Ep. 42 - Structure Your Business Architecture
Ep. 42 - Structure Your Business Architecture
I see a lot of separated efforts in organization, and model processes. Aren't these all connected activities that should be coordinated to create a *gulp* architecture that carries the load?
But what is a "Business Architecture" and how is it different from just an assembly of processes? Are these terms synonyms or is there more to a Business Architecture than that?
In this episode of the podcast we are talking about:
What is a Business Architecture?
Why should I care and where to start?
Align strategy to (business) architecture
Two process views - functional processes vs. End-to-End processes
Both process views are connected (big map vs. trip map)

Ep. 41 - Organizational Change Management: Jehane Adam
Ep. 41 - Organizational Change Management: Jehane Adam
If you have listened to a couple of podcast episodes you know that we are true believers in that the biggest "problem" in any architecture, BPM, or Process Mining project is not the technology or the processes and other architecture views - it is the people!
Getting people along with your change is the hardest thing to do and therefore we are happy to revisit the topic of Organizational Change Management on a semi-regular basis.
Jehane has worked as a Change Management and Business Transformation lead for over 15 years working on large multinational projects in multiple industries including financial services, consulting, manufacturing, sports and entertainment, healthcare, transportation and the public sector. She likes to focus on helping clients to drive lasting change and to support teams in working better together while achieving their aims.
In her down time, Jehane enjoys coaching, reading, continuously learning and spending time with her tribe in relaxing environments like the spa...
In this episode of the podcast we are talking about:
Jehane's background
Evaluating what you actually need to make org. change management real for your audience
The five "Whys" and the "WIIFM" (What's In It For Me?)
Meet people where they are, not where you want them or need them to be
Questions to ask when making a change
How to create a compelling story
Setting up for successful adoption
Partnering effectively with change managers
Common mistakes
What makes a good Org. Change Management professional

Ep. 40 - Strategy to Execution: Dan Marquez
Ep. 40 - Strategy to Execution: Dan Marquez
Developing a strategy for your organization seems like a mystery for a lot of people (and some organizations make a large coin from keeping that mystery), but in all reality it has a big part of “wild guesses” included. In this episode of the What’s Your Baseline Podcast we have Dan Marquez on the show, who knows a thing or two about this topic from his time at Accenture, Boston Consulting Group, or Google.
Dan is a passionate and eminently capable digital transformation professional, and also an expert in helping organizations understand and capitalize on the power of technology.
He specializes in adapting the enterprise strategies of his clients to find the real value opportunities and disruption resilience that can be powered by digital solutions. He also has deep knowledge of Operating Model and Culture design, supporting companies to drive the change necessary to make transformations sustainable.
In this episode of the podcast we are talking about:
Dan’s background
What is a “strategy”?
What to look for when developing a strategy (and which traps to avoid)
Explore the space by using an “intersectional strategy” method
How to implement a strategy – duality of leadership mentalities
PSA: style trumps substance
Most challenges boil down to cultural problems
Pursue an “L-shaped” transformation – focus on building foundational improvements while delivering value through narrow end-to-end use cases

Ep. 39 - Lean and Process Mining: Sebastian Kotulla
Ep. 39 - Lean and Process Mining: Sebastian Kotulla
A lot of people think that the work is done when they have a process be visualized in their process mining tool and a nice dashboard is built. Nothing could be further from the truth and our guest today, Sebastian Kotulla, talks with us about why that is. To bridge the gap between visualizing data/information to knowledge as the result of the analysis Lean techniques can be applied.
Sebastian has a strong focus on and passion for digital solutions to support business transformation such as virtual factories, computer vision, AI, process mining and engines. As Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Prosci Certified Change Practitioner he's used to run and consult in transformational initiatives from concept to successful implementation.
In this episode of the podcast we are talking about:
Sebastian’s background
Define - (DMAIC and how to apply this to process mining, CRISP framework, leading and lagging indicators)
Analysis (flow is key in Lean, different types of waste (TIMWOODS), Process Mining gives the reference points for the Control phase, Theory of constraints / bottlenecks, most of the problems are outside of the discovered process model!)
How to prioritize which process to choose
How to do the analysis - first look to define the problem (time analysis, Gemba)
Fishbone to structure hypotheses (manual cluster analysis) - Find the story in your analysis, five Whys to find the systematic problems
FMEA analysis risk analysis > risk simulation
Design of experiments - statical method on how to design an experiment and then make predictions from the result; understand input variables better
Advanced analysis
A practical project example

