“[Writing] makes me feel like I really exist” Anna
In this episode of Write Enjoy Repeat, Anna remembers how her writing emerged from her love of reading. As a teenager, she wrote a diary and then began to write more in her 20s and 30s, attending workshops and courses. She’s written memor, short stories and is half way through writing a novel.
Anna loves to free write (unedited, stream of consciousness type writing) and does it regularly with a group. She also really enjoys the process of editing her writing. Writing helps Anna to feel anchored and connected and like she really exists. Anna recommends giving writing a go because you might be surprised by what comes out, and it can help you to feel centred.
Amongst Anna’s favourite authors is George Elliott, her favourite book being Middlemarch.
The prompt for this episode is ‘[Writing] makes me feel like I really exist…’ Just write down those words and keep writing for five minutes or more and see what comes out.
Do get in touch if we've inspired you to pick up a pen either again, or for the first time. For more about my work to help people to discover, look after and express themselves through writing, go to cpsdayoff.com.

“Writing, usefully, slows you down” Bob
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Bob remembers enjoying being read to as a child. He enjoys, and feels privileged, to review other people’s writing as an editor, he says it makes him feel part of a community. He likes to use writing to work out what he’s thinking and feeling - making things clearer to himself.
Bob likes to write letters and essays and enjoys writing about ideas, trying his best to write elegantly. Writing gives him confidence, even though he sometimes feels a bit nervous about how his writing will be received.
Bob recommends trying writing because it slows you down. It makes you pause and take stock and you can be surprised by what comes out. Bob has just finished reading ‘Max Perkins: Editor of Genius’ by A Scott Berg and recommends it as he says it’s a model biography and a great life. Do get in touch if we've inspired you to pick up a pen either again, or for the first time. For more about my work to help people to discover, look after and express themselves through writing, go to cpsdayoff.com.

“It’s just you and the page, and no-one else.” Philly
In this episode of Write Enjoy Repeat Philly
remembers writing about Hammy the Hedgehog who she brought to life from her wallpaper.
Philly enjoys the catharsis it brings, “it’s you and the page, and no-one else.” This last phrase is this episode’s prompt. Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes. She says it can also be quite fun, to just get it out and not have to worry. It’s also a way to look back and grow.
It gives her a way to have a direct conversation, even if it’s fiction. Philly recommends you give writing a go because there’s a reason you’re thinking about writing now. There’s nothing to lose and it’s interesting to think like a child again. There will be someone who loves your writing but you won’t know if you don’t do it.
Philly’s favourite author - and hero - is Kurt Vonnegut and God bless you Mr Rosewater is her favourite of his books.

“Writing is an embodied experience” Ruth
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Ruth talks about how writing was a significant part of growing up for her.
Ruth enjoys the physicality of writing and enjoys writing with a pen in the first instance. She finds it a great tool to use as a means of self-expression in a very crowded world. It also gives her a sense of self and of satisfaction.
Ruth recommends writing because you don’t need any special equipment and it’s not hard to do. You can carry a notebook around and observe what’s going on around you.
Ruth really enjoys Dickens - her favourite being A Tale of Two Cities. She also likes contemporary crime fiction and thrillers.
‘Writing is an embodied experience’ is the prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing. Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes.

"Maybe this time..." Sanderson
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Sanderson talks about how he struggled with writing at an early age. He was (much) later diagnosed with ADHD which explained the difficulties he had. Writing continues to be complicated for him, but whilst it stops him sometimes, other times, if all the stars are aligned, he can enjoy it - especially the ability it gives him to bother people he’s not in the room with. He’s once again trying to journal and thinks, “Maybe this time.” He finds it hard to keep habits, but is ready to give it another go.
Sanderson invites you to try writing because it can be a helpful part of the thinking process. Thoughts can be “soupy” and writing can help to clarify things in your own head.
The prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing is “Maybe this time.” Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes.
Sanderson’s favourite author is P.G.Wodehouse. He recommends any of his books, but ‘Pride of the Woosters’ is a good one to try.
Sanderson is the Founder of The Lifefulness Project Subscribe to The LIfefulness Podcast
He also co-founded Sunday Assembly.

