#33 📟 Surgical Innovation and Training
On the podcast this week is Dr Jonathan Sackier, MB, ChB, FRCS, FACS who is an internationally renowned surgeon, technology innovator and entrepreneur.
Trained in Britain as a surgeon and recruited to the USA in 1989 he helped lead the laparoscopic surgery revolution. As a Professor at George Washington University in Washington, DC, he founded, and funded the Washington Institute of Surgical Endoscopy, a center for education, research & innovation. He is a Visiting Professor of Medicine & Surgery at the University of Virginia and his activities in basic and clinical research funded by multiple grants have led to many publications, chapters and books. Jonathan’s collaborations with the pharmaceutical and medical device industry have resulted in technologies that have been brought to market with partners like Valleylab, Pfizer, Karl Storz, Applied Medical and Pall. In 1984 his team at Genethics discovered and patented a line of amniotic stem cells and then licensed the rights to a publicly traded British drug discovery company. He helped develop and bring to market the AESOP robot with Computer Motion, who had a successful IPO in 1997 and has also started a medical products contract sales organization, a locum medical agency and a communications company. He has consulted to many companies including Aventis, Cook, Integra Neurosciences, Bayer, Cryocath, Novartis and ConvaTec and has worked with the financial community on enterprise financing, mergers & acquisitions and due diligence.
A frequent commentator in the media, Jonathan has been a guest on radio and television many times to discuss various healthcare issues. In the mid-1990’s he hosted a television health magazine program “Health and Wellness” aimed at a senior audience for the Goodlife Cable TV network and served the communications company Spotlight Health with their celebrity featured outreach including the hugely successful Carnie Wilson web-cast which drove increased attention to bariatric surgery as an option for the management of morbid obesity.
Jonathan has served the National Committee of the Steppenwolf Foundation, is a Trustee of the First Star Foundation, the Virginia Hillel Board and previously chaired the Board of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation. #22 Simulation Training in Healthcare, Performing Under Pressure and Data in Training
This week Alex is joined by Russell D. Metcalfe-Smith, FHEA, MSc, NRP, CHSE-A, CHSOS, who is the director of the Women's Guild Simulation Center For Advanced Clinical Skills at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA. Russell leverages his years of innovative healthcare leadership within some of the world's largest hospital systems to help healthcare systems make bold strategic decisions, reduce costs and improve patient care.
As a senior leader, he has developed and put into practice transformative services in the international healthcare sector. From his early days as a registered paramedic and a head of resuscitation services in the United Kingdom, he learned how to maximize outcomes with few resources and little time. This fueled extensive research into more effective solutions, processes and procedures. He gained experience within-hospital acute care, mental health, primary care and emergency care in Europe—and more recently in the U.S.
He then delivered innovative training programs to international healthcare officials and clinicians, developing a world view of healthcare. Such exposure broadens perspectives, offering innovative approaches to change. At Cedars-Sinai, he provides the strategic, operational and program leadership for the Women's Guild Simulation Center, which brings experiential learning experiences to 25,000 physicians, nurses and allied healthcare professionals annually. He was involved with the simulation center from its early stages.
From day-to-day operational leadership and education, to fundraising events where he educates senators and business leaders on the center's efficacy, Metcalfe-Smith is devoted to making the simulation center transform patient care and discover new best practices and evidence-based research opportunities. He is one of the few people internationally to hold the CHSE-A certification demonstrating leadership in simulation. He holds multiple positionson international committees and boards.
Alex and Russell discuss the importance of simulation in healthcare, the need to collect unique data on learner performance and how organisation reacted to COVID-19.

#21 F-22 Stealth Fighter Training, Biomedical Engineering and Innovation with Dr Lance Black
This week Alex is joined by Dr Lance Black, MD, MBID who is the Associate Director of the Texas Medical Center’s TMC Innovation program.
Dr. Black served previously as Medical Device Innovation Lead, and draws on his extensive military, medical, and engineering expertise to support the resident companies of TMCx in developing innovative healthcare technologies.
After earning his B.S. in Biological Engineering from Louisiana State University and his M.D. from LSU Health Sciences Center of New Orleans, Dr. Black served in the U.S. Air Force and deployed overseas twice: first as Chief of Medical Staff for Manas Transit Base in Kyrgyzstan, and then as a Squadron Flight Surgeon in Okinawa, Japan.
During his time in the armed forces, Dr. Black helped to create modular medical facilities for civilian use, and designed and implemented safety protocols for F-22 stealth fighter pilots and their crews.
Inspired from his work with Wounded Warrior amputees, Dr. Black utilized his background in Biological Engineering to focus on the design and development of medical devices. Following his exit from service, Dr. Black received his Masters of Biomedical Innovation & Development from Georgia Tech, including a year in their Masters of Industrial Design program.

