“I Realized I Have to Be Proud of Myself” with Erin Hattamer

Erin Hattamer grew up in a small town with a Roman Catholic upbringing.  Couple that with the opportunity to perform in theater since 4th grade and you have all the ingredients of a successful comedian/writer/actor, right? Sort of. Erin is funny, but Erin is practical. And comedy is an unstable career. She attempted to find stability in other areas until an academic route to comedy presented itself.  This added a seriousness to her craft, particularly while working on her creative non-fiction writing thesis about her eating disorder.  Erin took a break stress and un-funness by viewing refrigerator organization videos on Tik Tok. On a whim, she posted a comedic sketch that earned over a 1 million views overnight on TikTok.   Now, Erin is blazing a new path for an under 30 queer woman from Adam Sandler’s home state managing mental health who is using her platform for funny, but also to let people from different communities know they’re heard Oh, we deep dive into her Semester At Sea experience, the one I only got to see on MTV. #careerpodcast #blackwomenpodcast #lgbtq #comedy #tiktok #disorderedeating #mentalhealth TIK TOK Erin Hattamer INSTAGRAM @erinhatta

“If It Feels Like Release in Your Body, It’s Probably a Good Sign” with Samantha Sacchi

“If It Feels Like Release in Your Body, It’s Probably a Good Sign” with Samantha Sacchi

Samantha Sacchi’s family tree is rooted in entrepreneurship. Roots that stretch to Venezuela, Spain, Italy and Lebanon have given her a global perspective on how people determine their priorities. Procuring 2 bachelors degrees and a masters degrees in different countries helped her set a gauge for difficulty in pursuit of a goal. It showed her that earning hard things requires hard word. Submitting resumes to countless of jobs after college, waiting to be picked for an entry-level position felt neither hard, nor earned. Samantha’s style was more the “re-tool the job description of an internship so well that they offer you a full-time role”. Until it wasn’t. A health scare during a time when she grinding in her career lead her to spend 8 life-changing days in Spain. Eight days to know that her next path had to align with her emotions and her passions. She spent a year in Australia undoing the career path to build her new vocation. Now, Samantha expands consciousness and brings her clients back to their souls through teaching, facilitation, coaching, mentoring and consulting. Through her business, The Self Club, she creates powerful spaces and programs for people to experience their true power. Samantha has lived in a dozen cities across 4 continents and has no doubt that the bottom line of life is Love. All her work leads back to that. Oh, and we dive into the role the expectations of your parents plays in the career choices of their children. And it’s a doozy! THE SELF CLUB https://theself.club INSTAGRAM @sami.sacchi

“Success and Action in Equity are Sparked by Authentic Relationships “ with Katrina Austria Marrero

Being the daughter and granddaughter of immigrants means you shoulder the hopes of having a career with income stability and notoriety. At least it did for Katrina Austria Marrero, the first person in her nuclear family to graduate from college in the USA. Katrina’s identity has driven her to pursue careers where she is able to influence marginalized communities toward opportunities that open their lives to choices. In many instances, her sphere of influence was strongest in in educational fields, where she made sure she had a seat at the table. Then she whittled a new table by founding True Student Athletes; a provider of personalized services in academics, college admissions and early career advising for student-athletes from grades 6-12 & beyond in various geographic markets. Her sphere expanded to roles where she managed partnerships and supported employers with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). A mom of 2 young boys with a new full-time role who’s also managing a business with her husband, Katrina is leaning in in ways Sheryl Sandberg could never. "I Don’t Mind Sticking Out, Other People Treating You Like You Stick Out is the Problem" with Denaya Jones-Reid

