The Texas Trailhead : A Texas Hiking Podcast Oct 02, 2020

S5 E4 Fairfield Lake State Park Announces Closure & Kammok Swiflet
After years of speculation, Fairfield Lake SP officially announces its closure. Listen to learn more about the circumstances behind the closure, and the official press release from Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
In the second segment, I'm talking to you about the Kammok Swiflet. Easy to set up, lightweight, and durable. This hammock stand is perfect for your next adventure where you don't have trees, or you're not allowed to hang anything on them.

S5 E3 Sharing 1st hike for 2023 and Birding in the Rio Grande Valley
Hey friends! In this episode, I'll be reviewing a bit late, what we did for first-day hikes and the program itself. Got to start the year with a hike on the beach at Mustang Island state park in Port Aransas, Texas!
In the second half of the episode, I'll explore the Rio Grande Valley and the three state parks in south Texas that are part of the World Birding Center.
Thanks for listening! If you enjoy what you hear, please consider subscribing to the podcast and contributing to keeping it going!

S5 E2. Dinosaur Valley State Park & Ignik Firecan
I took a three day camping trip and made it to a handful of different state parks on my way home that included Meridian State Park, Cleburne State Park and Dino Valley State Park.
While I was just at Dino Valley for the day I was able to get in some great sights, stick my feet in the water, and even see dinosaur tracks!
---
Texas was really dry this summer so a lot of parks around the state had burn bans in effect. Ignik sent me their Firecan for review, and I found it's a wonderful alternative to natural fires. They even make great things to have in the cold months as well.

Sea to Summit Gear for your next camping trip
I'm going to talk about three items from Sea to Summit you should take on your next camping adventure. These items are perfect for backpacking, but even for car camping if you want to save a little more space. Perfect as a set or split the two pots up, the Sea to Summit cookware pieces are easy to use, durable, and just work... after a little elbow grease on the handle. The silicon cup is perfect for storing in your backpack and is perfect for drinking something other than water like a powdered drink or soup.

Video: Yeti Yonder
This is a subscirber-only version of the Yeti Yonder podcast that was turned into a video now available on Youtube. It has a higher production quality than the typical episodes. Hope you enjoy!

S5 E1.5 Day trip to Meridian State Park // Yeti yonder water bottle first impressions

S5 E1. Season five. Meridian State Park day trip and will the new Yeti bottle compete w/Nalgene?

Back into the groove before 2022 is over.

S4 E11: Hiking News & Big Bend if You Only Have a Day
The weekly recap of outdoor news is a fun email blast I sent out, but recently the Texas Parks & Wildlife dept. sent out some information on small towns that have received grants for outdoor spaces! See if one of your towns made the list.
Think you need to dedicate a week to Big Bend? Well, not quite. You can definitely see a good amount of the national park in one day. If you accidentally have an opportunity to visit Big Bend, here are some places I definitely recommend you checking out on your way to Terlingua or Marfa.

S4 E10: Monahans Sandhills State Park
Howdy fellow Trailheads!
You know that movie Dune? I got to visit Texas's version out west at Monahans Sandhills state park. Come along on this adventure and learn about how the park was for me and what you can expect on your next state park trip.
Along the way, I made a stop at Happy Trails Outfitters in San Angelo. A great outdoor-themed store that has plenty of great apparel, but hiking gear and accessories as well. They also carry the Texas State Park Passport.
If you'd like to read a full recap on this visit you can do so at this link: https://www.thetexastrailhead.com/monahans-sandhills-state-park/

I take a visit to Lockhart State Park: Video Narration
Anchor has created a new way to bring audio from videos to the podcast. Let's see how this works!
This was from a trip to Lockhart State Park in 2021 where I explored some new trails. You can read about this trip, or watch the full video on Youtube.
Just a note, there are some scenes from this video that don't have any audio when I was just showing images, so keep that in mind if you hear any gaps.

S4 E8: Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center & Seminole Canyon SP
There are two places that I really enjoyed: The Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center just outside of Fort Davis, and south of there at Seminole Canyon State Park.
Learn about what to expect at this two amazing destinations.

S4E7 Talking Nature Photography y mas with my buddy Enola
Enola’s photos caught my eye one day because the imagery was different than anything else on my feed, but it was her words that were attached to the photo that made me follow along.
The words and the pictures were tinted with emotion that was relatable, and reflected a person who was wanting to see beyond the glitter of life, and delve deeper into her own self.
This interview was recorded a little over a year ago. Before she left for a road trip of self discovery, so it’s fun to look back and talk about her trip in anticipation.

