Why are people watching this?

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Luther. Here’s the Synopsis: “A serial killer terrorizes London while disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.” Ashley hated the under-ice bodies. Dave had a lot of questions about the guy sitting in a helicopter in full scuba gear. Just got hung up on the unnecessary mannequins hanging from the ceiling.

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Sex/Life Season 2. Here’s the Synopsis:  “In the middle of starting over, Billie steps out of her comfort zone for a night of fun. Sasha rekindles an old flame and Cooper ignites a new passion." Despite being "ready for sex," Dave was underwhelmed by the non-sexiness of this show. Ashley hated this the the most of anything she's had to watch for the podcast! Justin was uncomfortable for the child actors.

This week, Justin and Dave watched We have a ghost. Here’s the Synopsis:  “The discovery that their house is haunted by a ghost named Ernest makes Kevin's family a social media sensation. But when Kevin and Ernest get to the bottom of the mystery of Ernest's past, they become targets of the CIA." Justin was happy that some producer smacked the magic "add Tig Notoro" button for this movie, but did not think there was any reason for the children to kick the police officer in the groin. Dave was amazed at the beautiful house and spent way too long pausing the movie to analyze the dimensions of the attic space, but could not understand why it wasn't insulated.

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched You. Here’s the Synopsis:  “Now living in London, Joe tries to lie low and resist old habits, until he's forced to tie up loose ends and bond with a circle of wealthy socialites." Dave enjoyed the show, but had a bone to pick with how they depicted the blood splatter during the body-dismemberment scene. Justin hated the tweed. Ashley saw a penis. 

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Your Place or Mine. Here’s the Synopsis:  “Debbie and Peter are best friends and total opposites. She craves routine with her son in LA, but he thrives on change in NY. When they swap houses and lives for a week they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.” Ashley hated the creeper gardener. Dave explained the Ancient Greek origins of platonic love. Justin was annoyed that nobody called out Ashton Kutcher for kidnapping those two boys.

What's the deal with eating crickets?

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Viking Wolf. Here’s the synopsis: “After witnessing a grotesque murder at a party in her new town, a teenager starts having strange visions and bizarre desires.” Dave could not figure out why the one-armed man didn’t help hunt the werewolf when the only thing he seemed to be any good at was hunting werewolves. Ashley couldn’t figure out why the first half of the movie existed. Justin completely misunderstood the ending of the movie and had to have it explained to him, like an idiot child.

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched You People. Here’s the synopsis: “A new couple and their families reckon with modern love amid culture clashes, societal expectations and generational differences.” Despite the controversy surrounding this film given its portrayal of race relations, both Dave and Justin were mostly upset at how easily the main character could start a "career" as a podcaster. Ashley, who comes from a professional background working on diversity, equity, and inclusion, was nervous at first that this would be a difficult film to tackle on the podcast, but the crew handled these potentially divisive issues with ease. 

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched JUNG_E. Here’s the synopsis: “In a post-apocalyptic near-future, a researcher at an AI lab leads the effort to end a civil war by cloning the brain of a heroic soldier -- her mother.” Ashley cried at the end when the nice robot lady hugged her daughter. Justin loved all the robot stuff, but was confused as to what anyone's motivation was, how (and why) they cloned people's brains, and why the main character appeared to be a Vulcan. Dave couldn't figure out what this crazy space war was all about even through there were multiple expositions scenes about it. 

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched That '90s Show. Here’s the synopsis: “In the summer of 1995, Leia Forman makes friends with a new generation of Point Place kids while visiting her grandparents, Red and Kitty, in Wisconsin.” Dave couldn't figure out the target demographic for this show, but eventually concluded that it was 8 to 12 year-olds. Justin got outraged at the bootleg scene, and declared the multicam live-audience sitcom format officially DEAD. Ashley loved Kitty and Red, but not too much else. Aron, who was brought on as a special guest because of his expected love for this show, did not, in fact, love it.

Is boycotting effective?

This week Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Ginny and Georgia - Season 2, Episode 1. Here’s the synopsis: “The kids spend Thanksgiving with Zion, who helps Ginny through an emotional ordeal; Georgia has an awkward dinner with Paul's parents.” Ashley determined that this show probably only appeals to old ladies who like soap operas. Dave argued convincingly that the little boy with glasses had no business being in this show. Justin could not figure out who anyone was, or why nobody was talking about THE MURDER that they otherwise glossed over.

If you're all so smart, what would you do to make a good Netflix show?

