Clark & Chuck Widger: Clark's Manor Part 2
Clark & Chuck Widger: Clark's Manor Part 2
This episode concludes the 2-part series of our discussion with both Charles (Chuck) Widger AND his son Clark. These episodes are slightly different than previous ones, because we get a deeper insight from not only the perspective of the child, Clark, who began to experience mental illness at a young age but ALSO from the parent, Chuck, who along with Clark's mother supported him throughout the experience, and tried to do everything they could to provide their son with the best care plan possible. But it wasn't easy...
Chuck Widger, a high-profile, local philanthropist and financial guru, also shares with us how the family's experience led to the creation of Clark's Manor, a milieu-style living facility for adults with chronic mental illness. The only one of it's kind on the eastern corridor, Clark's Manor provides access to care, community, programs, and activities. They promote overall wellness, growth, and social and vocational skills. Until now, families often spent years searching for this type of care, only to land somewhere in another part of the country. This has been seen as a huge win for Philadelphia in addition to the families and individuals it supports. Chuck's hope is that everyday people can understand and realize it doesn't matter who you are, or how much money you have or don't have - you can still be impacted by mental illness.

Anika Manelkar & Amrita Sundaram: No Therapist, No Problem! PART 2
In today’s episode, we continue our chat with high school juniors, Anika & Amrita about what it’s been like attending high school during the pandemic, social media, pressures of being a teen and their podcast, “No Therapist, No Problem”.
Sometimes, it’s difficult to sit down with a complete stranger and tell them what exactly is on your mind. So, Anika Manelkar and Amrita Sundaram have got your back! As high schoolers, they host the podcast “No Therapist, No Problem!”, which was started in December 2020. They hope to bring a sense of community and provide a safe space for people struggling with mental health, talking through topics such as mental hygiene or even depression so that you don’t have to spill your guts on that couch with a box of Kleenex in a room that probably smells like money and adults. Listen as they bring in their own experiences in mental health and how they’ve grown as teenagers.

Yunio Martinez Part 2
Yunio Martinez Part 2
"[If I was to tell my younger self one thing, I would say...] be who you are, love who you want and express yourself in whatever way you want. And just be kind with everyone else and.... Express kindness!"
This episode of The YANApodcast features Yunio Martinez and his journey as a someone who identifies as a Hispanic gay male from Guatemala navigating mental health, his sexuality, and life as an immigrant to the United States. Mental health was not a subject discussed openly in the Spanish community so he did not know who to turn to, talk to, or reach out to for help when he was experiencing different emotions. He really began to notice his mental health declining during lockdown due to the pandemic. Yunio describes himself as having always been a very active person in the community and so he didn't know what to do with himself without access to all of his typical coping skills. He was trying to figure out a lot on his own by doing research on what mental health actually was when he came across NAMI. NAMI helped him begin to understand what mental health was and ways to manage it.
Having always had a love for soccer, Yunio is extremely passionate about the Casa Soccer League and thrilled to be able to take a leadership role as well as the opportunity to participate in the sport on a regular basis. The Casa Soccer League is a grassroots organization that aims to integrate mental health with physical health. Yunio continuously advocates for mental health and hopes to help shatter the stigma one day.

Olivia Miller - SelfTalkWithLiv Part 2
Olivia Miller - SelfTalkWithLiv Part 2
"I think I would tell my younger self to not be afraid to commit to wanting better for yourself. I think especially as women, we are encouraged to fit roles and that often means pausing what we want or what we want to do to support others; to be there for others; to push others up. And as much as that's important, I think that I would definitely tell my younger self to try to take a chance at a better life - a better future - for me because it's scary but you meet a lot of really cool people doing it who are doing good things and want to be there for you, too."
Today's episode features Part 2 of Olivia's story! Olivia Miller is an 20 year-old advocate from Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. She is currently completing a double major in Peace and Conflict and Social Development Studies with a minor in Political Science at the University of Waterloo.
Olivia is the co-founder and director of the Bridges of Hope Project and Community Ambassador for the Umbrella Project. She is a contributor with several community and national initiatives, including The Activist Collab, The Wilmot Post and more.
Bridges of Hope is a platform by youth for promoting mental health awareness by execution of local events and social media campaigns. Olivia uses this platform to speak at community events and schools, sharing her personal struggles with mental health and conflicts.
Olivia has been open about her journey with mental illness as a young adult. She has discovered through her experiences how important it is to take care of yourself and seek help when you need it, after struggling to graduate high school and suffering harsh anxious episodes. She is passionate about sharing her message with others so they know they are never alone.

