To Health With That! MTHFR Mutations.

By Amy Neuzil

This podcast breaks up BIG health topics, like MTHFR, into small, easy bites that add up to in-depth knowledge. All in ten minutes or less.
We'll talk about why folic acid can be toxic, how the MTHFR enzyme is in bed with estrogen (scandalous!), why it matters to be able to turn some genes off, and why high-folate foods make some people feel depressed, and so much more

Iron Levels and Infertility

Iron Levels and Infertility

Iron deficiency anemia can be a significant problem when you're trying to conceive or going into a pregnancy, but even without overt iron deficiency anemia, your iron levels can still have an effect. We'll discuss: Why it's important to test both red blood cell iron levels and also ferritin, the storage form of iron. What iron deficiency anemia feels like, normally and in pregnancy. The possible complications of anemia in pregnancy, childbirth, for the neonate and even for the child of an anemic mother beyond the neonatal period. The relationship between men's iron levels and men's fertility especially with sperm parameters. Iron infusions and why we love them. Iron levels are an important factor in preconception and pregnancy and while every doctor will test basic red blood cell levels, you  may have to advocate for yourself to get your ferritin tested. Here's the video version of our chat. Have genetic polymorphisms? Work on them in the private community, Genetic Rockstars. If you'd like to take a course on MTHFR, click here. Subclinical hypothyroid and Fertility

Subclinical hypothyroid and Fertility

Overtly low or overtly high thyroid levels are a well known risk factor for infertility, but today we're going to talk about something a little bit less well known, which is subclinical hypothyroid and fertility. Subclinical hypothyroid is when the thyroid tests are on the lower end of normal, but still within normal limits. The patient experiencing this might have symptoms of mild low thyroid, or might be asymptomatic, but research is showing a link between this "normal" thyroid and fertility difficulty. We'll talk about: The effects of high and low thyroid on women's fertility The suprising effect of low-normal thyroid levels on fertility Thyroid testing TPO antibodies (or thyroid peroxidase antibodies) and their effects on fertility in women with normal thyroid levels Thyroid hormones and when they are prescribed for women in fertility situations The effects of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid on sperm levels and sperm morphology (that is high and low thyroid function) Routine thyroid screening in pregnancy How naturopathic doctors can help Thyroid is a known cause of fertility difficulty, but not all doctors are aware of the link between low-normal thyroid function and impaired fertility.  Follow this link for the video version of Dr. Kate and Dr. Amy talking this one through. Mental Health and Infertility

Mental Health and Infertility

The infertility journey can be a difficult path and is often an endurance race with sprints mixed in.  This episode is less about mental health expertise, we will defer to therapists, counselors, and mental health professionals for that, and more about starting a conversation around some of the issues we see commonly in our practices.  Four of the big ones that come up are: Self worth, self image, masculinity and femininity The timed sex problem (because making sex a task-based activity takes a lot of the magic out of it) Actual loss Not getting the thing you want, only makes you want harder We'll also talk about the link between the increasing stress of infertility, and stress making it harder to conceive. Additionally, Dr. Amy will mention a couple of homeopathic remedies that are useful in the infertilty space as a support to help you heal. Dr. Kate and Dr. Amy both encourage you to take mental health as seriously as you do your physical health and we hope this episode can encourage some conversations with friends, loved ones, or mental health professionals. Four Phases of A "Normal" Menstrual Cycle

Four Phases of A "Normal" Menstrual Cycle

To begin to talk about what is abnormal about women's menstrual cycles, we have to first understand what is normal.  Most doctors and experts tend to talk about the two phases of a menstrual cycle, but to more accurately represent the lived experience of having a menstrual cycle, I think four phases are more accurate. These are: Menstrual Follicular Ovulatory Luteal Each phase has its own level of energy, physical changes, and of course hormone processes in the body. Each one also tells us a little bit about how you feel in the world at that time of the month. Let's talk about it! To see the video version of this podcast or read the show notes, go here. S2E42: Emotional Eating - an Interview with Tricia Nelson

Tricia Nelson is an emotional eating expert and the author of Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating.  I am delighted to have the opportunity to talk with her because emotional eating, while it might sound like a departure for me, is a common problem among us MTHFR folks.   Anyone with MTHFR, COMT fast, or MAO-A fast can be more susceptible than average to emotional eating because emotional eating typically stems from low dopamine or low serotonin. Emotional eating falls within the realm of addictive behaviors and so it can be an MTHFR issue. The full interview is roughly 30 minutes and well worth a watch - check it out in the show notes here.  To visit Tricia Nelson's website or schedule a consultation with her, please go to healyourhunger.com. S2E41: MAO-A Fast and the Carbohydrate Rollercoaster

