▸Are you proud to be from your country? Are you patriotic? Why or why not? 🤔 We know this is a really tricky question and it's possible that your answer is going to be more of an emotional one than a rational one based on a list of pros and cons. But it's such an interesting topic to think about, and based on where we were raised, our perceptions of patriotism can be so different from one another! Just take Germany and the US, for example. Those two countries couldn't have a more different approach towards this topic which is why in this week's episode, we talk about how and when Germans and Americans are patriotic and how we've experienced patriotism (or the lack thereof) in our home country vs. our respective home of choice in the last few years. Do you know where your ancestors came from? Josh did a genetic ancestry test a few years back and found out that he's mostly German and Irish! Taking these tests and speaking about your ancestry is a pretty common thing for Americans which is why this week, we took some time to discuss this ancestry-fascination in the U.S. and how ethnicity and racism are inherently intertwined with the topic as well. With buzz words like race and ethnicity so baked into the American vernacular, we also talked about Feli’s first interactions with these categories that are almost considered tabu in Germany. Our friend Anna - a Ukrainian who fled to Germany - joined us to tell us about her experiences living in Ukraine when the war began, what life was like in the first few weeks of the invasion, her journey to Germany, and how she has adjusted to life here in Munich. In this week‘s episode we head west from Germany (at least mentally if not physically) and had the opportunity to interview two of Josh’s French friends - Chloé and Laetitia. September 26th is going to be a big day for Germany! The German people are electing a new Bundestag (federal parliament) and after 16 years of being in office, Angela Merkel decided not to run anymore and Germany will be getting a new chancellor. But how do elections even work in Germany? What's up with all that talk about an Erststimme (first vote) and a Zweitstimme (second vote)? And how is the chancellor elected if people don't vote for them on the ballot? In this week’s episode, we got the opportunity to interview Rachel Stewart from the ‘Meet the Germans’ series by the German international broadcaster DW - Deutsche Welle. In her YouTube videos and on Instagram, Rachel explains and introduces some of the quirky aspects and cultural traditions of Germany and its residents to non-Germans in a very entertaining but also educating way. Rachel is originally from the UK but has been living in Cologne, Germany for some time now. But how did she even end up in Germany? And what is it really like to 'meet the Germans' as a Brit? All of those questions are going to be answered in this episode and, of course, we also wanted to know more about what ‘Meet the Germans’ looks like behind the scenes and what they have in store for the future. We really enjoyed getting to share our experiences about moving from our home countries, adapting to new surroundings, and discovering some of the interesting differences between the US, the UK, and Germany and we hope you'll enjoy this episode as well. Being fluent in another language opens a lot of doors in life. Josh gets to live abroad in Germany and work for a German company because of this while Feli was able to study in the US and eventually move there. However, being bilingual and especially living “between cultures”, as our podcast title says, can also bring internal challenges with it. One of those things that we’ve experienced ourselves is feeling like you have two different personalities in the two languages – like there are two different versions of yourself. Imagine moving to a foreign country to go to a boarding school where you don’t speak the language fluently - and all of this at the age of thirteen! To many, that would sound like a nightmare but this week’s guest did so willingly and even stayed to complete his schooling there! We’re back from our break and are hitting the ground running! While we enjoyed having some time off to relax and recharge, we couldn’t wait to get back in front of the mics and start recording again.