Kenneth Bourne Part 2
Kenneth Bourne Part 2
"I would have told [my younger self] that he is deserving; that he is worthy; that he's loved; and that he's safe within himself. Because I always thought I had to be something that I wasn't in order to get safety - like I need to partake in this toxic masculinity exchange from the hood in order to feel safe, but you know, you are safe within yourself!"
In today's episode, we welcome back our guest, Kenneth Bourne, B.A., MSW., LSW. Kenneth is a member of the class of 2012 and the first Boys’ Latin graduate to earn an advanced degree. After receiving his B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Denison University, Kenneth went on to pursue a Masters of Social Work at Rutgers University. His career began in North Philadelphia, serving a diverse community with a disproportionately high rate of unmet healthcare needs at PHMC Care Clinic. He has worked with young adults, in Camden, as a Street Leader Director at Urban Promise Ministries Inc. and, in Philadelphia, as a Community Intervention Specialist with Drexel University Healing Hurt People program. As a Community Intervention Specialist he provided acute intervention, outreach, counseling, and case management for young victims of interpersonal violence between the ages of 18 and 35. Kenneth brought his talents back to Boys’ Latin often, partnering with school, city, and state officials on the #blackdegreesmatter campaign, as well as, hosting discussions on Black male identity and overcoming higher education obstacles. He currently serves as an alumni liaison to the school’s Board of Trustees. He also worked at Boys’ Latin Middle School as the only school social worker for 300+ students and families. He refers to himself as a passionate social change agent, and recently launched his startup business Bourne ANEW to propel the life success of Black boys and young men.

Christine XP Part 2
Christine XP Part 2
"Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind [that I would tell my younger self] is so cliché but also so true is: be yourself – but I want to expand on that because I think that it’s so much more than just being yourself. I would say – you know, there was a point at that time where I was pretty hopeless, so I would just say: WAIT. Just wait. Because if you give up now, you’re never going to see what happens with you in the future so if you can just wait – wait it out – you can make it through this – don’t give up – you’ll get through to where you’re happy again. And I think that being yourself helps that wait."
Christine Marie Frey (referred to as Christine XP) is an extraordinary rising youth mental health advocate. At the age of 16, Christine XP wrote and self-published her autobiography “Brain XP: Living with Mental Illness, A Young Teenager’s Perspective”, which has since become an international award-winning book. Christine XP also founded the teen mental health project & community Brain XP. Chuck Norton and "Taco 'Bout It"
Chuck Norton and "Taco 'Bout It"
"I would tell my younger self to take more risks. I think I'd be a lot more comfortable in certain situations if I knew how to take risks before. I feel like now when I am sometimes uncomfortable in social situations, school or sports, I feel like I wish I could go back and learn how to fail." Today's episode features high school senior, Chuck Norton! Chuck has been working on Taco 'Bout It, a mental health card game, for a little over two years. Chuck realized that he wasn't effectively communicating with his parents about his mental health, but he knew that he enjoyed playing card games with them; he wanted to combine those two ideas so that families could engage in challenging conversations in a lower stakes and more enjoyable environment.

Christina is a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. degree in Neuroscience. She has been working on eating disorder advocacy efforts since she was 14 years old, after surviving her personal struggle with anorexia. Christina believes that participating in the programs offered by the Body Empowerment Project would have prevented her eating disorder. In her free time, she can be found caring for her collection of plants and baking desserts for friends and family.

