Virginia Roach, Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
Virginia Roach, Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
Virginia Roach, executive director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, has a formidable track record as a nonprofit leader and higher education administrator and a strong commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to work at the top of their potential.
Over the course of her career Roach has been a professor, an executive for the National Association of State Boards of Education, and a special education teacher. From 2015 to 2020, she served as dean at Fordham's Graduate School of Education, and before that, was dean at Bank Street's Graduate School of Education. In both roles, she led the expansion of the schools' online programming and worked strategically to diversify the student population.
As a professor and department chair at George Washington University, Roach built a departmental research infrastructure and was heavily engaged in the school's financial planning. She has a long record of academic publications in the K-12 education space and a deep understanding of the needs of—and assessment approaches for—different learners.
One of the reasons she was drawn to CTY and its mission is her personal commitment to educating students who are not satisfactorily served by the current K-12 education system—a commitment formed through her experiences as a special education teacher early in her career.
At CTY, Roach continues to take a research-oriented approach to her work, in particular to understanding what theoretical concepts about defining advanced learners transcend cultures, and what ideas or attitudes can create barriers that may stand in the way of assessing and educating academically gifted students. Other priorities include expanding partnerships to meet the needs of academically talented children from a variety of backgrounds through policy, programming, and social supports, and ensuring that CTY has the support and infrastructure needed to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing educational landscape, domestically and internationally.
Roach earned a bachelor's degree in education from Michigan State University and attained a M.A.S. in public administration from Johns Hopkins University and an Ed.D. in educational administration from Columbia University.

Zara Rutherford, 19YO Aircraft Pilot
Zara Rutherford, 19YO Aircraft Pilot
My name is Zara Rutherford, I am 19 years old. I have just completed my A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, and hope to go to university to study computer science/computer engineering. I have been flying for as long as I can remember and one of my biggest dreams (as well as flying around the world!) is becoming an astronaut.
In August 2021 I left Belgium heading West, flying solo around the world flying in a very small plane. If I succeed, I will be youngest woman ever to fly solo around the world as well as the youngest person to fly solo around the world in a microlight.
I was born into a family of aviators and was lucky to have great role models in my parents and grandparents. I want to build on this heritage and inspire others. My aim is to encourage girls and young women to pursue their dreams and promote aviation and STEM-related careers (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) for them. Only 5% of commercial pilots and 15% of computer scientists are women. In both areas – aviation and STEM – the gender gap is huge. In fact it is a dream gap. Our dreams are formed in early childhood. Children are being told fairy tales like the Sleeping Beauty, where the prince travels with style and courage through difficult and dangerous places. The princess is beautiful, sleeps and waits for the prince to rescue her. Boys learn from history books, street signs and statues, that they can be scientists, astronauts or CEO’s. They are much more likely to receive science-related toys and are being encouraged to be bold. Girls get gifted dolls and are expected to be charming, beautiful and sweet. Upbringings shape our dreams.
The youngest man to have flown solo around the world, Travis Ludlow, was 18 years old. The youngest woman, Shaesta Waiz was 30 at the time of her flight. With my flight, I hope to reduce this gap from 11 years to 11 months.
I hold FAA and UK private pilot licenses plus Slovakian and French microlight licenses. I have been a member of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots since 2019.

More than 250 masterpieces from the most important museums of Peru reveal the mastery and the skill of the pre-Columbian goldsmiths of the Central Andes, as well as how gold forged the belief, the rituals, the earthly and heavenly spheres, and the way of representing the political and the religious. The force of unknown symbols, represented by the finds pictured in this book, leads to the understanding of the spirituality of these ancient peoples. The mystic dimension of life and death lived through a deep relationship with the gods is evoked by the outstanding images which picture their connection with the afterlife. Inca: Origin and Mysteries of the Civilisation of Gold highlights the tie with nature, focusing on the contrast between power and submission, sea and mountains, and earth and sky, without forgetting the importance of the Sun and the Moon in the idea and perception of the universe.

