Pride in Manitoba has come a long way since the first Pride protest in 1987. Although Pride has become a regular event in Winnipeg, many rural Manitoba communities are celebrating for the first time. In 2019, Pembina Valley Pride held its first event in Morden. For 2SLGBTQ+ individuals living in rural areas, rural Pride events are a chance to see you're not the only one who feels the way you do.

May is Asian Heritage Month. With 51 countries comprising the 45 million km² of the Asian continent, that's a lot to cover in only 31 days. However, the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba takes full advantage of this time to celebrate the diverse diaspora represented in this community.

It's been a long journey for Anishinaabe artist Brian Waboose. Experiencing abuse within the residential school system and feeling lost, art helped Waboose find a path in life. After his son tragically passed away, art helped him again.

Anti-Racism is the active practice of opposing racism and promoting racial equality. Although sometimes it feels like racism is a thing of the past, unfortunately, there is still systemic and overt racism in our communities. In response to newcomer communities' experiences of racism in sports groups, the Anti-Racism in Sport Campaign was started.

The campaign will hold the Access and Inclusion to Sport Conference this weekend.

Each year, to bring in Asian Heritage Month, Calgary and Winnipeg hold the FascinAsian Film Festival. Art is such an essential part of life. However, sometimes there are barriers to seeing it. That's why artists like Jag Nagra create art that's accessible to everyone. If you go for a walk in downtown Vancouver, you might see Nagra's work on a wall or some stairs. But she does more than create amazing art inspired by South Asian culture. As a proud queer woman, she advocates and works to end the stigma against 2SLGBTQ+ people.

Having faced physical and mental hurdles, Vivek Mehmi has taken to music to explore healing. Migraine Love is the latest project in that journey.

One Winnipegger has made it his goal to showcase content important to his community. Noticing a lack of representation here in Canada, Solomon Baleke created Winnipeg Swahili TV. For the past three years, he's been doing what he can to feature content in the language of more than 200 million speakers worldwide. 

In 2018, 79% of Canadians aged 15 years and older reported volunteering. Of this number, a majority were people of an older age. 

If you're younger and haven't, that's okay. Many young people deal with a lot at school or work. However, volunteering has many benefits when you're young, as you never know the people you'll meet or the opportunities you may find. Volunteer Manitoba is the place to find those opportunities.

In 2021, Canadians lost $231 million from scams and frauds - and that's just what's been reported. With technology becoming an increasing part of our daily lives, knowing how to spot potential scams and what to do if you fall victim to one is essential. 

Every February, events and activities celebrate the legacy and accomplishments of Canada's Black population, and although it's come to an end, celebrating Black Canadians is something we should do year-round.

Award-winning multimedia journalist Elton Hubner shares the tools one needs to tell enthralling stories. Starting with only 25 students in the '80s, the school has grown to accommodate over 150.

That's how newcomers feel leaving their homes to create a new life here in Canada. Some may know a tiny amount of English, others none. Bridges English Language School offers a specialized approach to learning English. 

Laura Castillo is its creator. She touches on the challenges newcomers face learning English and how we can better improve learning to ensure no one falls through the cracks. 

Utilizing the energy and political movements of Punk rock, a new bedroom band has one goal to lift spirits with their eclectic blend of fuzzed-out punk and deconstructed pop. Olenka Krakus and Jeffrey Moon created positive People. Their song "Praise Be" is about mental health journeys, mourning, and gratitude.

Let's meet up with Olenka, who shares her journey with music, English literature, her Family's flight from Communist Poland, and how she became involved in the Lower Mainland's punk scene.

The past few years have been difficult for most people. We've heard stories of lost jobs and people losing everything. Homelessness, addiction, mental health, employment and food security have become much more apparent and a reality for many more. But these are things that people have been struggling with for much longer than during the pandemic. 

Non-profits can go a long way in helping those who have fallen through the cracks of society. Peg City Kindness Crew is one such organization that has popped up in the past few years. Although volunteering and support are critical, improving attention to these issues and challenging our governments is the only way to make meaningful change. 

According to all scientific evidence, we will have to make some dramatic changes in the coming years to ease the impact of the imminent climate emergency. Scientific approaches are important, but we can also learn a lot from elders and knowledge keepers of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities.

That's where the Lake Winnipeg Indigenous Collective comes in.

Established in 2001, Returning to Spirit provides healing and reconciliation workshops nationwide.