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched  Matilda. Here's the official synopsis:  “Matilda, an extraordinary girl armed with a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, dares to take a stand against her oppressive parents and head teacher to change her story with miraculous results.” We had two very special guests on this week's episode: musical theatre experts Carolyn and Matt. Carolyn enjoyed Matilda and praised the many subtle details that made it fun to watch, although she hated the cake eating scene. Matt had seen Matilda on Broadway and in Toronto, and was able to pull back the curtain to show exactly how and why musical theatre gives us the feels. Dave, despite not being a musical theatre fan, had almost only nice things to say about Matilda. Justin expressed his admiration for Tim Minchin and the insanely talented child actors.  Ashley got sidetracked by Irn-Bru. 

What alternatives are there to funeral homes when it comes disposing of human remains? *trigger warning: we talk about death and dead bodies. It gets dark. 

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Glass Onion. Here’s the synopsis: “Tech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case." Justin and Ranke both loved this film, and watched it twice in preparation for this podcast. Dave enjoyed the film's take down of modern culture's deification of fame, disruption, and wealth. Ashley wanted to gently cup Daniel Craig's butt. 

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. Here’s the synopsis: “A father's wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child.” Everyone appreciated the artistry that went into this film, although Dave could have done without all the nonsensical whale scenes. Justin had a real change of heart by the end of the film, having started out hating it but waxing poetic about the beauty of death by the end of it. Ashley loved Pinocchio's character arc (which Justin insists did not exist), as well as the cricket character (which Justin insists was superfluous to the story). 

This week, Justin. Ashley and Dave watched Troll. Here’s the synopsis: “When an ancient troll is awakened in a Norwegian mountain, a ragtag group of heroes must come together to try and stop it from wreaking deadly havoc.” Dave got excited by the Norwegian fighter jet. Ashley and Justin had an exciting disagreement as to how people would react to the emergence of a a giant troll in real life. Justin thought the movie did a disservice to the audience by leading them down a path that ended in the celebration of troll genocide. 

This week, Justin, Ashley and Dave watched Wednesday. Here’s the synopsis: “While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago.” Dave was curiously indifferent to this whole Wednesday thing. Justin, on the other hand, loved Wednesday and had much to say about Romania, the appeal of aloofness, and why he thinks his daughter should adopt a Wednesday attitude . Ashley also loved this show and binged the whole thing as soon as it came out. She also compared it to Twilight, which Justin hated.

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched 1899. Here’s the synopsis: “Immigrants on a steamship travelling from London to New York get caught up in a mysterious riddle after finding a second vessel adrift on the open sea.” Kate joined the team this week to explain her thoughtful, zen-like technique for watching Mystery Box shows without going insane. Dave had his past trauma with Lost rekindled and tried to warn the others to stop watching 1899 now before they lost their minds. Justin yelled a lot. Ashley enjoyed the 19th century class struggles depicted on screen. 

With the passing of Remembrance Day in Canada and the approach of Black Friday, it is truly beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there in the stores. With local folks still feeling the effects of disease, war, and disastrous natural phenomena, what would you suggest as the perfect gift for families this Christmas? ... besides the gifts of free roadside advice, podcasts, children's albums, and live theatre. Those are givens. 😉

This week, Justin and Dave watched Falling For Christmas Here’s the synopsis: "After losing her memory in a skiing accident, a spoiled heiress lands in the cozy care of a down-on-his-luck widower and his daughter at Christmastime. Lindsay Lohan falls head over heels into hijinks — and love — in this warmhearted holiday rom-com with Chord Overstreet." Our Christmas movie expert Kailin joined the gang this week and used her considerable intellect, charm, and powers of persuasion to convince everyone that this movie was high-concept reverse-Cinderella story. Justin was convinced it was a horror film about an abusive misogynist who spent the entire film gaslighting Lindsay Lohan. Dave felt the same, and was further flummoxed by the completely unnecessary magical Santa that was shoehorned into the film. Ashley was not sure who the target audience for this film was, but was at least sure that it was anti-millennial. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Enola Holmes 2. Here’s the synopsis: "Enola Holmes takes on her first case as a detective, but to unravel the mystery of a missing girl, she'll need some help from friends -- and brother Sherlock.” Everybody loved Enola! But instead of talking about the film, Justin spent a lot of time talking about Victorian toilets. Dave expressed his love for David Thewlis (again). Ashley expressed her desire to inject Benedict Cumberbatch.

Feeling bummed by the seasonal hyper hype. My question is simple and likely terribly complicated: “Why do people feel they HAVE TO give (and receive) gifts at Christmas time???”

This week, Justin, Ashley, and Dave watched Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Here’s the synopsis: "An ex-vet buys storage locker contents to pay off debts, but buys more than he bargained for when he purchases a lot owned by a strange old man." Everyone enjoyed this one - despite (or perhaps because of) the many unanswered questions that it left behind. But more importantly, you need to listen to this podcast episode so you can listen to Dave auction off a cow. 