S4 E6: Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome back to another episode of the Texas Trailhead podcast!
In this episode, I venture out to Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. This is one of 21 national refuges in Texas and it is located just outside of Austin, TX.
It's a fantastic place to hike and do some birdwatching, I really hope you can make a trip out!

S4E5: Where did season 4 go & Stephen F. Austin State Park
In this episode I'm getting things back on track by letting y'all know what I've been up to. This episode was originally recorded May 21, so it may feel a bit delayed, but the sentiment is still the same. There's a lot going on in regard to growing Texas Trailhead, and when it's a one-person show, some things get shuffled around.
I went to Stephen F. Austin state park before heading out on my epic west Texas adventure, so listen to a breakdown of what you can expect visiting this state park just outside of Houston, TX.
Enjoy!

S4 E4 Introducing Texas Trail Company & Back to Government Canyon SNA
Welcome back to another episode of the Texas Trailhead Podcast! This week I’m giving a pretty big update to the TXTH brand, and introducing y’all to the Texas Trail Company store. Here you’ll find amazing gear to hike in that performs as hard as you do on the trail, or whenever you want to be comfortable. Find amazing tees, hats, home goods and more.
I’m also back to a favorite San Antonio state natural area. Government Canyon is a place I’ve been to before, but on this visit I hiked some new trails, and had a newly found appreciation for these parks. It also helped that since my first visit I’ve learned more about how this park came to be, so that was a plus as well.

S4 E3: A conversation with Kammok founder, Greg McEvilly
This week I'm speaking with Grey McEvilly, founder of Kammok out of Austin, TX. While hammocks put them on the map, they are responsible for making some of the best outdoor gear on the market that focuses on three core pillars: Adventure-Community-Love. We'll discuss the beginnings of the company, and current initiatives they have in place for being a responsible company for the environment, and the outdoors.
This week is also special for Kammok because March 27th, 2021 is the 2nd annual National Camp at Home Day! This is a really fun way to get people to enjoy the outdoors without leaving the house, and there are a ton of fun ways you can interact with fellow fans of the outdoor spaces. Learn how you can participate here: https://kammok.com/pages/national-camp-at-home-day

S4 E2: South Llano River SP and the Texas State Parks set to reopen
#texashiking #texasstateparks #southllanosp I was really excited to check out a new Texas State Park, and South Llano River state park did not disappoint. I was able to knock how the trails I wanted to get to including: Overlook Trail (.7 mi), Fawn Trail (1.0 mi), East Ridge trail, Walter's Way (.6 mi), and the Mid-Canyon Trail (2.3 mi). There were also some points of interest I'm just going to have to revisit on another trip.

S3 E13: Big Announcement & The San Antonio Mission Trails
This week I have a big merch announcement! Make sure you visit the site and check out some new goodies in the store.
I'm also doing a quick visit recap from my time at the San Antonio missions.
The mission trail is really just the mission system as a whole. There are five missions you can visit, but there are also some additional interesting landmarks in the area as well.
Now to be clear, there is an actual Mission Hike & Bike Trail, but I'm just talking about the 'trail' in terms of the grouping as a whole.
Enjoy!

S3 E10: Westcave Discovery Center CEO and Executive Director Trevor Hance
This week I'm speaking with Westcave Discovery Center CEO and Executive Director Trevor Hance.
Westcave is a remarkable outdoor space that is photogenic yes, but also holds a deep responsibility of promoting the positive effects of conservation, and getting children outside.
In our conversation we will discuss why the preserve is so special, but also take a deeper dive into what programs are available for kids when they visit, and what the center offers educationally.
I also hurt my foot. No bueno. You can hear me pout about that as well.
Enjoy!

