Freedom, Obedience and Submission
Pretty much all of your big, billion-member-type world religions require fealty. Submission. Put your own personal stuff aside and obey something greater than oneself. Yeah, not us UUs, though... right?
Maybe not. Consider: Among the dances we do, of joy, and love, and yes, a dance of death, do we do a "dance of supplication"?
Is such obedience actually the path to true freedom?
Plus fidget-corner narration, superbly curated Announcements from our dedicated Worship Associate, a Zen master's guidance, and occasional auditory punctuation from those for whom the prospect of a fidget corner was insufficiently enticing.

Are We Ready For Pride?
After the announcements and comedy skits (pretty sure Rev. Dave's Top Ten List qualifies for the latter group), comes the serious question. What kind of commitment are we making to ensure the safety of those whose very lives are threatened by the right wing's culture war? How can we adequately support them, as America's individual states pass legislation and impose regulations deliberately intended to harm its own citizens?
Also, information on how to procure an "ugly yellow 'Side With Love' T-shirt. And re-framing what it means to "burst your bubble" with a new communion, intended to help everyone be free to be who they are.
With Worship Associate Sasha Greyenbuhl, and musical accompaniment by John Pruitt.

Thirty-six Righteous People
Thirty-six who are righteous and hidden? Are they among us? This question, among other lessons from the Kabbalah, are an integral part of this week's service, along with gratitude for those willing to be imprisoned for their beliefs.

Blessing of the Animals
In this annual sacrament, we recognize the selfless contribution made by our beloved animal companions, as well as remembering those dear souls who were once part of our lives. These are the creatures "whose only mood seems to be, 'I want to be with you always.'"
You'll hear stories about butterflies and songbirds, and of course, "Amens" punctuated by unscripted barks and growls.

Reimagining Covenant
Just what is "Covenant" supposed to be, anyway? Rev. Dave notes that in 2018 UUMAN gathered to determine what shared values we had, and came up with "Love, Connection, Wonder & Awe, Courage, and Justice." And then he asks: "So what do those words mean to you? Do they mean the same to me?" And that's where we have to dig a bit deeper, so we do. Even if it means, for example, poking holes in the efficacy of the long-cherished Golden Rule.
But before the digging, there's a short skit about the Hand... no the Elbow, no the Fist-bump, no, rather, the Wave, of Friendship, which may or may not be a "freak show", that we experience in-person, in service.

The Great Stories
Join us this week as lay preacher and educator extraordinaire Rollin Mathis introduces us to the first of what will become a Second Hour Adult Enrichment course this year.
Where else can you not only find the holy grail, but hear a musical jingle performed on the spot to promote its search? Also, the usual announcements, readings, and musical accompaniment.
A note about the sound--we apologize for the occasional flashes of static from wireless connections, that aren't caught by our noise filter. While hopefully not too distracting, we recognize the issue and should be able to contain this in future episodes.

Do We Hear the Cries of Lamentation?
"For-profit prisons. Guns. Exploited domestic and migrant workers. Children workers. Our economic system!" And that's just the literal start of a much longer list of lamentable issues brought to the foreground that we have to consider, all crying out for our attention. Do we hear those cries?
People should not have to face crisis alone. May we have the courage to resolve, and use our muscle, to nurture our spirit.
This episode also includes an appearance by Freedom University's Gabriela Solis. This organization is devoted to empowering undocumented youth and fulfilling their human right to education. Also, an appearance by three hundred thirty million gods and goddesses.

Bonus Episode: Our Past President on Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Governance
"You've now seen one, then you do one, and then after a year of being President, you get to teach one." Past President Miriam Patanian answers everything you always wanted to know about how UUMAN is governed but were (maybe!) afraid to ask. She also shares how she came to "find our tribe" here in Georgia, why she felt called to this three year tour of duty, and what it how it was to be "unchurched" as an adult, after some years of being "Christmas and Easter-type Catholics."
And, of course, some thoughts on how her experience with the Our Whole Lives program shapes her vision of the future for what we call "sex education" in the public sphere. Were her kids' experience with GA Public Schools' attempts to educate about sexual health quite as cringeworthy-slash-ignorant as one might imagine? Sorry, no spoilers here, you'll have to listen to find out.