Denaya Jones-Reid was looking to earn extra money, not a whole career, when she worked at Charlene’s Kitchen. Observing a Black woman who, not only had her own catering business, but one who was who was superior in her craft, opened the door to a career in hospitality. Dee later found that earning a degree in public relations gave her the technical skills needed in a business. Any business, not just hospitality. Being in the industry in a variety of roles best prepared her for a growing career in the craft cocktail space. As a managing partner at Seelbach’s, a company created to match small batch bourbon and wine distilleries with curious drinkers; Dee got a hardcore crash course in licensing, retail, packaging, and human resources. And because not all 24 hours of her day were filled; Dee co-hosts the Soul Palate podcast to normalize the Black and Brown palate, speak about current events and topics within food, beverage and the world. Oh, and her podcast co-host was featured on the Netflix’s “Drink Masters”. #blackgirlswhiskey #podcast #careerpodcast #blackwomenpodcasts #whiskeypodcast DEESTILLED https://www.deestilled.co SEELBACH’S https://seelbachs.com SOUL PALATE PODCAST https://www.deestilled.co/soulpalate CHARLENE’S KITCHEN https://charlenes-kitchen.com

"Black Women Can do Anything… Including Owning a Scuba Dive Shop" with Celine Monfort

Celine Monfort grew up in the very beautiful French Caribbean island of Martinique. This Type A child was focused on becoming a lion veterinarian in Africa and attended an intensive preparation school after high school to get her there. Interactions with super smart students who were the teensiest bit ignorant pivoted her veterinary path to one where she earned a masters degree in economics and marketing. Eight years in ultra-competitive cosmetic marketing industry in role most people would leave after 2 months gave her the skills she needed to excel in the scuba dive industry. Since then, her life opened to a career as both a documentarian and scuba dive shop owner. One who rarely gets to scuba dive, but one who is changing the face of the industry. "Heartbreak, Disappointment, and Being Lied to Don’t Have a Color” with Coach Ed

Ed was a kid who loved poetry, music and art. But when you have parents who grew up without electricity or running water, a career as a broke artist isn’t a path they want for their son. Luckily, the entrepreneurial seed was planted early when found success in high school selling custom-made accessories.  Attending an HBCU gave him more than a nickname - it gave him the pride, perseverance, and power he needed to get through a rigorous master’s degree in human behavior. Ed was prepared to take the corporate world by storm. The corporate world had other plans. By then, the entrepreneurial seed sprouted and he created For Love Coaching to give people the tools to help them better understand themselves and their upbringing so they can find (healthy) love in dating and in dating after divorce. I'd Do It For A Hug and A High-Five with Meredith Steele

Meredith Steele thought she was going to take her college degree and become a historical fiction writer, a job that would certainly make her librarian mother proud.  But Life is going to Life, and Meredith went from working in restaurants to being scouted for a job she'd never heard of to seeing her 'for funsies' TikTok account go from 2,000 followers to 50,000 in one day. Through her growing content creation business, Babies of Steele, Meredith has found that people come to her page for the funny; but they stay to see a woman verbally process her mental health, her almost 200-pound body (gasp!), and life that Pinterest did not build. Oh, and she leveraged her followers to help send 40 LGBTQ+ and allied teens to a weeklong overnight leadership camp, called New Leaders Project.  BABIES OF STEELE https://direct.me/babiesofsteele  TIKTOK https://www.tiktok.com/@babiesofsteele  TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA WITH MEREDITH https://trovatrip.com/trips/costa-rica-with-meredith--steele-apr-2022  YOU SHOULD KNOW  New Leaders Project https://www.equalitymaine.org/new-leaders-project-camp

I Would Rather Be Straight Than Have Anxiety with Vickto_Willy

Victoria Williams has always carved her own path, but made sure she created one that others could follow. She started playing tennis when she was 6 years old, when a coach took notice of her talent and took extra initiative to develop her skills.  It was a bit of an escape from the rough area she lived with her family, but it also made her a bit of an "other" between her two lives. That was part of the reason she selected an HBCU, where she could be the first of her siblings to attend college.  While a degree in medical field was stable, it did not feed her creative side.  Enter social media, where she could stretch those muscles and find a way toward a new career -- a career that let's her tell her stories her way.  A career that lets people see that a queer, Black, Millennial, managing her anxiety and a beautiful relationship is thriving. Oh, and she organized a protest. I Got a Degree in a Country Where Having a Degree Tends to Be a Good Thing with Tayne & Ade