This week we'll talk about another gene SNP picture that is called MAO-A Fast. Having a fast MAO-A means you break down neurotransmitters faster than average, and since this gene SNP breaks down Serotonin, Melatonin, Norepinephrine, and Epinephrine you can imagine it leads to quite a lot of self-medication, and the easiest way to self-medicate is with Carbs. So we'll talk about: What is happening when you reach for the sugary and starchy carbs How to get off of the carbohydrate rollercoaster What diet is best for you Other things you can do to support healthier neurotransmitter levels. S2E34: B12, MTR, and MTRR

S2E34: B12, MTR, and MTRR

Of course B12 is important to methylation and MTHFR, but why is that precisely? Well, spoiler alert - it has something to do with two different genes that are also involved in the methionine pathway - MTR and MTRR. So this week, let's talk about: Which gene creates especially difficult to treat issues with homocysteine (especially in combo with MTHFR). What to do about MTR and MTRR polymorphisms Why I talk about MTHFR so damn much How to get on the beta list for a teachable course this summer. you can click here for the complete show notes, and here if you really want to be a Genetic Rockstar.

COMT and MTHFR

To kick off our series about other genetic polymorphisms, we're starting with a heavy hitter called COMT. This week we'll talk about: What COMT means, what it does, and why that "M" is so important for MTHFR folks. Why theoretical math on a genetic report might not be as important as your symptoms and personality. What neurotransmitters, hormones, foods, and supplements are affected by this gene SNP. Why geneticists should never be in charge of naming babies. Thanks so much for listening. The complete show notes here here. S2E28: Other Gene SNPs with MTHFR

S2E28: Other Gene SNPs with MTHFR

MTHFR is not the only gene SNP out there - I know, you'd never know that if you listen to this podcast. So let's start a mini-series about other polymorphisms, but first we need to talk about the perils of deep diving into a genetic report. Genes are not very linear, but then what are they and how can we talk about them in a way that makes sense? There is one really big thing that matters a lot more than what gene SNPs are on your genetic report, do you know what it is? Do you know how to work with your genetics if you've never had a genetic report done? Let's discuss this and more. S2E27: What Is Really Going On With MTHFR Basic State?

MTHFR Basic States are an idea that generates a lot of controversy. Some well-respected practitioners don't like to use the idea at all, and some do. So let's talk through Basic States and I'll tell you why I think Basic States are a great concept that is really useful when you're working with MTHFR. We'll talk about Where the idea of basic states came from Why I don't like the terms "undermethylation" and "overmethylation" The risks of paying attention to gene SNPs but not basic state - especially when you aren't working with a practitioner. S2E25: MTHFR Questions From Listeners - Products and Marmite.

Listeners Liana and Tim asked a couple of great questions this week so let's dive into them. Liana asks about specific product suggestions for 5-LMTHF - we'll talk about what to look for, a few of my personal favorites, and companies that I trust. Tim asks about whether there is or isn't folic acid in Marmite and this sent me down a rabbit hole of questions, so we'll talk through the somewhat ambiguous information that is out there on nutritional labels, and what to do with that. Also, how afraid do we need to be of added folic acid? I'll also dive into another great yeast-based food, which is nutritional yeast and what you need to look for there. S2E23: The Risks of UMFA in Pregnancy

S2E23: The Risks of UMFA in Pregnancy

Last week we talked about the remarkable results 5-LMTHF produced in couples struggling with infertility relative to high-dose folic acid, which is the standard of care.  This week, let's expand on that by looking at some possible risks of high-dose folic acid to those very same pregnancies. First, let's talk about the actual difference to blood levels between high and low dose pregnant women. Then, a study linking UMFA in certain groups with risks of ASD or autism spectrum disorder. Lastly, a study showing an interesting link between UMFA levels and food allergies. While the research on UMFA in pregnancy is in early days, it still brings up some compelling points to share with your team of practitioners during pregnancy to make sure that you are getting the best supplementation for you. S2E22: The Harm that 5000 mcg Folic Acid Can Do To Fertility with MTHFR

5000 mcg folic acid is the standard of care for pregnancies that are considered high-risk and pregnancies in couples struggling with infertility. Unfortunately, many of those couples have MTHFR polymorphisms in one or both partners, and for anybody with MTHFR issues, this is going to actually impair the fertility process and damage their health.  We'll talk about one particular research study that followed 33 couples with MTHFR polymorphisms who used the simple addition of 5-LMTHF to drastically change their successful pregnancy rates. Supplements for Anxiety with or without MTHFR

