What It's Like... to be Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe

On today's episode, I’m chatting with the actor playing Mick in BBC Three’s upcoming comedy-drama My Left Nut. Taking classes at the local drama school in Belfast, this week’s guest never anticipated a starring role in an on-screen show. Deciding to leave acting behind him to focus on school studies, it was a random email he got whilst on holiday with his friends, that decided a new fate for him. Catching a flight home to audition, it wasn’t long before he was thrown into intensive filming and well, he can tell you what happened next. Sharing how he navigated a script set around a personal life story and the topic of men’s health, here’s what it’s like to be Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe.

My Left Nut will be airing on BBC Three tomorrow, Monday 25th April. The series will run over three episodes released weekly and you can catch up on iPlayer for anything you've missed.

What It's Like... to be Ash Jones

On today’s episode, I’m joined by founder and CEO of Great Influence - the UK’s leading personal branding agency. The expert that’s building some of the internet’s favourite entrepreneurs, it all started for this week’s guest when he met a guy named Steven Bartlett. Joining the team at Steven’s first start-up, Wallpark, it wasn’t until they began cultivating what would become the world-renowned digital marketing agency, Social Chain, that he began to notice a shift in the way things were being promoted. Realising people would more readily buy into people, rather than a whole load of adverts and campaigns, he started honing in on the art of building public profiles. After seeing massive success with Steven, he decided it was time to try make it on his own. Taking what he'd learnt so far, he set up Great Influence. Handling the personal images of Umar Kamani, founder of Pretty Little Thing, Julian Hearn, founder of Huel and Oliver Cookson of MyProtein - to name but a few - he's lifting the veil on the personal branding buzz word that's spreading like wildfire across social media. Here’s what it’s like to be Ash Jones.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting with the founder of Sentidu Life Coaching, a method that specialises in mental focus and emotional mastery. Growing up in a turbulent environment, this week’s guest knows exactly what it means to turn a bad situation on its head. Overcoming eating disorders, a period of domestic abuse and bouts of depression, she decided it was her purpose in life to share her experiences in the hopes of helping others. Giving her tips on how to live life to the fullest, here’s what it’s like to be Elena Perella.

For more information on Sentidu, visit https://www.sentidu.com/

A few words from Elena:

"We live in a troubled world where anxiety, depression, and a lack of happiness are at higher levels than ever before. We need to shift our thinking and our attitude towards life. My mission is to help you become a New Human Being through recognising your limiting conditionings and break through them. Eventually you will master your thoughts and emotions, and live with a sense of fulfilment.

I am passionate about what I do. I coached myself through a severe depression, eating disorders and domestic violence and my experience has led me on a journey of discovery of how to break out all of these challenges. As a result I created a program to help people experience their own transformation and break free in the areas they feel stuck."

What It's Like... to be Shaan Mahrotri

On today’s episode, I’m joined by serial entrepreneur and founder of Cannamplify, a group of companies dedicated to making cannabis a part of everyday life. Born into entrepreneurship, this week’s guest was helping his parents with their businesses as early as nine years old. His ambitions as a teenager didn’t quite end up working out as he’d hoped following his time in the film industry being cut short, but in true entrepreneurial style, he quickly pivoted and found himself pursuing his many other side hustles. After successfully trying his hand at many industries, he became drawn to the world of cannabis and set to work creating what would become the centre of the European industry. Sharing how he overcomes challenges, rewriting the story around the drug and his definition of success, here’s what it’s like to be Shaan Mahrotri.

On today’s episode, you’ll be hearing from a champion bodybuilder and contestant on the vastest season of SAS: Who Dares Wins. Growing up an active child, this week’s guest entered her teenage years relatively healthy but a few decisions later, found herself excessively drinking, increasingly experiencing low moods and overweight. She tells me of her turning point, a visit to the doctors whilst pregnant, that changed everything for her. Being told she was at high risk of contracting diabetes, she knew she had to make drastic changes and so set off to the gym in search of a solution. Falling in love with feeling strong, she set her sights on bodybuilding and worked her way into championship after championship. Wanting to test her newfound strength and push her mental capabilities to the extreme, she signed up to be a contestant on her favourite TV show and weeks later was at the mercy of Ant Middleton and the Channel 4 producers. Filling in the gaps and sharing her advice after beating a ten year long depression, here’s what it’s like to be Tyler Clark.