WYB Shorts 9 - A Holiday Special With Jeremy Voltz
WYB Shorts 9 - A Holiday Special With Jeremy Voltz
Today we have a special What's Your Baseline Shorts episode for you, that has nothing to do with Enterprise Architecture or Business Process Management.
However, we think that you will like it: our guest today is Jeremy Voltz, an indie-soul musician from Toronto, Ontario, who is gracefully letting us use his music for all intros, outros, and intermissions. In this episode we are talking with him about:
how he got into music (he has a PhD in Mathematics)
what kind of music he produces -
how his process works (well, at least a bit of BPM)
and what is next for him
You can reach Jeremy at jeremyvoltzmusic.com or via his LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremy-voltz-758118101/.
We're closing out the episode with the full Non-Christmas Christmas song "When You're Near" by him as a small token of our appreciation for you. Please enjoy the upcoming holidays with your loved ones and we will see each other in Season 4 starting in mid-January!

Ep. 37 - (I can't believe it is another) Ten things I've learned
Ep. 37 - (I can't believe it is another) Ten things I've learned
Welcome to another episode of our podcast. In the final episode of the final season for this year, we are talking about another ten things we’ve learned over the years:
How to do things
Transparency is more important than ever
Strategic alignment is key to your success
Sometimes you have to say “no” to requirements
Make clear from the outset how a project’s success is measured
Tools
BPM/EA tools are still too nerdy
Tools need to be simpler - how to get to information in three clicks or fewer
How to provide self-help resources
(Bonus) Do not google “how to create subway maps”
The discipline/industry
There will be a renaissance of forward-looking data-driven decision making (e.g., Simulation)
Process Mining will cease to exist as its own market in 3-5 years
Knowledge Management needs to be more in focus
Please reach out to us by either sending an email to hello@whatsyourbaseline.com or leaving us a voice message by clicking here.

Ep. 34 - Process Automation: Bernd Rücker
Ep. 34 - Process Automation: Bernd Rücker
Being the reasonable adult seems to be the parallel topic of this week's episode - even though the main topic is process automation. We were just so excited in our conversation that we got carried away
In this episode of the What's Your Baseline podcast we speak with Bernd Rücker. He is a software developer at heart who has been innovating process automation deployed in highly scalable and agile environments of industry leaders such as T-Mobile, Lufthansa, ING, and Atlassian. Bernd contributed to various open-source workflow engines for more than 15 years and is the Co-Founder and Chief Technologist of Camunda – an open-source software company reinventing process automation.
Bernd is also the author of "Practical Process Automation" and co-author of "Real-Life BPMN". Additionally, he's a regular speaker at conferences around the world and a frequent contributor to several technology publications. He focusses on new process automation paradigms that fit into modern architectures around distributed systems, microservices, domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, and reactive systems.
We are talking about these topics:
Bernd's background and why he never had a 'proper job', and how Consulting influenced the product development
The difference between process orchestration and process (task) automation
How to use BPMN for orchestration and how the orchestration engine, well, orchestrates automation at the end points
Automation with code and other means (RPA, low code/no code)
Client examples and what to do or not to do

WYB Shorts 8 - More process mining use cases
WYB Shorts 8 - More process mining use cases
A few weeks ago (in Episode 30) we spoke about how to select your process mining tool. And the conversation was so good, that we totally overran our planned time of an hour.
But instead of leaving our thoughts about use cases for process mining, that are currently not implemented in standard process mining tools, we decided to use them as a What's Your Baseline Shorts episode. We are talking about:
Customer mining
Processes in the ecosystem
Process mining for sustainability (add this to analysis, not only of one firm, but a chain of more organizations)
Process mining for ESG

