In the past few years, 7 crucial insurance carriers have either ceased property coverage in the State of California or severely reduced the coverages offered. On Friday, September 22, 2023, the California Insurance Commissioner announced key changes to the insurance industry in an effort to bring these carriers back.

The question is, will it work? Rex Frazier, President of the Personal Insurance Federation of California (PIFC), discusses these proposed ideas in detail and outlines what the “catches” are.

Globally, Extreme Wildfire Events (EWEs) are becoming more frequent. They burn bigger, at a higher intensity, and can quickly sprawl out of control accounting for 80% of total associated fire-damages and are increasingly contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions and worsening health impacts from pollutants.

Jay Stalnacker, Technical Lead for Wildfire with XPRIZE, has 27 years of experience providing government and private industry health, safety, disaster, and emergency management services. His experience in emergency and disaster management includes serving as Operations Branch Director for the Pacific Northwest Federal Type 1 Incident Management Team (PNW2). PNW2 is one of the only eight federal teams that respond across the world for complex disaster management. Mr. Stalnacker previously served in non-military government special operations and a member of the elite Federal Smokejumper Program and have served as a commissioned SWAT police officer.

Stephen Pallrand is the president of Home Front Build. His background in construction, architecture, architectural history, painting, and set design has aided him in pulling together the diverse group of artists, craftsmen, architects, and designers who work on the “CarbonShack” projects.

His father was a scientist/educator and his mother was an educator and patron of the arts. This exposure to art, science, and education led him to realize that building in an environmentally conscious manner is unimportant if you do not communicate the need and educate the consumer, for there are no green buildings, only green users. Our understanding of the environment is changing radically and so is the fate of the earth based on our actions as a civilization. Art and architecture have always played a critical role in representing the knowledge and culture of a period. Pallrand's use of the CarbonShack projects is to transform our shelters and homes into vehicles of change.

Steven Wynbrandt is the Founder of  Wynbrandt Farms, an urban mini-farm that became a gem of urban agriculture in LA. His career includes growing specialty greens for chefs and restaurants, designing custom compost solutions for farmers and land managers to create maximum soil fertility, teaching and consulting worldwide, and making the first and only Demeter Biodynamic certified compost in the US.

In 2019, Steven created The LifeCycler Compost Program for schools and organizations of all kinds to compost 100% of their food waste on their campuses. His programs and teachings transform individuals, organizations, and communities by empowering them to recover and expertly transform their food waste into a remarkable quality of compost that dramatically elevates soil, plant, animal, human, and planet health. It is Steven’s core belief that composting on campus with sound techniques is the single most important and powerful act that children and school communities can do to respond to climate change and create a healthier world for future generations.

Michael Schneider is the Founder of Streets For All, which is igniting the transportation revolution in Los Angeles, by fighting for bus lanes, bike lanes, and pedestrian improvements, in order to create a healthier environment and stable climate.

As a native Angeleno, it was built into Michael’s brain from birth that the only way to get around Los Angeles is by driving a car. And starting on his 16th birthday at 8am at the DMV, that’s how he got around. Until the financial crisis in 2008. With his day job as a tech entrepreneur getting rocky along with the economy, Michael had to make some lifestyle changes –including getting rid of his expensive car lease. After a couple years of borrowing his Grandfather’s classic car – which was in the shop more than it was usable – Michael started to experiment with getting around town using a bicycle, something that seemed “crazy” and “impossible” to his native LA brain. For the past ten years, Michael has gone all in, just getting around town on his bicycle – even to and from LAX, including with his wife and 3 kids.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

Today I interviewed Sister Loose Clarita and Sister Electra Complex of the Los Angeles Sisterhood.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a worldwide order of forward-thinking nuns, they are not religious, but moral and ethical by nature. They exist to promulgate universal joy, abolish systematic guilt and hate, through public manifestation and habitual perpetration. They are a 501C3 and raise funds in a grass root manner for the underprivileged.

They all volunteer without discrimination against creed, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation nor labels which divide us. They congregate and serve the communities they live in, where there is one nun all of us are.

https://www.ladragnuns.org/

Sister Loose Clarita, La mexicanita y la más bonita! (Shhhhh, don’t tell the other queens!) I was born in modern Tenochtitlan (Mexico city) and am the daughter of Cuatlicue (Serpent Skirt), female aspect of primordial creation life, death and rebirth and am also the sister of Xochipilli (flower prince), patron of homosexuality, male prostitution, art, dance, flowers, song and health. As a gender non-binary identifying being, my vows center on the representation and inclusivity of Latin-American culture.

Sister Electra-Complex is an anomaly. On one hand, her loudmouth often gets her in trouble, centering her phallic Freudian need for center-stage attention, they seek this in the very way they live their queer life—as an unabashed critique of their socialized self. On the other hand, she is the essence of amor—existing within stereotypes of femininity, a goddess of strength through love and empowerment.

Other Lives Studio is a concept hatched by friends and co-creators Betsy Flores and Kim Krempien.

Having worked in fashion around the world, they grew frustrated with the quickening pace of the fashion cycle and the toll their beloved industry was taking on the environment. The two resolved to use their industry design experience to tackle the problem and came together to inspire a new cycle for fashion.

Traci Park is the Councilwoman of the Eleventh District and is dedicated to making a positive impact in the community. She was raised in a family that highly valued hard work, and she became the first person in her family to attend college, where she earned degrees from both Johns Hopkins University and Loyola Law School.

Following a successful 20-year career as a municipal attorney, Park decided to take on a new challenge and serve as a representative for the residents of CD11 on the LA City Council. Her commitment to her district is unwavering, and she promises to be responsive to the needs of residents and stakeholders. She advocates for urgent and compassionate solutions to homelessness and is committed to keeping CD11 communities safe. She also fights for the Westside business community and works to increase affordable housing for workers on the Westside.

Park prioritizes sustainable policies that protect our natural surroundings, improve our economy, and mitigate climate change. She champions investment in workforce development that supports careers in green and clean-tech industries. Above all, Park is committed to hearing from and learning from all residents and business owners in the district to build a sustainable, resilient, and #Better11.