On today’s episode, I’m sitting down with a wellness expert and one of Ireland’s first ever instructors of the Wim Hof method. As a teenager, this week’s guest had his sights set on professional basketball. Fully committed to pursuing his passion, he found himself deeply thinking about life in a way he couldn’t ignore. His questions became too loud and so he decided to hang up his trainers and go in pursuit of a different path altogether. Delving into the world of natural healing, he stumbled across Wim Hof whilst listening to a podcast. Captivated by the promise of a calmer, healthier lifestyle, he decided to research further and enrolled on the course to become an instructor. Combining powerful breathing techniques and cold water therapy, he completely changed his life around and dedicated his time thereafter to helping others. Sharing his take on the nature versus modern medicine debate, explaining the cold water phenomenon that’s taking over Ireland and the impact natural healing can have on mental health, here’s what it’s like to be  Níall Ó Murchú.

On today’s episode, I’m speaking with founder and creative director of French high-end streetwear brand, NASASEASONS and Prospect 100, a series of youth competitions set up to find the best in their fields. Growing up in the Tumblr era, this week’s guest has always been intrigued by the aesthetic and culture of his generation. What began as a collective of friends hosting parties in Paris, transformed into an idea of how they could capture a moment in time and eventually a streetwear brand that would end up on the heads of Hollywood and beyond. Stitching short, snappy slogans on to caps would take over his life for the next few years and little did he know he was in the process of building a concept that would attract the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce, Kanye West - and have his name mentioned in Vogue and Forbes to name a few. Sharing with me how he did it from start to finish alongside his other creative projects that include work with the Rolling Stones and setting up a competition series with a judging panel that boasted Steve Wozniak, here’s what it’s like to be Alexandre Daillance.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting with an IFTA-nominated broadcaster, journalist and entrepreneur. This week’s guest had no doubt about the path she wanted to take in life. From a young age being surrounded by music and the world of entertainment from her musician father, she found her comfort performing on stage. Following her interests, she enrolled on a one year broadcast journalism course and before graduation secured a role reading the AA Roadwatch traffic news on national radio. A job that would put her future career plans in motion, it was her determination to make it on TV with a televised traffic report that changed everything. On today’s episode, I’m sitting down with performance coach to Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and online fitness trainer. Growing up in Perth, Australia, it hasn’t always been a straight road for this week’s guest. Finishing high school he decided to follow his creative interests first and ended up working a 9-5 in civil structural engineering. A few years in, he realised something just wasn’t right. Taking a leap of faith, he gave it all up to pursue his passion and set up a personal training business. Remaining friends with the racing driver over the years, he never imagined his rapidly growing fitness career would land him a position as performance coach to one of the best competitors on the circuit. On today’s episode, I’m sitting down with pit lane reporter, tv presenter and host of Red Bull’s Inside Pass MotoGP vlog series. Growing up motorbikes weren’t always in this guest’s future. It was a visit to the track to watch her brother compete in the Stock600 European Championships that changed everything. Helping out the team that day with her managerial and language skills led to a permanent position and it was all engines go from there. Adapting to the new lifestyle of living racetrack to racetrack, she quickly fell in love. Hailing from the family behind JW Foster & Sons, the company that pioneered the running track spike, shoes were in his DNA. Returning home from two years of national service to a failing company, he decided to leave the family business behind and with his brother, set up Mercury Sports Footwear which would eventually evolve into the number one sportswear brand in the world - Reebok. A victim of severe bullying, growing up in Limerick doesn’t hold fond memories for this week’s guest. Attempting to take her own life fifteen times, the constant jabs from peers became too much for her and she left school before she could complete her final exams. Realising she had a love for the world of entertainment, she began filling her days looking for castings and stumbled across a call for models for a new reality tv show in Canada. What It's Like... to be Ardal O'Hanlon

