Ep 25: Jamel Shabazz (Photographer) featuring Karim Brown

Ep 25: Jamel Shabazz (Photographer) featuring Karim Brown

Ep 25: Jamel Shabazz (Photographer) featuring Karim Brown At a time when they are trying to erase black history education in this country, I have the honor of sharing a podcast episode of one of the greatest living photographers of the past 100 years, Jamel Shabazz. We will be focusing on his new book (among others things) "Albums" which if you haven’t gotten it, please do. It’s $50 and well worth it. No matter what they do in terms of trying to erase black stories and black history, they’ll never be able to erase the work and important archive of Jamel Shabazz! His book "Albums" is literally a Black History Textbook in a huge sense. This book features selections from over a dozen albums, many previously unseen, and includes his earliest photographs as well as images taken inside Rikers Island, all accompanied by essays that situate Shabazz’s work within the broader history of photography. Last thing I’ll say is that Jamel is honestly one of the most compassionate, spiritual, intelligent, authentic, kind, and passionate human beings I have ever met. Please get this book and all his past books. I want to thank Daniel Power and Sophie Nunnally for helping arrange this interview through Powerhouse Books who had put out Jamel’s books. Please support them if you buy his books, and in general. They put out such amazing and diverse books.   Please also get Leonard Freed’s “Black and White in America 1963-1965” at $28 dollars as a re-issue. Leonard's book and work has ben the main influence of Jamel's work and career. I also want to thank Karim Brown for being part of this episode. His work was being shown in the African American History museum in Philadelphia where Jamel did a lecture called “Love is The Message” a couple of months ago, and I got to see his amazing work. He is a younger photographer, and as a tribute to Jamel, who mentors and supports so many younger photographers, I wanted to include the amazing work, insight, and work. Karim's work has also been greatly influenced by Jamel, they both work in the same spirit of documenting their communities, and creating a historical archive for future generations to enjoy. Karim is also a teacher and archivist, and we talk with him about that, and his connection to Jamel! Lastly I have to say that getting to talk to Jamel has definitely been one of the highlights of my life, so I offer this as a gift to others to experiece it. Hope you enjoy it!   We start with Karim's (30 min.) then into Jamel's. Please listen to both episodes if you can. Please help support this project financially - Patreon memberships start at $24 dollars a year!  Our Mission Statement of Vintage Annals Archive Website, Instagram, and Vintage Annals Archive Outsider Podcast  Please listen to this episode so you understand the importance of the work we are doing and need support for.   We focus here on people and histories considered to be the other or Outsider. Our focus is to explore the uniqueness and individuality of folks and topics thinking and working in non-traditional ways. We present a unique form of interview, conversation, and storytelling in an organic manner and focus on art, culture, music, film, comedy, and more. We highlight stories and histories of communities of color, LGBTQIA+, Jewish stories, and many other minorities and subcultures. As these communities are being targeted and attack by the GOP, there is a strong need to share this content as its being taken out of our schools. This is my way of combating that through my years of educational experience as a Master's level special ed teacher. It is becoming non-sustainable and I just need some funds over the next year in order to apply for grants and such, or find sponsors. Ep 23: John Ross Bowie (Focus on Acting Series)

Ep 23: John Ross Bowie (Focus on Acting Series)