Ep. 33 - How to inspire people for process: Mirko Kloppenburg
Ep. 33 - How to inspire people for process: Mirko Kloppenburg
We talk (a lot) about technology and processes here on the podcast. But what about the human side of Business Process Management? Do we just forget them and aim for the desired outcome no matter what? No, we don't ...
In this episode of the What's Your Baseline podcast we speak with Mirko Kloppenburg, who started his own company and project "New Process Lab" a few months ago after 20+ successful years at Lufthansa Group.
To start the New Process Lab, he linked the often fuzzy New Work ideas with tangible processes. As symbiosis of Process Management and New Work, the “New Process” approach was created. It adds a human-centric mindset to the already proven BPM tools and methods we know from the past.
The exchange about New Process has shown him that there is a great need to explore these ideas more deeply. To do this, he created the a platform to build a community, to perform experiments, and to share experiences. The NewProcessLab.com is driven by the purpose to empower you to rethink your process. In addition, he started the New Process Podcast to explore new ways to rethink processes and to share his journey with you!
We are talking about these topics:
• Mirko's background and his revelation that it is all about the people when doing process management
• The New Process principles: trust the people, involve the people, foster the development of people, give meaning to the people
• Inspire people for process by community building, focusing on experience design, and being a process influencer
• Examples of the New Process principles
• How to bring the principles to life
• The New Process lifecycle
You can find Mirko on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mirkokloppenburg/. His website is newprocesslab.com, and his podcast can be found here: newprocesslab.com/new-process-podcast.

Ep. 32 - Women in Process: Josèphe Blondaut and Gabriela Galic
Ep. 32 - Women in Process: Josèphe Blondaut and Gabriela Galic
Even given the fact that we are living in the 21st century, it is interesting to see that the percentage of women who studied technology or worked in the process industry actually decreased over time. Which is a sad state of affairs. So the question now is, how we -as an industry- can add more diversity and pick the brain pool of intelligent female professionals. In this episode of the What’s Your Baseline podcast we speak with two women who have taken things into their own hands and started their own initiatives to improve this situation.
Josèphe leads the ARIS Product Marketing team at Software AG, dealing with all topics around ARIS from global marketing campaigns, social media, public relations, events to “simple” release activities. She is also a newly certified as a Sustainability Manager from the Cambridge University, Institute of Sustainable Leadership, and wants to make things move forward here too. And last but not least, she founded and leads a regional sustainable gourmet food business from the greater #saarlorlux region available onsite in Saarbrücken, Germany and online here: www.saar-lor-deluxe.com.
In addition to this she also runs two podcasts/shows about “Passion for Process” and “Women in BPM”.
Gabriela is a Manager at Deloitte in NYC and is leading Process Mining projects, educating junior process mining talents, and identifying optimization potentials with process mining. She is so excited about process mining that she founded a new community “Women in Process Mining”, which targets women, girls and female leaders who work, study or research in the field of process mining.
We are talking about these topics:
Josephe’s and Gabriela’s background
Gabriela’s “Women in Process Mining” and Josephe’s “Women in BPM” initiative initiatives
Their motivations and how things got started
The experience they have in interacting with their audience
What it takes to build a community and where they go from here
You can find Josèphe on LinkedIn here: Josèphe Blondaut | LinkedIn. Gabriela can be found here: Gabriela Galic, M.Sc. | LinkedIn.

Ep. 31 - Security Architecture: Rick Smith
Ep. 31 - Security Architecture: Rick Smith
Updating the "plumbing" is not sexy. Looking at measures being put in place to avoid the worst case or deal with it when it happens is not fancy. Educating people and reminding them on being alert is exhausting.
However, the topic of Security and Security Architecture is one of the most important things to do, now that we outgrow the industrial age and move into the information age. In this episode of the What's Your Baseline Podcast we are talking with Rick Smith about Security Architecture.
Rick has over 18 years of experience in managing information systems to include, developing policies, portfolio management, writing programs and procedure development for information assurance programs. His various roles include a Network Administrator/Manager, Threat Analyst Subject Matter Expert, IA Strategic Planning and Database Manager. He is proficient in certification and accreditation policy and procedure including DoD policy, intelligence community policy, United States Postal Service (USPS) AS805, and NIST guidelines. He also has experience in cyber security architecture development for these same organizations.
Rick has developed and taught CISSP classes. He has developed his own curriculum and approach in helping candidates become a CISSP.
In this episode we are talking about:
What is Security Architecture?
Define mission, threat
Policies and SOPs need accountability, the need for education
Digital natives and their approach to security - leading to decentralized security architecture
How to approach threats
How to mature your organization’s security by using NIST’s Cyber Security Framework CMMC and security self assessments
Implement the framework

