Episode 116 - Writing Authentic and Story-Driven Songs with Mary Heather Hickman

Episode 116 - Writing Authentic and Story-Driven Songs with Mary Heather Hickman

Writing authentically leads to the most genuine and relatable music. Whether a song is rooted in a personal experience or crafted from an imaginary situation, the goal is to write something that feels true and natural. Storytelling is a technique that allows songwriters to draw listeners into the song in an engaging way while expressing a core message and emotion. I couldn’t be more excited to share my conversation with Mary Heather Hickman focusing on writing authentic and story-driven songs. We talk about being songwriters first, writing edgier and story-driven songs, storytelling in both personal and fictional songs, stepping into the shoes of a song’s character while writing, tapping into our imaginations when writing story songs or ones not inspired by personal experiences, achieving authenticity while performing story songs, sharing the inspiration and story behind songs at shows, getting into the character’s mindset while recording story songs, funny studio memories, the beauty of collaboration in the studio, and much more. We also explore Mary Heather’s experience on the Voice, her single, “Small Town Saturday Night,” and genres in the country music industry. I had a blast chatting with Mary Heather, so I hope you love our conversation.

I’m delighted to welcome Yana back to the show for an open and honest conversation about vulnerability.

Accessibility and disability in the music industry is a topic close to my heart, so I’m delighted to welcome my friend and fellow pop music fan, Holly Tuke, onto the show for an open and honest chat. I truly hope you walk away from this conversation with a greater understanding of why accessibility is important and a fresh perspective on disability in the music industry.

Episode 91 - The Relationship Between Songwriters and Radio Presenters with Chris West

The relationship between songwriters and radio presenters is a special one. Without songwriters, there would be no music for radio stations, and without radio presenters, songwriters wouldn’t have the chance to share their music with listeners worldwide. I’m beyond honored to welcome Chris West onto the show, who is the host of the Tripwire on Blue Torch Radio in Australia, for a fabulous conversation.
The quote for this episode is by Mark Knopfler: “What you’ve got to do is to just try and be true to yourself, and get on with the business of writing songs and trying to do the right thing by the song, which is what I’ve always tried to do. Don’t believe your own publicity, just get on with your life.” Chris and I explore this quote from both the radio presenter and songwriter perspectives. So much goes into staying true to songs and ourselves in the music industry, and we chat about this from many angles. Also, we talk about why “genre” is a word that puts songwriters into unnecessary boxes, how Chris selects music for his show, the importance of being kind and supporting others in the industry, and so much more. I loved having Chris on the show, so I hope our conversation inspires you and gives you a glimpse into the special relationship between songwriters and radio presenters in the independent music world.

Episode 84 - Walking in the Shoes of a Female Artist with Olivia Lynn

Female artists face a lot while we chase our dreams in the music industry. Being an artist comes with many obstacles and requires strength and confidence. On top of the typical challenges, female artists have to jump even more hurdles because of being women. I’m honored to share an outstanding conversation with Olivia Lynn all about walking in the shoes of a female artist.
The quote for this episode is by Taylor Swift: “My hope for the future, not just in the music industry, but in every young girl I meet, is that they all realize their worth and ask for it.” Olivia and I have such an open and honest conversation about being female artists. We talk about challenges that come with being a female artist, overcoming societal expectations, dealing with being treated as inferior to male artists, receiving disrespectful comments, facing situations where the focus is on our looks rather than our music, being brushed off or put down by other female artists, finding our support systems, Olivia’s single, “Ain’t It a Shame,” and much more. My conversation with Olivia gives such a real glimpse into what it’s like walking in the shoes of a female artist. I hope it brings awareness and empowers other female artists to embrace who they are and never settle for less than they deserve.

Episode 79 - Music Industry Expectations with Matteson Gregory

Being an independent artist comes with expectations. It’s easy to get caught up in what others think we should be doing, and comparing ourselves to other artists isn’t healthy. At the end of the day, we have to do what’s best for us and our individual careers. I’m excited to welcome Matteson Gregory back onto the show for an honest conversation about music industry expectations.
The quote for this episode is by Franchesca Ramsey: “Social media, unfortunately, just makes it a lot easier to be jealous. It sets up false expectations of reality, so it’s really easy to look at someone else’s life online and assume that they have everything going great for them and that their life is perfect.” Matteson and I have an open and honest conversation about facing expectations in the music industry. We talk about social media, body image, beauty standards, photo shoots, consistent music releases, and more. Matteson also shares the inspiration behind her new single, “I’ll Be Okay.” I loved having Matteson back on the show, and this is truly another fabulous conversation. I hope you feel seen and inspired after listening.