#20 NASA Astronaut Training, Space Walks and Exploration and Innovation Under Extreme Pressure with Dr Scott Parazynski
For the 20th episode of the human performance podcast Alex is joined by Dr. Scott Parazynski who is a highly decorated physician, athlete, astronaut, and tech CEO and US Astronaut Hall of Famer. He is a widely sought after keynote speaker on innovation, risk management, mentorship and leadership under extreme adversity.
Scott has lived and traveled all over the world, spending many of his grade school years in places such as Senegal, Lebanon, Iran and Greece. A graduate of Stanford University and Medical School, he went on to train at Harvard and in Denver for a career in emergency medicine and trauma.
In 1992 he was selected to join NASA’s Astronaut Corps and eventually flew 5 Space Shuttle missions and conducted 7 spacewalks. Mission highlights include a global ozone mapping flight; leading the first joint US-Russian spacewalk while docked to the Russian space station Mir; serving as Senator John Glenn’s crewmate and “personal physician”; and assembly of the Canadian-built space station robotic arm.
In October 2007, Scott led the spacewalking team on STS-120, during which he performed 4 EVAs. The final EVA is regarded by many as one of the most challenging and dangerous ever performed. The tremendous coordinated effort in orbit and on the ground by Mission Control has been likened to the Space Shuttle and Space Station era’s “Apollo 13 moment.”
In addition to being a diver and accomplished mountaineer, Scott is also a commercial, instrument, multiengine and seaplane-rated pilot. On May 20, 2009, he became the first astronaut to stand on top of the world, the summit of Mount Everest. As a life-long explorer, he and a colleague recently set the first bootprints adjacent the world’s youngest lava lake, inside the crater of Massaya Volcano in Nicaragua.
He is a prolific inventor/product developer, and serves on the Boards of several companies. He is Founder and CEO of Fluidity Technologies, focused on the development of revolutionary input devices powered by machine learning to intuitively move through physical and virtual space.

#19 Digital Research, Training and Improving Patient Outcomes Using Virtual Reality
This week's guest is Dr Brandon Birckhead, MD, who is a project scientist working on VR clinical trials at Cedars-Sinai. He is currently running the Digital Pain Reduction Kit study which is assessing the use of virtual reality therapy in those with musculoskeletal injury. This will be one of the largest randomized control trials within VR pain reduction research. He is also the co-director of the Virtual Medicine Conference along with Dr. Brennan Spiegel the founder of the event. One of the largest immersive technology conferences focused specifically on its use in healthcare.
In VR education, Brandon has collaborated with radiation oncologists at Moffitt Cancer Center to assess its use in medical education. While at the Medical College of Wisconsin he designed a VR breast cancer education program to help patients understand radiation treatment and why it is of use for their cancer. He then designed a pilot study which has garnered 40K of funding from the NCI.
Alex and Brandon discuss how technology can be used to improve patient performance and outcomes in healthcare, how remote tools including immersive technology are essential post-COVID and the importance of remote training and education.

#18 Simulation and Leadership in Defence Healthcare Training
This week's guest is Brigadier Toby Rowland, who is an officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps and who is currently Head of Defence Healthcare Education and Training at the Ministry of Defence. Toby has worked in roles ranging from operational planning to training delivery, interagency and international engagement to resource and risk management. On his journey Toby has developed a passion for transformative action as well as how to champion new projects and enhance existing systems. Toby's approach holds in focus the strategic perspective whilst taking time to understand organisational culture and, through engagement and consultation, the people that comprise it.
Alex and Toby discuss the importance of innovation and adaptability in delivering training, the role of simulation technology and the importance of building multi-disciplinary teams with strong leaders.