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to an Irish actor and stand up comedian. Spending his childhood in Monaghan, this week’s guest didn’t grow up looking for a life in the spotlight. Quite shy and introverted, he loved to read and was extremely curious about the world. Going to college, he decided he wanted to change as a person and took up debating where he got his first taste of what stand up comedy could be like. Realising he had the ability to make his peers laugh, about six months after graduating, he set up one of Ireland’s first comedy clubs with three friends in the upstairs room of the International Bar in Dublin. Taking it as far as he could in Ireland, his next move was to London where everything changed. Being approached to audition for a new series, Father Ted, was only the beginning and a few stand up tours, further TV roles such as DI Jack Mooney in Death in Paradise - led him to make quite the name for himself on the world stage. Sharing his story thus far, here’s what it’s like to be Ardal O’Hanlon.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to the first ever legally blind D1 athlete. Born with no sight in his right eye and extremely limited vision in his left, this week’s guest has never let his disability get in the way of his ambitions. Discovering the game of football in seventh grade, it wasn’t until he was placed in the position of long snapper that he realised his full potential and became one of the stars of his high school team. Applying to college later on, he was offered a place at Tulane University where he made history as the first ever legally blind person to play college football. Not only did he pave the way for others with disabilities in his sport, he was exceptionally talented at his position and landed himself a stint as an NFL free agent. On today’s episode, I’m chatting with an Irish professional triathlete, coach and founder of the #prison2pro programme. Growing up in Darndale, this week’s guest had dreams of becoming a professional footballer. Despite being faced with massive adversity, at age 15 he was scouted to play in Scotland where he was offered a youth training scholarship. Just six months into his time there, his future was shattered when he received the call from home telling him his father had been sentenced to prison for manslaughter. Returning to Ireland, he found himself in an impossible situation, being left to care for his five siblings without any parental guidance. Under threat in the community, he turned to a local criminal gang for protection and to put food on the table for his family. In 2013, this led to a two year prison sentence for drug offences. Leaving prison and witnessing the death of his close friend, he realised it was time to break the cycle and look towards creating a brighter future for himself and his family. Surrounding himself with positive people, one day he went to watch a triathlon and well, the rest is history. Now a professional Irish athlete and coach, he is hoping by telling his story he’ll inspire others to change their generation too. Here’s what it’s like to be Ger Redmond.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to CEO and founder of Goss.ie. Stepping on to the stage at age six, this week’s guest has been in love with the glitz and glam of the entertainment world for as long as she can remember. Religiously watching award shows, she could’ve never imagined a few years down the line she’d be hosting her very own version in Dublin’s Mansion House and sitting shoulder to shoulder with celebs and media moguls alike. Having an immediate knack for journalism, it was no surprise the ambitious young entrepreneur spent her early twenties taking the Irish industry by storm, winning Showbiz Journalist of the Year at just 22 years old. Working for the Herald, presenting a slot on Xposé and writing features at the Mail on Sunday, it was after being denied an editor position in 2014 that she took a leap of faith and launched her very own entertainment news outlet, Goss.ie. Originally from Australia, it was continuous long haul flying that would eventually spark the brainwave behind his company, which he founded with two other friends. Sick of having to combine energy tablets with rehydration products to combat the knock out effect of almost 24 hours in the air, the trio saw a gap in the effervescent market and jumped at it. No science background between them, they enlisted the help of their Oxford-grad friend and the rest is a short four year history. Attracting the likes of Emirates, Liverpool and even the Grammy’s goody bags, it’s safe to say they’ve got off to a flying start. Becoming the number one seller on Amazon in their field and the first effervescent tablet to appear on an airline, it’s only the beginning for this young brand. Talking me through the whole journey, here’s what it’s like to be Daniel Cray.

