This is an introductory talk to the book of Acts as we will be spending January and February of 2022 looking at Acts each Sunday.  We live in the "year of the Lord", and all that we are, and all that we have, is his.   Three big themes will be apparent, and Will talks about them here:   1) The mission  in Acts is the forming of a new community around the worship of life and God.   2) This mission is conducted not in human power, but in the power of the Holy Spirit.   3) God gets it done. This talk is taken from the sixth and final zoom meeting of our Lent Course on March 31st, 2021. He strengthens us with a reminder of the certainty of God's love for us in Jesus.   The video, including all the visuals, can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/YdHFmYbXj2I The handouts and visuals are available here:  http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/6b-Wednesday-6-Romans-8-Handout-Slides.pdf The discussion questions that were used in breakout rooms during this session are: http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/6b-Wednesday-6-Romans-8-Discussion-Questions.pdf For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? Roaming Through Romans - Sunday 6 (Romans 8:18-30, Life in the Spirit - Groaning and Glory)

On the last Sunday in our Roaming through Romans series in Lent we come to Romans 8. Paul is writing to encourage his friends in the real world. All that has gone before in his letter is to deepen their understanding so that they can trust in the presence of God's Spirit in the midst of their world, and live in the depths of that truth.  We have the Spirit of God in a creation that groans.  In this talk Will Briggs gives a brief overview of Romans 8 and Gill Briggs applies it from her experience of groaning in suffering.   Recorded live during our livestream on March 28th, 2021.   Talk available as video here: https://youtu.be/BDHC3YYANOA For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? This video is taken from the fifth zoom meeting of our Lent Course on March 24th, 2021. We revisit the gospel that Paul expounds, and explore how we engage with it, and some thoughts about what we actually mean by "sin."  We then turn to Romans 7 where Paul speaks of the power of sin being reinforced by the truth of God's good law; and the joy of being freed from that bond through the cross of Christ.   This talk is available as a video here: https://youtu.be/Dh3bwZ9hlIs In the talk Will refers to a blog post about sin, you can read that here: http://briggs.id.au/jour/2015/04/sin/ The handouts and visuals are available here:  http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/5b-Wednesday-5-Romans-7-The-Power-of-Sin.pdf The discussion questions that were used in breakout rooms during this session are: http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/5b-Wednesday-5-Romans-7-The-Power-of-Sin-Discussion-Questions.pdf For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? Roaming Through Romans - Wednesday 4 (Romans 6, Grace and sin and applied eschatology)

This video is taken from the fourth zoom meeting of our Lent Course on March 17th, 2021. In this we go into the "last lap" of our journey into Romans 1-8 as we arrive at chapter 6. Paul poses a question about whether God's grace allows us to keep on sinning. This is a doorway question into some fundamental aspects of our discipleship with Jesus. Paul answers the question by looking at how, in the gospel, we have been rescued, and made a new people in Christ, belonging to eternity.   This talk is also available as a video (with all the visuals etc.) on youtube at https://youtu.be/3FmrrE4ALKM The handouts and visuals are available here:  http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/4b-Wednesday-4-Romans-6-Applied-Eschatology.pdf The discussion questions that were used in breakout rooms during this session are: http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/4b-Wednesday-4-Romans-6-Applied-Eschatology-Discussion-Questions.pdf For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? Roaming Through Romans - Sunday 4 (Romans 6:1-14, You are free, you are His)

Our Lent series into Romans brings us to Romans 6. Here Paul begins to explore questions that will help his hearers grasp the gospel for their everyday lives. The gospel is not academic. As he talks about the freedom we have, and alludes to the story of the Exodus, we are exhorted to  live in that freedom, and not in cheap grace.   Recorded live during our livestream on March 14th, 2021.   Also available as a video here: https://youtu.be/5vXgcRUZ_E4 For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? Roaming Through Romans - Wednesday 3 (Romans 4-5, The size & power of God's blessing through faith)

Roaming Through Romans - Wednesday 3 (Romans 4-5, The size & power of God's blessing through faith)

This audio is taken from the third zoom meeting of our Lent Course on March 10th, 2021. In this session we recapped the previous weeks, and then looked at Romans 4-5. Paul appeals to the story of Abraham, to demonstrate how the God's blessing can only flow fully through faith, not as an earned reward. He then contrasts Jesus to Adam, showing how the gift that flows through Jesus exceeds the power of whatever sin came before. Jesus is a like a second Adam, a new humanity, into which, by faith, we are included.   Video available here: https://youtu.be/NBfrzr5Qdnk The handouts and visuals are available here:  http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/3b-Wednesday-3-Romans-4-5.pdf The discussion questions that were used in breakout rooms during this session are: http://www.thevinesheffield.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/3b-Wednesday-3-Romans-4-5-Discussion-questions.pdf For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? Roaming Through Romans - Sunday 3 (Romans 4:13-5:5, Living into the long story)

Roaming Through Romans - Sunday 3 (Romans 4:13-5:5, Living into the long story)

As we continue our Lent series into the book of Romans, we arrive at chapter 4. Here Paul begins to illustrate, demonstrate, and celebrate the way in which the gospel is made real in the lives of his people. The story of righteousness by faith is not some second-chapter afterthought, it integral to the family history of all of God's people, including ourselves. Will encourages to consider Abraham's example, to allow the current difficulties to challenge the story we tell ourselves, and so find how God's truth in Jesus defines our lives and our church.   Also available on youtube at https://youtu.be/EnHAea2KIgk Recorded live during our livestream on March 7th, 2021.   For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021 Any questions? Roaming Through Romans - Sunday 1 (Romans 1:14-25, God's desire for union and re-union)

Roaming Through Romans - Sunday 1 (Romans 1:14-25, God's desire for union and re-union)

On the first Sunday in Lent we encounter the passion of God in Romans 1, and Paul's passion for the gospel. God's righteousness is a "covenant rightness" reflecting his desire for union with his creation, and the gospel is a gospel of re-union with him. God's anger and anguish aligns with the breakdown of that union, is revealed in his invitation to be reunited with him in and through Jesus.   Recorded live during our livestream on Feb 21st, 2021.   Also available on youtube here: https://youtu.be/S7PTdEspqdA For more information about the Roaming Through Romans Lent series see http://thevinesheffield.org.uk/roam2021  Any questions?