“It’s almost a kind of magic” Emma
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Emma remembers thinking “I could do this!” when reading poems when she was 8, and still has all she’s written since that day.
Emma appreciates being able to create her own world. She can bring people back to life, make magic real, and whilst she’s doing all that, it can help her realise what she wants and get a deeper understanding of herself. Emma enjoys writing contemporary fantasy, set in the modern world. Writing gives her power to be self-assured, aware of who she is and direction.
Emma invites you to try writing because "you don’t know what you’re going to come up with until you try.” She says “It’s almost a kind of magic” because you don’t know what’s coming next. She says you don’t have to be good enough or skilled, it’s just you and your journal.
The prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing is “It’s almost a kind of magic.” Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes.
Emma recommends reading Terry Pratchett. Either The Truth or The Wee Free Men from the Tiffany Aching series.

“It's the coming home-ness of it.” Shelagh
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat (link in bio), Shelagh remembers first writing by practicing her lettering in handwriting books and getting callouses from holding onto the pencil too tight.
Shelagh shared her written responses to the prompts which I delivered during a workshop earlier in the year (similar to the questions I ask on the podcast), and enjoyed hearing back what she wrote as she read it out. Writing gives her structure, a way to focus, to notice, to explain and to play. It’s a way to say things to herself and others.
Shelagh invites you to try writing because, “It’s good for you - you’ll feel better!” “You could give yourself some space inside to meet yourself and know that you’re enough.”
The prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing is “The coming home-ness of it.” Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes.
Shelagh recommends The Country Girls by Edna O’Brien.

“Express emotion without judgement” Katie
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Katie talks about how she was encouraged, as a child, to write poetry by her grandmother. Writing still gives her a sense of connection to her grandmother to this day. Now she likes to write for the freedom it gives her. The element of surprise at what falls out of her head when she puts pen to paper. It gives her a great release - a place where she can “express emotion without judgement”, which is the prompt for this episode. It also gives here a sense of who she really is, a sense of identity.
Katie says you should try writing because it’s a great outlet and it gives you an opportunity to reframe and rationalise your thoughts.
The prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing is “Expressing emotion without judgement.” Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes.

“Expressing what I couldn’t say out loud” Justine
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Justine talks about how she and her schoolmates used to write letters to each other, sharing all the secret, juicy stuff.
Now she likes to write as an outlet for her interior world. As an introvert she finds it a very private and safe way to process things - a safe way to be heard. She also enjoys the creative playfulness of writing.
Justine recommends you try writing because if you’re stuck in ‘not writing’, there’s likely to be a block there, even if you’re not aware of it. She says if you give a bit of free writing a go, “You’ll be surprised by what comes up.”
The prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing is ‘Expressing what I couldn’t say out loud...’ Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes.
Justine has several books on the go, but her ‘go to’ for a quick 'part conversation/part rant' read is Caitlin Moran who is a columnist and author. Do get in touch if we've inspired you to pick up a pen either again, or for the first time. "Spark creativity" Lee
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, Lee talks about how he can remember writing at an old fashioned school desk at home when he was 4. He now likes to use writing as a processing tool to get stuff out of his head.
Lee uses writing to chronicle his own life and hopes that some of what he writes might help others in the future, as well as his future self. Lee recommends you try writing because he says you can surprise yourself and discover things about yourself and others. It helps to uncover what’s going on - getting things out and onto paper.
The prompt from this episode if you fancy trying a piece of writing is ‘spark creativity’ which is something Lee enjoys about writing. Just write those words and keep writing, see what comes. Lee’s favourite author is Douglas Coupland, Generation X is his most popular book, but Lee recommends having a look at them all and choosing one that suits you.

In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat, my final Movember guest Shah talks about how he came to writing a bit later in life in university where he took Creative Writing as a degree.

“Getting a load of stuff out of my head” Alex
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat (featuring all male guests for Movember uk.movember.com), Alex talks about how he first started enjoying writing at university when he switched to an Anthropology degree and began essay writing. He enjoys writing for the sake of writing, for the pleasure of it. He enjoys the process and how it helps him to work through things, give him clarity and shape his thinking. Overall he finds it therapeutic.
Alex recommends giving writing a try because you have nothing to lose, there are no rules. You don’t know what will come out and where it will take you. He encourages people to sit down with a pen and paper and just get stuff out of your head. And this is the prompt for today “getting a load of stuff out of my head…” So write down those words and see what comes out, or follow Alex’s advice and pick something that’s been whirring around in your head and write about that.
Alex’s favourite book is God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.

