Ep 67: James MacDonald - John o'Groats to Lands End, and Back; RAAM, 24-hr Indoor Attempt

In this episode, we talk with James MacDonald, the only solo Race Across America finisher from Scotland. James reached the finish line of the world's longest non-stop bike race in a time of 11 days and 19 hours to earn 12th place overall in 2016 as a rookie. After this epic test of endurance, James went on to achieve something very special: the Guinness World Records for the fastest N-S-N double crossing of the island of the UK.

In 2017, James rode from John o' Groats down to Lands End and back up to John o' Groats, covering a total distance of 2,711 km (1,684 mi) in a time of 5d 18h to improve the former record by 3 hours.

His latest challenge was to improve the actual 24h indoor track record of 941km, which was set by me in 2017. He was at a very promising pace, found his rhythm, but then he crashed and had to cancel his attempt. Global Cycling Network covered his attempt so you can check it out in more detail!

It will be James' future challenge to give it another try and today we will talk about our experiences in riding the velodrome nonstop for thousands of laps. Let's roll! 🚲💨

Ep 64: Dominik Meierhofer - 24-hr World Champion (2021)

In this episode, we talk with a very talented ultra racer from Austria, Dominik Meierhofer - Radsportler, who is still very young in terms of ultra cycling, but has achieved some astonishing results. Dominik was the winner of Race Around Austria 1500 km and reached the podium in a couple of 24-hr races and long distance events like the Glocknerman Sprint or the Austrian Championships in ultra cycling.

Recently, Dominik won 1st place overall in the 24h category of the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships, which were held as a virtual event this year. For me, personally, this is something very special and maybe one of the toughest things you can do in our sport.

I will ask Dominik about his future plans and about his goals for the years to come. I know that if you have achieved so many athletic feats at Dominik's young age of 26 years old, you can have a very successful future in ultra cycling. Let's roll! 🚲💨

Ep 61: Mike Cohen - A Heartfelt Story of Cancer Survivor Biking Across US

Mike Cohen has a heartfelt story to share with all of us after battling cancer for many years and most recently suffering from a heart attack. Mike's story is one of inspiration, resilience, and determination to live his life to the fullest and to give back to the world along the way.

As a cancer survivor in 2012, Mike bicycled 3,168 miles across America from San Diego, California to Long Island to show what's possible even in the worst of life circumstances. Then after suffering from a heart attack and receiving a heart transplant from a man who died in active duty while serving in the US military, Mike was determined to meet his donor's family. So in 2019, Mike biked 1,426 miles from San Diego to Jacksonville, Florida.

Life has never been quite the same for Mike since surviving cancer and receiving a new heart, but I think it's safe to say, it's all been for the better.  Mike is just 35 years old so there's still a lot of road ahead of him to continue telling his inspirational story. Let’s roll! 🚲💨

He has also completed two of his own 450 mile rides from San Jose to Los Angeles in addition to a 1,000 mile round trip training ride for RAAM. Ep 45: Dex Tooke - Completing Unfinished Business in RAAM

Ep 45: Dex Tooke - Completing Unfinished Business in RAAM

Unfinished business. For many of us that's the case at some point in our ultra cycling endeavors. It could have stayed that way for ultra cycling veteran, Dex Tooke, who made it 99% of the way in the Race Across America in 2010 but had to make the difficult decision of DNF'ing just shy of the glorious finish line in Annapolis, Maryland. In his words, there are a thousand reasons to give up and not keep going, but you have to find that one reason to push on. And so in 2011, Dex came back strong with a successful RAAM crossing and has since crewed for countless other solo racers.

