Episode 18: Emotions & Edits
This week Tess & Sarah talk about emotions, how they show up, what we can do to explore them, maybe challenge them, and what we can do to edit and support ourselves.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
[2:30] Go do what you’ve been putting off, it’ll help lift tension
[6:20] Emotions aren’t just mental, but they also affect us physically, too
[11:00] It can be beneficial to explore what evidence we have for our thoughts, emotions
[14:40] Explaining Compassion Focused Therapies
[22:00] It’s good to explore not only the “negative” but also the “positive” emotions
[32:00] Always important to meet ourselves, and the emotions we experience, with compassion!
[38:50] Writing down how we’re feeling emotionally, physically, can be very helpful in allowing, processing and releasing.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Notice the emotions you’re feeling with compassion, without going into the narrative, and sit with it if you can. If it’s too difficult to sit with it right now, that’s okay. Notice how the emotion shows up in the body, where do you feel it? Ex. I’m noticing I’m feeling quite anxious. My chest feels tight, my shoulders are pulling inward.

[30:34] Use all the tools that are at your disposal to help you, including medication if it’s needed. Kylie says it’s important to cut the stigma around medication.
[37:06] Pushing down your emotions is like “holding down a basketball underwater” and eventually they pop-up and we don’t know who it’s going to smack in the face
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: You have the freedom to express yourself and love yourself. It’s okay to cry, it’s okay to explore your feelings and allow them to come, as slowly as you need to and get the support that you need to do that.

Episode 16 - Grounding in Nature with Shannon Crow
This week Tess & Sarah talk to Shannon Crow (she/her/hers), a yoga teacher, trainer, founder of Pelvic Health Professionals and host of the successful podcast, The Connected Yoga Teacher. This episode explores the benefits of connecting to and grounding in nature.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
[6:27] Happiness comes from not trying to control everything and allowing life to flow. Joy and happiness does not hinge on controlling every aspect of life–like what centerpiece to place on the table for Thanksgiving.
[15:44] Shannon shares that walking outside in the garden each morning without any expectations is a type of walking meditation for her. Taking photos helps her to notice the small details that bring her joy.
[26:02] “The more we can be aware of what’s happening in nature, the more we care for it.”
[29:20] When difficult times come, Shannon goes out into the garden to help her feel calmer and more grounded.
[33:10] Yoga can look like gardening.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: If you feel like there is something that isn’t quite fitting right in your life, try going outside daily with no goal. Just to go outside, look around, and be in nature. (Don’t forget to dress for the weather!)

Episode 15 - Finding Balance in the NOW with Brian Jones
This week Tess & Sarah talk to Brian Jones, a friend and former colleague of Sarah’s and a fellow therapist. Throughout this episode we constantly come back to finding balance and being in the here and now, instead of in the past or in the future, not only helps us to ground but often brings lots of happiness.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Happiness is a cocktail of balance, contentment, and fulfillment
Being unhappy isn’t a bad thing: Without darkness you cannot have light and without light your cannot have darkness
Happiness isn’t external, it’s internal
Being present and in the NOW!
Take time to check-in regularly to see how things are going personally–the good and the bad–and see where adjustments can be made to support yourself better moving forward
Tess’ 10-Minute Method
We’re accountable for our own happiness, seeking help can be included in that
Even a 30sec cold shower can increase dopamine and decrease cortisol (stress hormone)
Pause, be in the moment to support, and reflect with compassion
Whatever you’re feeling in the moment, that’s probably what you should be feeling. It can be uncomfortable to sit in those emotions, but sitting in it for a bit and being okay sitting in it, amazing things can happen. And the next question is, what am I going to do now?
The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse book mentioned by Brian
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Be kind to yourself and kind to others. And on that note, go read The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackesy book Brian mentions!
(Side note: We have got the book and are reading it, too!)

Episode 14 - Editing Expectations
In this episode Sarah and Tess talk about what it means to edit our expectations so we can show up with more compassion for ourselves and bring more happiness into our lives.
Many of us struggle with feeling the need to constantly do more or be perfect. These are normal things to feel. But that doesn't mean that we have to get stuck in the same cycles of perfectionism and unachievable expectations. In this episode The Happy Edit sisters explore ways of reframing and editing how we approach the expectations we hold for ourselves.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Take a moment to stop in the moment, and take notice of what that expectation is. Notice is the expectation serving you in any way right now. Does this help me? Or does it cause me distress?

