THE Wartime Leadership Podcast

By THE Wartime Leadership Podcast

Resiliency looks different to everyone and manifests differently in all of us. We often focus on physical, emotional, and social areas but too often neglect the spiritual. People try to have a cookie-cutter approach and that doesn’t work on individuals w/ diverse perspectives. Neglecting any pillar can cause the foundation to come crashing down. We’ll explore what spiritual resilience looks like in our guests who are first responders, military, pastors, athletes, and many, many more. We will tackle the difficult questions and better define what spiritual resiliency can look like in our lives.

Episode 60: The Resiliency of 5-time Grammy award winning musician Roy “FutureMan” Wooten

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of 5-time Grammy award winning musician Roy “FutureMan” Wooten. Roy Wooten, also known as RoyEl, best known by his stage name FutureMan, is an American musician, inventor and composer.

He is best known as a member of jazz and bluegrass quartet Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, along with banjoist Béla Fleckharmonicist Howard Levy, and Roy's brother, electric bass virtuoso Victor Wooten. His primary instrument is the Drumitar, a guitar synthesizer he has customized to play drum and percussion sounds, but he also sometimes plays a standard drum kit and other conventional percussion.

Born in Hampton, Virginias, Roy was raised in a military family and traveled frequently, which is why he is influenced from many genres of music. This episode begins the series entitled “More Than A Mastermind May” where I am interviewing people I have the honor of interacting with on a weekly basis. We invest in each other with the desire of making each other better humans. Listen here for a Master Class on music and the art of creating rhythm as Roy describes how he finds spiritual resilience in the beats of life.

Episode 58: The Resiliency of Chicago Firefighter Traci Hill

Episode 58: The Resiliency of Chicago Firefighter Traci Hill

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Chicago Firefighter Traci Hill. While finishing up her master’s degree in Kinesiology she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Being a self-described "health freak", this news struck her as scary. Doctors told her she would be in a wheelchair the rest of her life if she didn't take medication. The diagnosis came on the heels of having become a Chicago Firefighter. Now she felt the pressure to not only put out fires at work but also the fires raging inside her own body.
She chose to figure out how to heal myself through food, exercise and eventually dealing with the emotions that were driving so many problems within. She learned that emotions create blockages in the body on a subtle level. The more negative emotions we stuff down, the deeper the wounds go.
Now using several techniques, she has learned how to allow healing to anyone as long as they are ready. The physical body is the result of vibrations that are inherent within each of us but also picked up from people and the environment around us.
Changes have led to a life of love, peace, joy and abundance.

Episode 56: The Resiliency of Second Generation Holocaust Survivor Max Friedman

Episode 56: The Resiliency of Second Generation Holocaust Survivor Max Friedman

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Second Generation Holocaust Survivor Max Friedman! This is the #1 most impactful episode thus far in 2023! This interview changed my perspective in so many ways. Max realized early in life that the world he lived in was very different from most others his age would ever experience. He was born in Sweden in 1950 to Sam and Frieda, Polish Jews who met and married there after their liberation from the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp and losing everyone they ever knew, including their first spouses and children. The family later emigrated to the U.S. in 1952, he grew up in Coney Island, across the street from the Ferris Wheel and Cyclone, but was never allowed on any rides.
As for journalism, Max attended Berkeley and got a master’s, but became impatient with journalism as a profession. He turned in his press pass while freelancing features and book reviews and sampling other writing jobs. Max worked for five years at WNET/13 (PBS) as a publicist for Bill Moyers' Journal and other programs, and then was responsible for editorial projects at the station. He spent the next 20 years learning about pharmaceuticals and writing about patients and scientists as head of communications at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Corporate life can have its ups and downs. So, when they told him to fire half his staff, he asked to be put on the list as well.
Most recently, Max spent five years researching and writing "Painful Joy", part memoir, part biography, part genealogical mystery, a story focused primarily on his parents, who somehow survived the camps and tried to restart their lives. It was a difficult and painful journey till the end. Like so many other survivors, they spoke very little about their past, though the horrors they survived were always apparent. So, he decided to finally find out more, about who they once were and what they might have become, and about their survival and its aftereffects. It turned out that their story was more complicated, more compelling, more heartwarming and heartbreaking than anyone could ever imagine. And as to the little they did tell their children, Max discovered that they were mostly
reimaginings of some complicated realities. He came to understand better the effects of their survival on his very own existence - and indeed on broader
themes that their lives and journeys reflected.

Episode 55: The Resiliency of Ken Gordon, Jr

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Ken Gordon, Jr! Ken speaks on the responsibility of men during and after divorce. He is an advocate for men and fathers, while calling on men to  lean into responsibilities and work actively to banish the narratives of the “dead beat dad”. He preaches that positive relationships and a father’s love for his children is built on engagement. Ken is inspiring, enthusiastic, and motivating.