I had seen John over the years on TV and film and always enjoyed his work. I used to be a one on one worker with kids and teens with disabilities which drew me to to his work on “Speechless” which I found comically and authentically true to life. I enjoyed all of the actors but John’s performance felt very true to himself. I identify as an intuitive (like a poorer lazier more Jewish Rick Rubin) and can always get a sense of actors being true to them selves in certain roles. I met John through the Vintage Instagram that this podcast is named after and asked him to interview him. In order to prepare I listened to his memoir via Audible “No Job For A Man” and was blown away by his humor, insight, passion, authenticity, pop culture knowledge, his love and knowledge of Broadway Musicals, and his love and knowledge of Punk Music. This was exciting for me because most men of my generation can’t hold any conversations covering both Punk, and Broadway, yet alone can also bring Ronnie James Dio and Iron Maiden into that conversation and still make sense of it. I am also a year apart from John and just saw some interesting parallels in my own life. Let’s just say I was really moved by the memoir. To summarize I’d say it’s really hard not to like John Ross Bowie. He is just a humble, intelligent, and passionate person. He has spent much of his life pursuing this own loves and dreams. He has written two books. The other being a Deep Focus (name of the series) on the film “Heathers”. He has also written and produced a play “Four Chords and a Gun” which is an intense black comedy about The Ramones during a Drama filled 1979 recording session that led to the album “End of The Century” produced by Phil Spector. This episode falls more into the category of a great conversation that explores topics such as why no-one gets to hate on the musical Annie, Documentary Now and the Co-op episode, his show “Speechless” and why that show was one his best acting experiences, his punk band “Egghead”, and lastly the Philadelphia Band “The Dead Milkmen“ of which John is such a super fan. That knowledge lead me to invite him as a co-host to interview the band with me. I ironically I had already planned to interview them right after his interview so it just made sense. That episode will come out in about three weeks and John killed it! Please enjoy getting to know John Ross Bowie. You will be glad you did. I want to personally thank John as he went above and beyond to help create this special episode. Please check out John’s acting work, Music (Egghead can be found on many music services) and definitely get a copy of “No Job For A Man” which is a stellar memoir. It’s available at most book sellers. https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/No-Job-for-a-Man/John-Ross-Bowie/9781639362462 Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. Ep 22: Lennon Parham (Focus on Comedy)

Ep 22: Lennon Parham (Focus on Comedy)

Ep 22: Lennon Parham (Focus on Comedy) I’ve seen Lennon in a bunch of stuff over the years and always loved their work, but there was something in "Minx" to me that transcended her in my opinion to the level of comic genius and genius performer. She embedded her character Shelly with pure authenticity, compassion, and true kindness, that almost came through the screen. These real life qualities also became very clear while speaking with her. This episode focuses primarily on "Minx" but also digs into her days at UCB, being interviewed by Joan Rivers, working on Veep, Lady Dynamite, and more. I was also super impressed by the way she does her research and creates characters from real life experiences. Her work is definitely worth exploring, and please keep an eye on her future work as an actor, creator, and a director. She will only continue to do amazing work! Lastly, and most importantly, she tells the amazing story of making her insane fantasy scene in season one of "Minx". It involves making out with twin priests and the pope, and also features a horse! Ep 20: Ann Magnuson (Focus on Performance)  I am going to keep this short and  sweet. Ann Magnuson is a national hero in my opinion and it was a profound pleasure in meeting her and getting to know her for a few hours. I generally do about 6 hours of research per guest and I stopped counting after 12 hour of researching about Ann. She has such an interesting life that it was hard to stop.  Ann was very generous to us and having her is a huge deal! Thank you dearly, Ann is smart, fierce, kind, funny person. Ep 19: Arlene Gottfried Legacy Project - Part 1 (Focus on Photography/ Focus on Judiasm)

Ep 19: Arlene Gottfried Legacy Project - Part 1 (Focus on Photography/ Focus on Judiasm) All I can say is that I truly understand that Arlene Gottfried was the greatest photographer of here generation. If Robert Frank was the father, and Diane Arbus the mother, then Arlene is the first daughter of photography. I have been working on this since September and plan on releasing two more parts. My plan is to garner interest about a documentary art other form to work on a video documentary project on her life. Her work changed my life! It also took me about eight years to get this project going, so just don't ever quit anything that has meaning for you. Ep 18: Ed Askew (Focus on Music Series)

Ep 18: Ed Askew (Focus on Music Series)

