Madison James is a recent graduate from UVic, having completed her Bachelor of Arts in English and Professional Communications. Madison joined team Bounce in Early 2022, where she has been working closely with Rebecca to bring Bounce to the next level. Andrew Murray came to UVic in 1990 to do an MA. After beginning a PhD in 1992, he gradually morphed into a sessional instructor and then a continuing sessional. He taught his first class for the English Department in Fall 1995 and has been teaching ever since. In 2014, Andrew was hired as an Assistant Teaching Professor with his primary responsibilities being in the Division of Academic Writing, now the Academic and Technical Writing Program. Andrew's doctoral dissertation was on representations of reading in Chaucer, but his primary focus now is teaching, particularly ATWP 101, ATWP 135 and ENGL 146 and ENGL 200A. Andrew brings energy, enthusiasm, and kindness to every class he teaches. His interests include Chaucer, the pedagogy of teaching writing and literature, contemporary fiction in English, and the Arsenal Football Club.

Victoria Wyatt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History and Visual Studies at the University of Victoria. She teaches courses on responses of Indigenous artists to colonization in North America, and on visual studies and the impact of the Internet. Cynthia Spada is a sessional lecturer in the English and ATWP departments and also teaches literature and writing at Royal Roads University. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of The Floating World, a novel, and The Demimonde in Japanese Literature, an academic monograph, and she has published short pieces of creative writing in various genres. She is currently working on a historical novel based on her family's experiences in the Polish resistance and a collection of creative nonfiction essays that explore the intersection of environmental and medical humanities and the mysterious processes of healing. Adaezejeso Ezeaku is a recent graduate from UVic with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She is currently the UVic Bounce Student Ambassador, a role that came to be after her experience with overt anti-black racism on campus. After this incident, she joined the UVic Reflection and Challenge Committee (RCC) to help create action-oriented plans to tackle issues of racism, inclusion, and diversity on campus. Her experiences with racism and her passion for healthcare and its systemic role in the broader community led her to a path in the legal profession. In the future, she hopes to obtain a legal education and pursue a career in medical and animal law where she can advocate and create policies that are fair, humane, and just.

Bill Bird has taught Computer Science (and occasionally Software Engineering) at UVic since 2015. He often teaches the introductory computer programming courses for Engineering students (CSC 111 and CSC 116), as well as higher-level courses in Algorithms and Systems. Deborah Ogilvie earned a BA (2013) and MA (2021) in English from the University of Victoria, and an MA in Children’s Literature from Simmons University in Boston (2016.) To Deborah’s surprise, life didn’t pause during her studies, and instead threw some unexpected events her way. She spends most of her time these days having conversations about dinosaurs with her very favourite plot twist, who is about to turn six.

Dr. Stephen Ross is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Victoria. Stephen has always been a bit obsessive and anxious, from his early days as a “gifted” student (translation: anxious and people-pleasing) to his on-again/off-again relationship with academia—about which he remains profoundly ambivalent to this day. That journey has taken him from Chilliwack, where he grew up, to Burnaby for his undergraduate studies, and Kingston, Ontario for his MA and PhD, before bringing him back to Victoria for his career. He considers himself to have won the lottery in this last step in particular. As a professor at UVic, he especially values building relationships with students, and sees the role of teaching literature as inevitably bound up with the project of acquiring and spreading wisdom. His motto and future epitaph is “how hard can it be?”

In the last two years of her undergrad, Izzy also wrote for the student blog MyUVic Life. Though her post-graduate plans are not yet set in stone, Izzy hopes to continue to pursue her passion for learning and education through law school or a Master's degree. She hopes to develop a career where she can combine her love of storytelling and creativity, with activism and social justice.

Corinne Bancroft is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Victoria.  She earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a dissertation titled "A Child's Call: Braiding Narratives in the Face of Racial Violence" which traces how American authors focus on child characters as instruments for narrating violence, and how these children's voices call adult characters and actual readers toward a heightened sense of social responsibility.  Her publications appear in Narrative, Style, and Cognitive Semiotics. Dr. Bruce Ravelli is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Victoria. He is an award-winning teacher who loves teaching. He teaches many of the department’s Introduction to Sociology courses (his passion) as well as a fourth-year seminar course delivered using a community-engaged learning (CEL) model. The course requires students to leave the comfort of the classroom and work with local non-profit agencies to complete a project the agency would not otherwise be able to do.