Lindsay Meehan Mayo Part 2
Lindsay Meehan Mayo Part 2
Part 2 of Lindsay Meehan Mayo's story! Lindsay is a Philly native and an open book when it comes to mental health and mental health advocacy. Lindsay brings lived experience to the table, as she's had her own battles and she's seen loved ones fight, too. Lindsay has struggled with various mental health challenges including OCD, anxiety/depression, and an eating disorder. But, with those battles, Lindsay found hope and chose a path of recovery. She recently celebrated her 5 year anniversary in ED recovery!
Until 2020, Lindsay was a pastry chef in Philadelphia. When the pandemic hit, bringing the restaurant industry to a halt, Lindsay took the opportunity to leap into a new career path; she had been contemplating this for a long time. With volunteer hours in the eating disorder recovery world, stability in her own mental health journey, and a lot of passion, Lindsay was welcomed into the mental health field with open arms. Fast forward through some interviews and class and training: She is now Lead Certified Peer Support Specialist on the Peer Support Warmline with Access Service Mont Co. In this role, Lindsay strives to give back to a community who experiences things that aren't always talked about or supported by others, a vulnerable community. She strives to build mutually empowered relationships with communities that want a helping hand with their mental health. Though daunting, changing careers in her 30s has proven to be incredibly fulfilling to Lindsay's life as a whole!
Outside of her CPS role, Lindsay finds joy at home with her spouse, and their 2 bunnies, and with her family and friends. Lindsay shares her creativity through painting and online community. And, she finds peace and happiness in outdoor adventures.

Dylan Dunlap
Dylan Dunlap
The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Dylan Dunlap developed a love for music at a very young age. As a teen, Dylan left the prestigious Berklee College of Music to get a head start on his music career and started busking in his hometown of Burbank, CA. Inspired by the likes of Coldplay and Mumford & Sons, he simultaneously fashioned a singular style, infusing cinematic scope and alternative eloquence into power pop. Over the last two years, he supported OneRepublic, toured across the US and the UK and released what would become his breakout single, “If That’s Alright,” which has amassed over 28 million streams. On top of his artist pursuits, Dylan has put in countless hours of work to raise awareness around mental health, receiving the “Fighting Stigma Rising Star” award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Delv
Delv
Delv is an indie folk project by songwriter and licensed therapist Kris Leigh. Both her work as an artist and therapist compliment one another, as the themes in her music circulate self healing, processing emotional experiences and the evolution of human growth. Her most recent record, "Gardens and Plantings", still in motion, is a reflection of time during the pandemic and liberation of all the stories gathered from hours of deep listening. Each song is being slowly released, one month at a time, mirroring the slow, introspective pacing and the challenging of traditional structure.

Shannon Hannaway
Today's episode features Shannon Hannaway! Shannon is a Colorado native, and a recent graduate of Montana State University with a degree in History: Science, Environment, Technology and Society. She is active in public policy work through organizations such as NAMI CO, NAMI Boulder, Mental Health Colorado, and the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado. As Miss Mile High, a local title within the Miss America Organization, she uses her personal experience with mental illness to highlight not only the need for destigmatization, but for the importance of action to improve access to behavioral health treatment. Shannon's personal experience with mental illness includes a childhood of anxiety and panic disorder, which later shifted into PTSD and psychotic depression in college. Her childhood and college experiences illuminated the process and challenges in getting treatment. As a result of her recovery, Shannon became involved with end of life care, Mental Health Summits, Mental Health First Aid training, and Psychiatric Advance Directives. She hopes that by including action alongside destigmatization, more people can get treatment and improve their mental health.