This week, Justin and Dave watched The School for Good and Evil. Here’s the synopsis: "Best friends Sophie and Agatha find themselves on opposing sides of an epic battle when they're swept away into an enchanted school where aspiring heroes and villains are trained to protect the balance between good and evil." Both Dave and Justin were left agitated and bewildered by this film. Neither of them could explain the ambiguous (i.e., non-existent) moral framework that should have anchored the film's exploration of the tension between good and evil. Dave ended up quoting Nietzsche toward the end of the podcast, so you know things got bad. Justin laughed out loud when the protagonist was impaled by a giant pen. Dave liked the flaming dragon tattoo, but hated the mystical hole. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Curse of Bridge Hollow. Here’s the synopsis: "A man and his daughter must team up to save their town after an ancient and mischievous spirit causes Halloween decorations to come to life and wreak havoc." Dave and Justin both agreed that the anti-science stance taken by this film revealed something deeply troubling about American society. Ashley was sad that this Disney-adjacent film was not Disney enough. Nobody liked the scene with pumpkin diarrhea. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Luckiest Girl Alive. Here’s the synopsis: "A writer's perfectly crafted New York City life starts to unravel when a true-crime documentary forces her to confront her harrowing high school history and question the choices she made as a teenager." Everyone was flummoxed by the sheer number of traumatic plot points that the main character had to endure. Dave was concerned that the protagonist received no attention from a mental health professional at any point in this film. Despite its many flaws, Ashley appreciated the film for trying to tackle (too many?) important subjects. Justin was unable to follow any dialogue and feared he was having a stroke while watching this film. 

Is it best to cut toenails with scissors, nail clippers or a penknife?

This week, Justin and Ashley watched Dahmer. Here’s the synopsis: "The story of one of the most notorious serial killers in the United States, largely told from the points of view of his victims." Dave was missing this week and Ashley and Justin were lost without him. Justin was adamant that this TV show should never have been made. Ashley appreciated how creepy it was. Both of them had high praise for the actors and acting - especially Shaun J. Brown who played Tracy Edwards, and Richard Jenkins who played Lionel Dahmer. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Do Revenge. Here’s the synopsis: "Popular Drea wants revenge on her boyfriend for publishing her sex tape, and exchange student Eleanor is haunted by a rumour. The two teenagers team up to take action against their tormentors." Dave couldn't figure out what the film was trying to tell us via its portrayal of shallow, hedonistic teenage protagonists. Justin worried that this film was funded by Big Oil. Ashley doesn't understand Gen-Z fashion or slang. 

How do you prepare for an extended power outage?

We’ve been hit by a hurricane! We haven’t had electricity for almost a week, which means we haven’t been able to record the latest episode. So stay tuned for next week when we watch and discuss Do Revenge! And keep your fingers crossed that the power comes back on so that we can finally take a shower. Three unshowered podcasters is in a tiny recording studio is a terrible thing.

This week, Justin and Dave watched Cobra Kai, Season 5, Episode 1. Here’s the synopsis: Daniel's new ally-turned-housemate tests Amanda's patience; Miguel searches for his father in Mexico; Terry starts to transform Cobra Kai. Dave and Justin barely remember the names of any characters or their relationships or what has happened in the past 4 seasons or who belongs to which dojo, but it doesn't matter. They are two dudes from the 80s and they just love watching nonsensical karate fights. This show does not take itself seriously, and neither do Justin and Dave. It's a (karate) match made in heaven. Like a moist pig at the county fair. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Love in the Villa. Here’s the Netflix synopsis “A newly single woman learns the Italian villa she reserved is double-booked, and she'll have to share it with a cynical stranger.” Justin loved this silly little romantic comedy despite all its flaws. Ashley and Dave didn't care for it. At one point, Dave said "the whole thing made my skill crawl." Although Ashley did have a crush on the shave-chested male lead. Incidentally, since recording this episode, Dave has been hired by the Verona Official Tourist Board as their official spokesperson. 

Would decriminalizing drug use along with controlled distribution/purity assist our health care system or bring new sets of problems?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Echoes. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: Identical twin sisters Leni and Gina decide to swap their lives. However, there are dire consequences when one of the twins goes missing, causing both of their lives to rapidly fall apart. For reasons that seem to escape Dave and Justin, Ashley really enjoyed this. Dave likened it to an 80s soap opera in terms of how ridiculous it was. Justin was pretty much annoyed with everything (especially the fact that the entire first episode was spoiled by the official synopsis) except for Karen Robinson. 

What would happen if Canada, USA and Mexico merged to form one huge country?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Next 365 Days. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “Laura and Massimo's relationship hangs in the balance as they try to overcome trust issues while a tenacious Nacho works to push them apart.” Nobody enjoyed this one. Ashley laughed out loud at Massimo's sexy faces. Dave watched the entire film at 2X speed and it was still too slow for him. Justin is convinced that the script for this film only contained three pages of dialogue. 