Tayne is a brand manager in product marketing. Ade works in communications for the government. Born to Nigerian parents who were supportive (but not psycho) about their educations; they each earned master's degrees. These very accomplished women also happen to love reality TV shows and created "Altar Call: A Married at First Sight Podcast". At its core, their podcast is two friends who are rooting for love, but side-eyeing the foolishness along the way.  They deep dive into the psychology of the contestants, the impact of the "experts" on these legally binding marriages, show ratings, and a "Where Are They Now" of past participants.  They join me to talk about the real work that goes into putting out a just-for-fun podcast when one of you is Type A and has a hard and fast rule about podcasts that open with idle host banter, and other is super organized but would still like to outsource some aspects of the job.  The three of us meander from Married at First Sight (MAFS) to the challenges Bravo is currently facing with race, why "Love is Blind" had an impeccable first season, and a tiny teaser about the upcoming season of MAFS in their hometown of Houston, TX. Oh, and I learn why Yvonne Orji's impersonation of her parents' Nigerian accent is a little annoying. A Love Letter to Family, Chicago and TJ Lavin with Jacquis Neal

When he was a kid, Jacquis Neal turned his mother's laundry basket into a podium and an empty toilet paper roll into a microphone. He was an entertainer before he could explain what an entertainer was. Jacquis grew up on the tougher side of Chicago, where being signed to a label and a run-in with the law eventually led him to theater.  He found he was comfortable on stage and happy when he had a script.  Equal parts WuTang and Oliver Twist, Jacquis discovered he could be successful and be himself at the same damn time.  Now he is an actor, podcaster, comedian, voiceover artist, reluctant writer and all-around entertainer who knows no one can succeed in show business without understanding that it is a business.  And that he can be funny without hurting marginalized groups.  And that entertainers DO have supportive and loving families.  Oh, and we both love MTVs “The Challenge”. I Love Hiring People Smarter Than Myself with Rob Poynor

I Love Hiring People Smarter Than Myself with Rob Poynor

When Rob Poynor was 7 or 8 years old, he went to a parade and decided he would be in a marching band when when he went to college. When he was recruited to a scholastically competitive university that offered to pay for half of his tuition, he declined the offer because the school didn't have a marching band.  From a kid growing up in rural, isolated Arkansas; higher education was prominent in the state. Only, he didn't know many people who actually went, so it was a surprise when people snickered at his plan to study law with no intention of becoming an attorney. Rob's plan was simply to pursue things he was interested in, good at, and helped others.  And he was doing well.  His first year was a breeze. Then a revelation about his sexuality and the confusion of what that would mean to his friends and family changed that path. Rob worked in accounting.  He kept a business owner and his wife from spending all their money on useless stuff.  He opened a comedy club. No matter what he did, he somehow consistently ended up in higher education.  And stayed there for 33 years.  Recently retired, he reflects on how his servant leader style, allyship, and "bull in a China closet" approach to diversity, equity and inclusion made him the professional that his students needed, his staff admired, and the higher ups feared.  Oh, and he shares how Arkansas has a culture of its own.

Have a Memorable Experience and Leave Only Your Footprint Behind with Sadie Jordan

Have a Memorable Experience and Leave Only Your Footprint Behind with Sadie Jordan

Sadie Jordan describes herself as never one to be quiet. Raised in the northeast of the United States where cultures other than hers were the focus, she was heavily influenced by the Afro-Costa Rican women in her family who put social justice on a pedestal. Education and excellence were modeled by these influential women and Sadie knew she had big shoes to fill, only she wasn’t sure how. She worked in a variety of jobs where she excelled, but none were in service of her passion for travel or social justice. A chance encounter at a hostel during a solo trip exposed her the tourism industry. She immediately enrolled at a community college with a surprisingly robust tourism program and the resources this adult learner needed academically and personally. Sadie became the go-to person for culturally-based experiences at the tourism company she worked for, something her Harvard-graduate colleagues could not. She collected research, created itineraries, and proposed countless ideas to her management on curating experiences for people of color that could set them apart in the industry. When those proposals fell on deaf ears, she knew she had the skills to do it on her own and founded Soul Life Travel. They Eventually Learn That We Don’t Go Away with Randall Arauz