What It's Like... to be DJ Makasi

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to an international DJ and Tomorrowland local. His story starts after a promising career in skateboarding didn’t work out following an injury. Losing sponsorship and any chance of getting back on the board, the young creative quickly found his other love - music. Playing in his first club at just 14 years old, he quickly dominated the Antwerp scene and made a name for himself. Securing regular club spots and festival gigs, it was a performance in Valencia that really got people talking. Making connections there, took him on an adventure to India where he found himself playing on the main stage of Sunburn Festival and ultimately touring the rest of Asia. Since 2012, he has been a local at Tomorrowland and today he joins me to share what the life of a DJ is really like, the ups and downs of one of the world’s most glamorous careers, the effects of Corona Virus on the entertainment industry and how he found his unique sound in a saturated market. From Antwerp, Belgium, here’s what it’s like to be DJ Makasi.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to founder of Her Sport, a media platform focused on bringing audiences the latest Irish and international women’s sports news. Involved in sports from as early as she could remember, this week’s guest has tried her hand at pretty much everything from ballet to soccer but it was swimming that captured her attention and made her fall in love with competition. Leaving the sport behind to focus on studies at age 17, it wasn’t until university that she rediscovered her passion for the pool in an attempt to widen her social circles and opened her eyes to something she had been fortunately shielded from for most of her life - inequality for women in sports. A topic that stayed with her after college, she decided to take her digital marketing skills and use them to create an online platform that celebrated women in sport and gave them a mouthpiece like never before. Two years on, Her Sport is making waves and growing by the day. Sharing how she did it, here’s what it’s like to be Niamh Tallon.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to one of Ireland’s favourite DJ’s and radio hosts. Tuning in to a show whilst studying one day, this week’s guest knew he had a love for broadcast from the moment he heard it. Calling up his local station asking for a slot soon led to numerous opportunities that would shape the stellar resume he’s created thus far. Working at stations such as Beat, Spin 1038 and Spin SouthWest, he spent many years stretching himself seven days a week between the radio booth and nightclubs and festivals where he made a real go at his other passion - DJing. Now almost ten years into his career and having managed to strike the perfect balance between performing at venues and hosting shows on Spin, here’s what it’s like to be Marty Guilfoyle.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to founder and CEO of Stampify, a social enterprise that allows users to fight world hunger by completing a loyalty card with stamps from partner businesses. Cycling home from work one day, this week’s young entrepreneur stumbled across a full loyalty card he had that resulted in a free burrito. Noticing a homeless man sitting outside the shop, it wasn’t until he was in the comfort of his home that evening enjoying the free food he could’ve easily paid for, that he had a eureka moment. Gathering together a group of college friends, he set to work on creating a non profit organisation set to change the face of our world hunger epidemic. Navigating pivotal roadblocks along the way, sharing thoughts on today’s pressures to achieve success at a young age and most importantly how he did it - here’s what it’s like to be Conor Leen.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to fashion designer and founder of AOIFE IRELAND. Noticing her love for fashion from a young age, this week’s guest wasted no time in pursuing her dream and enrolled in a university course to study fashion design the minute she left secondary school. Finding herself interning in New York for the one and only, Marc Jacobs, it was evident the up and coming designer had a bright future ahead and continued to take things further by moving to Paris following graduation, to fully immerse herself in the industry. Returning home to Ireland from the French capital, she began gifting pieces of her collection to Instagram influencers and from there, things started to take off. Focusing on using only sustainable Irish materials, her designs landed her on the runway of Paris Fashion Week last year, showcasing her Autumn Winter collection. On today’s episode, I’m chatting to CEO and founder of coffee company, Minor Figures. Responsible for the brand’s growth in Europe, he began to immerse himself in the continent’s coffee market and in 2014, stumbled upon a gap for nitro cold brew in London. Inspired by what he had seen on travels to Japan, Minor Figures was created with a focus on sustainability and sells only 100 percent plant based products. On today’s episode, I’m chatting to founder of The Naked Collective, a brewing company producing a range of natural, healthy beverages, built around your daily needs. Leaving behind a successful corporate career in the drinks industry, this week’s guest felt it was time to do things his own way and began building what would soon become Rye River Brewing Company. Discovering he no longer had a vested interest in producing alcoholic drinks, he sold up and set out to create a new carbon neutral venture that centred around the philosophy to do no harm and do good where possible. Mixing up plants, vitamins and water, The Naked Collective, found its home in Kildare and aims to enhance your body to suit every occasion - whether that be work, sleep, chill, play or a much needed immuno boost.
