Don't grab a blind person:
It’s a rare day when I walk more than a block from my house that some well-meaning person doesn’t grab me. It happens to blind people all the time. Sometimes, it’s even worse.
They have no way of knowing how the people they grab may react.
A friend of mine said that her former husband was standing at an intersection in New Zealand when two big men did the exact same thing. He was stationed in front of a prison he had just visited in his role as a parole officer. You can imagine how scary that was for him, too.
Jim Stokes, PhD is a blind psychologist, and he says he has been grabbed as well.
Jim Stokes bite “I have been grabbed often,” Jim says, “a good way to disengage from someone who grabs you is to face your hand palm- down and pull it to your side.”
He also says you are usually better off being diplomatic instead of aggressive.
Jim says, “if you would like their assistance, ask if you can hold their arm by the elbow and walk a half step behind them.”
“I was at a big bus stop in Denver, when two drunks were arguing over what bus I was supposed to take. One of them even flagged down a bus, and pushed me on.”
What you do if the person who decides to help you is drunk, high, or mentally ill?
Or if you are sighted, the person you would like to help could also be drunk, high, or mentally ill. Unless it is a real emergency, just ask before touching someone.
Coronavirus tips for blind and visually impaired:
Everyone has to use good judgment to reduce his or her odds of catching the Corona Virus. There are some extra steps those of us who are blind and visually impaired can do to reduce our chances of becoming a statistic.
Doctor Richa Davidson is a Professor and vice chair for quality and clinical affairs at the University of Colorado School of ophthalmology.
First, Doctor Davidson says that is okay to touch your face with the proper precautions:
Dr. Richard: "But in our case, we have to wash more than just our hands."
Since we are, being warned against touching people I asked Doctor Davidson if it would be safer if our sighted guides wore long-sleeved shirts since we hold onto guide’s arms.
Since the best way for a sighted person to guide us is to have us hold them by the back of one of their arms, walking a half step behind them. Instead of looking straight ahead or at the person guiding us, it is best to look away from them to the side.
Finally, plan ahead to avoid infected areas. If you find yourself in one, keep in touch with your hotel’s desk clerks, concierge and bell persons to see if there are new places you shouldn’t go.

The Tactile Traveler #4 - Charles Bennet Syndrome, Guiding the Blind, Restaurant Tips, Using White-Canes, and the California Zephyr
Episode 4 of The Tactile Traveler includes more useful advice for navigating the world as a blind or visually-impaired person with stories about the discovery of Charles Bennet syndrome, how-to guide a blind person, tips for eating at restaurants, using white-canes on cobblestone streets, and riding the California Zephyr.

Tactile Traveler #2 - The Braille Trail, National Federation of the Blind Convention, Surviving Typhoons in the Philippines
In this episode we will walk down a picturesque mountain trail designed to be experienced instead of viewed, join the largest number of blind people to ever be in one place at one time, and experience Typhoon damage in the Philippines.
All of us on the show are volunteers, and since we all live in Colorado many of our early stories are from Colorado. And since all our stories will be reported from the prospective of blind people, and there are very few blind reporters, we will be giving blind people the opportunity to become reporters.
