S2.E22: Urgency Culture. What's all the hurry?
Turns out urgency culture stems from FOMO. Why does it feel like everything needs to happen right now? Tune in to our conversation about how to stop urgency culture in its tracks - because let’s face it. That feeling of succumbing to urgency can be dangerously addictive and harmful. S2.E19: How to Manage Your Boss
Let’s go after this paradox - how and why should we manage our bosses? Channeling some Office Space vibes in their dress for success segment (Admit it - you love this movie as much as we do!). Drs. Amber and Richa make fun of the stereotype of a manager who just pushes and pushes and asks for unreasonable favors while leisurely sippin’ on his coffee. Truth is in today’s work environment everyone is stretched thin with what is being called the “great promotion” which accompanies the “great resignation.” The hosts delve into this topic with their guest Jennifer Chapman to examine the different personality types of bosses (hands off vs. micromanager), how to create intense 15 minute planning meetings, work conflicts, getting promoted, and how to avoid falling into a victim mindset. Rewind: Knocked Up or Knocked Out? (Part 2)
This episode is a scheduled, reflective rewind. Our last episode "WISEcast Under Fire! Do we deserve equal pay without equal effort?" featured a debate with our friend Neil Thompson about this topic inspired by this rewind episode, Knocked Up or Knocked Out? Part 2, which we endearingly term KUKO. KUKO featured four accomplished women in different STEM careers from science, academia, technology and medicine. Two are mothers and two are not. In KUKO the women shared their stories and experiences about whether motherhood is a driver for inequities in STEM careers and how we can work to move the needle. The question and debate remains unresolved but there is some hope that motherhood won't always be a driver for inequities in STEM. S2.E18: WISEcast under Fire! Do we deserve equal pay without equal effort?
We are under fire…but not besieged! We have a friendly debate with WISEcast’s good friend and male ally Neil Thompson on whether we as women deserve to get equal pay without equal effort, especially when it comes to the high-stakes act of negotiation. Neil brings a unique perspective to this conversation that hails back to one of our first episodes in Season 1, Episode 6: Knocked Up or Knocked Out? (Part 2). We want to know what you think after listening to this debate on whether the goal and in a sense the greater good of gender equity with pay requires giving women a boost even when it isn’t something we are directly working towards! S2.E13. 2022, A Bright Outlook on the Tech Sector and the Sisterhood of STEM
In this episode we discuss how the future in tech is bright for women with an emerging demand on the skills we already possess. We discuss this and more with Donna Loughlin, the founder of LMGPR who is known for her work with futurists and innovators. She excels in the realm of storytelling, and uses those skills to propel new companies into the mainstream. Inspired everyday by the forward-thinkers she works with, our guest has a deep fascination with advancements in AI, automotive, consumer electronics, and more. Dr. Austyn Matheson is originally from Calgary, Canada. She has a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering (Bio specialization) from Queen’s University Canada. After this, she briefly worked in the Oil and Gas industry as a facilities engineer before venturing to Ireland to do a Masters of Bioengineering at Trinity College Dublin. After her master’s, she moved to Toronto, Canada, where she worked at a medical device and started designing a point of care diagnostic device. SheI started as a production technician and moved on to leading a team as an engineer. She then moved back to Calgary to start her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the University of Calgary. The focus of her PhD was on the protein Lubricin (a protein that provides lubrication and other biological functions in our joints, on the surface of the eye and in other locations in the body). During her Ph.D., I had two international secondments, one to the University of Connecticut and another to the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, where she was hired as a postdoc in January 2021. She will continue working on Lubricin as she was awarded a Marie Curie Sklowdoska award (a co-fund called ADMIRE) that will begin in 2022.
Outside of work, Dr. Matheson is an avid runner who also loves yoga. Instagram science communication is one of her newfound interests, and she is excited to learn about technology and apps to share her research online and connect with other researchers.

In this episode, we have a vivacious conversation with WISEcast's long time friend and supporter Carolina Little about how to overcome feelings of isolation in academic or workplace environments. When asked about how much responsibility the institution or organization has and how much the individual has, she gave us a very surprising answer.
After 20 years in oil and gas working in refineries, labs, remote rig locations, and manufacturing plants, Carolina decided after her last layoff to work as a Job Search and Career Path Consultant coaching individuals to optimize their professional brands and career opportunities. She also matches top STEM talent with the right hiring teams working as a Freelance Technical Recruiter to several aviation, aerospace, and startup companies. Over her career, she has studied and practiced several techniques to learn how to navigate successfully through male-dominated professional waters and teach other professional women how to do the same.