Ken is a pastor, bestselling author, business executive, husband, father and a dedicated servant leader to his community and congregation. He and I sit down for a genuinely real conversation about his time attending The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) and the lessons learned from interactions with a diverse core of student demographics which led to him authoring “Bad Dogs – A Black Cadet in Dixie”.  We also discuss the situations that led to authoring the “Pancake Dad” and how it led to a 12-book engaged dad children’s series. THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Matthew Brackett with the Brackett Alliance: where leaders dare. He is a certified coach, Resilience Educator/Advisor, and Maxwell Leadership Speaker. Matthew’s diverse background includes time as a Catholic Priest (and educator) and choosing to serve full-time with the US Navy as a special Staff officer and Chaplain, even at an “older than normal” age. These experiences make him the perfect partner to help close the gap, find clarity, and balance the ebb and flow of life and business.
During this episode, Matthew and I have a brilliant conversation looking at his spiritual resilience and how it manifested as a Priest serving the Catholic communities he served throughout his years of service. We discuss the impact his service with the Navy had on him and his view of assisting people through tragic events of training, war, and everyday life. We dig deep into his global, ministry and military service as a collective of unique educational experiences that have helped him start the Brackett Alliance as an executive coach.

Episode 48: The Resiliency of BRiX HQ founder and CEO Julio Caceres

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of BRiX HQ founder and CEO Julio Caceres. Julio and his team discovered that over 11 million American owned 1 to 2 rental properties, but do not have the right insurance in place and force them into 2 choices; continue on their own or they can sell the entire property and get out. But there is another way…using equity from investors to fund properties and remain as part-owners. Brix allows investors to buy and/or sell a fraction of a property. The fractionalization of real estate is a newly crafted investment opportunity for new or seasoned investors.

Julio and I sit down for an amazing conversation about his definition of spiritual resilience and how it manifests through him as he builds his company. As BRiX continues navigating the capital formation stage of business, he must maintain a high level of resilience with heavy weight upon his shoulders. This episode concludes our series called “New Year, New Money.”

Episode 45: The Resiliency of Suicide Survivor Caryn Braham

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Suicide Survivor Caryn Braham. Caryn is a musician, writer, wife, mother (of 4), dog mom, cat mom, customer service professional, and low-key lover of mystery podcasts. She loves to pray, to sing, and focus on family development. Till recently she has not had a major desire to have a social media presence. Recently, she has begun dabbling with building a community and platform centered around readers. As she says, “I am always a work in progress.”
During this episode, Caryn and I discuss her definition of resilience as suicide survivor. “If I’m honest, resilience, at times, looks like finding reasons not to stay socially isolated and in bed for most of the day (work, husband, kids…). Other days I could jump out of bed and wrestle a lion and someone else’s wild animal of adversity (for them). I love people, and I love to help people. So if my life could resemble more of that, I’d find that resilient Caryn more often!”

Episode 43: The Resiliency of Invasion Ministries International

Episode 43: The Resiliency of Invasion Ministries International

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Invasion Ministries International. During a revival service in 2017, Murad Muhammad was called out in the meeting and fell out under the power of God, and as he fell to the ground, he heard the Spirit of the Lord say “Your ministry shall be called Invasion, the Church shall be called Invade and the Youth shall be called Impact” and part of the blueprint for how the ministry would launch was downloaded! The vision came in November 2018 when he was traveling with a Man of God named Paul Aloo, Founder of GloriousDestiny.org, he said “Murad it’s time for you to go downstairs and get your vision”. Murad then went downstairs of a church prayed, worshipped, and read the story of Nehemiah, how God told Nehemiah to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. After reading these scriptures he knew the mission of what God was calling him to do, Invasion was fully birthed. Throughout time the ministry has seen over 500,000 decisions for Christ, as God began to download the vision more and more, now we have launched Invasion School of Missions, an Evangelism School to train believers on Ministerial Excellence, their authority in Christ, how to lead people to Christ, Crusades and Outreach and Christian Leadership!

During this episode, I speak with 4 members of the ministry team. We discuss the events of life that brought them to the team and what they were searching for. These young missionaries travel the world learning how to share their testimony, market their story, and how to draw crowds to share with them the hope they found in Jesus.

Episode 41: The Resiliency of Dr. Victor Manzo

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Dr. Vic Manzo. Before going into Business and Mindset Coaching, Dr. Vic was a Chiropractor for the past 11 years and within the last 5 years, he was a specializing as a Pediatric Chiropractor. Like many others, he was taught to work hard, grind, hustle, put in the sweat equity, sacrificing time, money health and family and just continue doing, chasing dreams and eventually, one day, it will all be worth it. But, there came a moment in life where he realized this was not the only way to a desired life, nor to achieving success and so much more.