Randall Arauz graduated from the University of Costa Rica in 1988. His early career was focused on sea turtle conservation, when he worked as the Administrator of the Green Turtle Research Station and then as the Director of the Leatherback National Park in the early 90s. Throughout the 90s he worked as an associate researcher at the University of Costa Rica and founded the Costa Rican NGO PRETOMA in 1997 to initiate on-going community-based sea turtle conservation projects and to seek solutions for the high shrimp trawling induced mortality on sea turtles. In the late 90s he became interested in the longline fleet and its impact on sea turtles, and for 10 years directed an observer program that resulted in the generation of unique longline fisheries data in the region. During this lapse he stumbled upon the shark finning issue and started an on-going campaign that has had domestic, regional, and global impact. Randall has appealed to the Costa Rican legal system repeatedly to obtain benchmark victories, such as the closure of the green turtle fishery in 1999, a mandate to land sharks with fins attached in 2006, an impediment to initiate a Tuna Farm project in 2007, a ban on the use of private docks by the Taiwanese shark fishing fleet in 2010, and a ban on shrimp trawling in 2013. He has officially represented Costa Rica at international conventions such as CMS (2007) and CITES (2013) and has been a member of the official Cocos Island Regional Management Council since 2011. He has held memberships in several IUCN Specialist Groups (Sea Turtles, Sharks and Connectivity Conservation). He currently serves as Marine Conservation Policy Advisor for the Colorado based non-profit Fins Attached Marine Research and Conservation. Oh, and he wants to make a living selling beer to biologists conducting studies when he retires. You Have to Lead with Authenticity and Vulnerability with Mr. Johnny Ross

You Have to Lead with Authenticity and Vulnerability with Mr. Johnny Ross

Mr. Johnny Ross was a theater kid who knew his career path would be different than anything his school in rural New Jersey prepared him to do. He enrolled in cosmetology school with the goal of working in a hair salon, but the potential for inconsistency in hair coloring and the 9021-no atmosphere of a salon left him unfulfilled.  So, Johnny pivoted to make-up and taught himself everything he needed to know on every single brand at Sephora. Under the guidance of a Store Director who lead by example, he felt empowered to create a haircare training program for the make-up and skincare-loving staff to break into the untapped hair service products in the store. Armed with years of professional freelance make-up artist (MUA) experience at New York Fashion Week, weddings, events, and a college degree he earned in his late 20s; Johnny was about to break through to the career he busted his ass to build. That is, until a global pandemic no one saw coming lost him not one, but two, career-changing opportunities. The pandemic gave him the clarity to see that having a social media presence was his currency to securing work in marketing. Johnny put out a comedy video based on his experience interacting with clients in a New Jersey Sephora and gained 50,000 followers in 1 day. Now he has over 1 million followers and brands like Fenty Beauty (yes, the one created by Rihanna) knocking on his virtual door. Johnny uses his platform to address issues of inclusion in the $532 billion beauty industry with comedy and candor. Oh, and he clarifies why I always get offered the same shade of lipliner every time I go to MAC. Always Say Yes to New Adventures with Felipe Trigueros

Like most people at 17, Felipe Trigueros was not sure what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He knew he was interested in sports, but not sure if a career as a professional soccer player was going to pan out. Luckily, his parents gave him the freedom to choose any career he wanted and suggested a safe degree in business administration until he could figure it out.  Felipe found work in finance for 2 years. But he hated it. What he didn't hate was learning, hiking, traveling, meeting people and going on adventures.  Your Costa Rica Adventure was created to provide a travel site that gave English-speakers insight on the places Costa Ricans actually go. Get You a Barbie Doll the Next Time Decide to Play with a Bitch with Remedy is Frank

