I'm Greater Than the Stigma: A Recovery Testimony a conversation with Tina Locklear
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2018), “Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. They may mistakenly think that those who use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop their drug use simply by choosing to. In reality, drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will. Drugs change the brain in ways that make quitting hard, even for those who want to.”
Tina Locklear, MSW, LCSWA is featured in a Missions Mosaic article titled, "Getting to be Me,” by Shelli Littleton. Through Missions Mosaic, Ms. Locklear shared her experience of longterm recovery and the supports that provided her a strong foundation. In addition, Ms. Locklear is currently employed with a non-profit organization focusing on mental health and substance abuse.
The aim of this There is Power in Your Story podcast conversation is to discuss Ms. Locklear’s story of removing the mask and transitioning into longterm recovery.

An article titled, The Link Between Skin and Psychology, on the American Psychological Association website highlights a previous research study including a survey of "1,675 patients with rosacea — a condition that causes facial redness and related symptoms — 90 percent of respondents reported lowered self-esteem and self-confidence, 54 percent reported anxiety and helplessness, and 43 percent reported depression ... More than half said they avoided face-to-face contact."
It is important to place your health high on the priority list. Take steps to recognize whether what you put into (e.g., foods, drinks) your body is affecting your overall health, including skin health.
Joining us in conversation about putting health first and engaging in skin health awareness is Ms. DeAndrea Crockwell. Ms. Crockwell is a Master of Social Work graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and currently employed with UNC Health. Oftentimes, we may be unaware that our defense mechanisms (if any) are taking place. At times, certain types of defense mechanisms can be healthy (depending on the circumstance). On the other hand, there are defense mechanisms that may be unhealthy, especially when used too often. In turn, this can harm relationships or other opportunities. Pulling Up the Roots: Dealing with Anxiety and Fear of Rejection a conversation with Kenneth Joyner
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “Occasional anxiety is an expected part of life. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time. The symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school work, and relationships.”
Kenneth A. Joyner, MSW, LCSW has vast experience providing direct care services to individuals with mental health and development diagnoses. He has a passion and clinical interest in working with young men who have experienced significant trauma in their lives.