Episode 63 - Intimidation vs Community in the Music Industry with Laura Mustard

As artists, we often bounce back and forth between having doubts and feeling confident. Much of this has to do with overcoming the intimidation factor of the music industry and feeling like we belong. I’m so excited to share an inspiring conversation with Laura Mustard about intimidation vs community in the music industry.
The quote for this episode is by Daniel Radcliffe: “I think the most creative people veer between ambition and anxiety, self-doubt, and confidence. I definitely can relate to that. We all go through that, ‘Am I doing the right thing? Is this what I’m meant to be doing?’” Laura and I explore intimidation vs community in the music industry in an authentic way. We talk about dealing with doubts and intimidation when we started our journeys, not comparing ourselves to others, the numbers game, social media obstacles, fitting into the music industry, surrounding ourselves with positivity, keeping rejections in perspective, negative comments, connecting with others and finding a sense of community, and more. I love my conversation with Laura, and I hope it brings you comfort and inspires you.

Episode 62 - Anxiety and Self-Esteem in the Music Industry with Emme Lentino

Experiencing anxiety and maintaining a healthy self-esteem are two aspects of being an artist that are important to talk about. I’m honored to welcome Emme Lentino onto the show for a very authentic chat about anxiety and self-esteem in the music industry. Mental health is important to both of us, so what we discuss in this episode is close to our hearts.
The quote for this episode is by Chelsea Handler: “I still get anxiety about things I have to do professionally, and I’m pretty sure I always will. Knowing that’s part of the process helps me focus not on the worry itself but on the sense of accomplishment I’ll feel afterward. I get more from going through with something than from walking away.” Emme and I had such an open and honest conversation about anxiety and self-esteem that I’m honored to share. We talk about overcoming anxiety, balancing what we have to do as songwriters and artists and being mindful of what we can handle, knowing when to take a step back and reflect on how what we’re doing is affecting our creativity and mental health, setting boundaries and having a routine, overcoming performance anxiety, dealing with anxiety while networking with music industry professionals, having a healthy relationship with social media, developing a positive mindset to maintain a healthy self-esteem, protecting our mental health, treating ourselves with kindness, and more. My conversation with Emme is so inspiring, and I hope you enjoy it.

Episode 60 - Trusting Inspiration with Trace Ellis

Inspiration is all around us, and as songwriters, we have to trust inspiration. Sometimes, it can be difficult to know which song ideas hold the most potential. I’m so excited to welcome Trace Ellis onto the show to chat all about trusting inspiration.
The quote for this episode is by Prince: “Sometimes ideas are coming so fast that I have to stop doing one song to get another. But I don’t forget the first one. If it works, it will always be there. It’s like the truth: it will find you and lift you up. And if it ain’t right, it will dissolve like sand on the beach.” Trace and I explore inspiration in such an honest way. We talk about knowing which songs hold potential, writing more than one song at a time, what inspiration means to us, noticing what inspires us to write, overcoming negative thoughts and insecurities that make us doubt our inspiration and songwriting, revisiting songs with a fresh perspective, deciding factors for our best songs, and more. As songwriters and artists, we always have to find ways of staying creative and keeping momentum. Especially because of the reality of the world these past few years, we’ve had to adapt and find new ways to continue doing what we love and moving our careers forward. I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Avery Raquel onto the show for such a fun and honest conversation about staying creative and keeping momentum.
The quote for this episode is by Jimmy Dean: “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” Avery and I recognize that we can’t control what’s thrown at us in our lives, so we have to find ways to adjust to change. We share how we stay creative and find songwriting inspiration, pursue new endeavors to expand our horizons and stay connected with the music industry and beyond, continue to record and release music, and so much more. I loved chatting with Avery. Our conversation is so authentic and full of inspiration and laughs. We hope you enjoy it.

There is so much that goes into touring, and artists have a lot to know and consider before booking a tour. I’m delighted to welcome Connor Christian from the Southern Gothic onto the show to chat all about life on the road.
The quote for this episode is by Elle King: “Touring is my favorite part of being a musician. All the places I’ve traveled and lived affect me in many different ways. Good and bad.” I loved picking Connor’s brain about touring. I myself haven’t gone on tour, so it was so interesting learning about the realities of being on the road from a talented artist who has toured for many years. Connor shares his favorite things about touring, the challenges involved with being on the road, advice for artists thinking about going on tour and what to consider before making decisions, tips on choosing a setlist, and so much more. This conversation is perfect for any artist who would like to tour and anyone who is interested in learning about what goes on behind the scenes of seeing their favorite artists live in concert.