Ep. 29 - Open Source: Avi Ghosh
Ep. 29 - Open Source: Avi Ghosh
It is interesting to see how a "fringe idea" became mainstream within just a few years and everyone of us is using the outcome of it in our daily lives (mostly without knowing it - or have you thought what runs your car radio or the datacenter of your preferred search engine?).
But another aspect that still has to gain traction of the Open Source movement is the cultural aspect. How do you develop a SW that is used by billions of people in an all volunteer organization?
The key ingredient for this is to build a lively community and develop a culture that is a win-win for everyone involved. Something that I don't see in every organization (unfortunately).
In this episode of the What's Your Baseline podcast we speak with Avi Ghosh, who has more than a decade of experience from within OpenSource companies.
Avi is currently a senior Global leader at MariaDB championing the company’s industry leading database services offering, SkyServices. Prior to his time at MariaDB, Avi was responsible for all commercial Red Hat Consulting in North America's Oil & Gas / Energy Vertical, formerly serving in a similar capacity to the company’s South Central & Upper Midwest strategic customers. Possessing over 17 years of hands-on delivery experience, Avi has lead several Fortune 50 organizations in embracing best-in-class, specialized, innovative solutions across the enterprise with an open source mindset.
His passion as a technologist and servant leader has helped him in his mission to support customers with complex transformational problems- all backed by measurable metrics, open source data design and development standards, and AGILE open organization principles. All of Avi’s years of insight and study have lead him towards one definitive outcome: the culture of open source is a sure-fire way to ensure adoption follows any change in an organization. He challenges all technical thought leaders to celebrate the value (and power) of community- and to consider the fundamentally important paradigm shift open source ideals can bring to their organization.
We are talking about these topics:
What is OpenSource and the freedoms that come with it?
Why should organizations care?
Who owns co-developed OpenSource software?
Why do people contribute to OpenSource projects and how do these projects work?
What are the implications of doing things the "OpenSource way"?
What is the future of OpenSource?
You can find Avi on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/avigh0sh/.

Ep. 28 - Quality Engineering: Wings Liang
Ep. 28 - Quality Engineering: Wings Liang
A few months ago we had an initial look at how to manage and implement change in our conversation with Caspar Jans (in Episode 16) and we are continuing that series with an excellent conversation with Wings Liang about Quality Excellence and how organizations need to "shift left" and can gain competitive advantage by changing their perspective.
Wings helps organizations pave the road to the future by building high-performance teams, aligning organizational structure, shifting colleague mindset and changing the way people work, designing and streamlining end-to-end business processes, and implementing technology and digital solutions. Her work has advanced business strategy, increased organization agility, improved customer satisfaction, achieved cost savings and ensured regulatory compliance.
She is also passionate about gender equity, diversity and inclusion (D&I). Wings has organized, hosted and participated in large and small D&I events, programs and support groups. Her work has raised awareness, encouraged allyship, and elevated colleagues; resulting in increased female executive representations.
We are talking about the following topics:
Wings' background and very diverse experiences
What is QA (Quality Assurance) and QC (Quality Control)
How to transform from QA to Quality Excellence (QE) by shifting from "shift left" to "start left" and the value of this transformation
What skills are needed for QE and how people's behaviors need to change, and what this means for teams
The crucial role of test automation and how to manage the big beast of regression testing
How AI and ML change test automation

