less important than for boys. When a girl gets married, she becomes part of the husband’s family and no longer contributes to her own. From many parents’ perspectives, especially among older generations, even a college-educated woman will find value only with her husband’s family. For families that are in poverty, it seems to be not worth the investment. One of our students, Arisa, faces this situation. Listen to learn more.

How We’re Adapting Outreach
October 21st, 2021 - The COVID pandemic has made it even more of a challenge to do outreach to areas, like migrant communities, that are already difficult to reach. However, our team has taken on the challenge and found creative ways to still spread knowledge and awareness to marginalized people.
Because of COVID, many things have been prohibited: large gatherings, the travel of migrants, and outsiders accessing migrant camps. These restrictions mean we can’t do the outreach sessions or workshops as we normally would. We’ve had to get creative! Listen to learn more.

An Update on COVID’s Impact on Our Communities
October 7th, 2021 - While Thailand managed to avoid the brunt of COVID-19 cases last year–including a 200-day stretch with 0 cases–this year, Thailand has been hit much harder. Strict lockdowns and border closures kept case numbers low in 2020. COVID’s second wave hit migrant worker communities outside Bangkok in January 2021, but it was well contained. Climate Change and Human Trafficking: Part 3
September 29th, 2021 - People in the communities with which we work are already beginning to see the impacts of climate change and the instability it brings to their lives. Though they live close to the earth and its natural resources and their communities have contributed relatively little to the causes of climate change, they are among the first to become most vulnerable to extreme weather events. Climate Change & Human Trafficking: Part 2
September 23rd, 2021 - In Southeast Asia, climate change looks like a whiplash between extremes: rising heat, intense rainy seasons, and droughts. We’ve witnessed this in our own community of families and children we support. The intensity of the rainy season damaged their crops. Ginger became moldy and spoiled. Floods ruined the rice. Droughts caused water shortages, making farming–and their livelihood–untenable. (A drought in 2010 was so severe, the Mekong dried up to the point people could even walk across it in places. In Chiang Rai, people were unable to fish, thus cutting off a vital food source.) Landslides disrupted access to work and hospitals. And the extreme weather led to other stressors and added costs, like fixing weather-related damage to housing. Some people’s roofs even came entirely off their homes. Many families had to leave the community to search for other work. This is the story of how climate change can put people at risk of labor exploitation and human trafficking. Listen to learn more.

Climate Change And Human Trafficking: Part 1
September 16th, 2021 - In 2018, a flood hit a Hmong village in the Nan Province of northern Thailand in the nighttime. Villagers woke up to find their houses floating toward the river. A landslide occurred, an essential bridge broke, two children died, over 400 homes were damaged, and the farmers–the vast majority of the villagers–lost their entire crop and a whole year’s income. Teaching Kids About Trafficking
September 8th, 2021 - A couple of years ago, one of our partner organizations reported on a case where a teenage boy had been arrested for trafficking. A Family At Risk
December 22, 2020 - When Arpa*, mother of two girls Preeda* and Ying*, was growing up, she wanted to study. “But we were poor. We didn’t even have rice to eat. So I decided to go to work. I studied until 3rd grade. I can read and write a bit and that was enough. I wanted my kids to have a chance to study more than me. But in the past, when school started, we would really struggle to find money to buy the bags, the school supplies, the things they needed.” These challenges would be enough to make them candidates for our program, but it’s not the only thing putting the family at risk. A New Facilitator of Trafficking
December 15, 2020 - When we first started working in anti-trafficking, poverty was the trafficker, the biggest factor aiding and abetting vulnerability to exploitation.
