Juneteenth and the black excellence that is Executive Producer, Jazmine Henley-Brown! Pt. 2.
We’re celebrating Juneteenth with more black excellence! Jazmine Henley-Brown knows where all the bodies are buried! As an executive producer she wears a lot of logistical hats, including booking and rubbing elbows with major celebrity talent! In part 2 of our conversation she tells us how her love for reality TV and pop culture informs her professional acumen, and how she never gets star-struck! She also gives some incredibly JUICY details on how creatives can get their own shows produced–from ideation to production.

Her reality is my guilty pleasure! Pt. 1. Feat. Executive Producer, Jazmine Henley-Brown
As Juneteenth approaches, let’s pause to celebrate black excellence! Fittingly, for this episode and my Juneteenth episode I have the pleasure of chatting with Executive Producer, Jazmine Henley-Brown! Jazmine serves as the EP of podcasts with Sony Music on “It’s Giving Fashion” hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race frontrunner, Shea Coulee! And is the former executive producer for Reality with The King, with Carlos King–RHOA producer, and creator of the Love and Marriage and Belle Collective franchises–and the More Sauce podcast label at SiriusXM, where she oversaw existing shows by our favs in reality TV Porsha Williams and Tamar Braxton. Her reality is my guilty pleasure; I looove reality shows, and her podcasts are an extension of my favorite moments and celebrities in reality TV!

"OCD was the worst thing to happen to me." Feat. 3x TEDx speaker, Shaun Flores
WARNING: This episode discusses several triggering themes such as rape and suicide. Shaun Flores is a former high fashion model whose world changed when he began experiencing repetitive unwanted thoughts, alongside months of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. That period led to a surprising diagnosis of OCD. Now Shaun Flores is a 3x TEDx speaker, a mental health and OCD advocate with the International OCD Foundation. Today we talk about OCD and mental health matters co-existing with grief, and the intricacies of treatments like psychodynamic versus cognitive-behavioral therapy for OCD. This is the perfect conversation to wedge between Mental Health Awareness month and shifting our attention to black men; black fathers and sons.
While he says that OCD was the worse thing that ever happened to him, now Shaun is determined to be "the worst thing to happen to OCD".
You can find and follow Shaun on Instagram and across social media @theshaunflores.

Celebrity Hairstylist Shirley Gordon is Living Out Loud After Loss, Pt. 2
And now, part 2 of my conversation with legendary celebrity hair stylist, Shirley Gordon. I’d reached out to Shirley to continue my series of conversations for the “Get You Outta My Hair campaign effort”. I use the intimate stylist/client relationship to convey the relief that comes with expression of feelings and emotions to a confidant, and to encourage grief support. Shirley shares her grief story as she had to live out loud as the bold and audacious stylist, while battling depression after losing one sister, then leaning on her faith to grieve another sister in a healthy way.

Celebrity Hairstylist Shirley Gordon is Living Out Loud After Loss, Pt. 1
I am truly in the company of a legend on this episode–the legendary celebrity hair stylist, Shirley Gordon! I’d reached out to Shirley to continue my series of conversations for the "Get You Outta My Hair" campaign collaboration with stylists. Together, we are using the intimate stylist/client relationship to convey the relief that comes with expression of feelings and emotions to a confidant, and to encourage grief support.
This conversation with Shirley is timely in so many ways–May is mental health awareness month, and May marks one year since Shirley lost her sister and brother-in-law in a very public car accident here in the DMV area, made national when it was amplified on the Real Housewives of Potomac. This is a relatable and victorious story for her community and my listeners.

The Narcissists' Code: Lee Hammock AKA @mentalhealness shows how you won't keep a narcissist happy!
May is Mental Health Awareness month. As it approaches I want to amplify the content of some of my favorite mental health and wellness authorities and podcasts in place of a few regular episodes. These podcasts extend our conversations, and expand our knowledge of the topics and ideas I and my guests introduce here.
Meet social media’s favorite self-aware narcissist, Lee Hammock, known on all his platforms as @mentalhealness. He hosts a podcast called, The Narcissists’ Code. This episode features excerpts from episodes 559 and 702 of his podcast–on the happiness that narcissists are after in a relationship, and whether their partners can realistically supply it.

It's Giving Narcissism: Dawn's story of Toxic Relationships, Love Bombing, and Grieving what wasn't real.
From a series of conversations I’m calling, “Get You Outta my Hair!”, meet Dawn. Dawn is a hair stylist in the DMV area who’s seen herself in a number of toxic relationships. Today she opens up to share her story of being love bombed, ignoring the signs, and grieving the people she thought she knew.
Anyone who has a regular stylist or barber knows the unique relationship that forms between client and stylist. We basically dump on each other, right? Lol. Through that lens, I’m inviting stylists to join me in demonstrating the power of intimate conversation, expressing what we’ve been holding in, and using this as a gateway to exploring grief recovery and/or therapy. This week, we are getting toxic relationships out of our hair! You can find and follow Dawn on Instagram at @dchairllc.