S3 E7: GeoTagging Chat with Matthew Guthrie, Creator of @HikeAustin

S3 E6: Nikole Velasco of Nikole Velasco Photography
This week I’m speaking with Nikole Velasco.
She’s an elopement photographer whose focus is getting amazing photos of couples in the outdoors.
Recently she has received the Leave No Trace photography certification, so she can spread awareness about the Leave No Trace Principles.
She’s had a passion for the outdoors for many years, and taking pictures of that has always been a part of that. It wasn’t until she started the elopement photography did that additional sense of adventure grow.
Nikole understands the responsibility of not only the couples she's photographing, but also the locations she’s shooting in and what expectations must be set to not harm the natural spaces that the photo session is in.
The leave no trace course teaches photographers to be more responsible in the outdoors, and sets examples of how to speak with clients about certain shots and how to protect themselves and of the natural environment.
She will give some examples of things couples should be mindful of in the outdoors, and will share her thoughts on what steps professional photographers have with the natural spaces, taking people into those spaces, and then deciding whether or not to share those spaces with others.
You can find more about her photography on her Instagram and her website. @Nikolevelascophoto is her Instagram handle and her website.
Reach her on her website here: https://www.nikolevelascophoto.com/

S3 E3 Dr. Sonia Lucas shares some Physical Therapy tips to prepare for the outdoors.
This week I'm speaking with Dr. Sonia Lucas PT, DPT.
Originally from Oklahoma City, she's now living in Austin, Texas, and now her mission is to 'get more people out and active in nature".
Her love for the outdoors started at an early age, and her passion now transcends to the trails, roads and lakes around Austin. She is really focused on that relationship between you and nature, and that's such a huge part of her work.
Dr Lucas states in her bio, "When I began my transition into the world of physical therapy, I saw other physical therapists helping people to get out of pain and move better. I was inspired to do the same and do it in a way that celebrated the outdoors and healthy living".
In our discussion I wanted to know a little bit more on how to prepare for different lengths of hikes, and other activities we can do to get our bodies ready for hitting the trail.
She also gave some great tips on footwear, and a few simple exercises to get our bodies warmed up.
If you'd like to learn more about what she does, give her a visit at her website: Active ATX Rehab & Wellness. https://www.activeatxrehab.com/
You can also find out more information on her Facebook page by the same name. Click this link: https://www.facebook.com/activeatxrehab
For all of you listeners, she has three FREE e-books available to download. You can learn about proper footwear, 10 tips to tackle pain, and 5 exercises to prepare for any hike. Click the link above to see those as well.
Please enjoy this week's episode.

S3 E2: The break and LCRA Park- Matagorda Bay Nature Park
But I think taking breaks is important. This podcast had been running pretty consistently since the end of December 2019, and when I was wrapping up season two I was feeling a bit uninspired. There was nothing dramatic going on at the time, and I wasn't really hiking as much because of the reservation system.
I felt that taking a bit of a breather in between seasons, which are not based on anything besides feeling 15 is a good number, so I could regroup and collect some more thoughts and ideas about what I wanted to talk about.
So during that time I talked to a handful of people who you'll be hearing from, either already in the first episode or upcoming. I got to visit a few places near the coast. One of which you'll hear about in this episode.
The LCRA parks are typically near the Colorado river, and the Matagorda Bay Nature Park just happens to be located at the end of the river. The parking lot is just next to where it meets the Gulf of Mexico.
This environment is home to some amazing birding, fishing, and camping, so give it a listen and I hope it inspires you to get out and check it out!

S3. E1. Dr Wetegrove talks about the importance of Nature for Mental Health
Welcome back to The Texas Trailhead podcast! September is suicide prevention month, so I figured I would begin this season with a discussion about mental health.
According to the American foundation for suicide prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the united states.
In 2018 over 48 thousand people died by suicide.
In 2020 the rates should see continued increase as it has been on a constant rise since 1999.
This week I’m speaking with Dr Wetegrove, a licensed psychologist based out of the San Antonio area.
One of her main areas of focus is working with people in the outdoors and uses nature to work on mental health.
In our discussion we definitely talk about her practice, but I wanted to know more about mental health in general, who’s affected the most, what we can do to normalize the discussion surrounding it, and some best practices we can do at home.
Mental health is really important to me and it’s something I have to focus on daily. Nature was one of the main things I found that helped me, so I definitely feel that the discussion around mental health is important, but what’s also important is making it easier to talk about it and make it more accessible.
We’ll get into more detail during the interview, but it’s important to note, especially in our current climate that access to mental health providers AND the outdoors should be accessible to everyone. This isn’t a political statement.
So when I say, or when we see companies posting things like “the outdoors are for everyone” no one should be mad at that, or saying things like ‘of course they are’. But realize that in some instances it’s the access that isn’t made available.
Not everyone has the same access to parks, trails, and outdoor spaces. Just like not everyone has access to mental health services.
Dr. Wetegrove talks about some of the difficulties for people of color and lower financial backgrounds including the access to mental health care. We’ll also discuss when to start to talking to children and he work with women in the outdoors.
And since we’ll be discussing the positive effects of the outdoors, it’s important to note that making health care, and the outdoors more accessible for all will help more people in the long run.
So please enjoy this episode.
And one quick note, I realized after recording I had some microphone issues that you may hear later in the episode. I apologize in advance, and I hope it doesn’t distract from the message.