Relationships are hard. They get extra hard when there are ‘deal breaker’ scenarios. I’ve been with my significant other for just under two years. We are committed to each other and have strong feelings for each other but have a long distance relationship. We’re both career minded folks. The biggest issue besides distance (a 2hr drive, so not a huge distance but just enough to get in the way) is children. At the start of the relationship I was very much leaning against children, they were also unsure leading towards ‘No’. As things moved on, I became a firm ‘no’ a ‘hard no’ I don’t want children of my own, I don’t want to adopt children. They have flipped the script and is now a ‘hard yes’ and wants to have a baby very badly. I’m not even sure we can even manage to live together let alone raise a child, or conceive one. Even if all the stars aligned and the distance was removed, I know in my heart and rational brain that being a parent is not something I want any part of. I like other people’s children, but I do not want my own. The question at hand is, is this relationship salvageable or must I be the villain, and end the relationship?

This week, Justin and Dave watched was Never Have I Ever, Season 3, Episode 1. Here’s the Netflix synopsis “At last, Devi is dating her dream guy, but some catty gossip makes her worry about taking things slow and Nalini urges Kamala to rethink a decision.” Dave does not really enjoy the overly-slick and rapid-fire dialogue, making it difficult for him to connect to the material. Justin, however, connects more deeply with the material than would be excepted for someone in his age demographic. Matt comes in smoking hot with a number of hot-takes on the show, and creates a hilarious new trivia game! Tory knows her stuff, is is there to provide everyone with Indian name pronunciation tips. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Sandman. Here’s the Netflix synopsis “When the Sandman, aka Dream, the cosmic being who controls all dreams, is captured and held prisoner for more than a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.” Dave expresses his undying love for David Thewlis. Ashley loved the skinny pale emo guy.  Justin has a lots to say about sleeping sickness.  

What do you think would be some effective ways for "the small man" to boycott or speak out about corporations and their practices AND what sort of topic would mobilize one to do so (e.g., Texas and the abortion law)?

This week, Dave, Justin, and Ashley DIDN'T watch Keep Breathing, the #1 show on Netflix. We were just too swamped because of reasons. This episode is Justin's explanation and apologies and pleas for Lin-Manuel Miranda to come on the show for some reason. 

At what age is appropriate for kids to start cooking for themselves?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Gray Man. Here’s the Netflix synopsis “When the CIA's top asset -- his identity known to no one -- uncovers agency secrets, he triggers a global hunt by assassins set loose by his ex-colleague.” Justin was bored by all the action, recycled plot lines, and hedge mazes. Dave was reminded how much he loved The Bourne Ultimatum. Ashley revealed her crush on Richard Dean Anderson, which has nothing to do with this film but came up anyway. 

This week, Justin and Dave watched Resident Evil. Here’s the Netflix synopsis “Fourteen years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by infected creatures while being haunted by her past, her father, and what happened to her sister, Billie." Dave did a deep dive into corporations as portrayed in Hollywood films and concluded that there is not such thing as a "good guy" corporation. Justin has a bone to pick with the idea of zombie brains "rewiring themselves". 

Do you think there could ever be a "Terran" dollar? And a Terran pay scale as well as Terran tax scale so all people can move about freely and have one money system?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Sea Beast. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters - and make history to boot.” Ashley loved the seafaring lingo. Dave sees this film as a commentary on human ignorance and our ruthless war against the natural world. Justin thinks this film is a thinly veiled take-down of the patriarchy, toxic masculinity, and an oil-and-gas-loving Western oligarchy that has been destroying the Earth’s ecosystems through unfettered expansionism and natural resources exploitation rooted in a Judaeo-Christian worldview that places mankind at the centre of the universe. Also, everyone thought the animation was real good. 

how to be a helpful but safe bystander? & so WHY do bystanders sometimes fail to help when they see someone in danger? survival mode? frozen? scared? do you help? call 911? are there a set of rules for when and when not or ways to do it? Best case scenarios? does gender play a role?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Stranger Things, Season 4 Episodes 8 and 9. Here’s the Netflix synopsis for Episodes 8 and 9: "Nancy has sobering visions, and El passes an important test; back in Hawkins, the gang gathers supplies and prepares for battles. With selfless hearts and a clash of metal, heroes fight from every corner of the battlefield to save Hawkins and the world itself." Mila joined the group and impressed everyone with her Stranger Things mega-knowledge. Dave was flummoxed by the amount of chest hair on Steve. Justin was unsure how the actor for Vecna peed while wearing the Vecna suite. Ashley loves everything.

