Dad Edition- Pregnancy/Newborn On The Homestead
Rarely do dads share what pregnancy and the newborn chapter mean for them. Arthur goes into logistical details and what was running through his mind while also tackling and managing the homestead.
We've been away for a few months so towards the end, we give some updates from the homestead like- do foxes stalk cats? are geese good hatchers? did we need another kitten?

Eggs Cost What!? Should You Or Should You Not Get Backyard Chickens?
We are finally breaching the all-too-common homesteading topic of backyard chickens, and there's a good reason why! Since 2020, soaring egg prices and shortages have continued to be a normal part of your average grocery store visit. Whether or not you should have backyard chickens has become a real question to any household that consumes a fair amount of eggs. We run through why or why not you may want chickens, how to raise and care for them, what they need, whether they are worth it, whether they could fit your lifestyle, and more!

What Makes a Homemaker?
Homemakers are always learning new techniques and skills and are always trying new things or maintaining old ones. There is absolutely no shame in homemaking. It is a life of service showing others how much they matter. Homemakers deeply love, wholeheartedly care, and graciously accept their role. They are productive, contributing members of their households, their families, and their comfort and happiness, are a homemaker's number one priority. Homemaker is one of the most honorary titles you can have. Anyone can live in and manage a house. Not everyone can make a house a home, so what makes a homemaker?

What To Look For In A Homestead-Sitter
It’s common knowledge that homesteading takes a lot of work. We’ve all chosen this life so we love said work. However, when you’re looking to go on vacation, finding others comfortable and willing to do our daily chores can be a difficult task. So, what attributes should you look for in a house/pet/livestock/poultry sitter?
As always, thank you for joining us! We're so glad you're here.

Homesteading with Neighbors
If you have close neighbors to your homestead, then you’ve probably heard some complaints… so have we. Luckily, we do also have some neighbors who love the homestead sights, sounds, and smells. You may not have as many direct neighbors as we do, but it is possible to have a homestead with neighbors close by, no matter the number.
We'd love to hear your stories! What do you do to keep the peace with your neighbors? What are your cringe-worthy neighbor encounters?

First Time Harvesting Chickens: What'd We Learn?
It was a hot topic in the last two seasons. Raising and harvesting your own meat birds is one of those things in homesteading that naturally seems to be a level-up. After getting comfortable raising our own veggies and fruits, of course, we wanted to try our hand at raising our own meat. This short and sweet podcast goes into what we learned as first-time chicken harvesters, how we then lost almost our entire meat supply, and what we'll do differently the next time. It even has a little special guest who pops in unexpectedly to give her opinions on raising your own meat! We hope you enjoy!

Homesteading: Business OR Hobby?
It's a good question. Should you make your homesteading venture a business or just let it be a part of your life without bringing any money in? There are a few things to consider before taking the plunge into a homesteading business, and it may not be for everyone. We talk boundaries we've implemented for our homesteading business, how and why we chose to approach it the way we do, and other important pros/cons to think about.

How To Respond When Someone Invites Themselves To Your Homestead
“Hey! I’ve heard you have [insert animal]. My [insert family member, friend, acquaintance] loves [said animal]! We’ll have to come by your house and see them.”
Uh, why? Do you know how caught off guard I am when someone says this to me? It’s usually at some social function and said by people we barely know or converse with. How are we even supposed to respond? You just invited yourself and guests to our house, uninvited. Can we now invite our family, friends, and ourselves to your house in return? Is this real life? It is on the homestead. We typically employ one of these tactics in response.

Income Properties: Short Term vs Long Term
What do income properties have to do with homesteading? As much or as little as you want! Agrotourism is a booming business right now, and maybe you have a little spot you could make a rental on your homestead or farm. Or maybe you'd like to build your passive income to fund your homesteading life with offsite properties. Income properties can be fantastic long-term tools to build wealth if done correctly. We talk about what we've learned about our long-term income property compared to our short-term property, the pros and cons of each, and how to design and set them up for success. It's a long one, but we unpackage all of the rental market's challenges, fun, and more so pause and take breaks if you need to! You won't want to miss a minute. Well... maybe the minute we talk about a nudist colony. But other than, that... As always, thank you for listening, and we hope you enjoy!

Why Do Southerners Say, Sir & Ma'am?
Yes ma’am. Yes sir. No ma’am. No sir. Ma’am? Sir? Children in the South are still taught these to this very day though it appears that it is starting to wane. Is it offensive or a sign of respect? So, why do Southerners say Sir & Ma'am? We dive into why we use these terms, why we are teaching our child to say them, and whether or not we think they are relevant to today's world.

Finding the Perfect Homesteading Property
You can "homestead" from anywhere, but some things, like animals or an expansive garden, do require a little more land space. What are you looking for? What's your plan? What are your goals? What's your budget?
No matter what your homesteading goals are, the steps to searching for the perfect property are pretty much the same across the board. We talk about this and how to achieve your homesteading dreams even if the property isn't "perfect" to begin with.

Just Start. & Go. + A Couple Announcements
Sometimes, the fear of the unknown or a lack of confidence, or even poor time management can prevent us from just starting something. Even then, once you start, see it through and "go"! No matter what you're on the cusp of, the time is going to pass anyway. You might as well begin a task, a creative outlet, a book, a project, etc., and fill that time with something productive.
In this episode, we give some tangible ideas to start and go on, share a couple of announcements, and present a personal challenge that anyone can participate in!

Homesteading With No Experience
Just because you didn't grow up on a homestead or have never worked on a farm doesn't mean that you aren't capable or ready to start homesteading. Like anything, if you're willing to put forth the effort of learning and embracing the work it takes to homestead, you can absolutely be a successful homesteader!
In this episode, we talk about our gateways into homesteading (hint: it wasn't chickens for us!), how to baby step or dive right in depending on how you yourself work, and getting the courage to embrace and connect with this way of life.

Dealing with Death on the Homestead
With the ever-exciting life and chaos on a homestead also comes having to deal with death. This was a hard one for us... As much as we all want them to live forever, animals come to an end, and often, our choices can affect that chapter and how it closes. We share our grief and what we've learned from having to make end-of-life decisions for our animals in the past and present. It's not a fun topic (that's for sure!), but it's one we all have to face at some point if we choose this way of life, a life full of the joys animals bring to our everyday.
Check out our video podcast on YouTube or Rumble to see basically every video I have of our beloved animals who are no longer with us, and make sure to stay to the end (or fast forward) to see Pendleton's goodbye.
And as always, thank you for listening, but especially thank you for getting through this one with us. It's such a sad, emotional thing to talk about and it was a struggle to get through it, but our hope, through this podcast, is that we can be stewards for the homesteading life and all its ups and downs. Thank you.

The Doleful Tale of the Unicorn Chicken
Buying local when it comes to food is always a good idea, but it's even better from a reputable farmer.
