The American Legend Series Part 4 - John Henry
Today we talk about another legend in American folklore and try to find the truth and origins behind these larger-than-life tales. On this EP, we are looking into the steel-driving man John Henry. Apart from his folklore fellows, John Henry seems to have been birthed from old songs sung by railroad workers in the late 19th century... but was the subject of their songs, John Henry, an actual person? Quite possibly. Listen to find out more!

The American Legend Series Part 3 - Paul Bunyan with Chance Whitmore
Come and Join Chance and me as we go through the stories and tales of Paul Bunyan and his larger-than-life legends. As we sift through the information to find the truth behind the legends, we are sipping through some of Whiskey's greatest legends too. Enjoy the banter and booze, and let us know if you think Paul was FACT or FICTION. Cheers

The American Legend Series Part 2 - Pecos Bill the Super Cowboy!
The stories surrounding Pecos Bill are too good to be true... so are they? I will explore all of that and more as we continue to dissect American Folklore for facts, fiction, and fun! Cheers.

The American Legend Series Part 1 - Molly Pitcher with Alycia from Civics and Coffee Podcast
In this episode, I am joined by my wonderful friend and fellow history nerd Alycia as we kick off the American Legend Series. A series of shows dedicated to looking into American Legends and seeing if we can find enough evidence to give the big red FACT stamp OR... send back to the story books with the Fiction stamp.
Molly Pitcher was the name given to multiple women throughout the Revolutionary War. We are focusing on the two most prominent characters who may have earned this title. Both women found themselves on the battlefield, both saw their husbands go down, and both took up their spouse's positions and started fighting back. Join us for that story and more!
CORRECTION: In the EP I state that I was in the room when the first women infantry officers were "commissioned" - that is not true. I was in the room when they were "branched" or selected to serve as Infantry officers. I did not edit or remove that statement for transparency. Thank you.

"Pardon Me are you Aaron Burr Sir?" You are? Cool, put him cuffs boys! - The Aaron Burr Treason Trial
You heard that right! Aaron Burr, our beloved villain from the musical, once tried to take over a country and start his own nation. Lucky for us there were very few folks who liked him and even fewer folks willing to go down with him. But how did it and what really went down? Let's check it out! Cheers.

"What is your quest? I seek the Grail..."- A look into one of Christianity's most holy relics or it's biggest tale.
From dangerous trips through the catacombs in Italy to epic battles with the Black Knight to fighting Nazis in the deserts of Egypt to riding fake horses powered by coconuts that may or may not have migrated... the stories around the cup that Christ used at the Last Supper OORRR the cup that Joseph of Aramathea used to catch Christ's blood at the cross as he died, have brought about such grand tales, adventures, myths, legends, and some great movies! But is it real? Did it exist? Can it still be found? Or has it already been found and kept safe in a church in Spain... Let's grab some whiskey and "RRRRUUNNN AAAWWWAAAYYY" to see what we can find!
Whiskey: Benchmark Single Barrel

"Well Hello there..." Sorry, life is hard.
Hi Friends! I have missed you all so much. This is not a typical episode and not launching on a typical day... this is a reintroduction to me and a bit of an explanation for my absence for nearly a year. A LOT has changed! Jesus... so grab a drink and come sit with me and catch up for a few minutes. Regular episodes will launch every other Friday starting on November 11th. Stay Tuned! Cheers.

My new hometown! A brief History on Battle Creek Michigan.
Greetings friends! In this episode, I sit down and chat about our new backyard and the latest location of the #BOQLC. Battle Creek Michigan has a fun story to tell from the origin of its name to the crowning of its title of "Cereal City USA". The town served as a health and wellness and also concealed a stop along the Underground Railroad. Come with me as I sip some local whiskies and talk about this quaint little city with a big story. Cheers!

Clara Lemlich: Activist, Socialist, Bad Ass - with Alycia from Civics and Coffee Podcast
"Well behaved women seldom make history" Laurel Thatcher
The theme above can be heard throughout the conversation in this episode. I got the chance to sit down with one of my favorite history podcast hosts, Alycia from Civis and Coffee, and discuss a woman who immigrated to the US and took up the fight for her fellow immigrant women in the textile industry. Clara was feisty, strong and consistent throughout her life. Come join us and hear her story and more! Cheers.

Skydiving bro... A little chat about the history of Parachutes and Skydiving with Randy Connell
Welcome back, nerds. Today we will focus all of our attention and energy on jumping from airplanes and not dying. The item that will make that a reality was invented a very long time ago on distant shores. Although the war against gravity has yet to be won, parachutes do help to slow down the gruesome effects that can come from that weird pull to earth. I am joined by skydiver, history dude, and former Marine (yea I know, this show cost me like four boxes of crayons) to talk about the history of parachutes, the history of skydiving, and the folks who work hard to keep us safe at the USPA. Listen to know what that acronym means!

A conversation with a Warrior: A brief history of the US Army Special Forces with 1SG(R) Justin Crawford
We are back Nerds!! Sorry for the break, I was not in any headspace to record. However, that is in the rearview and I am coming at you with a great conversation with a very special guest. 1SG(R) Justin Crawford spent over 20 years serving the nation in the Army. 15 of those years were spent as a soldier in the elite units of Special Forces. During our chat Justin and I will talk about the history of Special Forces, the process to become one, and if Hollywood gets it right when depicting these soldiers. This is a long one... so grab some drinks, buckle in and enjoy my conversation with a warrior and American Hero. Cheers.