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Umbrella Academy, Season 3, Episode 1. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “After averting doomsday in Dallas, the siblings return to a very different academy, now ruled by the powerful and hostile Sparrows.” Ashley was super bummed about the protracted dance montage scene. Justin relived a traumatic experience of being peed on. Dave wished they had quit after season 2. 

How would you start a conversion of a yard to farming like the old days due to the cost of groceries? And would the barter system possibly work? For example, trading veg for dairy ...moose or venison for fish etc.

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Spiderhead. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “Two inmates form a connection while grappling with their pasts in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by a brilliant visionary who experiments on his subjects with mind-altering drugs.” Dave really enjoyed the airplane in this movie. And the car. And the boat. Ashley has a bone to pick with Chris Hemsworth's involvement in the production side of things. Justin was annoyed by most everything in this film for some reason. 

Do trees feel pain?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Hustle.  Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “After a down-on-his-luck basketball scout discovers an extraordinary player abroad, he brings the phenom back without his team's approval.” Ashley loved this film despite knowing nothing about basketball and the Philadelphia “72ers”. Justin was shocked that a sportsball film with Adam Sandler in it was in fact a joy to watch. Dave was a huge fan of the opening credits. 

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Interceptor.  Here’s the Netflix synopsis: "One Army captain is forced use her years of tactical training and military expertise when a simultaneous coordinated attack threatens the remote missile interceptor station of which she is in command.” Justin couldn’t figure out if we were meant to be rooting for or against the bad guy. Ashley appreciated the portrayal of sexism in the military. Dave finally found a film that would allow him to fulfill his fantasy as a hero janitor!

Is there car or vehicle etiquette or "rules"? i.e. releasing of gases, in charge of music or volume, the climate or chip ins if you're a ride along, food and drink etc.?.. & what would they be?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Stranger Things (Season 4). Here’s the Netflix synopsis: "In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. As they search for answers, the children unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries.” Ranke joins the group to dive deep into Stranger Things trivia (complete with footnotes). Ashley loves Millie Bobby Brown so so much. Justin loves Angelo Palazzo; the sound effects designer for the show. Dave reminisces about his youth playing D&D, wherein he may or may not have been possessed by a demon/Satan.

How long should one wait to report a debit card lost or stolen (if you know you've misplaced it somewhere)? Some banks don't show you current transactions on their mobile or online app, and you lose all access to your accounts until you get a new card (same day if you go the branch; 4-6 days by mail). Personally, I waited 3 days. Now that my cards have been reported lost I will most likely find the old ones.

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched A Perfect Pairing. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: " To win over a major client, a go-getter LA wine executive signs on to work at an Australian sheep farm, where she sparks with a rugged and mysterious local. Justin enjoyed this unassuming (maybe bland?) romcom, which made him question his sanity. Ashley enjoyed the shirtless man. No surprise there. Dave was generally underwhelmed, but also visibly upset at the inability of anyone in the film to complete the manual labor tasks set out for them.  Everyone was confused by the casting of the protagonist’s father who looked more like he could be her brother (or maybe son?).

Where's the line between asking for a favor and paying for help?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Senior Year. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: "A high-school cheerleader falls into a coma before her prom; twenty years later, she awakens and wants to return to high school to reclaim her status and become prom queen.” We finally have a film that pandered to Ashley’s millennial demographic, which officially means that Ashley is OLD. She didn’t like being pandered to. Justin is unsure why nobody arrested the three people involved in the attempted murder of a high-school cheerleader. Dave proves that the best people were all uncool in high school. *apologies for the terrible audio quality of this episode - Justin forgot to turn on Ashley's microphone!

What’s the best music to play to chase people out of a party?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched 365 Days: This Day. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: "Laura and Massimo attempt to piece their lives back together following the inter-mafia conflict. However, Massimo's family ties and a mysterious man bidding for Laura's heart complicate the lovers' lives." This was so difficult to watch that both Ashley and Justin had to fast-forward through the second half of the film. Poor Dave on the other hand accidentally watched the first film before realizing he was supposed to have watched the sequel. So he watched them both! Without fast-forwarding! How do I stop my cat from licking me! I need some thoughts. I have a lovely, sweet cat - he greets people at the door, sleeps within sight of me all day when I work from home, and will give you a little thank you lick when you pet him. This is the problem. I've noticed that after I apply moisturizer to my face or hands, or lip balm to my lips, it's not one or two licks. He's WAY more interested in licking those areas and much more thorough. I'm basically getting a catbath! If you didn't know, cat saliva acts as a natural detergent and de-scenter, so when they are cleaning themselves, they're also getting rid of any smells that might be on their fur. I'm sure when he's licking me after my nightly skincare routine it's because he sees me as a stinky kitten that can't take care of itself and, out of affection, is trying to help, but I'm worried about him ingesting whatever is in my products. What should I do, spurn his affection? Let him lick me clean? Help!