In addition to RAAM, Dex set two cross state records in Texas, competed in the Tejas 500, and founded the well-known No Country for Old Men ultra event in Texas. Dex was a smoker in his younger years and also an ultra runner and has a wealth of experience and wisdom to share with all of us, as well as in his book aptly titled Unfinished Business. It's fine. That's the ongoing joke inside of Jen Orr - Ultra-endurance Cyclist's circle, but in this episode there's no joke about what Jen has been able to accomplish in just a few short years of becoming an ultra cyclist, a transition from her previous life as a competitive triathlete. Notably, Jen has recently set 8 World Ultra-Cycling Association (WUCA) world records in her 24-hr record attempt in Borrego Springs, California, grabbing the distance records of 100-, 200-, 300-, and 500-km, as well as the 100-, 200-, and 300-mile records, and also the 6 hour timed record.

Last year, Jen won 1st place overall in the Race Across the West (RAW) and in 2018 she won first place in the women's category at the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships (WTTC). Her RAAM qualifier was also at the 24 hour worlds back in 2017. In a short amount of time, Jen has also acquired a lot of experience through racing over 20 double centuries in California and crewing for Seana Hogan - Transcontinental Record Holder's 2018 Race Across America (RAAM). I can't wait to follow her RAAM journey in 2021!

Ep 41: Om Hitendra Mahajan - World Record Holder at 18 Years Old; Only 3 Months of Ultra Cycling Experience

What were you doing just before you turned 18 years old? For Om Hitendra Mahajan, he was celebrating his birthday early by breaking a Guinness World Record, cycling the entire country of India from Kashmir in the North to Kanyakumari in the South––a total of 3,600 km (roughly 2,200 miles)––in a record time of 8 days 7 hours 38 minutes. But like most ultra cycling adventures, it wasn't without its difficulties. Fortunately for Om, he had an all-star crew with Indian ultra cycling great, Kabir Rachure who finished RAAM solo in 2019, and Om's own father, Hitendra Mahajan, and uncle, Mahendra Mahajan, who were the first 2-person Indian team to finish RAAM in 2015. Most surprisingly, however, is that Om has only been riding ultra distances for 3 months before his world record attempt, after 5 years of National level road racing. John and Nancy Guth are no ordinary couple. While most grandparents enjoy kicking back, relaxing, playing with their grandchildren and watching them do ambitious things, the Guth's are the ones setting the bar for their entire family and quite frankly making us all look bad! At 67 years old and 70 years old, respectively, John and Nancy are often known by their Race Across America team name, Team Beau & Babe. Since 2010, Nancy has raced on 5 RAAM teams, setting records and making history along the way, including her 2012 2-person over 60 team record with her husband, John, in a time of 8 days 3 hours 43 minutes. This powerhouse couple also hold the over 60 mixed record in the Race Across the West and the four-person mixed record on RAAM team Beau, Babe and Boys in a time of 7 days 53 minutes. And to cap it all off, they've also won in the 6-12-24 World Time Trial Championships in Borrego Springs, California. In 2021, Nancy is hoping to become the first female to race in the 70+ age category.  Exciting stuff! I’m your host, Justin Too. Let’s roll! 🚲💨

Ep 1: Show intro with host Justin Too

Ep 1: Show intro with host Justin Too

Welcome to the brand new ultra cycling show! I'm your host, Justin Too. Let's roll!

The vision of this show is to bring together the ultra cycling family through fun and friendly interviews, news, and ultra-minded content.

And when I say ultra cycling family, I really do mean family. As an ultra cyclist myself for over a decade, I've crossed paths with so many strong and courageous riders out there on the roads, and without fail, I've always received so much care and support from them all from single day events up to several hundred miles in length to multi-day events across states and countries.

There's so much fun, beauty and adventure when it comes to ultra cycling, both in the people, the courses, and the events, so it only makes sense to showcase them with compelling content to keep the ultra cycling family connected and growing strong.

On this show, I'll be interviewing ultra cyclists from all around the globe, from racers to randonneurs, to get in the minds of the ultra-endurance community covering everything from events to training to nutrition to all the tips and tricks in everyone's ultra cycling toolkit.

I'm also excited to spotlight popular ultra events and courses while highlighting the latest in ultra cycling news.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, or in this case, a single episode. So thanks for tuning in and I hope you'll join me on this ride as we kickoff the ultra cycling show together.

Together, let's keep spinning ultra! 🚲💨