Ep 18: Ed Askew (Focus on Music Series)  I was blown away after listening to Ed Askew's Album "Ask The Unicorn" about 15 years ago, which came out in 1968. Since then I've gotten to know his music a lot better and am a huge fan. He has such a pure and unique style. He fits into a few categories of music such as Psychedelic Folk,  Freak Folk, and Private Press Music. We spoke a few months ago after he unfortunately had a stroke, but is doing a bit better now. If you are in there NYC area, he has a show playing with Kath Bloom in Brooklyn Feb 26th at 7pm. It says it's a secret location so contact Kath or Ed for more details.     Ed Askew is a painter and singer-songwriter who lives in New York City. Born in Stamford, Connecticut, he moved to New Haven to study painting at Yale Art School in 1963 and took up, more or less, permanent residence there until leaving for New York in 1987. After graduating from art school in 1966, Askew was called up for the draft. Not feeling particularly enthusiastic about going to war at age 26 (the Navy tried to convince him that he should apply for officer training!), he looked for a teaching job and found work at a private prep school in Connecticut. It was while teaching he started making songs; he also acquired his Martin Tiple at this time. "I must have written 25 songs that semester; all of the material on Unicorn and possibly some stuff on Little Eyes." The singer-songwriter moved to New York for a few months n 1967 where he met Bernard Stolman of ESP Disk', who offered him a contract. Between 1968 and 1986, Ed lived, mostly, in New Haven; doing occasional shows with his band, and later doing solo shows there. Around 1987, Ed moved to New York City, where he continues to write and record songs, and occasionally perform. Ep 17: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink Photography Project 1972-73 (Focus on Photography Series)

Ep 17: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink Photography Project 1972-73 (Focus on Photography Series)

Ep 17: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink Photography Project 1972-73 with Bill Yates and Bill Boling  It was such a pleasure to chat with Bill and Bill about this amazing documentary photography project shot in 1972-73. Bill Yates shares his thoughts on this project below. This book and project is hands down my favorite book to own, and favorite images to post on the Instagram page. The images just resonate so deeply with so many people. There is something raw and universally understanding with the honest, kind, and dynamic images shot by Bill Yates over 7 months from 1972-73.     I had just purchased a medium format, twin lens camera and, as usual, I was out riding around looking for something to shoot. I happened upon an old wooden structure built in the 1930’s in the Six Mile Creek area of rural southern Hillsborough County, Tampa, FL. The sign on the building read "Sweetheart Roller Skating." The owner was just driving up. "Mind if I shoot some pics?" I asked. "Sure, but if you want some good ones, come back tonight –- this place will be jumpin'." That weekend in September 1972, I ran eight rolls through the camera. After that I photographed nearly every weekend until late spring of 1973. I was twenty-six years-old - Bill Yates    To Learn more about this project go to these links.  https://www.sweetheartrollerskatingrink.com https://www.instagram.com/bill_yates_photo/ https://falllinepress.com https://www.instagram.com/wboling More info on Vintage Annals Archive Podcast https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/vintage-annals-archive-podcast.html Website We have a ton of additional content on our website. https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/ Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. Ep 16: Joseph A. Gervasi (Conversations with Friends Series)

Trigger Warning" This episode talks about some adult content such as Psychedelics for those that might be in recovery.      Ep 16: Joseph A. Gervasi   I have known Joseph for over 15 years and very glad to call him a friend. He has done so many amazing projects such as being a part owner in one of the best cult and horror based (all on film) screening organizations called Exhumed Films. He did  this amazing interview and archive project called "Loud, Fast Philly" (http://loudfastphilly.com) He also is an amazing collector and has such a wealth of knowledge of all things vinyl, films, books, and more. He's a perfect guest for us for all of these reasons. This is part of a series called "Conversations with Friends" which are edited very simple with the intention to make the listener feel like they are in the room just listening. It's not meant to have perfect sound or detailed editing, but a more loose style of documentary raw audio recording. Ep 14: Jim Tozzi (Conversations with Friends Series/Focus on Artist Series)

Ep 14: Jim Tozzi (Conversations with Friends Series/Focus on Artist Series)