Dr. Vic was tired from being burnt out every 4-6 months.  He was tired of not feeling satisfied with my success and the massive impact in his community.  Dr. Vic felt unfulfilled. He decided to stop DOING and start focusing on the BEING side of things.

Dr. Vic had studied 10-12 different techniques on energy healing which taught him more than just the healing arts.  It taught him spirituality, studying Universal Laws, while learning more on how quantum physics is showing how consciousness affects physical matter. He started to look into his own limiting beliefs, the power of the subconscious, how his mind was programmed from an early age and understand the power of reframing one’s mind.

Dr. Vic ended up working less, making more, leading a more fulfilled and soul-filled life. Every aspect of life transformed to higher and higher levels.

He has now learned how to construct the ‘future self’ and utilize the science and ancient wisdom to achieve that.  Now Dr. Vic has taught this process to 100s of business owners in 22 different professions and 4 different countries.

Episode 40: The Resiliency of Kinesiologist and author Amanda Kate

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Amanda Kate. The podcast goes international but this time we are located waaaayyyy down under in Melbourne, Australia. Amanda grew up in Adelaide but spent some formidable years in London where she found herself working in Event Management and Shell International Petroleum Company. The corporate game fed her need for success yet there was so much missing in her life, and marriage. She needed to prioritize motherhood and her children.
During this episode, Kate and I have a rather humorous and compelling conversation about her take on spiritual resilience. She explains her journey in seeking to regain the missing portions of ‘self’ and what that looked like. Kate takes us on the journey to healing she endured from naturopaths, Chinese doctors, chiropractors and psychologists. Her emotionally abusive marriage had damaged her, and she wasn’t ready to let it beat her anymore. Additionally, Kate explains to us her training as a kinesiologist, and no, it doesn’t mean the same thing in every country…she’ll explain it better. (lol)
She is a Spiritual Seeker, a truth teller, and her inner Sage has an insatiable quest for knowledge, wisdom, and new ways of becoming.

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Kim Hamer. On April 16, 2009, Kim watched her 44-yr-old husband take his last breath. During his illness and after his death, she was amazed by the helpful ways their coworkers, bosses, friends, and family supported them. She started calling their kind actions "acts of love." After his death, Kim, noticed that managers received no guidance when navigating cancer or death on their teams. She saw how their lack of helpful tools and guidance was costly. It negatively affected employee engagement, increased turnover rates, and lowered productivity. Kim set out to change that. Combining her personal experience with her professional knowledge/leadership skills, Kim launched 100 Acts of Love, a consultancy that provides tools to help leaders increase team productivity, trust, and engagement when cancer affects the whole team member. THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Harriet Tubman’s 3rd cousin, David Alston. David’s story reads like a true Hollywood script. David was born Edward Bright. He was adopted at 7 months only to discover, as an adult, that he was not adopted but was abducted by his “adoptive” mother. David knew he was adopted but struggled with his true identity. She was reminded to act like God’s creation. She learned to ‘come back to what you know to be true and not what you feel’. YOU really do matter. Remember, truth over emotions.

Episode 17: The Resiliency of Vietnam War veteran, my hero, my father…Howard Coy

Episode 17: The Resiliency of Vietnam War veteran, my hero, my father…Howard Coy

THE Wartime Leadership Podcast: The Resiliency of Vietnam War veteran, my hero, my father…Howard Coy. This special Father’s Day edition is an interview 42 years in the making, literally. Growing up the son of a traveling Assembly of God minister was never easy. Many times, the food choices were limited and the pay was never very much yet the family thrived at taking care of each other. At a moment’s notice, the family would pick up and move to another location After graduating high school my dad sought stability during a time of war. He voluntarily joined the Air Force not wanting to take a chance of being drafted into another “less desirable” branch.

During this episode, Howard walks us through his definition of Spiritual Resilience and how it got him through 2 back-to-back tours in Vietnam. He navigates us through daily life while serving and the level of decision making, he was forced to make while feeding information directly to the White House. He covers a very low point that continues to affect him to this day and shaped his ‘why’ in helping veterans receive the full amount of benefits due to them. From coming home to a mostly ungrateful country to solidifying his legacy as my brother, Christian, and I both entered and serve(d) in the United States Air Force, this episode is the most meaningful one for me. Welcome home dad, welcome home.

So it's important for us to identify how we define success and identify the stresses we are going through." Having come to the U.S. as an immigrant and looking different then those that were around him, he walks us through how he learned English from Mr. Rogers to his success within the Civil Engineering career field. Joe walks through how stepping out of his career field made him a better person in dealing with his personal struggles.