Episode 13 - Peace in Awareness with Lillie Jewell
This week Tess & Sarah talk to Lillie Jewell, an experienced yoga teacher, Ayurveda practitioner and nutritionist. Throughout this episode with Lillie we explore how peace and happiness comes from connecting with our awareness, pausing and understanding that no emotion we have and no role we play is what makes us, us.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
[7:20] Awareness is looking at the Self, detaching from the roles that we play in life and connecting with the deeper purpose of the Self and life itself.
[11:30] Cultivating peace is individual. To cultivate peace we need to look at why we feel certain emotions and be aware of what it is without judging it.
[24:47] The practice of yoga postures is really focusing our attention on what is going on inside the body. Becoming aware of these things during practice helps to support ourselves in difficult life moments.
[35:40] Sharing our story is an important way to help others who are struggling with similar things so we don’t feel alone.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Pause and come back to the breath. Notice what the breath is like in the current moment, with your current feeling. And if the current feeling isn’t how you want to be feeling, how can you change your breath to better support you? Taking an easy, deeper breath into the abdomen and an easy, longer breath out.

Episode 12 - Learn Something New with Mark Dawson
This week Tess & Sarah talk to Mark Dawson, a colleague of Sarah’s and a fellow therapist. One theme that runs through this whole episode is how learning new things can bring us happiness, even—or especially—in experiences that we don’t expect.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Happiness changes over time
Happiness is everyday experiences, connecting with your values, what you’re interested in and what brings you joy
Don’t wait for the jackpot moments, happiness is the journey
Grounding exercises: Noticing what’s happening in the here and now
Supportive routines and trying out new experiences can bring us happiness
Connecting with animals or a special pet can bring a lot of joy
Play is an aspect that, as adults, we often forget to bring into our day-to-day life but it’s very imperative that we do it for our mental and physical wellbeing.
It’s normal for your brain to be skeptical of new experiences, but introducing the emotional brain to new experiences, the anxiety towards those new experiences lessens.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Learn something new! If nothing else you’ll learn something about yourself which can often bring a sense of warmth and happiness.

Episode 8 - Nervous System Edit
This week Sarah & Tess talk about the nervous system, how it works to support you and what edits you can make in your daily life to encourage your nervous system to stay balanced and not overwhelm you.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Sympathetic Nervous System is the fight/fight/freeze part of your nervous system
Parasympathetic Nervous System is the calm/rest/digestion part of your nervous system
Tend and Befriend response is response to stress by coming together to seek connection, approach challenges as a community and tending to young ones or loved ones
Proprioceptive System is there to scan your surroundings to see if there is any danger
Your fight/flight response is a good thing, it’s your body loving you. The issue is when we get stuck in it
[10:10] Tess shares an exercise to mimic how the body holds stress and tension
[16:52] Our nervous system creates blueprints of experiences we have and these blueprints can affect the way we respond to future experiences
Noticing, pausing and observing can be a great way start to reframe those blueprints in a more supportive manner
[27:50] Vagus Nerve helps stimulate our calming response within our body. Watch Tess’ YouTube video to dive into it a little more: What Is The Vagus Nerve?
[32:30] Our breath is connected to our nervous system. Inhale is connected to the Sympathetic NS. Exhale is connected to the Parasympathetic.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Use humming breath (bee breath or Bhramari pranayama) to help soothe and calm the nervous system. Inhale through the nose, exhale and hum. Do this around 5 times in a row.

Episode 7 - Valuing Perspective and Autonomy with Marie-Anne McKee
This week Tess & Sarah talk to Marie-Anne McKee, psychotherapist, is a passionate champion for Autism and Neurodevelopmental needs and the co-founder of Space 2 Be You. There was a wonderful theme of valuing perspective and autonomy, which feeds the drive to make the best of things, throughout this episode with Marie-Anne.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Connecting with animals to support mental health and healing
Searching for a time when your real self vs your ideal self overlap (Carl Rogers Theory of Self)
Autonomy in life can bring happiness and contentment
Enjoy all moments, good and bad
Perspective helps to bring clarity and happiness
Even a fake smile can make you feel happy and release dopamine, the happy hormone
Bringing more awareness to the good things in life can reduce negative rumination
Growth feeds growth
We don’t need to be happy all the time. All emotions are valuable. Not all roads that look like they lead to happiness will lead to happiness, and that’s okay.
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Try putting on a fake smile in moments when you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed. You may notice how even if it starts out fake, happy hormones are released and it can actually help you down-regulate your fight/flight response and feel happier.

Episode 6 - Boundaries and Balance
This week Sarah & Tess discuss the difference between boundaries and barriers, what helps us create boundaries or distracts us from them and how we work to find balance in our life that brings us happiness.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Boundaries are very much about meeting yourself in the moment
Boundaries should be flexible and semi permeable
Barriers are roadblocks and impermeable
Our attachments and aversions can influence how we create boundaries or barriers
Being honest with yourself about your boundaries is important so you can then share them with others
We’re constantly learning what we need and what boundaries are important to us
Internal compassionate dialogue is imperative to creating supportive boundaries
We need to be respectful and mindful that others are also going through this journey of finding their own boundaries
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Take a moment each day this week to tune-in and notice what you need and how you can give back something little to yourself. Connect with a loved one to ask them to support you in your journey of creating supportive boundaries.