Ep 14: Jim Tozzi (Conversations with Friends Series)   *WARNING Episode is Explicit. There are some troublesome things said about certain Muppets and we do speak about one of Bert's boobs.     This is one of the first episodes that is released under the Conversations with Friends series of VAA. These are more informal and improvised conversations with folks that I consider friends and have known for years and who happen to be amazing artists, musicians, etc. They are more improvisational and more down and dirty. The editing and sound are a bit looser. These are more what I would consider our punk episodes and represent a certain rawness that is really behind our D.I.Y approach to this whole podcast thing.  I met Jim through the Vintage Annals Archive page and reached out to first take photos with him as I was a fan of his work on "Wonder Showzen" and his "Bert's Tit" graffiti work. After getting to know him and realizing we had a ton of common interests we had this chat last summer in NYC. The sound quality is a bit off but I think it lends to the aesthetics of what I am trying to do with this particular sub-series. There was very little editing done here as the goal is really to make the listener feel like they are in the room overhearing a conversation between friends.  Jim and I talk about Jim Henson, Sesame Street, SCTV, 1980's Flash Gordon, and Federico Fellini films.     Best way to check out and buy Jim's work is through his Instagram  https://www.instagram.com/jimtozzi/ He has a store for stickers and t-shirts and such here https://jimtozzi.threadless.com More info on Vintage Annals Archive Podcast https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/vintage-annals-archive-podcast.html Website We have a ton of additional content on our website. https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/ Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. Ep 13: Eddie Davis (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia) I met Eddie Davis in 1983 when he played my bar mitzvah. I am very proud to present this particular episode as I started this project as a way to share stories of old school Jewish musicians in Philadelphia. Eddie is the real deal and one of the most dynamic and talented musicians out there. We talk about how he got his start in music, working with Chubby Checker, knowing Dayrl Hall, and his infamous Tom Jones impersonation. QUIT YOUR JOB! QUIT YOUR FRIENDS! QUIT YOUR RELATIONSHIPS!

QUIT YOUR JOB! QUIT YOUR FRIENDS! QUIT YOUR RELATIONSHIPS!

This is a bit of a rant coming from a place of working for myself full time for the first time in my life.  The main idea of the rant is that being around people that don't make you feel welcome in relationships, friendships, and especially workplaces is so damaging to you. (Philadelphia Stories)  Richie Wexler Living Memoir - Gutbusters circa 1987 *Trigger Warning - there is some very slight making fun of chunkier kids but based on me being 17 and not knowing much. Ultimately this story honors kids who are larger as well. There is no way to tell the story out of historical context. There is also a short story about me being shit at baseball. Ep 12: Tracii Guns (Focus on Music Series/ Jewish Stories)

Ep 12: Tracii Guns (Focus on Music Series/ Jewish Stories)

(Jewish Stories)  Ep 12: Tracii Guns I refer to Tracii in this episode as the Richard Linklater of Metal, which I think is the best way to describe someone who embeds spirituality, philosophy into his life and music, and goes on wonderful tangents that make you understand how much thought goes into his everyday actions. One expects a certain flavor in terms of classic metal and Tracii provides that, but also goes against the grain and and incorporates influences such as Kabuki theater, Prog rock, Psychedelic music, and even covers a James Brown song. Welcome to the world of Tracii. There are not many other people in the world that started writing songs at 5 years old, had a band at 8, hung out with Slash in high school, became a famous metal guitarist by his early 20's, and started Guns and Roses and L.A. Guns! Tracii is such a down to earth impressive and thoughtful person. Please enjoy. We reference a podcast episode with Helen Russell that can be access below which greatly influenced this episode. I felt like I really knew and understood Tracii by the end of our chat and I hope you will as well. We talk about everything from Led Zeppelin, to Ronnie James Dio, to Psychedelic Mushrooms, to bad teachers, to bar mitzvahs, and the kind of stuff that Tracii collects. The Richie Wexler Living Memoir (and soon to be Broadway Musical)

I have been trying to write a memoir and shares stories of my life for the past 10 years. I struggled for years on how to prepare, create an outline, find comfy chair, and a 1000 more procrastination, so now I am just going to record these stories in no particular order, no particular timeline, and a probably ever changing format. Ep 11: Gabe and Herbie (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia)

Ep 11: Gabe and Herbie (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia)

