What do you do when you get feedback for your book that might have bigger implications when you address them? That’s what this in depth conversation with Lisa Roe covers. During our chat, Lisa shared ways to develop stronger characters and how to handle structural changes to your book. She likened the process to smoothing out a bedsheet to get all the wrinkles out, and the way she moved between her writing process and her metaphor was brilliant. Because in the end, you want to make sure that any changes you do are worked out entirely, so that the reader gets the best experience with your book.

Lisa Roe graduated from the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and spent many years as an advertising creative director and copywriter in New York City until she accepted the tougher job of stay-at-home mom and turned to writing fiction — mostly to entertain her kids, but then to tell her own stories. A classic first born, reluctant empty nester, Dr. Doolittle wannabe, and the author of Welcome to the Neighborhood, Lisa lives in New Jersey with her husband and three incorrigible dogs.

Narrating your own audiobook with Wayne Applewhite

Narrating your own audiobook with Wayne Applewhite

Welcome back Wayne Applewhite to The TufFish Show, a place to help writers and aspiring authors get out of their own way to leave a legacy by telling the stories they want to share through writing their own books and confidently sharing them with others. The writing process can be tough and the business side can feel scary, but TufFish makes both feel smoother and achievable. Visit https://www.jennifermilius.com/tuffish to learn more.

This fun conversation with my co-author and friend, Wayne Applewhite, is a wonderful way to celebrate the release of our audiobook! We narrated our book, You Know it’s a Verb, Right?, and it was a wonderful experience for us. In this chat, we talked about what it was like to narrate our book, how we planned and prepped, and how the imperfect recordings were handled for a seamless and engaging experience for our listeners.

Wayne Applewhite is a lifelong learner. His leadership practices started in high school as he witnessed firsthand that leadership was something more than what met the naked eye. Using his curious and ever asking observational notions, Wayne knew early on that leadership was more - much more - than being in charge by title only.

Wayne was co-founder of a leadership development firm, Just Leadership, LLC, and holds a Doctor of Management degree.  He has an eclectic experience base that he brings to the community and to the nation at large.  Wayne has over thirty-five years of diverse and challenging leadership experiences, coupled with a solid foundation of continuing education. He has held challenging positions such as Associate Professor (Boston University), Director of Graduate Military Programs (Boston University, Metropolitan College), Associate Dean, Instructor, Lecturer, Adjunct Professor, Outside Director, Thought Leader, Non-commissioned Officer in Charge, Officer in Charge, Commander, and COO. In each of those leadership positions, Wayne continued to build his leadership skillset as he also pursued formal and informal education.

Most recently, he is the co-host of 27 Minutes with Sheila and Wayne!, a podcast focused on providing tips on being a better "you" while at work, play or life with a mission to change the world “One verb at a time!”  Wayne’s latest book, You Know it’s a Verb, Right?, co-authored with Jennifer Milius, is about leadership.

However, if you ask him, his greatest joy and accomplishment, is being a husband and a dad

This fun conversation with Elena Paige demonstrates the power of transformation a  book can have. Writing a book can be an intuitive process for many authors and feel like digging into more layers, so Elena shares how this happens for her. Whether it's the characters, the reader, or the author, Elena shares how transformation is possible for each in a fictional book.

Elena Paige is a middle-grade author with a background in counseling psychology. She loves creating stories which inspire and transform young readers - either through empowering them, entertaining them, or encouraging them to be more creative and imaginative.

Her books, while being filled with magic and wonder, have real life characters with real life issues - like fitting in, trusting yourself, dealing with inner conflict and more!

Her greatest value in life is CREATIVITY - nurturing it, enhancing it and using it! She loves encouraging children to believe in themselves and accept their own way of creating, even if it's outside the box. The most amazing creatives of our time rarely fitted in!

Her absolute favorite book as a child was No Flying in the House. She always knew magic was real, but when all attempts to bring her favorite teddy to life failed, she adopted a dog instead. Her Moodle dog, named Lucky, is always by her side when she writes. On Sunday mornings you can find her hiding under her bed covers reading, while her children are wondering where their favorite book has disappeared.

Solo episode - Insights from a podcast host

Get a cup of your favorite drink and raise it to celebrate with host Jen Milius as this week is the 100th episode of The TufFish Show, which feature authors from different genres and businesses, but they all have one thing in common – they had a message or story they wanted to tell and courageously got out of their own way and made it happen. This show will inspire you to do the same because when you hear someone else’s story, you get the guidance and encouragement to keep going and get your book out in the world, too.
It has been such an incredible journey so far, so it felt like a solo episode would be the perfect way to celebrate this first of many big milestones!
As much as Jen loves interviewing her guests, this solo episode was also fun to create because it was a different way to give back and share why she's so passionate about this community and this show.
During this episode, you'll also hear a little behind the scenes, get tips for how to be a guest on a podcast, and get a pep talk to encourage you to keep going.
Jen is a big believer that if you have a story or book that’s in your heart to write, then there’s someone else out there who needs to read it. And once that book is published, you have to keep going and put yourself out there to share it.

She also shares some wonderful tips on building your author presence, especially before the book is published.

Growing up, Cassie Sanchez always wanted superpowers and to be a warrior princess fighting alongside unlikely heroes. Suffice it to say, she lost herself in books, from fantasy to sci-fi to a suspenseful romance. Currently, Cassie lives in the southwest with her husband, Louie, while pestering her two adult men-children. She can usually be found drinking too much coffee while working in her office with her dogs, Gunner and Bullet, warming her feet. When she isn’t writing about magic and sword fights, she enjoys golf, spending time with friends, or partaking in a satisfying nap.

One of the big themes I've heard as a podcast host and developmental editor is dealing with blocks. Whether it's a closed door or overcoming imposter syndrome to find and use your voice, so you can trust yourself to align to your purpose and write the story you want - or need - to tell. And this powerful conversation with Meg tackles this very theme. Meg shares how she leveraged her legal background as the transitions her career and life have taken to help her write, not one, not two, but three books, and one of which is her memoir. If you are feeling blocked along your writing/author journey, then be sure to listen to what Meg offers in this episode.

Meg Nocero, is an attorney, TEDx inspirational speaker, a certified happiness coach, and award-winning author of three books: The Magical Guide to Bliss, Sparkle & Shine, and Butterfly Awakens: A Memoir of Transformation Through Grief. Meg appeared on stage in Miami with Oprah, on CNN Español, and BookCon live. Who am I to write this book with Mary Ann Tippett

Welcome Mary Ann Tippett to The TufFish Show, a place to help writers and aspiring authors get out of their own way to leave a legacy by telling the stories they want to share through writing their own books and confidently sharing them with others. The writing process can be tough and the business side can feel scary, but TufFish makes both feel smoother and achievable. Visit https://www.jennifermilius.com/tuffish to learn more.

Mary Ann shared so many nuggets during this powerful conversation about overcoming "Who am I" as so many authors face when following their hearts as they write their first, next or current book. We also talked about the power of focus and to use it to help you go from a blank page to a first draft.

Mary Ann Tippett writes uplifting fiction from her home in Ottawa. She has a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Indiana University. After writing and publishing novels she wrote in 3 days, such as Clara & Pig, Finding Clara, and Pairs With Pinot, she published her first non-fiction guide on writing, How To Write A Novel In 3 Days: The Zone Method.