A mother, grandmother, and residential school survivor, Executive Director Lisa Raven applies her experiences and expertise to the idea of reconciliation, working with people to help them move forward from what has been keeping them stuck in life.

Chubby Cree is a Grandmother-Grandson duo that uses the healing power of music to empower women and youth and increase awareness of social issues across their hometown of Edmonton.

The group has released its first single, “Rock Your World.”

A musician has released an album to evoke the healing nature of trees and encourage listeners to think about their world and the climate.

The album is called Songs for Trees.

In 1987 Manitoba passed the Human Rights Code, protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation, prompting the official Pride March in Winnipeg. 🏳️‍🌈

Thirty-five years later, Pride Winnipeg has grown to include communities of diverse sexualities, gender identities, and relationships. Although society has developed tremendously since the first Pride event, we must continue to fight for the rights of all generations to come.

You don’t have far to experience the magic and beauty of Iceland, with Gimli host to the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. 

In anticipation of the festival, a poetry and shorty story contest is held, inviting writers worldwide to showcase their creativity in the written arts. This year’s theme is the Spirit of Iceland.

May 2-8 is Mental Health Week for the Canadian mental Health Association.

The pandemic has only increased the challenges people face with mental health. There are services and programs available if you or someone you’re close to is struggling, and we have the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba to talk to us about that.

Incorporated last year to address different needs in the community, Community Helpers Unite has three goals:

1) Open a permitted community kitchen to upcycle food into meals;

2) Deliver free cooking and grocery classes to marginalized groups;

3) Provide volunteer opportunities to those with barriers to employment.

June is almost here! Not only does it bring the promise of warm weather and sunshine, but cultural festivals. 

For those in the Greater Victoria area out in B.C or those looking to plan a summer vacation, Folktoria will be taking place from June 4 to 5. 

Members of Folktoria are ecstatic to hold an in-person multicultural event once again. Even more exciting, it's Folktoria's 5th anniversary. 

Thursday, February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Ukrainians watch in horror as their friends, family, and culture are ruthlessly attacked.

Many Ukrainian-Canadians are doing what they can to support the brave Ukrainians fighting to preserve their way of life. Yevgeniya Tatarenko and many community members have created Help Ukraine: Morden, an organization collecting resources and supplies and shipping them to Ukraine. 

A lack of representation is the highest reported barrier to Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour workers’ sense of belonging in the Canadian live music industry. 

Closing the Gap is a research study led by the Canadian Live Music Association that provides evidence on the nature of inequalities experienced by IBPOC live music workers and actionable policy recommendations to improve representation in the live music industry. 

Spring is here, and a lot is happening. Of course, not just the change in weather but community events and initiatives eager to stretch their legs after the long winter. With Covid restrictions continuing to ease, there is a tremendous desire to reconnect. 

Jennifer Chen is one of those people. She is always dedicated and passionate about giving back to her community. Involved in several non-profit organizations, Jennifer has decided to go one step further, getting into politics. 

To get involved in Women of Colour Community Leadership Initiative: 

For many years we've seen a lot of pain within the Indigenous community. Murdered and Missing Indigenous women and girls, unclean drinking water, the fight to protect Indigenous land. More recently, the news of children's graves found at residential schools.

Native Women's Association of Canada is a voice for many within the Indigenous community. They are doing a lot of good work.

Lorraine Whitman is amazing, and it was an absolute pleasure to sit down with her to find out more about the organization and the Indigenous community. 

What was life like before? No matter how much we ponder, it will always be an alien reality to our own, another world. Some things help, and fossils are one of them. 

A new announcement sheds some light on the mysteries of Manitoba millions of years ago. Tucked away in the city of Morden, the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre has unveiled a nearly complete shark specimen. Executive Director Adolfo Cuetara explains why this discovery is fantastic for science and his community.

A first-of-its-kind festival is taking place in rural Manitoba. Winter Fest, a celebration of the heat of the islands and the cold of the Canadian winter, invites Manitobans for music, camaraderie, and delicious Jamaican food.

I checked out the festival's test drive Thursday and spoke with organizer Neville Hamilton and musician JEDIMZ.

Although there are many memorable activities to enjoy during the Canadian winter, one can sometimes miss the warm weather of summer.

In Steinbach, Manitoba, a new restaurant can help warm you up with delicious Jamaican food. Neville Hamilton is a busy man. Not only did he create the International Reggae Afro Latin Music & Arts Festival, but he is now the proud owner of the Di Reggae Grill.