*Trigger Warning - This episode mentions a suicide.   (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia) Episode 11: Gabe and Herbie. I have a talk with Gabriel Nathan who runs a unique suicide prevention out of an 60 year old Herbie VW. We talk about the dream the had as a young child, that he has now achieved, and came from seeing "The Love Bug" (on VHS) with his Aunt. And how the hell he bought his first Herbie car at age 14. This is a tough, but uplifting story, with a happy ending.     About Gabe and Herbie  Enter Gabriel Nathan, a mental health and suicide awareness advocate from the Philadelphia suburbs who drives a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle daily. Why is this car so important, you may ask? It’s because this specific Beetle is a replica of Herbie the Love Bug, the charming little car from the 1969 film “The Love Bug.” Nathan, who is a self-described “Herbie freak,” uses Herbie to attract attention to the these issues that plague humanity through the use of a rear window graphic, which reads “Drive out suicide, Stop suicide now,” as well as lists both the website www.DriveOutSuicide.org and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Many people may not know this, but Herbie the Love Bug is the only car to ever attempt suicide in motion picture history. By knowing this, Nathan knew he had to use Herbie, a car that many people recognize and love, to draw attention to suicide awareness.  Article About Gabe    https://www.inquirer.com/life/herbie-the-love-bug-suicide-prevention-awareness-gabe-nathan-20191204.html Short Film about Gabe and Herbie  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlQz0KDJJGg This film and road-trip is being generously supported by: Bud Clayman, OC87 Recovery Diaries, The Community Foundation of New Jersey, Dr. Frank Campbell of Campbell & Associates LOSSteam Postvention Workshops & Training, and the Reel Mind Film Festival. Ep 10: Jeb Berrier & Austin Pendleton (Focus on Theater Series)

Ep 10: Jeb Berrier & Austin Pendleton (Focus on Theater Series)

Ep 10: Jeb Berrier & Austin Pendleton  (Focus on Theater Series) We get to speak to two amazing actors who both have worked in stage and film.  Jeb Berrier  I speak to Jeb mainly about his role in the "Co-op" episode from Documentary Now, as I have been obsessed with "Company" and Sondheim much of my life. We then talk about his latest film "A Perfect Day For Caribou" in which he has a leading role and is a role very close to his heart. Lastly we hear a story about his near death experience in a foreign land. Such a nice guy and fine actor. His film is still looking for distribution but I am sure it will find a home soon, so keep an eye out for it.  Austin Pendleton As a huge Muppet fan and musical theater nerd, it was a great pleasure to speak with Austin. He is a very accomplished film and theater actor with hundreds of credits. We talk about his roles in "Fiddler in The Roof" and "The Last Sweet Days of Issac" and many of the actors and directors who have influenced him or that he worked with. Among them are Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, Jerome Robbins, Gretchen Cryer, and Stephen Sondheim. We also obviously talk about his work on the Muppet Show, and his current projects.  Music Credits  Intro Song - Richie by B.J. Snowden  Transition Song - There was a Light {Instrumental) by Stephen Bluhm  They are both stellar musicians and can be found below at their websites https://bjsnowdenmusic.com https://www.stephenbluhm.fun More info on Vintage Annals Archive Podcast https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/vintage-annals-archive-podcast.html Website We have a ton of additional content on our website. https://www.vintageannalsarchive.com/ Please Support If you'd like to support this project please join our Patreon. Ep 9: Paul Williams (Focus on Music Series)

Ep 9: Paul Williams (Focus on Music Series)