But Air Conditioning did much more than just cool the businesses and homes across America, it changes the culture and landscape of many regions throughout the nation. Come join me as we walk through the origins and evolution of the Air Conditioner.

The War of 1812 - America's Most Forgotten War
On this episode of Why Whiskey I am solo and drinking scotch! I also take a break from the booze to talk about the War of 1812 or the second war with England. I discuss what caused it, where it happened, how it happened, and who won... if there was a winner. This war was the conflict that saw the US get invaded and our nation's Capitol burned to the ground. It also inspired the writing of our national anthem. Come join me as I drink Balvenie and Lagavulin 16 and chat about a lesser-known fight. Cheers.

A brief history on the Star Spangled Banner
On this EP of Why Whiskey, I am solo and talking about the National Anthem of the United States of America. Written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, while on a British naval vessel, Key would witness the bombing of Fort McHenry and the beautiful flag that was waving over the fort despite the incredible firepower that was raining down on it. Since that time, the poem turned song had a bumpy ride through the country until being accepted officially as the National Anthem in 1931. Join me and sip some whiskey as we explore the song The Star-Spangled Banner.

Operation Paperclip with Jesse
BUCKLE IN FOLKS! THIS IS A LONG ONE! On this episode of Why Whiskey I am joined by my local tin hat manufacturer Jesse as we explore another government conspiracy. This one is much more fact than conspiracy though and reads like a science fiction novel. In the last days of World War II, the US and its allies made drastic moves to locate and secure German Tech, science, and the scientists responsible. The Cold War warm-up was happening and the US was 20 years behind the curve. The Project called Overcast would evolve into OP Paperclip and would lead to the hiring of Nazi scientists for government programs. In a story with so many twists and turns, we are drinking some strong booze this evening. Weller Full Proof, Nikka from the Barrel, and Lismore are on the menu. Come join us!!

As we wrap up the first eps of the "My Whiskey Story" series I brought in one of the reasons I got plugged into the Whiskey community on IG. The Charred Cask, a.k.a. Jeremey Chapline, is a digital media producer and photographer. He composes fascinating shots of the bottles we, as whiskey lovers, know all too well. I talk with Jeremy about his passion for whiskey and photography as he shares with us the adventures both of his passions have taken him. Please check out his work at either of the links below. Please stay tuned for more in this series later in the year as bring on more folks to share with us their shenanigans along the road of Whiskey. Cheers.

Broken Barrel Whiskey with Seth Benhaim
I got the chance to sit down with the owner, CEO, and Master Barrel Smasher (see video in link below) of Broken Barrel Whiskey Company for a couple of drinks and chat about his products, his history, the history of the company, and what Infused Spirits has to offer. We sipped the California Oak, the Heresy Rye, the Barrel Proof, two of the single oak series - Isle of Peat and Amontillado, and the newest offering from the company and the funkiest whiskey I have ever tasted, the Fen Walker. The Fen is something I encourage ALL of you to get out and try as it will play with your head in the best way! With extensive time visiting distilleries, on his way to nearly 150, Seth has had the chance to find the best product, distillery, and team to create his "unapologetically authentic" lineup. We talk about future projects in the works that may or may not include a mix-up of Mezcal and Single Malt Whiskey... not joking... Come join us for a great chat!

MKULTRA with Jesse Norris
Is there anything better than a little government conspiracy? What if it's not a conspiracy and the story is something straight out of a Hollywood movie? Well, that would be the story of MKULTRA. A government program, run by the CIA, in order to learn how to control the human mind and access its secrets through hypnosis, torture, and illicit drug use. I am joined for the first time in the new studio by my friend Jesse and he and I dig through these murky waters the whole time wearing our freshly crafted tin foil hats. Come join us for some fun conversation, good whiskey, and a story you have to hear to believe.

A Little History of the Mormon Church with Daniel and Erin
On this episode of Why Whiskey I am joined by Daniel and Erin Baum. These lovely folks both grew up in the Mormon Church and have recently decided to part ways with it. We talk about the history of the church, we look into some of the ancient and not so ancient beliefs, and I ask some tough questions about their personal journey in and out of the church. We at Why Whiskey respect all believers of all faiths and have no intention of making anyone feel unwelcome or unwanted. Enjoy.

The Why Whiskey? Christmas Special Pt. 3 - An American Christmas
In this episode, I am joined by a very special guest. Michael McGlynn has been a mentor, friend, and my pastor since the age of six...he is also my Father. My Dad and I sit down to wrap up the three-part series on Christmas and talk about the history of the holiday, lament on our best Holidays, and talk about how this one may be a little different. The holiday we celebrate today, although not as old or distant in origin as we think, is still worth our time and attention. This year is going to look different. No doubt. It's our hope and desire at Why Whiskey that regardless of the change in tradition the covid-year brings, you all are able to find peace, cherish those here and be well. Merry Christmas! - Ian
