74 - Shed the Shoulds with Dr. Wendy Schofer

This week's episode features pediatrician and life coach Dr. Wendy Schofer. We discuss her journey into becoming a life coach after seeing her patients in her practice struggle with obesity. "Should" is a word I've tried hard to eliminate from my vocabulary and so this episode really was close to home for me. I hope you all enjoy listening to this episode!

Find out more about Dr. Schofer at
www.wendyschofermd.com

Dr Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician, lifestyle physician and family life and weight coach. Her 16+ years in clinical practice has taken her from military medical practice around the world, to primary care and then to nonprofit community work.
She brings experience having difficulty conversations, supporting parents through emotional and behavioral challenges, transitioning (repeatedly!) in the military, using lifestyle as medicine, and a big dose of fun to coaching. Coaching has brought a new level of personal satisfaction and enjoyment to her clinical practice, and is the elusive missing link for helping families enjoy health at home. She helps parents "shed the shoulds" to address the fears around nutrition and overweight, and become the confident role model for family health.

I am a pediatric allergy & immunology fellow, wife and mom to two amazing girls. After what seems like a lifetime long struggle with my weight, I decided that I was done living a life of limitations imposed by my obesity. Little by little, I changed my lifestyle. I changed my diet, introduced exercise and improved my health. While my journey has not and is not easy, it is so rewarding. 38 - I am Enough with Dr. Payal Patel Ghayal

38 - I am Enough with Dr. Payal Patel Ghayal

I am a Pediatric Integrative Physician, wife and mother to two beautiful boys. In 2009 I graduated from Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, NJ. After working 60 hours a week in Private Practice for 3 years, I gave birth to my precious baby boy. My original plan was to return back to work part-time but everything changed once he was born. I decided to be a stay-at-home mom. During this time I also gave birth to my my second son. Before I knew it, 4 years had gone by in beautiful, chaotic, perfect life. After returning to work I realized I was no longer the same practitioner. My years at home as a mom helped me redefine my practice mindset. What I learned theoretically was not necessarily practical for all families. This real life experience combined with my Pediatric Knowledge led me to pursue a certification in Integrative Medicine at the Andrew Weil Center of Integrative Medicine. With this approach, healing takes into account the whole person, including all aspects of lifestyle.  Dr. Ghayal is currently a parent and life coach and obtaining her certification through the Life Coach School.  Follow her at: mdthemindfuldoctor.com, FB-Payal Patel Ghayal, IG @mdthemindfuldoctor

34: Owning Your Own Journey with Dr. Sarah Reck

34: Owning Your Own Journey with Dr. Sarah Reck

I am a physician, a mother of 4, and a fitness junkie!! I am an Anesthesiologist in Milwaukee,
WI where I work full time practicing the full scope of Anesthesia practice. I am also a mother of
4 beautiful boys, ages 2, 4, 6, 8. Juggling work and motherhood is no small feat (especially with
my crazy hours), and one of the ways that I make sure I am able to take care of everyone else is
by taking care of myself. I do this by practicing self-care in the form of exercise.
Fitness has taken on different meanings to me in different phases of my life and currently I feel
like I have come full circle. I was a runner at the onset, but my fitness routine has taken on
different forms as the demands of motherhood have taken over. For years, the best time for
me to exercise was early in the morning or during kids naps and due to this I started doing more
at-home workouts. As my kids are now getting older, I am now training for the New York City
Marathon in Nov, 2020.
In addition to being passionate about fitness, I am also passionate about all things motherhood.
I live by the mantra that you have to take and respect your own journey and try not to compare
it to anyone else’s journey.
Last, but not least, my professional expertise in Anesthesiology and personal interests in
helping mothers live their best lives have recently merged as I created a course to educate
women about pain control options during labor and delivery with an in-depth look at epidural
anesthesia and anesthesia for C-Sections. Throughout my 14 year career in medicine, I have
placed thousands of epidurals and have been dumbfounded how little GOOD education and
information is available about this topic. I have become increasingly frustrated with the fact
that women are very educated about the labor and delivery process, but are little educated
about epidurals. Thus, I set out to create a course filling this void. The course has now been
released and is available for purchase at

18 - Flow with Dr. Lynn Marie Morski

Dr. Lynn Marie Morski is a Mayo Clinic-trained physician in family medicine and sports medicine, as well as an attorney and former adjunct law professor. She hosts the Plant Medicine Podcast, is the founder of Plant Medicine.org, and serves as medical director for WayofLeaf.com.

Dr. Morski worked at the Veterans Administration for nine years, and her biggest frustration during that time was that she was unable to discuss the benefits of many medications she knew could help the veterans she was serving, like cannabinoid treatments and psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Dr. Morski practiced medicine for 14 years, and after leaving clinical medicine, she made it her mission to help fill the gap in the medical community’s knowledge of psychedelics by educating her fellow physicians on the plant medicines and entheogens that could bring life-changing relief to their patients, while also educating potential users on what options they could seek for treatment of their conditions beyond the pharmaceuticals they’re sold on commercials.

In furtherance of this mission, she started the Plant Medicine Podcast to bring scientific researchers, practitioners, and those who have been personally affected by the healing powers of these plants together to help educate the public on what is possible and help further research and decriminalization of these substances. She also founded PlantMedicine.org to serve as a repository of information and resources for those seeking to learn more about these medicines.