Carly Hester's Story
Carly Hester's Story
In today's episode, the seats are reversed as co-host Carly Hester shares her own personal story and what brought her to the mental health field and to become such a passionate advocate! We asked her a few questions just to give an idea of who she is...
Carly's Role at NAMI Philly: Affiliate Director
What is your relationship to mental health? I personally have my own mental health journey that today I am able to openly share with others. Sharing my story has been such a healing experience and something I will continue to do. I consider myself to be a person who is growing and overcoming each and every day. I am also a friend and family member of individuals living with mental illness and will forever be the best advocate I can be.
What is your most effective coping skill? Positive affirmations and quiet reflection.
What does recovery mean to you? To me, recovery means consciously waking up and choosing, joy, health and hope and not letting my past define who I am.
What is the best way to start your day? Coffee, quiet time and then a good podcast on my way to the office!
What three words best describe you? Bold. Resilient. Tenacious.
Other than mental health, what is a subject you are passionate about? Foster care and adoption! I am a proud foster momma!
What is your favorite ice cream flavor? I have never met an ice cream I did not like, but if I HAD to pick, I would pick Java Chip or some sort of coffee flavor!

Mary Keleher: Understanding ADHD
Mary Keleher: Understanding ADHD
Mary Keleher was born and raised in Manchester, NH. Mary holds a degree in dance from Dean College and is the current titleholder for the Miss Berlin-Gorham Scholarship Program, a preliminary competition through the Miss New Hampshire and Miss America Scholarship Programs. She chose "Understanding ADHD" for her Social Impact Initiative as the current Miss Berlin-Gorham because of the lack of understanding people have of the disorder. Mary has a diagnosis of ADHD inattentive type and was not diagnosed until she was 18 years old. It is her belief that she didn’t receive a diagnosis until she was an adult because she didn’t fit the hyperactive stereotype, and because she had OCD and anxiety as a child that masked a lot of her symptoms. When Mary finally received a diagnosis of ADHD, she had a hard time believing that it was “just ADHD.” She thought that she had to have additional learning or neurological disorders because of the amount of impairment she felt, and that is when she realized that ADHD is a lot bigger deal than society makes it out to be. The goal of her platform is to help people understand what ADHD is and that it is not made up.

Nicole Steinhagen
Nicole Steinhagen
Nicole Steinhagen grew up in South Portland, Maine and is currently a Sophomore at Southern Maine Community College studying business. Nicole has also been studying Martial Arts for 18 years, holds a black belt and has 4 world championship titles. She is also the current Miss Greater Portland and gearing up for Miss Maine in June of this year! After losing her grandfather 5 years ago to suicide, she feels it is more important than ever to end the silence and help others speak up around the topic of suicide.
In the wake of her grandfathers suicide, Nicole had a rough few years, both physically and mentally. She ended up losing about 15 pounds that she didn't have to begin with. She would barely have a meal during the day because she was consistently busy and wouldn't remember to eat. She also distanced herself from anything and everything that would remind her of her grandpa.
A few years ago, Nicole found the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Up until then she had never known that suicide was preventable and mental health was more than depression and anxiety. In Maine, schools do not talk about suicide and mental health but with AFSP she is working to let everyone know that it's okay to not be okay and there's resources out there for everyone to access!

Becca Lane's Story
Becca Lane's Story
Today we dive into co-host, Becca Lane's personal story and how she came to be passionate about mental health education, advocacy and support! Becca answers a few questions for us to give an idea of who she is...
Becca's Role at NAMI Philly: Young Adult Education Specialist
What is your relationship to mental health? I live with mental health conditions such as Bipolar II disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and am a grateful recovering alcoholic and addict. I am an active participant in my recovery and dedicate my time using my own experience to help others. I run our teen mental health awareness education program, Ending the Silence, which involves going out to local schools and youth programs to talk about my own personal recovery journey as well as educate the teens about identifying warning signs and how to find help for themselves and their friends. I struggled severely with my mental illness during my teen years, so it’s incredibly rewarding for me to show teens that help is available and that they are not alone.
What is your most effective coping skill? Meditation and reaching out to my support system.
What does recovery mean to you? I view recovery as each step I take away from a point of crisis and towards a life full of hope and happiness.
Best way to start my day: A large cup of french vanilla coffee, a hot shower and a guided meditation with positive affirmations.
What three words best describe you? Resilient. Compassionate. Warrior.
Other than mental health, what is a subject you are passionate about? Game of Thrones.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor? This is a trick question. I don’t discriminate.