When you choose a social media handle like Remedy is Frank, you’re letting people know that you don’t deal in fluff.  Remedy works hard, values her time, and isn’t here for bullshit. From tagging dry cleaning in over 100 degree heat to working in bank fraud to project management in the male-dominated automotive industry; she’s been able to advance in a variety of industries without a college degree. Mainly because she’s been working since she was 14 and has always known what she’s capable of doing. What Remedy is capable of doing is creating a safe space that people can trust. A conscious was born in this woman with a rough childhood who expressed her love and broad perspective of the world and its people in her poetry. A content creator who would rather monetize her Tik Tok on ample corporate budgets rather than the pockets of her supporters; Remedy addresses issues of colorism, cultural appropriation, LGBTQIA+, equity in relationships, sexualization of women, mental health, growth, corporate greed, and bullying. In less than year she has more than 1.6 million likes on her page. Followers come to her page for an education, to feel empowered, and to see her drag trolls with her soft voice and strong message. I Like Y'all a Little Bit...but No with Keisha Burchell-Webb

Keisha Burchell-Webb has never not had big dreams.  Pediatrician. Journalist for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Writer for the Cartoon Network. Actress. Podcaster.  With a degree in Public Relations from Florida A&M University, natural talent, and drive; she has all the tools she needs to make those dreams her reality. But life is going to life and she’s had to make some changes in her path. The thread in every position she’s held is being of service to others. Keisha surprised herself by becoming a successful broadcast journalist for 7 years. (And to think, she thought she’d be writing the copy for the talent, not becoming the talent!) While she was able to express her funny, goofy side at work; she was not able to be her truly authentic self. When a number of life events in 2020 changed several of her identities at once, Keisha could no longer stifle the social activism that grew during her years at her HBCU. With a boss who was willfully ignorant to her expressions of racial insensitivities in the workplace, Keisha turned to Tik Tok to share her thoughts and feelings.  And the woman her boss labeled as the “Sensitive Black Girl” is amassing a following of like-minded people. 125,000 (and growing!) people. I Am Not 'Anti-Corporate America', I Am 'Pro-People' with Hannah Williams

Hannah Williams is a 25-year-old content creator in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area tackling a major issue in the United States: salary transparency. With her viral series, Salary Transparent Street, Hannah challenges strangers across the country to share what they do and how much they make to fight discriminatory pay practices in the workforce, and further close the gender pay gap. Hannah uses her platform to educate her community, including sharing ways to strategize your career to reach professional goals, and build generational wealth." Sounds pretty amazing, right? And it is…it’s just not the whole story. Truth is, Hannah wanted to have a career in the sports industry. She is big into to sports, but not so big into running herself ragged for no pay. So she shifted her major and found she had a knack for business. Hannah honed her skills, applied them to competitions, and started her own business to fill a void in the food & beverage industry in her area. And it went really well…until it didn’t. She graduated with debt and took a job that would pay her bills. But living paycheck to paycheck was taking a toll on her financially and personally, so she put her extensive research skills to good use and found a job that paid much better. Over the course of two and half years, Hannah changed jobs 5 times and, ultimately, increased her salary from $40,000 to $115,000. Hannah did experience push back from managers when she presented detailed, highly researched and data-driven rationale for salary increases; which led to wonder what the secrecy in salaries was all about. Oh, and she just quit her last job to pursue her passion full-time.  Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@salarytransparentstreet Stan Store https://stan.store/salarytransparentstreet

It's Not Hard Work, But It's Work with Nicole Lang

Nicole Lang has the patience of a turtle, the kindness of a saint, and the cheekbones of a supermodel. I mean, she doesn’t need that last bit to be successful in her career as a real estate agent, but it doesn’t hurt. Real estate was not her dream career when she graduated from high school. Being a veterinarian was. But she met her future ex-husband shortly after graduating and moved to Germany for his career in the military. She worked at a German insurance company that did not fulfill her in any way, shape or form. After moving back to The States and purchasing a home for her growing family, the agent she was working with recognized that she had the chops to be a successful real estate agent. Thinking it was something she could do for a couple hours around her family responsibilities, she gave it go...and quickly realized that she’d need to work hard. Harder than she anticipated. Harder than the people on “Million Dollar Listing” and “Selling Sunset”. You will see her signature red lip, her penchant for being a social butterfly, and passion for supporting veterans. What you won’t see is the hours she spends generating leads, completing countless courses, mentoring new agents, carefully reviewing copious legal documents, or explaining “love equity” to a home owner. You won’t see that, after her divorce, she challenged to herself to purchase a home on her own in 5 years. And did it in 2. Part bougie, part country, this talented networker who loves her kids and her chickens will change what you think you know about a career as a real estate agent. Oh, and she will always be a staunch supporter of Food Banks. Nicole Lang http://theroostwithnicole.com/

