Many of you may remember the Great Recession in the United States, which lasted from December 2007 to June 2009 and was known as the worst financial crisis in the United States since the Great Depression in the 1930s. In honor of World Mental Health Day which falls on October 10, Tasha and I want to get very personal with you and share our stories of living with mental health issues and disorders. We know firsthand that life isn’t always easy, some of us had difficult childhoods, or survived traumatic experiences, or are feeling isolated because of the pandemic. Many of us deal with mental health issues or disorders at some point or another in our lives. Sometimes, these issues can be debilitating, other times they are frightening, and in many cases, we feel like we are alone and no one else will understand what we are going through. Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to overcome negative thoughts. A great way to look at them is as a form of exercise. Many of us do repetitive exercises to improve our physical health, and we can consider affirmations a form of exercises for our mind and outlook.

D., is a doctor in clinical psychology and a post-doctoral fellow at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation (HBFF). Currently, Dr. Manzanares is a mental health provider in the detox unit at HBFF. Previously, she has worked with patients at the residential, day treatment and intensive outpatient level of care. Dr. Manzanares has also worked in other residential treatment facilities, as well as in residential drug programs inside a federal prison. Within the private practice, has diversified her practice and has provided mental health services to sex offenders. Her dissertation was a literature review, exploring the efficacy of yoga as a treatment intervention for substance users. Dr. Manzanares mission as a mental health provider is to reunite family members with their loved ones.
