Interview 14: Muslim Mental Health During Ramadan, with Maliha Khan, LPC
In this insightful interview by psychiatrist Dr Sulman Aziz Mirza with therapist Maliha Khan, LPC, we delve into the topic of mental health during Ramadan, exploring common misconceptions, anxieties, and considerations. Fasting in Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it's also about controlling our Nafs (inner desires) and seeking closeness to Allah. We discuss the reasons why some Muslims may feel anxious about Ramadan, including the pressure of rigidity and absolutism in fasting practices. Drawing from the Seerah (life of the Prophet Muhammad), we highlight the importance of normalizing anxiety as a human experience and finding balance between faith and mental health. We also shed light on the concept of Niyat (intention) in Islam and how it relates to rigidity, burnout, and shame. Additionally, we explore exemptions and contraindications for fasting, as well as the importance of seeking professional help when needed. We tackle the stigma around mental health in the Muslim community and discuss ways to break it, including healthy conversations, education, and support groups. We also emphasize the role of families, communities, faith leaders, and mental health professionals in supporting the mental health of Muslims during Ramadan and beyond.