We Loosened Our Grip on Our Need to Explain Ourselves with Dr. Natasha Gordon - Chipembere

We Loosened Our Grip on Our Need to Explain Ourselves with Dr. Natasha Gordon - Chipembere

When a 5-year-old Natasha was asked what she wanted to be she grew up, she had 3 clear goals: pig farmer, Bob Hope's wife, writer. Adult Natasha is a vegetarian, her partner is not a philandering comedian, but she has written the first historical fiction novel on the Black Madonna called "Finding Le Negrita" that is being published in September 2022.  1 out of 3 really ain't bad.  Born in Brooklyn, NY to Costa Rican and Panamanian parents, her focus was on family and education. In fact, her father could not fathom why she would need friends when she was being raised in a brownstone bursting at the seams with aunts, uncles, grandparents and annual trips to Costa Rica to spend with even more people linked to her by DNA and stories. Even after an idiot guidance counselor told her she didn't have what it takes to go to Vassar College; Natasha earned an undergraduate degree (from Vassar!), 2 Master's degrees, and a PhD.  Her passion is to amplify the experiences of people of African descent and enslavement as a professor and author.  The powder-keg of race in the United States compelled Natasha and her husband to move to Costa Rica with their children because, while she and her husband could never have predicted COVID, no part of them was surprised by the 45th President. Even with her self-described "pitiful Spanish", Natasha is able to live a more intentional writing life where, among many other things, she interviewed Costa Rica's first Black Vice-President for Essence magazine and a writes a monthly series about race and diversity in the Tico Times.  She is the founder and host of the Tengo Sed Writing Retreats, an exclusive gathering of global BIPOC writers who gather in Costa Rica.  Oh, and she also became a certified yoga teacher.  You can find more about Natasha and her work at: https://www.natashagordonchipembere.com/ Instagram @natashagordonchipembere

Adversity Doesn't Say 'I'll Be Back Later' with Fletcher Cleaves

Fletcher Cleaves is a Memphis native who simply cannot sit still.  He dreamed of a life as an athlete who had the freedom to spend as much time in the water (because it's HOT in The South, y'all) and own the Hangout House where his family and friends would gather.  As a college freshman with a football scholarship to Lambuth University, his vision was within reach. That is, until a driver suspected of texting while driving changed Fletcher's path.  As a quadriplegic whose parents lost their jobs in order to become their son's full-time caregivers,  Fletcher still couldn't sit still.  He re-enrolled in college and earned a degree in Computer Science. He also began promoting the importance of safe driving and overcoming adversity as a professional speaker on ESPN, a National Safety Transportation Board (NSTB) event in Washington D.C., as well as at many schools, colleges, sports teams, community organizations, and businesses.   Along the way Fletcher was bit by the travel bug and The Wheelchair Nomad was created!  Highlighting the challenges of accessibility in travel and how "sure, we have an elevator" can mean different things in different countries, Fletcher is determined to visit every wonder of the world with his signature smile and willingness to try it all.   Oh, and he has gone scuba diving in the Georgia Aquarium and can confirm that Whale Shark is BIG! I Know My Market is Really Niche with Kevin Knight

Kevin Knight’s passion for travel and people started as a child living internationally and during a study abroad for a semester while pursuing his undergraduate degree. After 16 years of financial services, Kevin decided it was time to pursue his passion of entrepreneurship and share his love for adventure and travel with others. Kevin became the Founder and CEO of Urban Events Global (UEG), voted USA TODAY 10Best Top 5 Best Adventure Travel Company in 2020 and 2021. With a vision to cultivate a space for professional people of color to interact organically through events around the world, UEG began as a camping trip and has grown to become the hub for events, such as Urban Camp Weekend, Urban Excursion Weekend, Urban Cruise Weekend, the annual UEG Meet Up, and much more. Kevin’s passion for awareness of the world through experiences, leisure, food, history, and people is the not-so-secret to his success. Oh, and reminds me that airplanes still serve good food (though, probably not on Spirit).