“I hate when people tell me that I’m so strong.” Annette’s Grief Story, Pt. 1
At the time of this recording, it was the eve of the anniversary of the death of the patriarch of my family. This was my uncle Stanely–the oldest of 12 children and so looked up to by his siblings, nieces and nephews, and the community–his neighborhoods. But it goes without saying that his wife, my aunt Annette, has experienced this in a way that none of us can imagine. She also lost her mother one year before losing her husband. Today she shares her story publicly because she sees the value in my grief exercises and believes there’s potential in using her transparency to help the rest of our family heal as well.

Award-Winning Music Producer Jay Fenix: Fenix Rising, Pt. 1
Just as his name implies, Jay Fenix’ career follows a path of resurrection. From the disappointment of hoop dreams unrealized, to becoming a grammy nominated producer, number one on the Billboard R&B, and more than 20 weeks on the Billboard Top 100! Jay Fenix is the artistry behind hits like Melanie Fiona’s “It Kills Me” and collaborations with many of our R&B faves like Ari Lennox, Jaheim and Raheem DeVaughn. He sits down with me to talk about the false starts and upsets in his music career, and ultimately what brought him back to music and finding his sound in a space full of noise.

Hurt People Hurt People: Working on the grief to get to the release.
Last week you all met LaKeya. This week she’s inviting you into another session as she prepares to guide her kids through two exercises that will be really beneficial to their long term menta, emotional and physical health as they cope with the losses of their father and grandfather. LaKeya shares some compelling observations–trauma in her husband’s past, and patterns in how her mother responds in times of conflict that might also point to traumatic life events. These two observations really represent how hurt people go on to hurt people, and how she is breaking that cycle right now.

“My kids and I lost my husband and his father just months apart”
When I developed this show, I knew I wanted it to be a space to be inspired by people on the other side of change, but also give a glimpse into the lives of people navigating the change that comes with loss and hardship in real time. In this episode you'll meet LaKeya, a mother of 5, who is dealing with the loss of her husband and his father just seven months apart. In this episode she revisits the trauma, loss and life events she's experienced to date, to identify and unlearn the unhealthy ways she coped, and support her children through grieving the loss of their father and grandfather in a healthy way.
We’ll be working through my grief recovery workbook activities, given before 4-week sessions–whether that’s a 1:1, a group session or a session with a couple or family. Participants typically complete one activity before or during the first session, then we progress through additional activities week by week.

UNC Linebacker Cedric Gray on Going Pro: Pt. 2
Here’s part two of last week’s enlightening conversation with UNC Tar Heels Inside Linebacker, Cedric Gray, along with his NIL agent, Pet Sumner. In this episode I finally wrap my mind around what “NIL” is! And we hear from two student athletes in the DMV area who want to optimize NIL as they head into collegiate sports. All over the country the nation's top high school seniors have been committing to NCAA schools. And football gets the most attention! So this is a timely and relevant conversation about change as it relates to sports—and the road to going pro–or not.

Ever wanted to write a book? Author Bridgette Alfred shows us how it can help you heal.
This is a Thankgsiving miracle… An episode from my lost files! We experienced some technical difficulties during recording that made it seemingly impossible to release the episode. I was able to recover parts of the conversation, and the tone and timing of this conversation could not be more perfect for this time of year.
Bridgette Alfred is a past attendee from one of my workshops at the Maryland Department of Labor where I’d presented my ITSME approach. Bridgette penned a novel as a tribute to her mother who’d passed in 2016. She shares how her mother’s history helped her face her own childhood trauma and to heal. And she penned it well into her retirement, which goes to show you it’s never too late to heal and that your past is always a part of your story.
Is journaling a part of your healing and self-care toolkit? Have you ever wanted to self-publish a book? Bridgette’s story gives you some insight into the book writing and her experience working with a small, independent publisher while sharing her story and tools for healing after loss, change and trauma.
You can find Bridgette Alfred and her book, When There is H.O.P.E. at thereishopealways.com, and search her page “Hope Is Real Devotional” on Facebook.

Is it ok to be emotional over my divorce? Holiday Blues and a Special Emcee Q+A:
This week we have an emotional Emcee Q+A from a listener who’ll be navigating divorce in the middle of the holiday season. For many this is the kickoff to what’s often described as the happiest season of all… We gather, give thanks, and look forward to reconnecting to loved ones… But for so many others it’s a difficult time of year–as we begin to grieve the people we’ve lost, relationships that have ended, and even mourn the absence of the relationships we want. It can feel more like the holiday blues.
I’m going to shift gears as we move into the holiday season. I brand myself as The Change Coach, but what I don’t mention often is that I’m a certified grief recovery specialist. Grief is a normal and human reaction to change and the Grief Recovery Method® is a comprehensive, evidenced-based program that I use and believe in. There are so many events and losses that don’t get the healing and recovery they need. So as we head into the holiday season, I want to share tips and resources from my grief and change frameworks, and the Grief Recovery Method®.