This week, Justin and Dave watched Ozark. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: "A financial advisor drags his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he must launder money to appease a drug boss. The Byrdes and their teenage kids, Charlotte and Jonah, are, for all intents and purposes, an ordinary family with ordinary lives.” Justin appreciated the production value involved in this show, but had an emotional aversion to the characters and the story and the general vibe - especially the parts involving Jason Bateman urinating or visiting imaginary prostitutes. Dave had some deep thoughts as to why viewers are drawn to these dark sad stories (i.e., because their lives seem less crap in comparison), and had a lot to say about the corrupting power of money. 

What's the best way to get regular exercise?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched A Marked Heart. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: "A man hell-bent on exacting revenge on the organ trafficking organization that murdered his wife becomes involved with the woman who received her heart." Dave and Ashley laughed the whole way through this show despite the fact that it was not a comedy. Justin couldn’t tell the difference between any of the actors and was subsequently lost. Ashley was able to explain about Colombian culture which actually cleared up a lot of confusion.

Why do people buy take out, drive to a quiet scenic spot on a back road, enjoy their food, then CHUCK OUT ALL THE CONTAINERS on said scenic road?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Choose or Die. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “A broke student who plays an obscure 1980s survival computer game in pursuit of an unclaimed $100,000 prize. After a series of unexpectedly terrifying moments, she soon realises she's no longer playing for the money, but for her own life.” Robin, a horror aficionado, joined the podcast to help explain why this film wasn't a total dumpster fire. Dave didn't understand the premise or the ending. Justin didn't understand the premise or the ending either. But both enjoyed the fact that there were old 80s video game consoles in the film. Ashley ended up losing the bet she made with Justin on the last episode: she simply didn't enjoy this film, despite the (underutilized) charm of Asa Butterfield.

You go out with your husband for dinner at a new restaurant you have not frequented before. It is in a part of town you rarely visit. You are shocked to see your friend’s spouse having dinner with a very young, attractive person. From the way they are behaving, it is obvious they are more than friends. The couple finish their meal and leave without seeing you. They behave very affectionately on the way out the door. Do you: ,Tell your friend, knowing you probably will not be believed and that it may ruin your friendship? This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The In Between. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “After surviving a car accident that took the life of her boyfriend, a teenage girl believes he's attempting to reconnect with her from the after world.” Everyone acknowledges that this was just a re-telling of the film Ghost. Dave wishes he was in the abandoned sex hotel so he could have stolen the doors. Ashley reminisces about Japanese love hotels. Justin demands, for the second time on the podcast, that Dave install a hot tub in his office.

Is Giovanni cheating on me?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Bubble. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: “Sneaking out. Hooking up. Melting down. The cast and crew of a blockbuster action franchise attempt to shoot a sequel while quarantining at a posh hotel.” This one broke everyone’s spirit. With all these comedy geniuses involved, why was it so unfunny? And why did they hate dinosaur-penises so much?

What do you do when someone takes/steals an item from your grocery cart before you've paid for it? Is it even stealing?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Bridgerton, Season 2. Here’s the Netflix synopsis: During the Regency era in England, eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempt to find love. This was our fist live show with an audience and the team was joined on stage by Laura and Kailin. Laura is a Bridgerton superfan (and Regency era condom expert) who had hot takes for days on the literary allusions found in season 2. Kailin is a Bridgerton superenemy and was bored by almost everything that she saw on screen. Dave was painfully disappointed that this show did not contain the explicit sexual content that he was promised so wound up Googling beaver facts instead. Ashley was hypnotized by all the chiselled male buttocks. Justin got sidetracked by a lengthy deep dive into chamber pots.

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Black Crab. Here’s the synopsis: In a post-apocalyptic world, six soldiers on a covert mission must transport a mysterious package across a frozen archipelago. This sad, dark film made Dave sad and dark. Justin too was sad and dark, but also confused by the protagonist's motivations. Luckily, Ashley was there to explain why this sad, dark movie filled with endangered (and dead) children really brightened her day.

What do you do if you suspect someone is secretly an extraterrestrial?

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched The Adam Project. Here’s the synopsis: After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future. The cool-headed and refreshingly empathetic Natasha joins the crew this week to explain why she was quite happy to watch this charming film twice. Ashley seems to have gotten over her Ryan Reynolds obsession. Dave has only nice things to say about the child actor—a minor miracle and a podcast first. Justin loses his mind trying to understand the time-travelling rules of this film.

Why do people like the Peanuts so much? This has always boggled my mind.