Bruce has published articles and book chapters on Canadian culture, cross-national value differences, students’ anonymous evaluation of teaching and student experiences in CEL. Bruce has edited several readers, online resources, and is co-author of several textbooks for Introductory Sociology. Bruce also developed and maintains a website promoting sociology.

Dr. Jane Butterfield earned a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Puget sound in 2006, followed by an MS in the Teaching of Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in 2012. Her PhD research was in extremal graph theory, but she also enjoys topological graph theory, Ramsey games, and pursuit games on graphs. While a graduate student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, she received three teaching awards, including the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. She then spent two years as a visiting assistant professor, teaching talented high school students for the Math Center for Educational Programs at the University of Minnesota in addition to UMN courses. While there, she studied the effect of minor adjustments to timed entrance tests on gender diversity in the Center's program. Jane is now an Assistant Teaching Professor of Mathematics at the University of Victoria, and works with both the Math & Stats Department and the Division of Learning & Teaching Support & Innovation. In addition to teaching a variety of courses, including a lot of introductory calculus, she manages the Math & Stats Assistance Centre, which supports students across campus with their 1st- and 2nd-year mathematics and statistics.

Sarah Hunt / Tłaliłila’ogwa, a member of the Kwagu’ł (Kwakwaka’wakw) Nation from the northern part of Vancouver Island, grew up locally on the Songhees reserve in Lekwungen territories. Hunt completed her undergraduate degree at UVic, and PhD at Simon Fraser University, before moving on to serve as a professor at UBC for five years. She is a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Political Ecology in UVic’s School of Environmental Studies, a prestigious professor position given to Canada’s best and brightest scholars. Sarah is passionate about nurturing community networks with shared orientations toward decolonization, justice and self-determination. Indigenous peoples have long advanced a deep interrelation between the governance of Indigenous lands and bodies, calling for approaches to justice that push beyond colonial framings to account for these interconnected scales of life. Building on her previous community-driven work on gender, law, and violence, Sarah’s current research focuses on fostering justice across the nested scales of lands/waters, homes and bodies via engagement of coastal peoples’ embodied knowledge and land-based cultural practice. Her writing has been published in numerous anthologies such asKeetsahnak: Our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Sisters, as well as scholarly journals including Atlantis andCultural Geographies, and in numerous research reports, podcasts and other media. In 2014, Sarah was awarded a Governor General’s Gold Medal for her doctoral dissertation and was the 2017 recipient of the Glenda Laws Award for Social Justice from the American Association of Geographers in recognition of her social justice contributions.

Dr. Louise Chim is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Psychology. She teaches introductory psychology, statistical methods in psychology, and cultural psychology. Broadly, she is interested in finding ways to facilitate student engagement and learning in large classes and how cultural contexts and emotions shape these processes. Louise was awarded the UVic Social Sciences Early Career Teaching Award in 2019. Currently, she is also a casual developmental psychologist continuously learning about how her own child makes sense of the world.

Dr. Cindy Holmes is a queer, cisgender, white settler of English, Scottish and Irish ancestry who grew up in the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Attawandaron and Haudenosaunee people of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation in Guelph Ontario. She is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Victoria. Her interdisciplinary scholarship and pedagogy grows out of more than 25 years of community work and is informed by decolonial and anti-racist feminist, queer and trans theories, and the grassroots social justice movements from which these theories emerge.

James K. Rowe is an associate professor in the School of Environmental Studies. His interests lie with social movement strategy, which he approaches from the perspective of political economy and political ecology, and with a particular focus on the roots of injustice. He is especially con­cerned with the role of existential fears and resentments in the creation of injustice and the concomitant need for social movements to develop strategies capable of addressing these fears. He regularly teaches ES 200 (Introduction to Environmental Studies) and ES 407 (Mindfulness, Sustainability and Social Change). Since 2013, James has been working with UVic Faculty for Divestment to encourage the university to align their investments with their stated commitments to reconciliation and sustainability.

Dr. Violeta Iosub is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria. Before coming to UVic in 2018,  she taught chemistry to science majors, non-science majors and engineers for six years at the University of Calgary. Violeta was born and raised in Romania and came to Canada in 2005 on a student visa. She obtained her doctorate in organic synthesis from the University of Calgary.

