You’re Gonna Get Peed On!: How Veterinarians Can Keep Their Dream Job from Becoming a Nightmare While Working Less and Earning More

The Veterinary Project is incredibly excited to present this bonus episode of the podcast in celebration of the release of co-host Dr. Michael Bugg's new book: You’re Gonna Get Peed On!: How Veterinarians Can Keep Their Dream Job from Becoming a Nightmare While Working Less and Earning More Dr. Michael Bugg, DVM, is a full-time real estate investor and veterinarian with over a decade of clinical experience in veterinary medicine. After graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, he practiced as a mixed-animal veterinarian before shifting to a small-animal general practice. Like many of his colleagues, Michael struggled with the unique demands of veterinary clinical practice. Overwhelmed and burned-out, he often felt as if his career was spiraling into a nightmare. He struggled to get ahead financially despite the long hours he spent at the clinic. His entire life was impacted by his career stress—so much so that his wife gave him the moniker Miserable Mike. This, along with working amid the early 2000’s financial crisis and witnessing once-retired veterinarians picking up shifts, motivated Michael to take back control of his life. In You're Gonna Get Peed On!, Michael shares smart solutions for the personal and financial struggles that no one warned you about in vet school. With this guide of practical advice and insights from veterinarians pulled from this very podcast, get ready to take back control from veterinary burnout and realign your life for ultimate joy and financial abundance-both inside and outside of the clinic. This conversation led by co-host Dr. Jonathan Leicht, takes you behind of the scenes of the creation of the book, as well as going deeper into areas such as: Why Dr. Michael Bugg decided to write a book The how-tos of creating, writing, editing, and publishing Mike's book "This is a really good book!" - Dr. Jonathan Leicht gives his seal of approval Challenges and tribulations along the way Who this book is for "Miserable Mike" The difference between just-thinking-about-it, to aspiring, to accomplished author: GRIT The teachability index: your willingness to learn and your willingness to accept change Beyond the book - what else is included in You're Gonna Get Peed On! Animal HealthLink is Transforming Telehealth and Triage, with Leilani Mustillo and Sean Neate

When lifestyle changes forced Leilani Mustillo to consider leaving Vet med, she connected with friend and fellow industry colleague Dr. Sean Neate to discuss a solution to both the career changes she faced and an opportunity to improve Telehealth. After a couple long brainstorming sessions, Animal HealthLink was born, with the vision and mission to redefine the veterinary emergency and after-hours triage model and be the veterinary industry standard for triage. Leilani, RVT  CEO  is a born and raised Albertan who completed the Olds College Animal Health Technology program in 2009. Since graduating, she has worked in specialty and emergency medicine in both nursing and management roles. Since 2015, she has been an instructor in Olds College's Animal Health Department. As an advocate for RVT advancement, she has a love for mentoring and training those who are new to emergency and critical care medicine, with her favourite topic being emergency triage. Sean grew up in Alberta and originally obtained a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta, but switched careers and graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary. After graduation, Sean completed a rotating small animal internship at a referral institution in Calgary. After spending several years in referral and emergency medicine, he moved to family practice. Sean is currently a practicing partner in a group of veterinary hospitals in Calgary where he enjoys a mixture of clinical cases and leading teams in their growing practices. In our wide-ranging conversation with Leilani and Sean, topics covered include: Leilani and Sean's career journey Creating a new path to keep involved in the profession Animal HealthLink's inception The benefit of Animal HealthLink's services for veterinarians and clinics Transforming the way telehealth is done Working within the regulatory framework in multiple States and Provinces How does Animal HealthLink work? What You Don't See on Instagram...

What You Don't See on Instagram...

Dr. Leicht recently had a conversation with previous Veterinary Project Podcast guest Elaine Clemenson in which she made the comment "don't believe everything you see on Instagram!" The comment stuck with Jonathan throughout the week and became the impetus for this episode. The reality is, what we see on Instagram is in most cases surface-level material designed to catch attention. It's important for us to remind ourselves that this is often the case, and that behind the photos, the carefully curated text, and the gloss and glamor is so much more than meets the eye. To drive this point home, Dr. Leicht and Dr. Bugg discuss a number of topics including: Mike's recent 10k run race and behind the scenes of his post-race state of mind The Gap and The Gain Pass / Fail mentality in vet med Peak performance vs. optimal performance How two pieces of contradictory advice can both be true depending on the season of life you're in We're online! Why the Heck is Everything so Expensive (and what can we do about it)?

Why the Heck is Everything so Expensive (and what can we do about it)?

Unless you've been living under a rock lately, you've definitely noticed the cost of things going up! Everything from gas to groceries, from utilities to clothing, life costs a lot more today than it did even a short 6 months ago.  In veterinary medicine we are not unaffected. Clinic owners, suppliers, and retailers are all feeling the impacts of rising costs.  Combined with rising interest rates, staffing shortages, pressures on wages, and the overall ability for customers to pay for ever-increasing costs of services, we're operating in very unique times.  In this episode, Dr. Leicht shares some of his opinions and insights on how inflation is impacting clinic owners, customers, and everyone involved in the value chain, while also sharing some strategies on what we can do about it.  Topics discussed include: The definition of inflation How did we get here? How inflation impacts veterinary medicine The rising cost of goods and supplies  Tough decisions with patients in a rising cost environment Inventory management  How clinic owners / operators can manage the rising cost environment We're online! Committed to Caring with Dr. Kwane Stewart, Founder of Project Street Vet

Committed to Caring with Dr. Kwane Stewart, Founder of Project Street Vet

A graduate from the renowned Colorado State University Veterinary program, Dr. Kwane has been a California practicing vet for 22 years. He has worked in nearly every part of the profession - honing his clinical and business expertise. His journey started in ’97 as an associate and emergency clinician in San Diego. From there he climbed the ranks quickly, becoming the Chief Medical Officer of Vetco Hospitals, Inc. Later he would take the reins of a struggling municipal shelter as County Veterinarian and reverse one of the worst euthanasia rates in the country. Most recently, he completed a six year stint as the Chief Veterinary Officer of American Humane, and Director of their legacy program, No Animals Were Harmed®, protecting over 100,000 animals every year around the globe on film and TV sets. Today he serves as the Chief Medical Officer and head Veterinarian for Papaya Pet Care. He has been sought for his expertise by many media outlets and major companies – including Disney, United Airlines and Sea World – for guidance to improve their animal care standards. He is known for his outspoken, compassionate, charismatic and genuine nature. Today, his career has evolved into another new journey. His true calling…helping pets and people in need. Many years ago, during a five-year tenure as a Shelter Veterinarian in a struggling, depressed area of California, Dr. Kwane began to form a true appreciation for those that struggle to afford health care for their pets. One day, on a whim, he headed downtown with some medical supplies. He set up a table near a homeless food bank, and invited anyone with a pet to be examined and treated at no charge. It was the most memorable day of his career. Afterwards, he made more consistent efforts to find Homeless people, wherever they were, and give free medical aid to their pets. Now, years later, his journey is now being chronicled on a new television series, called “The Street Vet”. It follows him as he travels the streets of California helping pets, and people alike, while retrieving some of the most remarkable and inspiring stories of sacrifice and hope. In this wide-ranging conversation with Dr. Stewart, we cover: The origination of Project Street Vet Working with the homeless and their pets Being committed to care The bond between pet and homeless person How working with the homeless changed the trajectory of Kwane's career Happiness within homelessness Hollywood or homeless: pet lovers are the same Funding veterinary care on the streets The role of pet insurance Making contributions - how can you do it?
