It’s likely been quite naïve on my part (helped, I’m sure, due to many of the privileges I’ve had) but I found it has helped me teach people how to treat me, as I expect to be treated equally, fairly and with respect like any one of my peers or those around me. I haven’t been afraid of being the only woman in a meeting or as part of the team, and my colleagues/firms have always recognized me for my skills and accomplishments" Devi Rajani has been involved in numerous Latin American restructurings with debt totaling over USD$75 billion. In this episode, we interview Chesand Gregory - Entrepreneur - AwardWinning Author Did Santa Wear A Mask?  | 100 Women of Inspiration™ Book Contributor. I am the author of the award-winning book, Did Santa Wear A Mask? inspired by my 4-year-old son when he asked the question that moved me, “Mommy, will Santa wear a mask?”. Did Santa Wear A Mask, endorsed by Amazon – Featured on ABC, FOX, NCB news outlets. The book prominently features the JAG Brothers as they helped solve one of the biggest challenges ever faced at Christmas time; how to safely deliver presents during the COVID-19 outbreak while still adhering to the newly implemented hygiene, physical distancing, and travel restrictions in effect. In 2014, I launched my official company, JChess Designs. JChess was inspired by my son when he was only months old. JChess focuses on the natural and matriarchal side of beauty. As a Human Ecology educator, my focus was to designs a practical solution, supplying an essential tool for lactating mothers. My company offers mothers the ability to breastfeed discreetly in comfort and a more hygienic alternative when in a public setting such as restrooms or waiting areas in clinics and hospitals where sick persons often cough and sneeze nearby. These common dilemmas, combined with how shy most mothers are about breastfeeding in public, highlight the need for my Boobie covers and how useful they would be to moms. Today I am The Gold Medal Mom Choice Honoree, 2021 for Did Santa Wear A Mask, titleholder of The Red Blazer Award for Women in Entrepreneurship, 2021; the Edna Scott Award for the Greatest degree of Diligence in Teaching, 2012 and The Ken Gray Award for innovations in Teaching, 2012. In this episode, we interview Allison McLaughlan | Nadiya Manji – CEO and Founder, Profound Wellness | 100 Women of Inspiration™ Book Contributor. Born in Karachi, Pakistan to a family of 5, I was a naturally intuitive child who was aware of my unique nature as early as the age of 8. My intuition was my guide and I was sensitive to the emotions of the others around me. My inherent curiosity and intuitive qualities lead me to ask deep and meaningful questions that often frustrated the adults around me. I felt rejected and ostracized. Some people, however, were fascinated by my gift and clairvoyant ability to connect with others. I was fortunate to live in an entrepreneurial home, gaining my business sense, while watching both of my parents work hard to support our family. Through these values, I saw my father start from working at a flour mill to, years later, attaining his dream of owning a flour mill. My upbringing planted the seeds of my entrepreneurial spirit laid the groundwork for seeing resilience and consistency in action. Be inspired! In this episode, we interview Allison McLaughlan | CEO, Kelowna Womens Shelter | @kelownawomensshelter | 100 Women of Inspiration™ Book Contributor I was born and raised on the West coast of Scotland before moving to Canada in 2009. I have an older brother and we grew up in what I can only describe as a normal working-class Scottish family. I have two beautiful, strong and outspoken daughter who are forging their own paths in life and it is a joy to watch them grow. My husband is one of the most supportive people I have ever met and his willingness to go where my dreams take us is amazing. I did not enjoy the academic part of school, I did however enjoy the social side and was often in trouble much to my parent’s dismay. As a young person I would often hear these two phrases, “You could achieve so much more if you applied yourself” and “There is too much nonsense in your head”. My childhood labels of “Class clown” “Trouble maker” and “Disruptive” would certainly support this perception. I left education and my home as fast as I could. At the age of 17 I joined The Royal Air Force. A career no one saw me excelling in given my lack of ability to follow the rules and take orders. Despite this lack of confidence I spent four years in this career and loved every minute of it and for the first time in my short life I felt a part of a bigger cause. Be inspired! In this episode, we interview Jennifer Ménard-Shand, Founder & CEO, Staff Shop | 100 Women of Inspiration™ Book Contributor. The Devil Tried to Conquer Me & Lost I am an Indigenous-French-Canadian woman and a successful entrepreneur. I am also lucky to be alive. At age 13, I pointed a knife at my drunken bi-polar stepfather, while my mother lay on the floor with a broken glass pressed into her chest. Would this be the night I couldn’t keep her alive or I would die? For most of my teens, I lived with a mother who chose alcohol and a cycle of abuse over protecting me and I sought my own escape down dark paths filled with bad decisions.  