Sometimes You Gotta Use A 4-Letter Word with My Dad (Part I)

Sometimes You Gotta Use A 4-Letter Word with My Dad (Part I)

My dad was the first person in his family to go to college.  Having a career where he went from wearing street clothes to suits enabled him to be an active DEI advocate before it become fashionably performative. Along the way, he had people and programs that made his trajectory possible and he always looked for ways to pay it forward - even if he had to use 4-letter words to get it done.   INSTAGRAM Just kidding. He has no presence on "The Facebook" or any of that other social media crap. "Why would you want to put all your personal business out there?".     YOU SHOULD KNOW Gabby Thomas https://www.instagram.com/gabbythomas Gabby Thomas graduated from Harvard with a degree in neurobiology with a secondary in global health and health policy and is now pursuing her masters in public health, specifically epidemiology at Texas. Instead of Seeing It as a Problem I Can't Solve, What If I Could? with Steven Hatchett

Steven Hatchett is the founder of _OFCOLOR, an organization that amplifies creative artists of color through intimate cultural events in Austin, TX.  Coming from Chicago, a city with a thriving cultural arts community; it didn't long for Steven to use his mastery of networking and collaboration to make _OFCOLOR a growing community with annual events that include arts weekends, fashion shows, and brunch targeted to professionals of color -- a unique challenge in a city where Black and Brown people are leaving. And that's not even his day job!  Steven has spent over 20 years in both nonprofits and higher education.  Driven by the lack of professional mentors in his own education and career path, Steven's on a mission to ensure students of color have the information and preparation they need to succeed in the world of work. At the first and only HBCU in Austin, Steven's work lead to the generation of over $250,000 in donations to support the placement of students in technology roles throughout the city.  In his free time Steven sits on the advisory board at KMFA classical music station to strategize engagement opportunities for diverse communities and their historical connections to the classical genre.  Oh, and he is also an avid photographer... you know, in his other free time.  _OFCOLOR https://www.instagram.com/_ofcoloratx STEVEN HATCHETT https://www.instagram.com/hatchettsteve https://www.instagram.com/steventhephotog

No Matter How Hard It Is, I'm Gonna Find a Way to Win with Regular Guys Random Thoughts Podcast

Ever been somewhere and overheard two guys having a crazy conversation over random topics? Well, Yonni and Terryl are those guys and they record those conversations on the Regular Guys Random Thoughts Podcast.  Backed by 2 decades of friendship that began in college and persisted through their careers (one, a family's succession into media; the other, fired by his mom); they use their frank approach, infectious laughter, and impeccably-timed jokes to discuss everything from the Ryle Kittenhouse verdict to exactly how fast fast food should be. They really don't need me to get you to fall in love with them, which is why you hear very little from me. I edited my dumbass out of a lot of this episode because the magic, the secret sauce is in hearing these men who had the hunger, humility and willingness to learn and put in the work, thrive.  Listen in as they discuss their career paths, how they were shaped by their time at both PWIs and HBCUs,  the difference between male and female friendships, and how many minutes of "The Notebook" is enough.  Oh, and they pick which cast member "Married at First Sight" should get punched in the throat at all future family functions.