Songwriting retreats are life changing for songwriters. They are incredible for improving the craft of songwriting, networking, collaborating, opening doors, and so much more. I’m beyond excited to welcome Allen Jones and Shanik Hughes onto the show to chat all about songwriting retreats.
The quote for this episode is by Andrea Stolpe: “This is where you can begin to create your tribe, your support system, and a community that will help you find the confidence to move towards your musical goals. There is a potential in every writer.” Allen, Shanik, and I met at Andrea’s Nashville songwriting retreat in November of 2021. The retreat was magical, and the three of us share everything a songwriter should know about attending a retreat. We discuss what songwriters should consider before going to a retreat, why retreats are important for improving the craft of songwriting, co-writing, the benefits of song critiques, the community aspect of retreats, and so much more. I loved sitting down with Allen and Shanik to talk all about songwriting retreats. There is so much valuable information and advice shared during our conversation, and I hope it inspires other songwriters to explore attending a retreat.

Episode 41 - Finding Beauty in the Darkness with Teri Bracken from Bronté Fall

Episode 41 - Finding Beauty in the Darkness with Teri Bracken from Bronté Fall

For songwriters, our craft is a way for us to find beauty in the darkness. Writing songs allows us to process our emotions and what’s going on in our lives. Being able to turn our experiences into songs to share with the world is such a gift. I’m beyond excited to welcome Teri Bracken from Bronté Fall onto the show for such an honest conversation.
The quote for this episode is by Maya Angelou: “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” Teri and I had so much fun chatting, and I’m so glad you get to hear our amazing conversation. We talk about how special songwriting is to us, especially when it comes to processing things we’re going through. The butterfly metaphor is so fitting because it represents who we are as songwriters and the changes we go through when we turn a dark and painful experience into a beautiful song. Teri takes me through her new EP, Winter, and her honesty is so inspiring. Hearing the stories behind the songs and the overall message of the project really opened my heart and mind, and I hope it does the same for you. This conversation is exactly what Write on Track is meant to be. It’s both fun and genuine, and I’m so honored I got to chat with Teri on the show.

Episode 40 - Perfection vs Completion in Songwriting with Daniel Nesci

Episode 40 - Perfection vs Completion in Songwriting with Daniel Nesci

One of the biggest challenges we face as songwriters is knowing when our songs are finished. There are different stages of the writing and recording processes that our songs move through. It’s important for us to remember that the goal is never perfection. Rather, we shoot for completion. Nothing is perfect, and especially because of how creative and subjective music is, we have to keep in mind that our songs won’t reach a level of perfection. As we grow as songwriters, we find ways to determine what our best songs are and know when they’re at a place where we can consider them to be finished. I’m beyond delighted to welcome Daniel Nesci onto the show to dive deep into perfection vs completion in songwriting.
The quote for this episode is by Edith Schaeffer: “People throw away what they could have by insisting on perfection, which they cannot have, and looking for it where they will never find it.” Daniel and I have such a phenomenal conversation. We talk about letting go of expectations, the importance of not comparing ourselves to other songwriters, setting songs aside for a while instead of completely throwing them away, why we are working on more than one song at a time, getting feedback on our songs, and so much more. We share fantastic insights and advice for knowing when songs are finished and ready to be taken to the next step. I loved chatting with Daniel. This conversation is fun, honest, and full of sparkling gems about songwriting.

I’m delighted to bring you a fun and inspiring conversation with the superstars of the outstanding outlaw country band, Nashvillains. I had the absolute honor of chatting with Brett Boyett, Troy Johnson, and Scott Lindsey all about their songwriting success with commercial country music and their transition into writing music for their band ahead of the release of their incredible album, Tumbling Down.
The quote for this episode is by Dustin Lynch: “I draw inspiration from anything and everybody and that’s what country music is to me… real life stories and real life emotions.” My conversation with Brett, Troy, and Scott is truly fantastic. They share so much songwriting wisdom, success stories from writing for country music stars, the difference between writing for other artists and writing for their band, the concept of Tumbling Down, lessons they’ve learned as songwriters in the music industry, and so much more. The country music community is a beautiful family. The songwriters and artists always write and sing about the truth and continue to prove that storytelling is at the heart of the genre. Both Cody and I have a passion for country music, and it was so special getting to chat with him on the show.
The quote for this episode is by Faith Hill: “Country music is the people’s music. It just speaks about real life and about truth and it tells things how they really are.” Cody and I cover so much during our conversation. We talk about why we love country music so much, the artists that inspired us to listen to the genre, Nashville memories, blurring genre lines, equal play and representation in the country music industry, and more. Episode 34 - Songwriting and Honesty with Sarah Louise