Online dating: How to get a match, and how to get a meet up!
My emcees will remember Corey Belin from Episode 24, and his pot-stirring male perspective in the conversation of dating after divorce or separation! After that show Corey pitched online dating to me as a show idea. You’ve seen Corey on Ninja Warrior, and season 4 of the Oprah Winfrey Network TV show, Ready to Love. Now he’s producing a hilariously scripted comedy "tightly based" on his life and experience with online dating and navigating the first date! He now calls himself the First Date King. Midway through our conversation I bring in my second guest, Dr. Kayra Alvarado–an educator and influencer who also served as a community marketing manager with Bumble–to empower women to make the first move, and to confidently move off the app and into first dates.
You can find and connect with Dr. Kayra Alvarado at @kayrazalvarado on Instagram. You’ll find Corey on Instagram at @coreybelin and @1stdateking, and at www.1stdateking.com.

You wanted it, and now it’s here–the male POV! The follow-up to episode 19, Changed Ever After. "I Moved to Mexico for my Mental, Emotional and Financial Wellness"
Natisha Willis is a DEI practitioner and life and wellness coach. We met when we were chosen by Brown Ambition podcast host, Mandi Woodruff-Santos, for her inaugural career coaching cohort–the Mandi MoneyMakers. We’ve been meeting and chatting since earlier this year. And I was always in awe of Natisha’s story–one of those reasons: in 2018 Natisha made a move most of us only fantasize about–she left the U.S. for a simpler, more gratifying life in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Today she joins me to talk about living and working as an expat and how it’s improved her quality of life across the board–we’re talking mental, emotional and financial Wellness! She’s going to share her story, and we’ll discuss the cultural differences in work styles and priorities as we observe them in the DEI space. And later, we’ll hear commentary from two additional guests, my cousin Ashley Cottrell and my friend Ayoka Blandford who both made similar moves to Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, respectively. And I’ll have them all share some tips–for anyone who's considering making this kind of move, this kind of change

Changed Ever After: Life After Divorce or Separation
Going through divorce and separation, we can feel isolated and like there’s no one who can relate to what we’re going through. So in this episode I bring you four relatable examples to look to. We're talking change after divorce or separation. I’m having a panel conversation with a few friends–I’m calling them “The Confidantes!” Three women, and myself, who are all on the other side of divorce and separation, and very different outcomes and circumstances. Living “together but separate” until you can afford to live apart, forgiving infidelity, being best friends after divorce, and explosive endings that lead to beautiful, new beginnings... These are real examples of change, ever after.

The Startup Hack Nobody Talks About–the “DBA” Option! A mini (but mighty) episode! ;)
Gems on gems on gems in this mini episode! Jina Etienne from Etienne Consulting wasn’t available during the production of last week’s episode. We hopped on a quick call after the show; she shared her feedback on my Quick Launch Guide and the sections where I discuss building your network and being referred to an accountant, and there were just too many nuggets not to share with my emcees! So while I’m on vacation, enjoy this jewel of a conversation! And I can't wait until her full episode where we can expand on some topics she mentions–the 10 questions startup clients always ask, and when and why to consider an LLC.
You can contact Jina by email at jina@etienneconsulting.com, and by phone at 301-778-5510. As she says–be sure to mention my name and the podcast so you get a timely response! 😆

Start Your Business Right Now with my Quick-Launch Guide!
In this episode, we get real about the analysis paralysis that keeps some of us from moving forward with our business idea. Each day we see hundreds of incredibly successful entrepreneurs and influencers across our feeds, but for some that level of success seems so out of reach. In this “quick-launch” discussion I simplify the road to entrepreneurship and we walk through my Quick-Launch Guide–a bare bones, 10-step guide to get a business idea from ideation to operation. In a future episode I’ll also bring in a panel of experts–accountants, insurance providers, web and graphic designers–to do a deeper dive into the quick-launch approach.
Special thanks to my “commentators” today, who add flavor and commentary to the conversation! Get Yourself a “Hype Man”!
What will be your entrepreneurship story?
Dr. Vanessa Allen didn’t want to be an entrepreneur! But she had an encouraging husband who was a serial entrepreneur himself. He stayed in her ear about going into business for herself and practicing medicine the way she wanted.
This is what can happen when you stop taking your skills and talents for granted, and listen to the people around you who see what you sometimes don’t see!
Everyone doesn’t have a hype man. No encouraging spouses in their corner. No role models or successful examples of entrepreneurship within their networks. We all need one! And that’s precisely why I’ve decided to do this series of interviews–to stay inspired and hopefully inspire others. Listen to Dr. Vanessa Allen’s entrepreneurship story here and on YouTube.