Quitting is Positive, Quitting is Good, Quitting is Progress with Coonoor Behal

If you asked the toddler version of Coonoor Behal what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would NOT have said "I want to write a book that seeks to help readers rethink and reframe quitting by sharing stories from everyday people who summoned the courage to quit things in their lives".  Yet, here she is.  The author of "I Quit! The Life-Affirming Joy of Giving Up".  Growing up as a South Asian American who thrived in school because she liked it; Coonoor took a windy path through 3 corporate bureaucratic careers before becoming the Founder & CEO of Mindhatch, a consultancy that helps organizations create the conditions for innovation and creativity to thrive. Through Mindhatch, Coonoor delivers her unique mix of expertise in Design Thinking, Organizational ImprovTM, Innovation Facilitation, and Diversity & Inclusion.  Coonoor has helped Deloitte create, prototype, and launch an in-house design thinking consulting arm; be a part of a “stealth” team of design strategists and researchers guiding numerous teams at Starbucks; trained more than 100 people at Bethpage Federal Credit Union in design thinking; helped the Department of State and the Pentagon use improv to be more creative and collaborative thinkers, and has helped the Inter-American Development Bank’s Gender & Diversity Division generate and come to a consensus on their strategic vision.   Oh, and she got the idiot who sexually harassed her fired. Jimi Fritz grew up in a town marked by violence and racism.  When he dropped out of school at the age of 15, he had no ambitions or goals other than to experience absolutely anything else.  In the late 1960s, he was able to cobble together enough money being a musician -- the kind that goes from place to place with a hat on the ground collecting change - to read great literature and travel.  Eventually, Jimi tapped into a creative side that was cultivated by experiences to become a musician that was paid in the kind of money that folds.  Then he became a filmmaker.  And a writer.  A husband. A father. And, along the way, an ethical drug dealer.  Less Nino Brown, more Walgreens.  Jimi has a science-based approach regarding the use of psychedelics as treatments to improve quality of life as well a creative stimulator.  Oh, and he thinks those ayahuasca retreats are a scam. Hooda Brown is the person I envision myself to be in my head. She transferred from a petroleum engineering degree at a private predominantly white college to an HBCU where she could put her naturally bubbly personality and passion for helping other to good use.  As an entrepreneur, Hooda actively hires graduates from HBCUs and pays them a leisure-based income that allows them to open their worlds to travel (because she knows too many people on Xanax who hate what they’re doing). Born and raised in The South by parents who were committed to the connection through organic moments, Hooda grew up knowing nothing beats fear like The Outdoors.  She coped with a life event by taking lessons in tennis, golf, salsa and scuba diving - where she fell hopelessly in love the minute she dipped her head in the ocean.  Hooda shares her adventures in scuba diving and how she's never alone, even on her solo trips.  Oh, I learn why Memphis has the best water in the nation. Whether writing plays as a kid or following up a meeting with a comprehensive manual his boss didn't know he needed, Devin puts care and compassion into everything that he writes.  He finished college with a ton of leadership experience and enough hubris to mail anyone he could find a letter detailing why he'd be their next best speechwriter.  Then life (and student loans) changed the course of his career.  With a strong ties to his family, the eyes of a younger brother upon him, and the motivation to be the proud product of his hometown; Devin is cultivating a path that fulfills his passions and leaves every space better than he found it. Oh, and he used to be Republican. YOU SHOULD KNOW Kid Fury (Devin's future podcast partner...according to me) http://www.thekidfury.com/

If I Tell Them It Will Be One Week, It Will be One Week with Ciecie Designs

Nancy lives in the beautiful Diani Beach, Kenya where she started her custom African-print fashion business that's as colorful and bold as she is. She quickly learned that knowing who her supporters were, pricing, and her integrity were going to be the keys to her success - especially during a pandemic!  She also translates that discipline and general inability to sit still to challenge herself to dive with only her breath and really great fins. It's a long way from the career she thought she'd have as an air hostess, but she wouldn't change a thing. Majoring in "Business Woman"

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.
We talk to my badass friend B about having no comprehension of what a "Business Woman" did, but knew she wanted to be one!  Until she discovered that she could do what's speaks to her soul and making a pretty good living at it, too. My side of the conversation didn't record so you will just get B's wildly entertaining voice to guide you through her parents and siblings influence on her career choices.

Turns Out Our Dad Knows Some Shit (But Don't Tell Him We Said That)

I recorded this episode with my little brother in order to dive into his career path (and so I could get some practice with this podcast thingy).  As we talked, we uncovered just how much our dad impacted our careers and our discussion is really about how our dad shaped who are professionally. Enjoy listening to us giggle our way to seriousness.