My salvation was my biological father and good people along the way who saw light in a world that was becoming increasingly dark. By age 18, I chose a path that distanced me from my troubled teens. By 30, I had what many define as success – a luxury car, a six-figure salary, a stellar wardrobe door I couldn’t close but I was empty of purpose. I found that true purpose in renewing my Christian faith and in realizing that life was more than profit and materialistic things. In doing so, I opened my heart again to love, vulnerability and authenticity. As the Founder & CEO of Staff Shop, I am blessed with a platform to keep my dreams alive and help others achieve theirs. My story is about faith, passion, and freedom. Be Inspired. Like many newcomers to Canada, my family and I left a war-torn country in search of a better life. We escaped Vietnam as refugees known as “The Boat People”. Imagine close to 300 men, women, and children crammed together on the decks of a leaky 60 ft long wooden boat. These local fishing vessels were not equipped for long ocean voyages and many have lost their lives adrift on them. I am a first-generation Vietnamese Canadian immigrant who grew up in a small Dutch farming community where my primary educational years were with no one that looked like me.  The Vietnamese culture was not well known back then aside from images and accounts of the horrific war – kids would tease me for looking different, made fun of the foods I ate, my accent, and my struggles in learning a new culture. It would be years before we moved to the city where there was more ethnic diversity. Be Inspired. In this episode, we interview Shelley Uvanile-Hesch | CEO of a non-profit organization, Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada | 2020 Women of Inspiration™ Rural Leader Award recipient. In Feb 1999 I met and fell in love with my soul mate. A few years later I started my journey into a new area of the transportation industry, trucking. Not even a year into trucking my husband decided to quit his job at the local cheese factory and obtain his Class A license so we could drive team together. In March 2005 we started a new job at Sharp Transportation Systems Inc where we felt it was going to be a perfect fit and the company we would retire from. Labour Day weekend of 2005 is one I will never forget my oldest son who suffered from mental health issues committed suicide at 18 years of age. As if this was not enough 10 months (2006) later my youngest son died of a drug overdose at 16 yrs old.  Even with therapy he never got over the loss of his older brother. With the love and support of my husband, I continued to move forward in life. Although I was never really the same as I lost a piece of me I could never get back. In late 2014 the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada (WTFC) was born. This was a real struggle as our industry is an “old boys club” and very much male-dominated. At one point I almost gave up but my father reminded me whose daughter I was and that we aren’t quitters. Be Inspired. In this episode, we interview Margaret Adu | President Aomega Group Inc. My singular goal was to work as an architect. I didn't have anything otherwise. I thought, “I’m an architect, and I'm going to work as an architect.” I soon realized that it didn't come that easy. So, I called every architect in Edmonton. I would say, “My name is Margaret Adu, I am a qualified Architect from Ghana, and I want to work as an architect.” And every one of them turned me down. During that time, I was still making the phone calls to architectural firms, and they continued to say no. One of the last ones I called was located very near to where we were living. I realized I could walk in there and make my case in person – so I did. I took my portfolio, my resume, and I barged into their offices. I said, "I just spoke to you, and you said you didn't have a job, but I want a job – I’m not going anywhere –I get it, I don’t have the Canadian, education, experience, and a black woman with a gap in her teeth, who speaks with an accent, and you are thinking I am not suitable for the position, - in fact, I’ll work for free.” One of the partners said, “let me see your portfolio.” He was impressed with my work and knew the university I attended, the renowned Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He closed my portfolio, looked at me and said, "Okay. Take that table. That's your table.” I was excited just to be in an office of architects! I was still working in-home care every night too. After about a month working at the architectural firm, I slept in one day intentionally. I got a frantic phone call saying “Margaret, why are you not here? We have to get this project out!", and I replied. “Okay. Write a contract and I'll be there." That's how I got my first paying job as an architect. I had to prove myself that, I was capable like any other trained Canadian Architect. One home care client changed everything for me. She became like my grandma. She said, "Where did you come from – did you fall from heaven?" I said, "No. Africa." Her family hired me to manage her care, then I realized I was going to have to hire others! The client needed round the clock, 24-hour care. Since I worked as an architect in the daytime, I could take the evening shift and hire for morning and overnight shifts. That’s