The family moved every other year on average as Neil rode the corporate roller-coaster, from Ohio to Michigan to Illinois to Michigan to New Jersey to Pennsylvania and then Texas, where Neil literally and figuratively is meeting his Alamo in a valiant battle with lung cancer. In the final stages of this life, he has entered hospice care. I hope this episode portrays more than just a career journey but also a reflection on life and how far we can come as human beings.
This interview on March 27, 2021 is his last interview. In it he and Toby discuss the role of business in society, of corporations' responsibilities to their employees, and his lessons learned in life. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, BASF ran an ad campaign with the slogan, "At BASF, we don't make a lot of the products you buy, we make a lot of the products you buy better." It was, an ingenious set of ads, and one that summarized the Vogler-Usnik family experience. At the end of 2019, the company employed 117,628 people. In 2019, BASF posted sales of €59.3 billion and income from operations before special items of about €4.5 billion.

Nate Garvis, President of Naked Civics and Co-Founder of Studio/E
How do we align incentives so that organizations aggressively move us towards better societal outcomes in ways that our political class is unable or unwilling to do?
How do we create and live into the potential of strengthening our communities from a place of “want to” rather than “need to”?
Those are the questions that Nate Garvis has successfully answered for leaders in a wide spectrum of sectors over the past decades. As president of Naked Civics, LLC and author of Naked Civics: Strep Away the Politics to Build a Better World, Nate has constructed new pathways by furthering the framing of corporate social responsibility. He has served on a number of academic, business, and non-profit boards including Allina Health, the Public Affairs Council, the College of Arts and Science at the University of St. Thomas, and Youth Frontiers. Patrick Robinson, CEO & Founder of Paskho
Patrick Robinson, CEO & Founder of Paskho
"By the time I was 40, I had a great track record of designing for other people – Giorgio Armani, Anne Klein, Perry Ellis, Paco Rabanne – and I joined Gap to head up their global design team in 2007. But then I started hearing stories from our denim factories: The rivers downstream were blue from all the dyes, and the fish and the water that these communities depended on were becoming contaminated.
So I decided to do something about it: I committed to making sure that all the water leaving Gap’s denim factories would be cleaner than when it went in. We printed everything that we did for clean water on the garments – because I thought people cared and they should know. The initiative was a huge success. That was the first time I understood that if we could be smart about it, we could do good business that was also good for the environment.
Deep down inside, we don’t seek the meaning of life, but the experience of being alive.
- Joseph Campbell
A few years later my son and I were walking down our street in New York and he asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. At first, I laughed - but it was actually a great question. Because somewhere along the way I had stopped designing clothes and had become the guy who manages the people who design the clothes.
And then, on a backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park, I started thinking: Why is it that skiers, trekkers, and triathletes always get the best of what’s new in clothing? Their apparel is strong and light, water-repellant, nearly indestructible, resistant to sweat and bacteria, flexible, multifunctional, and comfortable for a long haul. As a lifelong adventurer, I dreamed of utilizing cutting-edge technology from fitness, backpacking, and adventure gear to design comfortable clothing that’s stylish enough to for work and play. I imagined going from a flight to a hike to a meeting to dinner wearing one completely comfortable, utterly beautiful, incredibly sustainable outfit - making it easier to focus on life's journey.
Paskho is built to suit the freedom-seeker and the maverick nomadic and the fearless observer, all together.
- Patrick Robinson
That idea became Paskho. First, I designed with reclaimed fabrics, which allowed me to create limited-edition pieces and prevent more waste from going into the landfill. As we grew, I worked with my fair trade factory to add sustainable textiles and reduce waste. We eliminated unnecessary plastic polybags, and from the very first day we donated a percentage of sales to environmental causes through 1% for the Planet. You can read more about our commitments on our sustainability page.
Paskho is built to suit the freedom-seeker and the maverick nomadic and the fearless observer, all together. It excites the possibility of discovery -both inward and outward. Paskho speaks to the interconnectedness of our world, and inspires you to find new greater personal freedoms.
I believe design has the capacity to elevate us emotionally and spiritually. Great design isn’t just a question of pretty aesthetics; it’s really a question of how we want to live our lives. I am honored that you have chosen to join me on this journey."
