92. How To Use Your 401(K) To Pursue Financial Independence | Marie Coleman-Johns & Stephanie Stockwell, Winenance

Marie Coleman-Johns and Stephanie Stockwell, aka, the “Sisters of Financial Independence,” are personal finance educators and the founders of Winenance. Through their weekly YouTube show and podcast, investing workshops, and blog posts, they help women and people of color spend more intentionally, learn how to invest and grow wealth, and build a life of financial freedom. Having grown up financially insecure, they started out repeating the bad money habits they learned from their parents. Though they turned things around in their 20s through growing their careers, by their early 30s, they realized that the savings sitting in their bank account wasn't actually growing, and that wealth still eluded them. They soon found the FIRE movement and learned how to master their 401Ks and invest. Wanting to share the keys to investing with their friends and family, they took what they learned, built a PowerPoint Presentation, and started hosting Winenance Nights. Learn more at winenanceFI.com.

87. How To Heal Your Money Trauma | Araceliz Gomes, The Latina Investor

87. How To Heal Your Money Trauma | Araceliz Gomes, The Latina Investor

Araceliz Gomes is the creator of The Latina Investor, a platform dedicated to educating Gen-Z and Millennials on personal finance, investing and entrepreneurship. She is creating a vibrant movement of diverse individuals who are ready to stand in their power when it comes to all things mindset and money! Aracelis created The Latina Investor after realizing how unprepared she was to handle personal finances after graduating college.

In Episode 87, Araceliz talks about:

Inheriting toxic money beliefs— as first generation wealth-builders, the examples we had growing up of how to manage money may not actually be helpful in our wealth-building journey. Maybe they were even filled with a lot of pain and hardship. It’s important to identify these inherited beliefs so that we do not let them govern our journeys. Listen to hear how Araceliz identified these in her own life. How a resistance to rest might be a sign of inherited trauma— as a platform that advocates for diversifying your income streams, we are no strangers to hustle culture. It is very easy to let the hustle mentality take over our whole lives. Did you ever stop to wonder where you got this mindset from? Hustling isn’t inherently a problem; it only becomes a problem when we do not know how to rest. Machismo in money talk— raise your hand if you’ve ever been talked back to after you questioned a man’s decisions with communal money. Some of what Araceliz had to unlearn came from witnessing this in her own family. Practical steps to starting your financial journey— Araceliz’ first tip is to start the work of unlearning inherited money traumas. After this, she goes into explaining things like toxic debt, index funds, investment accounts, and more. Why she invests while still carrying student loans— on the show, we’ve had people on both ends! Listen to hear Araceliz’ reason for continuing to invest despite still having student loans.

We hope this episode gives you the start you need to begin working on your mental and emotional health while pursuing your financial goals. This episode is filled with so many truth-bombs; we are so excited for you all to listen!

Oscar & German Buendia are are the founders of REI Brothers and GoodDay Capital. REI Brothers is a social media outreach and education platform, where Oscar & German showcase their podcast, blog, and projects. Good Day Capital is their Real Estate Investing Firm for the purpose of syndicating apartment buildings.⁣

⁣German Buendia is an active duty  Gunnery Sergeant, in the United States  Marine Corps, and has been serving the nation for the last 18 years.  Currently Stationed at Camp Pendleton,  California, where he is fully pursuing his dream of owning and operating multi family real estate and helping others  achieve their financial freedom goals. ⁣

In 2016, German began his real estate investing experience by fixing and flipping houses  in Southern California. During that time, he realized that buy and hold real estate  strategy aligned best with his goals. He currently owns and operates 20 units worth $1.5 Mil. and plans to retire from the Marine Corps in 2021, and from there fully devote his time and skills  to continue growing his real estate portfolio and business.⁣

Oscar has been investing in real estate since 2013. He initially attempted different real  estate strategies such as wholesaling and fix & flip with a local area group. Quickly, he realized that this was not his niche. In 2017, he went the buy and hold route and  purchased his first duplex. For this, he was able to buy below market value, do a minor  rehab and force appreciate the asset. This opened his eyes to the benefits and long-haul  journey to financial freedom.⁣

In 2019, Oscar partnered up with his brother German, with the initial intention to  purchase a few properties in Ohio. That soon changed when they found a 20-unit rental  portfolio. From there they networked and problem solved their way to purchasing this  portfolio. Currently they are working towards stabilization and then disposition of  assets. Their eyes were open on how to scale to larger assets, and from there they have set their sites on raising capital and apartment syndication.