when I opened my company: Alpha Omega. Be Inspired. In this episode, we interview Desiree Bombenon, CEO & Chief Disruption Officer for SureCall Contact Center | 2019 Women of Inspiration Award Recipient. My story is one of possibilities and opportunities. It is the same story we all share. I started with nothing and worked hard to get to a comfortable place, and I understand that reaching that place happened with lots of support and love along the way. I was fortunate and I am grateful, and in turn, I spend my time looking for ways to provide that same support back to women and girls all over the world so that they see those same possibilities and opportunities that I did. I had a hard life, we were poor immigrants, I had an abusive father, I was bullied and struggled through school, my life could have been over before it ever got started.  Now I am a successful entrepreneur, mother, and wife, and I want to leave a legacy that speaks to the resilience and grit of women. That starts with not just sharing your stories, it is also about sharing your inspirations, your intentions and what got you through the really challenging and tough days. It's about being there for each other past the stories and into the how and why. The real magic is realizing that everything we need to be happy and to survive is within each of us, and then taking that power and using it. Be Inspired. Join our podcast to listen to the inspiring journeys of women blazing the rails, leading by example, ignoring the naysayers and inspiring those around them to take action and dream big. In this episode, we interview, Marnie Grundman - Author, Advocate, Speaker |2019 Women of Inspiration Advocate and Catalyst Award. I began running away at the tender age of 5 years old after being dropped out of a two-story window; by 13, I was living on the streets full-time, having finally left my abusive family for good. I share my personal story with full transparency and vulnerability that draws audiences in as if I were speaking to each person individually. Along with my personal story of overcoming adversity, I work to advocate for our youth experiencing homelessness, delving into the misunderstood topics at the heart of this grave issue. Marnie Grundman has been featured on over 100 major television and radio shows in Canada, the United States and Europe including TEDx, Breakfast Television, Global News, CP24 News, The Marilyn Denis Show, Young Justice, Here and Now CBC, NewsTalk 1010, CJAD, and the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse. A child who belonged to no one, missing at the age of 13, she spent years living on the streets where she experienced the worst of humanity first-hand. In her darkest hours, while living in an apartment complex sauna, she was sure that everyone who knew her had forgotten that she even existed. It was in those desperate hours that she decided she was paying upfront for a better life that lay ahead. What began as a story of healing led to one of triumph, of the power of the human spirit, of one woman's survival against all odds.  Marnie has since become an advocate for the missing, working to change the perception of runaway children so they might finally get the help they desperately need. Marnie speaks on a variety of topics related to children, child abuse, sexual assault, runaways, homeless youth, human trafficking (as a certified Shared Hope ambassador and survivor) and healing from trauma. While her number one mission is to break the stereotypes related to runaways and people experiencing homelessness she also speaks on a variety of topics designed to motivate people to reach beyond the stars. Marnie’s personal experience as a homeless youth and runaway gives her the ability to share a first- hand insight that touches and inspires her audience. She is candid and possesses a vulnerability that allows her to connect on a deep level with her listeners. her to connect on a deep level with her listeners. Be Inspired. Join our podcast to listen to the inspiring journeys of women blazing the rails, leading by example, ignoring the naysayers and inspiring those around them to take action and dream big. In this episode, we interview, Chris Kennedy | Writer | Musician. Chris, first love? Music!! I can’t play a lick, but my entire life has been a draw to all things musical.  Stints at record stores as a teen and a radio, stage and television arts course at SAIT set me up for a Music Director role with a major radio station in Calgary [CHFM]. In radio, I also found an opportunity as a writer, which brought notoriety through awards including a runner-up placing for a coveted CLEO. I moved to Vancouver to pursue a role with any major recording label and found my dream with Warner Brothers. Fourteen years working at building relationships with radio, television, and print media throughout BC. Music downloading sucked the life out of an entire industry, and the life out of my dream job.  Going back to school I channelled me skills into Public Relations and worked in diverse industries from television to banking. Still, something was missing — passion.  