14 - Healthspan with Dr. Cybele Mathai

Dr. Cybele Mathai is a Board Certified Internal Medicine MD currently working as a primary care doc at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. She is a single mom with a 13 year old son. She was born in Kerala, India and moved to the suburbs of Chicago when she was 5 and lived there through high school. Dr. Mathai attended medical school at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India and moved back to Chicago, where she completed her intern year. She then moved to Delaware where she completed her internal medicine residency. In 2005 after being sick of the winters, she moved to San Antonio, TX. Her interest in health and wellness started after going through a divorce in 2009 and realizing she needed to take care of herself so she could take care of her son and prevent the chronic medical problems that ran rampant in her family. She always had an interest in preventative medicine so she started talking to her patients about that, started the Couch to 5K running program and eventually ran 2 half marathons. She started working out to different Beachbody programs the first of which was Insanity and she loved it. This cemented her fitness journey. She tried a different variety of diet and nutrition plans, but what really changed her view on health and wellness was the book Deep Nutrition and discovering intermittent fasting. She took courses in Functional Medicine with IFM and loved their nutrition focused way of healing people. She started speaking to her patients about different ways they can reverse Diabetes, metabolic syndrome, gut issues and it made a difference. She is looking into getting a Lifestyle Medicine and Culinary Medicine certification so she can further her knowledge and be even better prepared to help others. Her belief is that we can live long healthy lives with a focus on nutrition, fasting, and movement by improving healthspan and not just lifespan. 13 - Discipline with Veronica Goebel

13 - Discipline with Veronica Goebel

Veronica Goebel is a native Houstonian, wife, and mom of three children. She was an elementary school teacher for 6 years before making the decision to stay home and raise her kids. The transition from working mom to stay-at-home mom was tough at first, and she was forced to take a deep look at her life, habits and relationships. During this time she was asked by a family member to run a marathon. Having never run one mile, she signed up and 6 months later ran her first 26.2. The training process changed her life and taught her the discipline she needed. Her favorite quote is, “Only the disciplined ones are free in life. If you aren’t disciplined, you are a slave to your moods. You are a slave to your passions.” -Eliud Kipchoge. These days you can find her up at 5 am, in bed by 9pm and making the most of the time in between. 5 - Rest & Accountability with Dr. Jill Wener

After 10+ years practicing Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center, Jill knows firsthand what severe stress and burnout feel like. In the midst of her own burnout, she was introduced to Conscious Health Meditation, and it had a profound effect on her resilience and reactivity. Like many healthcare professionals, Jill was initially skeptical of spiritual practices. However, as she learned the science behind Conscious Health Meditation, she embraced the training and marveled at the results of the practice. After 2 years of advanced coursework, Jill completed her 3-month teacher training in Rishikesh, India in April, 2016. Jill strongly believes that there is no 'quick fix'; no singular technique can address all of the physical and emotional challenges of practicing medicine. When she discovered tapping at a conference for women physicians in 2017 and began using it herself, she was amazed at how well it complemented her meditation practice and helped her manage stress. She became certified in tapping in 2019, and finds tremendous joy facilitating incredible growth and benefits with her tapping clients. Jill’s 8+ years of practicing and teaching stress-reduction modalities such as meditation and tapping, combined with the teaching and mentoring skills developed during her academic medical career, her personal experience with burnout, and her intimate understanding of the healthcare system, make her uniquely suited to teach meditation and other stress-reduction techniques to healthcare professionals from all fields. 4 - Flow with Albina Rippy

4 - Flow with Albina Rippy

I'm grateful to be able to continue bringing you these episodes. In this time of uncertainty and chaos in the world, I wanted to bring you some hope. I recorded this episode about a month ago, and things were a little different at that time. There was a threat of this coronavirus, but it was all the way on the other side of the world. Albina chose her word for health and wellness as "flow". She will discuss why she chose that word. I felt this word was important considering what is going on currently. Achieving a flow state in this pandemic to me means adjusting to the ups and downs and by doing so, we can achieve a steady state in our lives, in order to find that new normal. In this episode, you will hear me chat with Albina Rippy, who I have known since 2014 after taking yoga classes at her yoga studio. She describes her word for health and wellness as flow, and she definitely demonstrates that, from moving to a foreign country at age 16, to becoming a CPA, to opening up a yoga studio to then selling her studios to travel the world. Albina Rippy is a serial entrepreneur, success coach, inspirational speaker, hotelierand a world traveler. After a decsde of starting and growing her businesses into thriving communities of yoga, healthy, holistic lifestyle, personal growth and transformation, she sold all of her worldly possessions to travel and explore the world together with her husband and daughters and fluffy dog, Dante.

Albina adds massive value by contributing to the success and happiness of people around the world through her success and business coaching. Find more information about Albina and all that she manifests at

2 - Acceptance with Dr. Heather Colmenter

In this episode, you will meet Dr. Heather Colmenter. Heather and I have known each other since 2007 when I was an intern and she was my upper level resident. But we didn't reconnect again until long after we both had graduated from residency and were in practice. Her word for health and wellness is acceptance, and she will describe her journey as a busy full time anesthesiologist to her diagnosis of breast cancer and how that changed her path. Dr. Colmenter is a board certified anesthesiologist, integrative medicine fellow, and pain management fellow. She is also a breast cancer survivor. Hear her story of acceptance and how she rose above all of her challenges. She credits her support system of her family and friends, her spirituality, and her self care. She co-founded the non-profit organization Hola Bloom (www.holabloom.org) whose mission is to provide breast cancer education and awareness accessible also for Spanish speakers. Heather is also helping to manifest our inaugural WISH Well conference this May in Houston, TX.