Episode 5 - Be in Awe of Where You Are with Amanda McKinney
This week Tess & Sarah talk to Amanda McKinney, business coach, author and podcast host of The Unapologetic Entrepreneur. The conversation had a lot of fun points, brussels sprouts even came up! But one of the common themes throughout the episode is the journey of getting to know yourself and being present to do the things that you love and give you happiness.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Finding a support system that we can share what is frustrating and celebrate our wins with either in day-to-day life or in business
Defining success for yourself can encompass happiness through questions like “When was the last time you felt abundant?”
Being truly present with what we’re doing or who we’re with brings happiness
Writing down what makes us happy and feel abundant can be a good way to increase that which does make us happy and reduce that which doesn’t. [Another good way to do this is through the Stress Bucket exercise Click here to download our Stress Bucket worksheet]
Discovering our Zone of Genius can increase our happiness
Recognizing when and where we need help can be tricky, but also very beneficial
“Be in awe of where you are, because you can never be at this point again.” - Why Not You? Amanda McKinney

Episode 4 - Can Nature Bring Us Happiness?
Can nature really bring us happiness? Sarah and Tess discuss why they believe nature can bring us true happiness and the ways they use nature to increase their own happiness, and the ways science has shown it to be incredibly beneficial to our overall mental health and wellbeing.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Enjoying nature, especially water and hiking in mountains and forests
Sarah’s going back to nature during and after COVID
Tess talks about how spending time in nature supported her when she was younger to release anxiety and find joy
According to the UK’s Mental Health Foundation 2021 study, 45% of UK adults said that connecting with nature has been very helpful in managing and supporting their mental health during the pandemic.
A 2019 UK study in Scientific Reports showed that people who spent 2 recreational hours in nature in a week reported greater health and wellbeing.
Having house plants can increase our happiness levels.
Sharing the connection with nature with others can be incredibly beneficial, as well
Spending time in nature doesn’t have to be a huge excursion, it could even just be 10 minutes a day going out into the garden or walking in a local park, or just noticing nature around you
Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, emerged in Japan in the 1980s (oops, Tess was a decade off!) , and is a way to support the population’s mental and physical wellbeing

Episode 3 - Meet the Husbands Part 2 with Conor Finnegan
One of the things that brings us both lots of joy and happiness is our families. So we thought we’d do a 2-part series called “Meet the Husbands” so you can gain a little more insight into our family life. In this episode we’ll continue with Conor Finnegan, Sarah’s husband and Tess’ brother-in-law.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Happiness can come from sharing experiences and reflecting on experiences you’re having at the moment.
Having kids can change our perception of happiness by helping us realize that it's the small things in life that can bring us joy.
Socializing and having a laugh with friends and family is a great way to bring happiness into our lives.
Helping people and giving back is an important aspect of creating happiness in our lives.
The importance of taking time to think about positive experiences and celebrate life, whether that’s during life or the loss of life.
“The craic”: Irish for having a good time.
Becoming successful isn’t an overnight thing, even if we sometimes think it is.
We all have to take action to bring happiness into our own lives, we can’t expect others to do it for us, nor can we force others to do something. As the saying goes “you can take a horse to the trough but you can’t make it drink.”
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Set a small target or benchmark that you can accessibly make, then when you get there celebrate what you’ve accomplished!

Episode 2 - Meet the Husbands Part 1 with Michael Flanagan
One of the things that brings us both lots of joy and happiness is our families. So we thought we’d do a 2-part series called “Meet the Husbands” so you can gain a little more insight into our family life. In this episode we’ll start with Michael Flanagan, Sarah’s brother and Tess’ husband.
Main points about what we discussed in this episode:
Happiness can mean lots of different things and is a spectrum: spending time with people, spending time in nature, being at ease, relaxing, doing things you love, etc.
Happiness changes over the course of our lives and that’s a good thing!
It’s important to take time for yourself, even if it’s just 5 minutes, even if you identify as an extroverted person. Our social bucket sometimes needs the tap to be opened.
Playing games and being silly can bring lots of happiness, no matter what your age.
Taking a step away from whatever is making you feel overwhelmed and bringing your focus fully onto something that brings you ease and support can be very beneficial to releasing tension and stress and clearing your senses.
Use mindfulness techniques like mental titration to remind yourself you are safe in the present moment to release pent up stress and anxiety
This week’s Happy Edit Tool: Find one small thing, small gesture, every day that you enjoy and brings you joy and go and do it.