That’s the gap where entrepreneurship got under my skin, however, it was a seminar that changed my life. Orlando, 2008, an intense 10-day marathon with Tony Robbins witnessing testimonies of many courageous women expressing suffering even they did not understand, the suffering of their feminine dispossessed by their own masculine. I now seek many answers to a question presumed resolved at birth — what is feminine? Chris is writing a book, and host a podcast: The Virgin The Beauty & The Bitch and his purpose is to inspire the rejection of ingrained social prejudices that segregate people based on sex and gender. To also displace dogmas of intolerance within religions, politics, and media, with a spirit of mutual respect that is humane toward all human beings. CHRISTOPHER: If I must be placed in a box make it the one labelled Servant-Leader. Put me in with those who engineer change for the good of all humanity through deeds inspired by the golden rule. My education comes from paying attention to life, my degree is in making change happen, and my profession is the pursuit of Yin and Yang — the harmony of opposites.  My name is Christopher, I am a writer with an answer on the tip of my pen to a question few ever ask — what it feminine? Join our podcast to listen to the inspiring journeys of women blazing the rails, leading by example, ignoring the naysayers and inspiring those around them to take action and dream big. In this episode, we have the honour of interviewing Jessica Tsang | Founder and Director, Direct Health Solutions | 2018 Women of Inspiration™ Millennial Leader Award. Jessica is a family nurse practitioner on a mission to improve the quality of health care and increase access to health care. After spending years working in ICU and urgent care, she felt exasperated seeing health complications that could have been prevented by early screening and treatment. She started asking her patients why… and they told her that they struggled to get to the clinic for various reasons. For many, leaving the home is simply not feasible due to physical and/or psychological challenges. It is proven that a lack of primary health care leads to a poor quality of health, a poor quality of life, and even early death. Jessica removes the barrier of going to the clinic by bringing medical and laboratory services to people in their homes. The provision of medical house calls are proven to help seniors maintain their independence, support individuals and families to optimize their health, improve end-of-life care for palliative patients in their homes, and divert unnecessary 911 calls and visits to the emergency department. When she is not making house calls, Jessica is shaping the minds of future nurses as a faculty member of Mount Royal University School of Nursing & Midwifery.™ Be Inspired. It is a timely interview as we discuss the impact of the current global economic pandemic, compassion, gratitude for our front-line teams and drawing on the adversity from her past to face the challenges today! Hear Sharilyn's inspiring story of a young strong, academic woman living on the streets as a young teen was inspired to choose a career leading her to work for the Red Cross as a delegate for disaster relief to completing her MBA, to embarking on a solo journey to Argentina to building an award-winning ecological boutique hotel in Argentina where she works to create global sustainability advocates with each guest as they experience up-close experiences with animals in the wild. When she is not creating experiences and running her eco-friendly hotel, she is working on bringing justice to organized crime groups that harass the businesses in the region. Born in Vancouver, Sharilyn Amy launched a humanitarian career in 1996 with the Canadian Red Cross in Calgary. Her role quickly expanded to an international career in disaster response communications that saw her work in the slums of Bangladesh, the flooded regions of China, and Geneva, Switzerland where she managed communications operations globally. Humanitarian work forever changed her views on our personal social responsibility. Returning to Canada to raise her family, Sharilyn worked nationally to help expand a child abuse prevention and anti-bullying program. She then established Go-To Group in 2002, a consultancy that focused on social enterprise and innovation in the non-profit and non-government sectors. In 2008 she completed her MBA and expanded her client base and the number of other consultants working with her. After 12 years of making an impact in the Calgary and Canadian NGO landscape, Sharilyn transitioned with her two children to Argentina. There she established a community economic development tourism project benefiting subsistence goat farming families in the Andes Mountains. Not long after, she developed and now runs an award-winning eco-hotel, Océano Patagonia, in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site and biosphere reserve. Be Inspired. Making a difference in people’s lives from both a business and customer perspective is what drives me forward.” Growing up I was a very sick child fighting for every breath I lived in and out of oxygen tents as asthmatic. I struggled to try to fit in as a girl growing up knowing I was a bit different. I always tried to fit in with other children with activities but, had my limits being asthmatic. Giving up was not part of my life so I joined different teams just to fit in. The turning point of my life was when someone very special. to me passed away suddenly.