I forgive myself before I write anything” Mark
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat (featuring all male guests for Movember uk.movember.com), Mark talks about how his first memory of writing was writing a short book - complete with pictures - about a Russian scientist who went up in a rocket, but instead of going to the moon actually ended up somewhere like Clacton. He now likes to write for himself and for work, staying open to what can happen. Above all he enjoys the process of writing and sets himself up for success by having a lovely notebook that he enjoys writing in, nice pens, etc. He also gets inspiration for different writing venues, of course, when Lockdown rules allow.
He recently read and enjoyed ‘Girl, Woman, Other’ by Bernardine Evaristo and also recommends Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.
Mark recommends you give writing a go because it’s a useful way to realise what you’re thinking about. The prompt for this episode is ‘I forgive myself before I write anything.” So if you fancy giving some writing a go, write down those words and keep writing.
If you’d like to find out more about Mark, go to www.arrestedart.com/.
Mark has taken part in Movember in the past. As a beard wearer, he allowed his goatee to grow longer and enjoyed playing around with wax to style his moustache. For more information about Movember - movement supporting men’s health - go to uk.movember.com/.

“Imagination can take us anywhere” David
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat (featuring all male guests for Movember uk.movember.com), David talks about how he loved to read and learn as a child and entered writing competitions in comics like the Beano.
He now writes about the criminal justice system and historic organised crime amongst other things. He also likes to write for his mental health and says that being creative is a great coping mechanism to help feel less isolated, give you a voice and release feelings. When David was in prison he did creative writing courses and found that he could be free in his mind even though he wasn’t physically. David says you should give writing a go, especially during the pandemic. He says it’s a great way to mess about with your feelings and re-frame your life.
David has a Podcast called ‘What can be’ where he talks about the criminal justice system and will also be featured in The Best New True Crime Stories: Well-Mannered Crooks, Rogues & Criminals by Mitzi Szereto next year.
His favourite author is Bryce Courtenay, and David recommends ‘The Potato Factory’. If you'd like to give some writing a go today, try writing from the prompt “Imagination can take us anywhere”. Just write those words and keep writing. A few years ago, David did grow a moustache in prison along with his fellow inmates and raised around £200 for Movember. "Express yourself and connect with your thoughts”
In this edition of Write Enjoy Repeat (featuring all male guests for Movember uk.movember.com), Paul talks about how he remembers first writing his wishlist to Santa Claus. He likes to write about different ideas and points of view as well as reflecting on things he’s written when they’ve had some time to age. Paul says you should try writing because “It’s a great way to express yourself and connect with your thoughts.”
If you'd like to give some writing a try today, write from the prompt “Express yourself and connect with your thoughts.” Just write those words and keep writing. Paul will be sporting a moustache during Movember. For more info on Movember - movement supporting men's health - go to uk.movember.com.

“We’re all an extension of each other”
In this edition of the Write Enjoy Repeat podcast, Tamara talks about trying to emanate the poetry of her mother and grandmother as a child, how she now writes for work and for pleasure, though sometimes writing can be hard work when there’s a deadline involved. She said “you can’t sit around and wait to be inspired!”. But when it flows, it’s really enjoyable.. She loves to get inside the heads of the characters she creates… she said “We’re all an extension of each other” which I’ve chosen as the prompt for this edition.. Tamara says you should try writing because it can bring you joy, whether it’s a poem, a story, or a stream of consciousness.
So if you’ve not written in a while, or have never tried, write out those words, then keep writing and see where your pen takes you.
Tamara’s favourite authors are Toni Morrison (recommends Sula) and Thomas Hardy (recommends Tess).