#16 Fencing, NHS Training and Recruiting Leaders
This week Alex is joined by Danny Ryan who is a former member of the Great Britain Fencing team. Danny currently works as a consultant at Russell Reynolds Associates, a global leadership advisory and search firm. Danny has particular expertise at the intersection of healthcare, education and technology, and is a trusted advisor to senior management as they navigate a rapidly changing industry landscape.
Danny is also a former Specialist Registrar in trauma and orthopedic surgery in the National Health Service, and previously worked in primary care, trauma centers and clinics across the UK. Danny holds a BA in experimental psychology and an MB B Chir in clinical medicine, both from the University of Cambridge, as well as a postgraduate certificate in medical education from Cardiff University. He is the President Elect of the Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe and a Young Subcommittee Member of the European School for Trauma and Orthopaedics, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons.

#3 Immersive Stories and Engaging Audiences with Dr Sarah Jones
In this episode, Nick speaks with Dr Sarah Jones about exploring and building immersive content and the concept of 'story living'. As well as talking about engaging audiences in this new medium, we discuss the importance of inclusivity, collaboration and experimentation in VR.
Sarah is Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media at De Montfort University. Her practice and research sits within emerging technologies and the development of immersive experiential films. Sarah has a PhD in this area and has recently advised the UK Government on immersive technologies.
Previously, Sarah was Head of the Birmingham School of Media at Birmingham City University where she established the HuffPost Centre for Journalism .
Sarah's research is "focused on immersive realities (VR/AR), experiential film within 360 immersive storytelling. I look to building experiences that allow for immersion, using whatever technology I can get my hands on. I am working to define a form of film practice around immersive experiential film and play with ideas of multi sensory VR to enhance presence in an environment. I have worked with Google on a Digital News Initiative project, in collaboration with the Coventry Telegraph, building a VR game around the Blitz. I am an Apple Distinguished Educator which puts me among a group of global leading educators experimenting and utilising technology in the classrooms. My approach is based on mobile global collaborative learning."

#2 Bob Stone - Human Factors and Life Lessons in Immersive Technologies
Nick catches up with Prof. Bob Stone at the Medifest Plymouth Conference to talk about the importance of Human Factors considerations in designing and implementing immersive technology environments. Bob is a technology 'veteran' and has been working in VR since 1990 and more recently collaborating with Nick in VR R&D within the NHS. In this episode, Bob shares a wealth of experience and lessons for best practises on the front line of development, as well as offering an honest opinion on the progress of the industry. More on Bob: Robert (Bob) Stone holds a Chair in Interactive Multimedia Systems within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham, where he is also Director of the Human Interface Technologies (HIT) Team. He graduated from University College London in 1979 with a BSc in Psychology, and in 1981 with an MSc in Ergonomics. One of the first Europeans to experience the NASA VIEW Virtual Reality (VR) system in 1987, and having established the first industrial VR team at the UK’s National Advanced Robotics Centre, following an appearance on the BBC’s 9 O’Clock News in January, 1993, he brought together (initially) 12 companies to fund the world’s first industrial collaborative project addressing the commercial applications of VR. In May 1996, Bob was elected to become an Academician of the Russian International Higher Education Academy of Sciences in Moscow and was, in 2000, accredited by General Klimuk, Director of Russia’s Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre as responsible for “introducing VR into the cosmonaut space programme”. Bob’s work has received numerous national and international awards for his Virtual Reality and Telepresence efforts, including, uniquely, three from the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, and, in 2011, the MoD Chief Scientific Advisor’s Commendation for his contribution to Defence Science and Technology.

#1 The Power of Conversation in Mental Health Training, With Tom Chapman
In this our first episode, Nick talks to Tom Chapman, an internationally recognised barber, ambassador, educator and founder of The Lions Barber Collective charity which is dedicated to raising awareness for suicide prevention. The idea for the charity, driven through the assistance of trained Barbers came after one of Tom's friend, Alex, took his own life. Unable to properly cope with the death of his friend by finding the correct charity he could form a part of, he decided to create his own.
Through the charity, Tom now trains people across the globe in supporting conversations and signposting around mental health and suicide prevention. In this episode we talk about this founders story, the importance of training and the art of conversation.