Ep. 26 - Communicating the value of architecture: Laurie Kelly
Ep. 26 - Communicating the value of architecture: Laurie Kelly
One of the biggest problems of architecture groups was (is?) that they are doing good work, but that will not be recognized by others. One of the causes for that is that their repository and artifacts have almost no visibility outside of their group. To mitigate this situation, we are speaking with Laurie Kelly about how to communicate the value of architecture in today's episode of the What's Your Baseline Podcast.
Laurie is the Global Director for Demand Generation at Ardoq, an Enterprise Architecture tool vendor. But she comes with a 25 year background in Marketing, where she held leading Marketing positions at PWC and Mega.
She is excited about the new tools for Marketing automation that allow to capture insights and ROI tracking which has not been available before. She uses this knowledge to help companies and organizations modernize their thought leadership and increase customer engagement, whether in-person or across the digital biosphere of web, mobile, email and social media. Further, she uses her passion to make a difference in her local community by engaging in organizations and projects that cultivate innovative learning.
We are talking about the following topics:
Laurie's background and ambition
Defining "success" for architecture, why it is important, who it needs to be successful with, and how to do this
Failures of communicating the value
How architects can enhance their perceived value - how to communicate, which channels to use, and when to communicate
How this can support Marketing to create an effective sales/practice tool
Laurie's immediate four tips to improve talking to non-architects
Laurie can be found on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laurienkelly/.

Ep. 25 - (Another) Ten Things I've Learned
Ep. 25 - (Another) Ten Things I've Learned
We made it - 25 long form episodes of the podcast (and 7 "Shorts" as well).
By popular demand - and because our statistics shows it - we are having "(Another) Ten Things I've Learned" episode. This time we are talking about three major areas:
How to measure your architecture and improvement programs
1. Architecture / BPM is not about the topics at hand (apps, processes, etc.) it is about people and how people interact with each other
2. When measuring architecture, make things SMART
3. Process Mining is the “next hot thing”, but it is not all and other, older process improvement methods still have their place
4. Process and Task Mining can’t shotgun a Solution
How to get your arms around (some of) the people aspects
5. There is a new interest in “Process” while “EA” is still stuck in technology
6. We have a responsibility to enable the next generation of BPM and EA
7. Enablement must include “why”
8. Internal communications cannot come with expectations of attention
How the "new reality" in which we work for two years by now will affect us practitioners
9. We need to rethink the role of “The Office”
10. Podcasts and videos are the new way to communicate the topics

WYB Shorts 7 - Process empathy
WYB Shorts 7 - Process empathy
People.
For better or worse a lot of the topics in EA and BPM center around people. These are the reasons why we do things (customers who pay for our goods and services), who does the work (employees and partners), or why processes and architectures even exist in the first place.
In this What's Your Baseline Shorts, we are talking about process empathy:
What does it take to facilitate the development of a human-centric process model?
What kinds of things should you think about, and when in the process?
What does it mean to have people-focused processes?
What are Customer Journeys?
How can we use the methodology of Customer Journey Mapping to make more human-sustainable processes?

Ep. 23 - How to create a business case
Ep. 23 - How to create a business case
Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Today's topic is about creating a formal business case as part of the change process.
Creating a business case document can be a challenge for someone who has not done that before, and one might think that this is a single-person activity. Nothing could be further from the truth - in our experience, a good business case document is the result of collaboration between multiple people in your organization (and vendors) that happens in multiple iterations until every stakeholder gives the "green light".
In detail we are talking about:
Why the need for a business case?
Where does business case creation fit into the change lifecycle?
High-level steps to create a business case
What information do you need to create a business case?
Who should be involved in making the case?
Example business case in the context of a value proposition
Tips & tricks to make an effective business case

Ep. 18 - Working with recruiters: Jason Jovanis
Ep. 18 - Working with recruiters: Jason Jovanis
Another episode of the podcast, and we are having a very interesting and entertaining conversation with Jason Jovanis about working with recruiters - either as a candidate, or as an organization who is looking for new talent.
Jason came to his job after 20+ years as a sales leader, who in 2018 had the crazy idea to quit the VP of Sales job and start a recruiting business.
He knows what it's like to need to hire people (lots of people). He's wasted his own time and frustrated others by interviewing people he shouldn’t have, and he knows what it's like to look for a job.
He's been treated like a product by some recruiters, so he decided to start his own company. His firm is a boutique recruitment practice focused on matching talented individuals with progressive organizations and great leaders.
We are talking about the following topics:
Get to know Jason (and helicopters)
Value that a recruiter brings to the table and how his approach distinguishes himself from other recruiters
Tips to step up your LinkedIn game where 95% of all search activities take place
The recruiting process, including the behind-the-scenes stuff