This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Vikings: Valhalla, Episode 1. Here’s the synopsis: Plotting to avenge a massacre in England, Viking armies converge in Kattegat. However, siblings Leif and Freydis exact a different kind of retribution. Donna Trembinksi, an actual real-life professor of history who teaches a university course on vikings, joined the crew and discussed a major plot point that this show got very very very very wrong about viking culture/history. Ashley was a fan of the oiled up men in the show, while Dave was too distracted Googling viking facts to enjoy himself. Justin advocates for swapping our democratic capitalist system for a viking-style revenge-based society, but nobody is on board with his proposal. When your children are asleep in a hotel room at 9:53 PM is it acceptable to leave them in there alone and go do other things in the hotel?

Here’s the official Netflix synopsis for Restless: After going to extremes to cover up an accident, a corrupt cop's life spirals out of control when he starts receiving threats from a mysterious witness. Ashley enjoyed this French action film, and even cried when the sympathetic character was killed. Justin, on the other hand, laughed very very hard. Meanwhile, Dave continues to believe that the solution to police corruption is an espresso machine.

Marshmallow fluff - why does this exist and what does one do with it? We have a tub sitting on our kitchen table because our daughter wanted to bake fluffernutter cookies but the recipe barely used a tablespoon of it. Help!

Dave, Justin, Ashley, and Kailin discuss Inventing Anna, the #1 show on Netflix this week. Here’s the official synopsis: Audacious entrepreneur or con artist? A reporter digs into how Anna Delvey convinced New York's elite she was a German heiress. Based on a true story. We were honored to have Kailin on this episode who provided some high-level insight as to why this seemingly superficial underdog story is deeply Gatsbyesque in its artful exploration of identity performance. Meanwhile, Ashley thought it was trash, Dave was driven nuts by a need to know the truth, and Justin wasted an entire morning researching the accuracy and plausibility of Julia Garner’s bonkers accent.

The evils of sugar... we all know about it but why are we ignoring it?

Dave, Justin, and Ashley, discuss Tall Girl 2, the #1 show on Netflix this week. Here’s the official synopsis: Landing the lead in the school musical is a dream come true for Jodi, until the pressure sends her confidence—and her relationship—into a tailspin. Ashley was amazed at the total lack of attention paid to the enormous musical that was supposed to be at the heart of this film. Dave had a really good laugh at one scene that was not meant to be funny at all. Justin went apoplectic dealing with all the wrongness around tall people stuff and the inability of Hollywood to figure out what the difference between Sweden and The Netherlands is.

Here’s the official synopsis: Posing as a wealthy, jet-setting diamond mogul, he wooed women online then conned them out of millions of dollars. Now some victims plan for payback. After some recent attempts at bathroom surgery on a ripped fingernail, I’m wondering if the experts think that first aid courses should include instruction on simple surgical procedures? Could ease pressure on the health system if we all had a few more basic skills perhaps?

Kevin James stars as the real-life New Orleans Saints coach in this funny and heartwarming story produced by Adam Sandler. This might just be the most divisive film the crew has ever discussed. Ashley authentically enjoyed it and laughed at everything. Dave and Justin are fundamentally flummoxed by her reaction as they seemed to have enjoyed nothing about this.

Here’s the official synopsis: New York hairdresser Izzy seizes the chance to work at the wedding of a charming prince. When sparks start to fly between the two of them, love and duty are put to the test as the time of the wedding draws closer. Ashley couldn’t find anything to love about this film. Justin quite enjoyed it and laughed out loud at the outrageous accent work. Dave enjoyed it too, but that might just be the drugs talking.

Here’s the official synopsis: Mystery writer Grace Miller has killer instincts when it comes to motive - and she'll need every bit of expertise to help solve her sister's murder. Ann returns to the show to discuss her hypothesis that two versions of this film were made: the Hallmark version, and the porn version. Justin wants someone to explain what the “it” is that the dominatrixes in this film keep insisting that their clients “say”. Dave has lots to say about the detective’s home renovations skills. Ashley loves Alyssa Milano very very much, but also hates this film very very much.

My 11 year old daughter just asked ‘What’s a Wookiee?’ leading my partner to remark on her cultural deficiency. To what extent should we push the pop culture icons of our youth onto today’s youth? And specifically is it important to know what a Wookiee is? (P.S., she knows who Chewbacca is).

Justin could not figure out what these people had been eating for the last 9 months, why they were so obsessed with All Stars (the most useless shoe to have on during the apocalypse), or why they couldn't stop talking about boats.

Should parents send their kids back to school during the omicron wave of the covid-19 pandemic? 