Ingathering Water Communion
"Peace, joy, love, tears, strength? It's all in there." After a summer's break, Rev. Dave Dunn and worship associate Mandi Winders lead this service to begin a new year at UUMAN, connecting one another through our annual Water Communion. Along with a wondering time story for all ages, you'll hear from four points on the compass as we recommit to ministry (thanks to our President, and current Program Council Chair), and charge the water vessel. Trickster Makes This World Go Round
"Balancing or taming our hungers is necessary to reduce the drain we are having on this earth, and it puts Trickster's energy in its place."
Lay speaker Donna Melcher takes us on a deep dive into the role of the Trickster, who lives among us and has been here for as long as our species has walked the earth. While it's known by many names, its constant throughout history has been to appeal to our collective and individual hunger.
Musical accompaniment, sound effects, vocal trickery, and off-mic mischief by John Pruitt. Worship associate announcements by David Kroeber.

Bonus Episode: The President Speaks Out
"People DO find us. I've always believed that if more people knew about UUMAN, our values, our unique brand of no-dogma spirituality, that many more would come and join us." Mike Chambers shares his vision of the Board President's role in accomplishing such worthy goals, reports relatively good news about UU membership trends, and talks about his past work as VP focusing on UUMAN safety and security policies.
He also points us to some artistic endeavors to which we might wish to read, watch, and hear; and the correct pronunciation of the word "succinct."
All while bringing thirty years of experience as a technical writer to provide answers that are the embodiment of succinct.

Expanding Liberty
Individual liberty is sometimes criticized as selfish, a failed doctrine, failing to prioritize community. However, the recent Supreme Court decision ending abortion as an individual right, now subject to legislative control, has led many of us to take a fresh look at the value of personal liberty.
As Unitarian Universalists, can we continue to side with love and protect individual liberty? Are these two critical components in conflict with one another?

So Long, Farewell and Goodbye
"Even though changes are coming, we can find happiness together." So preaches Randy Blasch, whose life changes will be taking him away. Whether it's a major relocation, or additions (subtractions?) to UU principles and sources, or gun safety laws, changes are fraught with difficulty yet, in the words of David Bowie, we have to "turn to face the changes."

The Beautiful Questions
For this week's service, our lay speaker Dwana Bush channels David Whyte who said, "a beautiful question starts to shape your identity as much by asking it as it does by having it answered.
And before you know it, you will find yourself actually shaping a different life, meeting different people, finding conversations that are leading you in those directions that you wouldn’t even have seen before.”

A New Song for "My People"
What does it mean to identify as a Southern white person in today’s world? Especially if your family history goes way back, racism is not just prevalent, it is part of the song we have sung for centuries. Explore the spiritual and emotional journey of making reparations for slavery in an old Southern family and what it takes for us all to ‘sing a New song of the South’, for our sweet homes in the southland.

The Gift of a Flawed Father
Merri Beth Stevens intertwines personal stories with just enough science and technology to allow us to grasp "the immense flexibility of the father's brain." Listen and learn to better understand what fathers, and father figures, do to us fellow humans (and in MB's case, how they compel us to take risks.)
Along with a road trip with a Stuckey's pecan log roll reward, instructions on how to play "Quaker", and what a father's faults and failures mean to us now.
Plus the greetings, readings, and skilled worship coordination from Greg Waggoner who had to work without a net (aka a printed "Order of Worship") this week.

Soundtracking A Life
Our memories are integrated with sensations of the experience: sights, smells, tastes, touch... and sounds. Our lay leader David Kroebel focuses this service on how the music we listen to creates a distinct time capsule for what is going on in one's life at the moment. In David's case, with the help of "mail-order music clubs (remember those?"), then cassette copying, and then ripping and duplicating, into the digital streaming world and intensely curated Spotify playlists. Each time, though, creating an individual time capsule appropriate for every existential crisis that might arise, every critical life event. Recalling and recollecting those memories.
Also: Guided meditation, speculation on what an hour of the Hand of Friendship might be like, and other stray ritualistic spoken bits that keep the ol' Service And More Album soundtrack a-rollin' along. Original musical piano accompaniment by Alex Pietsch. Copyright 2023. All rights reserved. Intro and outro background music by Tim Moor at Pixabay.