Cortez Patton Part 2
Cortez is back for Part 2 of his incredible story of strength and resilience! Be sure to check out Part 1 before listening to this episode!
Cortez Patton is a 17 year old entrepreneur in the 12th grade; born and raised in West Philadelphia. He started to pay more attention to the importance of mental health after he began to see people close to him struggling. Even though he had dealt with his own mental health in the past, he hadn't truly understood the importance until he really saw the people he cared about struggling. So, since he likes seeing people happy and coming together, he started a event called Philly Showcase, which is a talent show to highlight the unique talent within teens in Philadelphia, but the main goal is to raise awareness about teen mental health. He believes that teen mental health often gets overlooked and so now it’s time to END THE SILENCE! Cortez believes that his past has led him to do great things in life and that while he may not be THE change, he can at least be 1% of it!

Shadiqua Smith-Spann
Shadiqua Smith-Spann
Today's guest is our very own NAMI Philly Ending the Silence presenter, Shadiqua Smith-Spann. Shadiqua's passion for mental health began with her own struggles. Growing up in an environment where mental health discussions were rejected, she didn't have any support to guide her in the process of healing. However, a series of traumatic events and numerous suicide attempts gave birth to a strong desire to improve the conditions of Shadiqua's life. As for many others, the process of seeking support became more and more discouraging. The countless obstacles as well as not knowing where to start triggered a severe mental breakdown. During her recovery, Shadiqua discovered where and how to begin her journey. Shadiqua's own path was revealed to her and many of the doors that were once closed, opened. Her experiences gave her the necessary resources and insight to enrich her community.
Shadiqua is now certified as a Certified Peer Specialist and Community Health Worker. She used both her training and experience to started her own Nonprofit Uponyaji, which means "healing" in Swahili. Shadiqua's nonprofit is based in Philadelphia, Pa and it aims to provide mental health resources and spread awareness within the black community. Her goal is to share her stories, experience, and knowledge with her community through her nonprofit.

Mackenzie Nicole
Mackenzie Nicole
In the Spring of 2018, singer, songwriter, and Strange Main artist Mackenzie Nicole unveiled her full-length debut album, The Edge, to critical acclaim. Its songs tallied over 1 million Spotify streams, and her videos totaled over 8 million-plus views as she played to sold-out crowds coast-to-coast. After nearly a decade of diligently grinding, the year marked a much deserved and significant artistic breakthrough for the then 18-year-old. All her hard work was starting to pay off, however, for Mackenzie it was the worst time in her life. On a deeper level, she suffered a mental breakdown and fell into thoughts of suicide. Through a combination of self-actualization and therapy, she returned stronger than ever before. When her psychiatrist diagnosed her with bipolar 1 disorder, she says she felt a sense of relief. She started writing and recording and shares this struggle and subsequent victory by way of her latest full-length album Mystic.

Rohan Sharma aka Rx Mundi
Rohan Sharma aka Rx Mundi
Rx Mundi (Rohan Sharma) is a rap artist, published author, and mental health advocate from Bucks County, PA. He began public speaking subsequent to serving a twenty-three month jail sentence after pleading guilty to an armed robbery that took place in the Fall of 2011. At the time, Rohan was a medical student at Drexel University. However, due to his mental illness being misdiagnosed, he was given the wrong medication which induced a psychotic episode. It was during his jail sentence that Rohan read over 60 books, including many from the self-help genre, which ignited his passion for mental health. He now shares his story as an example of what happens when you don’t speak up and get help for your mental health issues, as well as to demonstrate the amazing potential we all have when we utilize the power of positive thinking. Having now been a speaker for over three years, his story of hope and resilience has inspired thousands in the greater Philadelphia area and beyond. Since then, Rx Mundi has launched his music, as well as public speaking career, helping his audiences achieve mental health success. Aside from reading self-help books, Rohan also learned to express himself in jail through poetry and rap. He now has a Youtube Channel under the rap name 'Rx Mundi', where you can find a preview of his debut EP "The Mandela Effect". Last, he has documented his story in a memoir titled "A Very Thin Line: My Journey With Bipolar", which was published in November of last year.