After thirteen long and beautiful winters in Calgary, she moved to Victoria where the weather and the landscape make her smile constantly.

Dr. Ireh Iyioha is a Nigerian-Canadian writer of literary fiction, law professor at the University of Victoria, and the founder of the PEIF Fund Incorporated, a non-profit organization that offers a Service-Mentorship Exchange Program for young professionals invested in serving kids-in-need in Canada and selected African cities. Trained as an Attorney, her life's work focuses on social justice advocacy through teaching, research, service, and creative writing. Her creative works have appeared in several publications in North America, UK, Africa, and Europe, including in Transition Magazine, a publication of Harvard University at the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. Among other nominations, she has been shortlisted for the UK’s BPA First Novel Award and most recently, was longlisted for the CBC’s Short Story Prize for her work, Take Me Home with You – a story that imagines the experiences of a child of multi-racial heritage in Canada's residential school system. Dr. Iyioha has received over fifty national and international academic and non-academic awards, fellowships and honours for her work, including the World Congress on Medical Law Award from the World Association for Medical Law, the 2016 Canadian Immigrant of Distinction Award – Under-35 category – for outstanding achievements in professional and service capacities, and a 2017 Canadian Association of Law Teachers Award for a scholarly paper that makes a substantial contribution to legal literature. She was named to the Top 40 under 40 List of 2018 by Avenue Magazine and named as one of 150 Most Accomplished Immigrant Women in Canada. An engaging speaker and mentor, Dr. Iyioha serves as a mentor within the academic and business communities. Dr. Celina Berg is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Victoria (UVic) and has been here since 2019.  Celina completed her education at UVic with her graduate research falling in the intersection of the principles of software engineering and complex software systems, with a focus on parallel computing.  Celina spent 4 years as a tenure track Instructor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) teaching a range of Computer Science courses and developing curriculum to support active-learning within lecture leveraging videos and programming tools.  During her time at UBC she was heavily involved with supporting student first-year experience acting as a Professor in Residence and participating and leading university orientations.  In Celina's current position at UVic she has begun to develop curriculum to support the active-learning lecture approach she used at UBC.  Celina is also looking forward to being on campus with students and introducing some programs to further support student first-year experience.

Dr. Jeff Corntassel is a writer, teacher and father from the Cherokee Nation. He is an Associate Professor in Indigenous Studies at the University of Victoria and Acting Director of the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE). His research and teaching interests focus on “Everyday Acts of Resurgence” and the intersections between Indigenous resurgence, climate change, gender, and community well-being. Jeff situates his work at the grassroots with many Indigenous led community-based programs and initiatives ranging from local food movement initiatives, land-based renewal projects to gendered colonial violence and protection of homelands. He is currently completing work for his forthcoming book on Sustainable Self-Determination, which examines Indigenous climate justice, food security, and gender-based resurgence.

Dr. Susan Breau is a Professor and the Dean of Law at the University of Victoria, BC. From 2014-2018, she was the Head of the School of Law at the University of Reading, UK and has a distinguished record of achievement as a researcher, teacher and administrator. Dr. Breau's scholarship engages with multiple forms of law and legal orders, particularly in the law of armed conflict, international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international disaster law. She completed her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws and Masters of Arts degrees at Queen’s University. She practiced law in Kingston, Ontario, for almost 20 years before completing Master of Laws and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

waaseyaa’sin Christine Sy is Ojibwe of mixed ancestry from Sault Ste Marie and Lac Seul First Nation in Northern Ontario. Kaveh Tagharobi is an instructor in the Academic and Technical Writing Program and an EAL (English as an additional language) specialist at the Centre for Academic Communication at the University of Victoria. Dr. Peter Loock earned a PhD in Chemistry at UVic in 1996. He became a Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at Queen's University, and returned to UVic in 2020 as Dean of Science and Professor. In this episode, Dr. Loock discusses his experiences with rejection in academia, and what he's learned from it.

Dr Erin McGuire is an archaeologist and Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Anthropology. She's also a UVic alumna. Erin teaches ANTH 100 and a number of archaeology courses and is the Undergraduate Advisor for Anthropology. To get through the pandemic, she is taking walks, cuddling her cat, and talking to her counsellor.