What We Need to Consider Concerning the Little Red Hen
Yes, in the "story for all ages", she did all the work. But in our real lives, do we want to eat alone, while others have nothing to eat?
When we examine the ways we are connected to others, we will most often find that it is where we work, where we serve, and where we share that we feel connected. Beyond the parable of the Little Red Hen, this service is also about building that connection more deeply, and includes our Worship Associate's reflection on "Belonging and Serving."

Hembree Park Service
You kinda had to be there. It's very omnidirectional microphonage audio, not the greatest (possibly the worst) quality of this podcast series. However, it does feature Dave Dunn's original harmonica stylings, highlights from several past services as read and interpreted by a cast of several, and the best efforts of Audacity's "noise reduction" effect to make it tolerable in your ears.
We'll be back inside the Sanctuary next week with audio from the usual YouTube sources, rather than yr humble podcaster's fifty-dollar phone.

The Quandary of Emergence
"An emergent entity, created out of chaotic, complex interactions within particles, can exert a causal force downward on the components themselves." Got that? No? Maybe you'll need to listen to the rest and then you'll understand. Maybe.

"Mother's Day is not easy, no matter who you are or what your circumstances are." But today's guest speaker Randy Blasch tries to sort it out for us. Channing Holiday Service
For today's service, hear a Universalist parable about a loving father, a drunken son, and a flaming pit. And learn how the term "Unitarian" was deployed as an insult at heretical thinkers, some of whom died for their beliefs. That is, until on May 5, 1819, when Rev. William Ellery Channing, the leader of the liberal Congregationalists split with the conservative Congregationalists, planted a stake in the ground, raised a flag, and declared "we ARE Unitarians." Along with the usual announcements, and spoken and musical merriment.

Reach Outside the Circle (Earth Day)
Join UUMAN's Earth Ministry, and our guest speaker, Georgia Interfaith Power and Light's Rosaleen Xiong, in a recognition of the upcoming Earth Day. This lay led service, features some splendid comedy (wait for it!) and the literally deadly serious naming of names among various US Presidents who have been either halfway-decent on the environment, and, well, pretty horrible. Of the latter, it should surprise nobody to learn that the worst offender's name rhymes with "Schmonald Schmeagan."
You'll also learn about the power of reaching outside the circle. And hear a flute calling you. Choir direction by Alex Pietsch. Musical interludes composed by Alex Pietsch, Copyright 2023. All Rights Reserved.

The Ox Herding Pictures
How does one achieve enlightenment? In the Zen tradition, this path of enlightenment is often represented by the Ox-Herding Pictures.
What are they? One of the pictures is blank? What could this mean? Can we even make sense of these? What do they call upon us to do?

Who's God's Mom?
This existential question has been posed, and answered, by theologians and philosophers throughout thousands of years of human history. For example, if one believes in the Big Bang theory: So who made the big bang? Also: Why posit a question about something, this "colorless infinity", you know nothing about? We'll try to arrive at an answer via the questions of pre-schoolers, and fun with hexadecimal codes.

Who Is Generation Z?
"We are Gen Z." Learn from our UUMAN Youth, who created and delivered this service. Find out how they feel about the world around them: The pressures of social networking, what's been done to our blue boat home, and what they're going to have to do for their own children in a few years. One thing's for sure: "How much time humanity has on earth is uncertain...Gen Z's forced to clean up the mess." Balanced with the kind of jokes, merriment and singalongs The Kids and Elders and In-betweens come to expect in our church home most Sundays.

Does Anybody Know What We're Doing?
"This might be one of the tougher sermons I've ever had to put together," Rev. Dave warns, and as you listen, you'll know why: The answer to the question posed in the sermon title is, often, "no." We somehow permit (just to pick two of many examples) child labor laws to go unenforced, and for-profit prisons.
But the good news is, we can say "yes" more often if we can somehow work with "7.8 billion collaborators."
Along with the usual announcements, improv comedy via Joys and Sorrows, musical interludes, and maybe the gentlest poke at... Buddhists?