"Everybody has the right to write!”
In this edition of the Write Enjoy Repeat Podcast, Monique talks about wanting to be a poet and scribbling on the back of envelopes when she was a child, getting into Jack Kerouac and now writing in her work as a coach. She says of writing, that “it makes me feel grounded, anchored, centred.” Writing is “a way to have a dialogue with myself.” Monique’s favourite author is Jack Kerouac and recommends his most famous book ‘On the Road’ if you want to give him a try. The writing prompt is of course “Everybody has the right to write!”. So if you’ve not written in a while, or have never tried, write out those words, then keep writing and see where your pen takes you.
If you’d like more information about what Monique does, go to: rewriterewrite.com. Or follow Monique at @the_rewriters on Instagram. Apologies for the crackly recording at my end. In the spirit of supporting what I'm trying to promote in this podcast, ie that what you write is welcome, imperfections and all, I've left it as it was recorded, I hope its not too distracting. "Bringing people together with words" Mandy
In this edition of the Write Enjoy Repeat Podcast, Mandy talks about how writing can help to process what’s on your mind, she even thinks it should be on the NHS (I agree!). She writes (and performs) songs, poetry and bespoke personalised words for special occasions and ceremonies, and loves to "Bring people closer together, with words.” Mandy says you should try writing “Because it’s so healthy, it’s a form of release, opens up your imagination” and so much more… Two of Mandy’s favourite books are Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. The writing prompt for this episode is ‘Bringing people together with words…’. So if you’ve not written in a while, or have never tried, write out those words, then keep writing and see where your pen takes you.

"[Writing is] a friend you can bother any time of day..."
At the end of a family holiday Jimmy wrote poems for all the new friends he’d met. This is his first memory of writing. He later started getting involved with music and lyrics. He enjoys the flexibility of writing, putting thoughts on a page whether he has anything to say or not. “It’s a good barometer of where your head is at - a valuable way to keep track of yourself”. Now as a musician Jimmy writes songs as well writing for himself and can surprise himself in his own lyrics - in how they surface the truth, even if that comes when he hears his own song much later. Jimmy says you should try writing because “writing gives you a way to connect to yourself.” I chose ‘[Writing is] a friend you can bother any time of day” as the prompt from chatting with Jimmy. So if you have a few minutes to spare, why not write down those words and see what comes next. One of Jimmy’s favourite authors is @matthaig. I know Jimmy won’t mind me mentioning that he’s just released a single, ‘You know I won’t’ - James Or, if you’d like to check it out.

"All you need to do is write stuff”
Annie remembers how her mum used to make cassette recordings of her and her little brother putting on plays using a puppet theatre their grandfather made for them. They would write stories for the characters from Hundred Acre Wood, Pooh, Piglet and the rest of the gang. Now, Annie journals and is also about to have her first novel published. She also enjoys writing for fun, with other people. She says you should try writing because "Anyone can do it! All you need to do is write stuff…” which is the prompt from this episode in case you’re inspired to try. Just start writing and see where it goes. Annie’s favourite author is Erin Morgenstern.

"A Pandora's box of emotions"
Mithra talks about her early introduction to Indian love poetry in the form of a cassette which inspired her to write. She now uses writing to uncover and explore her ‘Pandora’s box of emotions’ and loves to be surprised and comforted by what she writes. She likes to explore her thoughts, go wild and be silly. Mithra thinks you should give writing a go because no-one is there to judge you! It’s like being a friend to yourself - penning a letter to yourself, even being your own counsellor. Here’s a writing prompt in case you’re inspired to try: “A Pandora’s box of emotions…”. Just start writing and see where it goes.

"Imagination is limitless."
Kelsey talks about her love of creative writing, how it gives her clarity - making sense of what’s on her mind and how she uses it professionally to help her clients to let go of things using imagery. She first wrote at school about a reverse birth from the point of view of the baby, and still has the piece of writing - it was then that she fell in love with writing. Her favourite author is Sue Townsend who wrote the Adrian Mole books. She re-read the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole recently and it still makes her laugh. A writing prompt if you’re inspired to try is “Imagination is limitless”. Just start writing and see where it goes.

"It's a magical electric shock."
Margot talks about her love of writing, what she uses it for and how she expresses herself creatively. Her first memory of writing was sharing grievances with her parents. As a natural introvert this was the perfect way to communicate. Margot progressed to writing poetry and short stories and also uses writing to work through problems and challenges. Her favourite authors are P. G. Wodehouse and Haruki Murakami. A writing prompt if you fancy putting pen to paper is Margot's description of finding just the right words: "It's a magical electric shock..."