Ep. 15 - Strategic Process Consulting: Zach Bennett
Ep. 15 - Strategic Process Consulting: Zach Bennett
Setting up a strategic process consulting practice or firm in our industry is not easy. On the one hand side you have the large system integrators/Big 4 companies, and on the other side you have the tool vendors helping setting up internal practices and capabilities. Finding your niche in that setup and build a sustainable business is a challenge.
Showing an example of a successful enterprise, we are talking with Zach Bennett, who runs his own firm Visual Enterprise Architecture for over 25 years, in this episode of the podcast.
Zach is a senior executive leader with demonstrated success in delivering transformational solutions and working directly with senior business and IT leadership to achieve strategic goals. He also championed culture of continuous business transformation across entire organizations and established company Centers of Excellence for Business Transformation and Enterprise Architecture and execution of transformational programs and projects.
We are talking about the following topics:
Zach’s background
Where a small boutique firm in the process/EA industry can position itself (vs. the Big 4/SIs or tool vendors)
How external consultants bring in new ideas, but also provide the continuity in an organization when their people move around every few years
Zach’s perspective on where the market goes and what skills a newbie should develop
How to grow a consultant team and what to look for when hiring
Adding products to consulting offers
Trends and challenges in the future

Ep. 13 - Solution Lifecycle
Ep. 13 - Solution Lifecycle
Welcome to the first episode of our season 2! Today we are talking about the Solution Lifecycle in architecture - what it is and why it is important to you.
Architecture development and analysis does not happen in a vacuum, but are embedded in a lifecycle. New tools like Process Mining and Task Mining make it sound as if you don’t need other tools and techniques anymore, but quite the opposite is the case - traditional analysis techniques are still needed to support all phases of the solution lifecycle. We are talking about:
What is a "solution" and what are the layers and phases of the lifecycle (see also graphic below)?
Give examples of two analysis types and when to use which one best: Simulation and Process Mining
The value of this iterative approach and the cautions
The iterative nature of it and the impact on developing your overall architecture approach

Ep. 12 - Ten Things I've Learned
Ep. 12 - Ten Things I've Learned
Here it is - the end (of season 1 ... no worries, we're back in January 2022). In this episode we are mixing up the format a bit and are talking about the 10 things that we learned in 25 years of architecture and process management.
Approach / strategy segment
Let's talk about the bigger picture, the why and larger setup. What are the thoughts that get organizations started?
Why: You’ll end up paying for it somehow. End of the line in people or risk.
Don't do a "big effort upfront"
Develop and create in releases / have a release plan
Processes and architectures need to be measured
Organizational segment
Architectures win and fail with the people. If they don't want to cooperate or be involved you will fail.
It's the people, stupid
Do not separate areas of your architecture into different groups
Risk & Controls folks are your friends
"How-to" segment
Once you get started the task of developing an architecture seems daunting. This segment has a few tips to make it more manageable.
Start small but don't settle on the lowest denominator - choose a tool and have a minimum set of artifact requirements
Have the full lifecycle in mind and don't get distracted by the latest tech
When developing models do this in multiple iterations (esp. processes)

Ep. 11 - Governance Design
Ep. 11 - Governance Design
Ahh, "governance" - the topic that is boring to death and had complete EA groups being fired.
Love it or not, setting up the "rules of engagement" is still an important piece in an organization. And you can do it while having some fun when you remember the points that we are talking about in this episode:
Role of governance in architecture activities and how it was seen in the past
Archetypes of architects - governance as low/low activity (and hence the popularity of EA groups to focus on this topic)
Who should be involved when setting up the rules of engagement
Governance automation and how to implement it
How to design governance processes - push/pull communication, elements of the implementation, measure gov. KPIs
Organizational design for governance - three branches of governance (legislation / standards group; jurisdiction / ARB; executives / CoE), centralized / decentralized governance setups
Additional aspects: enablement, project tracking, workload balancing, content freshness, confirmation management, dashboards / hold participants accountable / workflow routing / visibility
Two client project examples