ACOMI, African Communities of Manitoba Inc, unites the Winnipeg community through unity and friendship of people of African heritage in Manitoba and understanding between peoples of African heritage and Canadians of all backgrounds. 

With it being black history month, I wanted to connect with ACOMI to learn about the organization and some of its programs coming in the future. With more, here’s Tolu Ilelaboye.

Last winter, U Multicultural hosted an Ethnic Music Concert Series, inviting artists of all backgrounds to share their music. One of those groups was the Dust Rhinos. 

This 5-piece Celtic rock group has seen members come and go. The current roster, Ryan Spracklin, Darren Wittmann, Ivanka Wtkin, Dan Cannon, and Blair McEvoy, is a tight-knit group of friends ready to perform traditional airs and reels and jigs and have fun doing it.

When you listen to the top 40 hits on the radio or your favourite streaming service, although great in their own way, they can sometimes feel like they’re missing something, the living essence of what music can personify. Latin music is a great example of music as a living entity. Let’s catch up with three musicians who create this genre of living music, Trio Bembe.

Music is transcendent. The swell of an orchestra in the triumphant moments of a hero, bops over the radio and you’re driving in your car, or the lively jumping and smooth soul of jazz in a club, music is incredibly flexible.

A person who embodies that magical essence of music is a friend of U Multicultural Onna Lou.

If you’re feeling defeated, down, or frustrated with the ongoing pandemic, you’re not the only one. It’s easy to feel disconnected when you’re stuck in your place and can’t go out to do the things you enjoy. A great way to find some connection is through volunteering. Even in this pandemic, there are opportunities for you to give back to your community and find those connections.  

For individuals 18-29, there is a new opportunity through Volunteer Manitoba to make that difference. 

Canada’s winters can be unpredictable. Here in Manitoba, one day, we can have lovely warm sun. The next, it can be blistering cold. Even those who have lived here their whole lives can get caught off-guard. 

To help inform newcomers of the challenges of winter and settling in a new province, the Canadian Red Cross has the SmartStart Injury Prevention program.

I may be a bit biased, but the Winnipeg community is amazing. There’s no better example than Winnipeg’s North End. The North Point Douglas Women’s Centre is a gathering place for that community, with programs designed directly from the needs that the community has identified. 

Tara Zajac is the Executive Director and shares how things have been going on at the centre. 

From October to January,  there are many observed festivities. Diwali, Dio De Los Muertos, Hanukkah, Christmas, Ōmisoka, and Kwanzaa. 

I haven’t heard much about Kwanzaa, so I reached out to the Canadian Kwanzaa Association to find out more practice which was established back in the 1960s.

Dr. Eddsel Martinez was born and raised in El Salvador. He and his family immigrated to Canada in the early 1990s and has called Winnipeg his home since. Always drawn to children, he worked as a camp counsellor throughout several summers of his adolescence which cemented his desire for a career working with children.  

Dr. Martinez talks about the start of school and fall and how it has and will affect children during the pandemic.

RAVEN is a registered charity with a mission to raise funds for Indigenous People's access to justice. Another important aspect of RAVEN is increasing awareness of the challenges many Indigenous People and Nations are facing.

The STEM fields are incredibly skill demanding, and you want the most qualified people in those jobs. However, due to many social and systemic issues, it can be challenging for women to find employment within these areas. More so for immigrant or international women.

GerryFest is a festival dedicated to the life and work of Gerry Atwell.

It's up to dedicated scientists and students who spend their careers seeking to learn more about life millions of years ago. Dr. Femke Holwerda is one such scientist. As the Dr. Elizabeth Nicholls Postdoctoral Fellow at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, she studies the diet of mosasaurs from the Bearpaw Formation in southern Alberta.

Camping, hiking, and nature exploration continue as people enjoy the latter half of summer before the Canadian fall kicks in and the dreaded winter. Spending as much outdoor time as possible, people may not be thinking about ticks as the height of summer passes. However, according to Associate Professor - Veterinary Entomology at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Kateryn Rochon, it's essential to keep close attention until there is snow on the ground.

Dr. Kateryn walks us through the various ticks we can find here in Canada, how to identify them, and the best practices to protect yourself from tick-borne diseases.