Episode 34 - Songwriting and Honesty with Sarah Louise

Being honest is at the heart of songwriting. When we write and release music that is true and meaningful to us, that shines through and leads to an authentic connection with our listeners. It’s not always easy to be honest. In fact, it can be quite scary at times, but our songs sparkle when we’re honest. I couldn’t be more excited to bring you a fantastic conversation with Sarah Louise about songwriting and honesty.
The quote for this episode is by Calum Scott: “I had to be honest in my songwriting for it to be where it is, and it’s always scary wondering if anyone will connect with that.” The conversation Sarah and I had is the true definition of honesty. I loved getting the chance to talk to her about being honest in our own music and the true connection truthful music creates for both songwriters and listeners. As country songwriters, we truly believe in being authentic and writing music that is meaningful to us. This conversation has a little bit of everything. There are laughs and funny stories, and there are also moments that are much deeper and more vulnerable. Sarah and I hope the honesty we share is inspiring.

Episode 32 - The Emotional Journey of Creating an Album with Noah Guthrie

I’m so beyond excited to bring you a very special conversation with Glee star, Noah Guthrie, ahead of the release of his album, Blue Wall. As any artist who created an album knows, it’s a roller coaster ride, and yet, such a rewarding journey. Noah and I chat all about the emotional journey of making an album.
The quote for this episode is by Neil Peart: “What I’ve learned over the years is that the craft of songwriting is trying to take the personal and make it universal—or in the case of telling a story, taking the universal and making it personal.” Noah and I explore the process of creating an album, from writing and recording the songs to all of the marketing involved and much more. What I love so much about our conversation is that it’s completely transparent and honest. Creating an album is incredible, but there are ups and downs and a lot of time and energy goes into it. The process also requires patience, confidence, and being able to go with the flow and do things when the time is right. I truly hope you enjoy this conversation with Noah, and please check out his new album, Blue Wall.

Episode 30 - The Seven Commandments for the Indie Artist with Eddie Davis

Thou shall follow these seven commandments to shine as an indie artist! I couldn’t be more excited to welcome one of my best friends and the captain of Heart of Indie Radio, Eddie Davis, onto the show for an extra special episode of Write on Track. One day, Eddie and I were talking about the things indie artists must do, and we had the thought that these things are almost like commandments. There are so many pieces of advice that we could share, but to start off, we decided to come up with the most important seven. So, please join us while we metaphorically carve these commandments into stone.
The Seven Commandments for the Indie Artist
1. Thou shall perform and record original music.
2. Thou shall rehearse and prepare for live performances and recording sessions.
3. Thou shall be active in all aspects of your brand.
4. Thou shall effectively build an online presence and be educated in digital marketing.
5. Thou shall have realistic goals for all aspects of your music career.
6. Thou shall always strive for selflessness and integrity.
7. Thou shall believe in yourself.
Eddie and I hope you enjoy our very thoughtful and informative conversation about these seven commandments. If you’d like to hear more, please get in touch and I’ll have Eddie hop back on the show!

Episode 29 - Navigating the Music Business with Raquel Aurilia

Episode 29 - Navigating the Music Business with Raquel Aurilia

Music is a business. Sometimes, songwriters and artists forget this very important truth. Of course, we love music and focus a lot of our time and energy on improving our craft and artistry, but at the end of the day, the only way to get anywhere in the music industry is by approaching it as a business. A lot goes into understanding how to navigate the music business, and I’m very excited to welcome Raquel Aurilia onto the show for this conversation.
The quote for this episode is by Faith Hill: “Nashville was totally different than I ever dreamed. I had only seen the music business on television and been to a couple of concerts. I had no clue.” Raquel and I explore what it takes to navigate the music business. The industry is always changing, so it’s extremely important to be educated and aware of what’s going on. Raquel and I talk about many important points, from being authentic to being cautious and knowing who to trust. Also, we discuss copyright, online presence, and so much more. This conversation is packed with a ton of valuable information about what it takes to navigate the music business.

Episode 23 - From a Debut to a Sophomore Project with Allison Leah

It’s a special moment when an artist releases their debut project that introduces them to the music industry. When the sophomore project rolls around, the goal is to create an EP or album that showcases growth. I’m so excited to welcome Allison Leah onto the show to talk about the transition from a debut to a sophomore project.
The quote for this episode is by John Cage: “I can’t understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I’m frightened of the old ones.” With our debut projects out in the world, Allison and I are working on our sophomore projects. We’re both going in a different direction, both sonically and lyrically, and we’re excited to create a project that is fresh and allows us to grow as songwriters and artists. Allison and I share our own journeys and thoughts about shifting gears between our first and second projects. It’s important for us to always be excited about the music we’re creating, and stepping out of our comfort zones and trying new things allows us to do so. This is truly an incredible conversation, and Allison and I hope it inspires other artists out there to explore their music and continue to grow.