Ep. 9 - Task Mining
Ep. 9 - Task Mining
This episode is a "semi follow-up" to the last episode, where we talked about Process Mining - today's topic is Task Mining (aka Robotics Process Discovery).
Task Mining will bring clarity into what your users do on a procedure level, and can give insights into what might cause a "spike" in your analysis, or fill the holes that you might have in a discovered / mined process (for example when there are manual steps or steps in a system that does not create a log file).
In this episode we spoke about the following topics:
What is task mining (vs. process mining)? What is the information that one gets from task mining?
How to handle procedure-level in models
The "Big Brother" fear that comes with task mining, and how this is mitigated
Benefits of task mining
Steps to a useful application of task mining (how to get to a good analysis)
Hybridized setup of process and task mining - 5 steps to follow
Velocity and throughput analysis (frequencies and times) as a way to identify improvement and (RPA) automation opportunities
What/if analysis in a process/task mining tool vs. (proper) simulation in an architecture tool
Technical integration of task and process mining tools; benefits of using BPMN in mining scenarios
Experiences from a client project

Ep. 7 - Import of Existing Content
Ep. 7 - Import of Existing Content
Welcome to a new episode of your favorite podcast. The topic of today is to capture and import the vast amounts of existing content in your organization, and how to integrate this into your repository.
The import is one of the four major steps of an architecture tool implementation that we discussed in Episode 3.
Why bringing in existing content?
Concerns: age of content, correctness, type of storage (project vs. Enterprise Baseline), integration into dev method/SDLC, document naming/versioning
Size of import: number of models and complexity drive effort
Content format: how to map the information to models, objects, attributes
Create catalog of to-be-imported content (> Notion)
Five phases of import: preparation, initial import, create new model, normalization, quality assurance
Preparation: catalog, database setup, filter/permission considerations, tool mapping (Visio), tracking and reporting
Initial import: detailed look at what to import; automatically or manually import, use catalog for tracking, issues when importing
Create new models: BPMN Collaboration example, merge between different databases
Normalization: where does content go into structure (subprocesses, catalog models, etc.), object consolidation, adapting models to "correct" layout/standards (such as object naming)
QA: modeler QA vs. central QA, semantic checks, macros, automated workflows; release and publish, communication

Ep. 6 - Agile and Architecture: Mike Idengren
Ep. 6 - Agile and Architecture: Mike Idengren
In this episode of the What's Your Baseline podcast we are changing up the format a bit - this is the first of many interviews that we will have in the future.
Our guest today is Mike Idengren, who has 20+ years of experience combining EA, BPM, and agile solution development methodologies to unleash cross-functional teams' potential to deliver on digital business transformation expectations. He is a TOGAF-certified SAFe SPC and instructor, applying "agile at scale" -- going beyond theoretical teaching, and delivering results by implementing "just enough" tools, organizational structures, and processes.
We are talking about the following topics:
- Mike's background and how he got into Agile
- (Scaled) Agile as a discipline and its "big goal"
- The layers of Scaled Agile and the roles that architects play in each layer
- The value context: improving product quality, lowering risk together, and improving sustainability.
- How to implement Scaled Agile: leadership, start small, scale
- Doing Agile in a remote environment (vs. traditional "team is in the room" approach); which tools to use and which type of (consulting) resources to bring on board
- Governance and the LACE (Lean Agile Center of Excellence)
- Mike's patent-pending "Lean Agile Blocker Index" concept
- Lean Scaled Architect's offerings
Mike can be reached by sending a note to mike@leanscaledarchitects.com and you can learn more about his firm at www.leanscaledarchitects.com.

Ep. 5 - Notations, Notations, Notations
Ep. 5 - Notations, Notations, Notations
Welcome to episode 5 of the What’s Your Baseline podcast. Today we are talking about:
Definitions: Frameworks (structures), Methods (processes), Notations (languages), Reference Content (content)
How to implement these? This is part of the Technical Governance implementation phase; write it down in your EA Strategy document
Document your standards. When and how to change the standards (too often diminishes trust; org Change Mgmt / socialization is key)
Have your method and data define/support your standards so they are "fit for purpose"
Action-focused vs. function-focused notations
How to run process design workshops in multiple sessions
Geek-out over various notation examples (BPMN, DMN, EPC, UML, IDEF, ArchiMate) - observations on how they are used in real life
Use a common structure, such as TOGAF's ADM, to train users and make finding things easier for them in the future