Supplements for Anxiety with or without MTHFR

I'm hoping it goes without saying that balancing your methylation is the first step you should consider taking with anxiety, with or without a known MTHFR mutation. But after that, there might be some pieces you still need to clean up with supplements and that's where these three suggestions come in. We'll discuss: GABA - a neurotransmitter that shows great results for long-term anxiety coverage An herb that has great research for short and long term anxiety  and is equivalent in effects to a common benzodiazepine A category of botanical medicines that genuinely help your body adapt gracefully to every kind of stressor.  Sign up for the weekly newsletter at tohealthwiththat.com, or join us in the MTHFR community Genetic Rockstars. Water is so talked about that it has become a non-answer for everything. Nobody pays attention because it's just too simple. Most B vitamins are great with MTHFR. No big issues and they generally make us feel better.  There is one, however, that is a bit tricky and that is vitamin B12. In this episode we'll talk about: Which form of B12 is most likely to cause symptoms Why being bonded to cyanide isn't actually a huge deal The form of B12 that is showing the most promise for people with chronic fatigue syndrome (or ME/CFS as they're calling it now). Psst... There are Different Types of Folate. Which is Best For You?

Psst... There are Different Types of Folate. Which is Best For You?

The term "folate" is incredibly confusing because for whatever reason, the term is used interchangeably with "folic acid," which is an entirely different thing. This week let's talk about folate, folic acid, folinic acid, and 5-LMTHF and also, which is best to take if you happen to be an MTHFR mutant because really, who actually knows what the eff folinic acid is? We'll talk about: Which type builds up toxic unmetabolized products in the blood Which type is found naturally in foods like lentils and dark green leafy veggies Which type feeds most directly into cellular energy Which type feeds into neurotransmitter production Which type entirely bypasses the MTHFR enzyme. Also - great news about an MTHFR community, coming soon. See the full show notes here!

This Vitamin Could Be Hurting You. Not Just For MTHFR!

This Vitamin Could Be Hurting You. Not Just For MTHFR!

There is a vitamin that is helpful in normal doses, but toxic in high doses. It is added to your food, energy drinks, and of course, your multivitamin. It's folic acid - and it's not just a problem for MTHFR mutants. In this episode you'll learn: How folic acid is linked to cancer promotion The strange, double-edged relationship between folic acid and cognitive decline in the elderly What happens when too much folic acid stays in your bloodstream How MTHFR mutations amplify the problems Visit the show notes here for all the details, links to research articles, and don't forget to sign up for the mailing list so you're the first to know when our MTHFR courses go live.

Methylation, Detoxification, and the Glamorous MTHFR Lifestyle.

Methylation, Detoxification, and the Glamorous MTHFR Lifestyle.

What is the glamorous MTHFR lifestyle? It's maybe a bit less glamorous and more just... lifestyle.  In this episode we'll talk about: What does detox mean for normal people who don't live on wheat germ and sprouts? What do methylation and MTHFR have to do with detoxification? What types of things need to be methylated to be eliminated? What does that have to do with urea? And why do I care? Does "sweating it out" really do anything? And for real - what is this MTHFR lifestyle of which you speak? We're getting to the end (yay!) of the background info and soon we'll get into the juicy balancing-your-methylation stuff, so stay with me!  If you're a visual person, like I am, then there are some great graphics in the show transcript that will help this all to make more sense.

Health Problems Linked to MTHFR Mutations

Health Problems Linked to MTHFR Mutations

This week we'll talk about the health issues associated with MTHFR mutations (or polymorphisms). These include: Midline abnormalities Cancer Cardiac disease Fertility issues Neurological problems Mood and psychological differences. It's kind of a depressing list, made far less depressing by the miracle that is epigenetic. Remember, MTHFR polymorphisms are actionable, meaning you CAN change their impact on your health. Also, learn about a bonus MTHFR superpower! It's not quite eyeball laser beams, but it's still pretty good. Check out the full show notes here.

What is MTHFR in the simplest terms possible? It's a magic chair.

What is MTHFR in the simplest terms possible? It's a magic chair.

MTHFR research on the internet can lead to a back hole of confusion, so let's demystify it with the "magic chair" analogy. What is the MTHFR magic chair? Why do some mutations matter to the magic chair and others don't? When do bottlenecks happen at the magic chair? Why does the MTHFR magic chair need to be working?  Why does anybody care enough to make a whole season of podcast episodes about it? Let's dive in to the first layer of MTHFR information and we'll build on this knowledge with every episode. For show notes and more information you can see the blog post here.