Join us for a world of ways to understand how the proposed Article II Study Commission helps us think about ourselves as individuals, and ourselves as a congregation with a specific mission and vision. Francis David: The First Unitarian Universalist Minister
Aside from the fascinating, and ultimately tragic, true story of Francis David and Transylvania's too-brief period of mandated religious tolerance, this episode includes: New Member inductions; Our Music Director's Round Tuit awards; and an unforgettable Pet Eulogy. Along with the usual announcements ("Cake!") and fabulous musical accompaniment.
And as a bonus: If you listen to Rev. Dave's sermon, you'll likely know more about the "blessed Trinity" than most who profess to believe in it.
A note about the sound: due to some inattentiveness at the sound board, there is more mic hum than there should be. Audio software noise reduction has been applied, but it's still noticeable. Next week's should be better.

Fierce Love
Most of us would say we live with the intention to love. Oh, but then comes the practice of if! Can we "practice" a kind of love that is so large, so fierce, that it can stand the fire of anger, frustration, judgement and perhaps most challenging our inertia? This is often a very personal challenge in our relationships and it is our faith’s challenge at this time of political and societal divisiveness. After so much "distancing", what will bring us together?
This episode features our guest in the pulpit, the Rev. Deborah Bennett from Emerson Unitarian Universalist congregation of Marietta, Georgia.
Also, enjoy the musical stylings of the just-formed MUUsicshare musical ensemble, the usual announcements, and a not-too-snarky prayer.

Reimagining Our Principles and Sources
Throughout our history as Unitarians, Universalists and Unitarian Universalists, we have had principles and sources. Our current principles and sources are the result of numerous reimaginings across this history. We are being asked to reimagine. How will we respond?

It's Not Too Late
We’ve passed 350 ppm concentration of CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere…and the numbers continue to rise! But we’re not finished yet.
How can we be leaders and exemplars in reversing this trend?
We're also shaped by our efforts to improve our circumstances (and avoid broken bones).

A People So Bold?
For all the acknowledged heroes and martyrs in Unitarian Universalism's history, if one is willing to make an honest effort to learn more, one can find what Rev. Dave refers to as a "flip side." Prominent people, who self identified as Unitarians or Universalists, some of them very powerful elected officials, who made people's lives more miserable through their misuse of power.
And thus the questions: What is the real history of Unitarian Universalism’s quest for justice in the world? Are there histories that make us uncomfortable? How can we learn from our mistakes?

The 8th Principle of Unitarian Universalism
Join us as we delve into the process of adding another Principle to our beloved list. We'll hear readings, a parable about a fish and an inflatable raft, and semi-adjacent information about volunteer efforts, all intended to focus on the work of this institution and where we position ourselves in the quest to live up to "striving for justice."

Transformation Is What We Do
Shelley Nagrani wound up making a last-minute replacement for our scheduled "Pride Sunday" speaker yesterday morning, and gifted us with a sermon about how we present and transform ourselves. "What is behind the 'mask of UUMAN'? Nothing, and everything." Worship Associate David Kroeber shares his reflection about liminal space, and about "allowing things to be."

Forgiveness As A Path to Liberation
Our lay speaker this week, Lylah Lockridge, explains how "to forgive, is to cease to feel resentment" and that this is accomplished by "the act of looking past the act of one who has done us harm", and by "identifying with love, peace, innocence, and divinity."
Our worship associate cracks wise and admits nervousness. Also, lots of music. And singing. From the congregation. Actual hymns.

The Wheel of Fortune
Fate and fortune have puzzled theologians, philosophers, all of humanity throughout human history. Is “what goes on here” defined by arbitrariness, or is there some kind of puzzling direction to our existence? What are we to do? This Sunday's service, you will hear some singing. And you'll be hearing more to come in our near future, it seems.

Neighborhood Connections Ministry
Join Rev. Dave Dunn, our worship associate Mandi Winders, and a cast including a recent seminary student and a Family Promise leader as they provide support for a new program of personal connections. Can we live up to our motto to "Nurture Our Spirit, Strive for Justice, and Transform the World", one relationship at a time? By simply being present with and having a personal relationship with those in our community who are not necessarily like “us,” we can. How is this done?