Dave and Justin and Ashley discuss Cobra Kai, the #1 show on  Netflix this  week. Here’s the official synopsis: Thirty four years after events of the 1984 All Valley Karate  Tournament, a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence seeks redemption by reopening  the infamous Cobra Kai dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now  successful Daniel LaRusso. As Gen-Xers, Dave and Justin have never been more pandered to in their entire live. But they both agreed that it was worth it, even if Dave was personally attacked by the choice to have Johnny end up in the trades. Ashley hated episode 1, but enjoyed the series more as it went along. But she's just not able to feel the same love for Johnny and Daniel as Dave and Justin do. I mean, Dave ended up taking karate and pursing a life-long love of martial arts after seeing the original film for Miyagi's sake!

Dave and Justin discuss Army of Thieves, the #1 show on Netflix this week. In this prequel to "Army of the Dead," a mysterious woman recruits bank teller Dieter to assist in a heist of impossible-to-crack safes across Europe. Dave didn’t enjoy this at all, and spent the entire film waiting for an explanation of the Army of the Dead time loop paradox that never appeared. Justin loved this film and identified with the nerdy German safe-cracking protagonist. Ashley sort of liked it at first but learned to hate it in the end. The group was divided, but all did agree that it would be worth their time to go to an underground safe-cracking tournament in Berlin the next time they’re in town.

Ann: When is it ok for stores to have Christmas stuff on the shelves?

Because these are all the ingredients for a compelling-ass movie!

When is it time to get your parents some help?

Here’s the official synopsis: Hundreds of cash-strapped contestants accept an invitation to compete in children's games for a tempting prize, but the stakes are deadly. Ashley joins the lads this week to explain why the protagonist of this show is in fact a good guy, and why Korean street food is da bomb. Dave finds himself dolling out life advice from a bathroom stall for people drinking nose blood. Justin really liked this show, even though the bad guys look like Teletubbies. Oh, and Justin and Ashley would totally trample Dave’s dead body if they ever got the chance to play the deadly version of Red Light/Green light IRL. Justin's synopsis of Squid Game: Imagine a world in which the Teletubbies ran an underground gladiatorial arena where disenfranchised people and terminal cancer patients battle to the death in order to win confusingly large sums of money. It’s like bum fights for kids crossed with a technicolor version of the holocaust. Sounds awful right? Nope. It’s compelling and captivating and I don’t understand why.

Ashley wants to know if she should get a second masters degree or move on to a PhD right away. A timeless question that everyone can relate to!

Dave and Justin discuss Sex Education the #1 show on Netflix this week. Here’s the official synopsis: A teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school. Dave and Justin have almost nothing bad to say about Sex Education. It’s good. That’s all. Although, it could’ve been improved if Dave were available to clean up the asbestos in the toilet.

Any marriage advice?

Dave and Justin discuss Kate the #1 show on Netflix this week. Here’s the official synopsis: After she's poisoned, a criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge. Dave and Justin figure out that Woody Harrelson must have only been available for one day of shooting for this film. Also, there is confusion as to why anyone would want to spend their last day on earth running around murdering people when you could instead just have a nice meal at a fancy restaurant and go for a walk on a beach or whatever.

Here’s the official synopsis: Determined to make the most of her final summer before college, Elle plans the ultimate bucket list as she navigates what comes next with Noah and Lee. Matt and Tory join the lads to unpack this teen romcom. Matt explains how this is like Fast & Furious for Zoomers, but the metaphor is lost on Dave and Justin. Tory reveals her unexpected knowledge of yachts and knots. Justin cannot understand why "mummy wants to sell the beach house" became the premise for an entire film, and Dave cannot believe that even this ridiculous romcom somehow managed to sneak in yet another car chase scene.

Here’s the official synopsis: A music-loving kinkajou embarks on the journey of a lifetime to fulfill his destiny and deliver a love song for an old friend. Dave is disturbed that the film failed to properly address the socio-political issues surround the US embargo against Cuba. Justin wonders if this might be an anti-environmentalism film secretly funded by the oil and gas industry. Both the lads are confused as to why there is a kinkajou and a basilisk in the film.

Moraig MacGillivray joins the lads to discuss this new Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle. Moraig provides a fantastic explanation as to why all Hollywood on-screen fight scenes are utter nonsense. Dave (generously) suspects that most of the charm and comedy of the film was literally lost in translation. Justin was so confused by what was happening that he admits to fast-forwarding through some of the film out of spite.

Here’s the official synopsis: After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever. Cory Rushton, zombie expert (and associate professor of English at St. Francis Xavier University), joins Dave and Justin for this week's episode to help the boys sort through this zombie romp.  Cory has a bone to pick with the zombie tiger, and provides some much needed context to Zack Snyder's most recent take on the zombie genre. Dave has a number of objections to the improper use of construction saws and jet fuel, while Justin has his concerns about the introduction of procreating zombies and superfluous times loops.
