Prisoners of Hope - An Advent Series Part 1

Reporter at an event – interviews all the witnesses to understand the event. There has been no greater event in the history of mankind than the miraculous birth of Jesus. Looking back we can say that this was a turning point in history, but in reality, it was the darkest of times and as Isaiah prophesied in Is 9: 2 “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” They were like prisoners who had but a glimpse of hope that they would see the light again. Zechariah, prophesying about the coming messiah, calls them in Zech 9:12 “Prisoners of Hope”. So this Christmas season we will be doing a series called Prisoners of Hope looking at the lives of some key people who were witnesses to the birth of Jesus.

I love spy, detective, and medical dramas. What do they have in common? They both uncover the truth that lies behind the mystery of a crime or a disease.
You may be wondering about this: why do I fall into the trap of temptation over and over again? I turned away from my sinful past and gave my life to Jesus. I am a Christ follower who is supposed to live a victorious life. Then why does this happen?
James 1:12-21
13 When tempted, no one should say,“God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

What is Zoe? It is an eternal life, purpose-filled, fruitful and divine life. It also means life is yet to be created. The uncreated life with full potential.
What happens when living waters flow? It just flows. If you put a box there, it will flow into the box and then overflow. As a church today, that is the kind of church we are supposed to be.

This is part 5 of a new series on the book 1 Peter. Peter is reminding this reader who is the Jewish diaspora scattered in the region now known as Turkey. He is giving them perspective in the midst of immense persecution by reminding them that they are God’s chosen people who are strangers sojourning through this world but for a short while. In the midst of the trials, Peter reminds them how to continue to live holy lives that bring glory to God.
Today’s passage is like the prosciutto and meat of a good sandwich. 1 Pet 3: 8-22 and 1 peter 4: 12-19, Peter speaks about suffering to people who are undergoing tremendous suffering. He gives their suffering a purpose. He reminds them of Jesus who also suffered in the flesh – the righteous for the unrighteous so that he might bring us to God. And that now he is in heaven, at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers being subject to him.

In all that family magic, we can think of Jesus as just another decoration, an adornment. He is well-known but the question is how well we know him.