Welcome to Vintage Annals Archive Podcast Episode 8 (Focus on Music Series) All I can say is that seeing "The Muppet Movie" in 1979 at nine years changed my life. It put me on what I call my Kermit (and Jim Henson) path. When I heard the lyrics sung by Kermit as he stared directly into the camera.....  Life's like a movie Write your own ending Keep believing Keep pretending We done just what we set out to do Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and YOU! The course of my life changed forever, and it wasn't until 11 years later that I found out I shared Jim Henson's b-day. Which honestly would have been the person I would have chosen if I could have picked my birthday twin. And it wasn't till about 20 years later that I had another amazing Muppet moment and got to meet Frank Oz, and another maybe 10 years till it all came full circle and the universe brought me to Paul Williams. I can be tough on myself and honestly in many ways I am very new to interviewing people formally and have been very critical of my hearing my voice, and the words that come out. But in this moment talking to Paul, it all came together like magic. I interview people like Paul because I see them as teachers and sages. Paul shares such kindness, gratitude, and knowledge here. If you give this a full listen with an open mind, he will make a lover and dreamer out of you!    Also a huge thank you to Paul. My interaction with Paul set me on a course to finally completely live in a way to follow my dreams, not matter what happens. And when you meet your hero, and they thank you for what you do, it's such a humbling grand moment.  The segment that plays right before Paul's episode was a submission from Tillie Lams for our Jim Henson birthday celebration this past fall. It was such a good fit as a natural introduction to Paul's interview that we added it. Enjoy! Tillie's bio is below.    Tillie is a long time resident of Los Angeles working in the record industry. In her free time she loves roller skating, cracking jokes with her dog Hans (he doesn’t think she is as funny as she does), and figuring out how to play Ramones songs on the guitar without using power chords. Her perfect day would be a picnic with her two biggest inspirations, Kermit and Rowlf, with a portable piano and a banjo under a rainbow somewhere by the ocean. Ep 8: Meryl Meisler (Jewish Stories/Focus on Photography Series)

(Jewish Stories/Focus on Photography Series) We speak to renown Photographer Meryl Meisler. I don't want to give much away, so here are some cool things people said about Meryl's work Although I will say Meryl is a hilarious human, and that's a high bar for a person in my book! I will also say my life is much better with Meryl in it.  Rich Wexler  Vintage Annals Archive  "A clubby by night and a teacher by day, it was not until she retired in 2010 that she started to reopen her extraordinary archives" " Meryl Meisler captures the moments of intense joy and pure madness" "Whether they are improvised at home, in party rooms or in clubs, the dance floors are breeding grounds for characters on which she cannot help but aim the lens." "A joyful and crazy work. " "From bar mitzvahs and weddings to punk gigs and go-go bars, Meryl Meisler obsessively documented all walks of life in 1970s New York, finding ‘funny’ wherever she went." "Everything seems unreasonable and possible. And the photographer takes care never to widen the field of vision and “game” too much." "Driven by impertinence and humour, Meryl captured moments of intense joy and pure craziness" "Meryl Meisler captures the moments of intense joy and pure madness of the early days of disco and immerses us in a fascinating city and era" Info about Meryl can be found on her website  https://www.merylmeisler.com I highly recommend getting her books. Not only are they amazing but her first book I bought for like $30 five years ago is now worth $500, and for a good reason! Ep 7: Sara Sherr, Karaoke DJ (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia)

Ep 7: Sara Sherr, Karaoke DJ (Jewish Stories of Philadelphia)

(Jewish Stories of Philadelphia) This week, a fun yet revealing talk between two long-time Philadelphia karaoke DJ's, Sara Sherr & Dr Thunder.  "Sara and her company Sing Your Life are practically synonymous with Karaoke around here, and her nights are always packed and a lot of fun. By the time I started hosting weekly karaoke back in 2010, Sara was already well established and rightfully popular among singers who want something more than just sloppy-drunk scream-athons of the same 5 songs every week. That same year, she was named Best Karaoke In Philly by Philadelphia Magazine. It's always therapeutic trading war stories with Sara, one of a small club who know what it's like to be the center of the whiskey-soaked storm that is bar karaoke. Even if you're not a singer I hope you'll enjoy eavesdropping on two KJ's dishing about the pros and cons of handing microphones to everyone from rugrats to retirees." - Dr Thunder [GUEST] Find Sara Sherr at SingYourLifeKaraoke.com or https://www.instagram.com/singyourlifephillykaraoke/ on Instagram. She's performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Daily Show, been profiled by the BBC, and recorded songs with one of her biggest fans, Fred Schneider of The B-52's. As The Village Voice wrote, "The schoolteacher from Boston with a heart of gold, Snowden sings upbeat, Casio-driven singalong songs that could force a smile onto the stoniest of faces.