The Texas Trailhead Podcast S2 E15: Hiking in the Texas Heat and Hydration Tips
Welcome to episode 15! In this episode I'll be talking about the obvious: It's hot in Texas. Do you know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke? I'll cover what to look out for, and I'll give you some of my favorite ways to stay hydrated out on the trail.
This is also episode 15 of the second season, and therefore it's the last episode of the season! I'm going to take a bit of a breather before season three because I really want to focus on the storytelling of my friends, and anyone out there that wants to share their story.
If you or someone you know has a great outdoor story, an outdoor organization, or campaign send them my way! I'd love to hear about what they have to say. It doesn't even need to be Texas.

Happy Memorial Day weekend! My thoughts are with everyone that has been lost in battle, so make sure you all take time to send your regards.
This week is a bit of a shorty.
I'll be talking about a Hot Topic that came up this week in the hiking message boards. The Narrows are outside of Wimberley, TX , and while quite magical to look at, require visitors to walk on river bottom to avoid people's private property. The issue is- not everyone is following the rules.
The second segment is a quick overview of one of my favorite state parks: Palmetto State Park.

The Texas Trailhead Podcast S2 E5: The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance & Astral TR1 Mesh Shoe Review
Welcome to another episode of the texas trailhead podcast!
I hope everyone is having a great week.
Just wanted to let you all know that if you’re listening to this on its release day, so may 1st, It’s my birthday!
And I hate to beg, but for my birthday I’d love if you could do something to show your support and if you could share this podcast with someone who you think may enjoy it! That would be great— and If you listen to me on Apple, leaving a 5-star review would help tremendously-
Ok— This week I don’t have an interview, but I do have some goodies to share with you. I love goodies, so I hope you do to. Because I live in central texas I’m in San Marcos quite a bit and they are home to one of my favorite trails systems, the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance. They’re a non profit group of amazing, hard working individuals that maintain one of my favorite day hike. There are three total nature parks, but the one I’m talking about on this episode is Purgatory Creek Nature Trail. I love it so much, and I almost don’t want to tell y’all about it, so if you visit please leave it they way you found it or better, or I’ll come find you and make nasty faces.
In my second segment I’m doing a little follow up review for a pair of shoes I haven’t reviewed before. I just waited about 4ish months to talk about them because I definitely have a different opinion about them today than I did when I first bought them.
It’s my review of the Astral TR1 Mesh trail runner shoes. I’ll also be featuring the review on an upcoming YouTube video, so if go look for the texas trailhead on YouTube and make sure you like and subscribe. I’ll leave a link in the description—
So let’s get to it!

The Texas Trailhead Podcast Season 2 Episode 1: Urban Hiking & The Coleman Two-Burner Stove
Welcome to the 2nd season of The Texas Trailhead podcast! I’m very excited about the episodes made so far, and looking forward to keeping them going as long as y’all are listening! I’d love to talk to y’all about the trails too. If you download the Anchor app we can just chat on the phone about our favorite hobby.
This episode is gonna be a shorty. I just wanted to share my story of hiking with the kiddo around the neighborhood and how much fun it was. I went off on a tangent a little bit, but I just wanted to encourage people to spend time outside, but maybe a little closer to home.
In the second half I’m gonna give a gear recommendation for one of my favorite items to use while car camping. The Coleman two-burner stove. It’s a classic, and it’s a beast. And if you somehow don’t know about it I’m going to talk about how easy it is to set up.

The Texas Trailhead Podcast Episode 15 : Coastal Road Trip and Solomon Trail Runner Review
The Texas Trailhead Episode 15 : Coastal Road Trip and Solomon Trail Runner Review
For this weeks episode my daughter and I decided to go on a little coastal road trip. Shelter in place orders had yet to be administered and at the time my wife still had to work at the office, and the store I worked at was closed.
The idea was to go visit lake Corpus Christi state park and then kinda just explore from there. What it turned out to be was a fun coastal adventure.
I’m also going to talk about my new trail running shoes, so stay tuned!