The Scandinavian Cultural Centre of Winnipeg is a volunteer-driven organization, with members joining clubs of the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Food is a key part of culture. The Brandon Friendship Centre developed a pilot project to create a food truck to help introduce Canadians to Indigenous cuisine and culture.

I got to sit down with Indigenous Eats manager Darian Kennedy about this project, building community collaboratively, and the delicious food you can get at Indigenous Eats. 

August 6 – 8  Folklorama Fusion, the one unified virtual experience, is taking place. The one Multi-cultural Fusion event is the first time the ethnocultural member communities that make up the pavilions will virtually showcase their heritage. 

Here’s Executive Director Teresa Cotroneo to tell us more about this virtual festival and the history of Folklorama. 

Lisa Muswagon is a Nakoda Cree member of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, also known as Cross Lake in Northern Manitoba. She was raised in the north, the Interlake Region and Winnipeg and went back to her home community to complete high school. Receiving a hand drum from her father when she was young, she has been performing ever since.

Hellnback is also known as Karmen Omeasoo and is from the Samson Cree Nation in Alberta. The community is part of the hub of Maskwacis Cree Nation south of Edmonton. A veteran in the native hip-hop industry, Omeasoo has come a long way. Hellnback first gained international recognition as a founding member of the groundbreaking group War Party.

I had the opportunity to chat with both Lisa and Karmen about music, culture, and Karmen’s Kidney journey. 

I believe science is one of the coolest things ever, and it's incredibly inspiring to see people enter STEM fields. However, there can often be a challenge for the general public to interpret and understand the in-depth work scientists go through.

Dr. Cody Lo is an Ophthalmology Resident Physician at The Ottawa Hospital. Cody obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Bachelor's of Science (BSc), majoring in Pharmacology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver and graduated as a Wesbrook scholar. Cody and I discuss his passion for scientific research, advocating against health inequities, and helping mentor the next generation of leaders in his community. 

In Canada, 94% of Kinesiology and Physical Education university faculties are white. As of September 2020, only 5.7% of NHL players identified as Indigenous, Black, or part of a Racialized community. How can sports be an equal playing field when we see statistics like this. 

The Anti-Racism in Sport Campaign seeks to increase, promote, and engage in discussions on anti-racism in sport about the presence of all levels of racism in sport in Winnipeg. It also looks at the impact of racism on people’s lives, raises awareness, addresses, and eliminates racism and discrimination experienced by First Nations, Metis, Inuit, Black, Racialized, and Religious Minority communities in sport.

With what we’ve been seeing about residential schools, understanding and acknowledging the pain of Indigenous communities is more critical than ever. Manitoba 150 has announced partnerships to deliver Blanket Exercises for 50 acts of reconciliation.

I talked with Sky Bridges, a board member of Manitoba 150, about how people can get involved and discuss diversity and reconciliation.

For those who don’t live there, Winnipeg Manitoba’s North End often has a rough reputation. However, For Tara Zajac, there’s no place she’d rather be. She knows her neighbours, those in the community care for their own, and she loves how the region almost feels like a small town. Tara is the Executive Director of North Point Douglas Women’s Centre and shares their work in the community and the amazing people living there.

Vivian Ketchum is a residential school survivor and has healed enough to share her story. With the news of the 751 discovery of 751 unmarked graves near a former Saskatchewan residential school, awareness of this institution needs to continue to ensure these stories are not forgotten. U Multicultural is sharing the stories of Indigenous people as a part of the "We Stand Together" initiative for residential schools awareness.

Although COVID-19 has caused uncertainty about events and festivals, the International Reggae Afro Latin Music & Arts Festival has decided to transition to a virtual live performance instead of cancelling its event. 

Created to be the catalyst to express the underrepresented talents on a professional platform, the entire event is an opportunity for people to unite. COVID-19 has been a drain on everyone’s mental health. But women are facing higher rates of mental health issues than men. Over the past year, there has been an increase in women in Manitoba reach out for support.

On July 4 – July 11, 2021, the 9th annual Run for Women will be held as a virtual event. Rita Chahal and Eileen McDonald of Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba go in-depth about this shared movement supporting women’s mental health.

On May 27, the First Nations community was shaken when the remains of  215 First Nations children were found in unmarked graves on what was once a residential school in Kamloops, B.C. Some of the children were as young as three years old.

These are the voices of our First Nations pained by the loss, frustrated by systemic racism and oppression, and the stories of survivors who lived through horrific conditions at these schools.
