ARIELLA GROSSE, LMSW - How to Find Your Therapist Soulmate
ARIELLA GROSSE, LMSW - How to Find Your Therapist Soulmate
This week we're going back to basics with my friend and mentor, Ariella Grosse! I first met Ariella when I was looking into graduate schools for social work and was in desperate need of assistance in navigating the application process. At the time, Ariella was a first-year MSW student at the Columbia School of Social Work, and she was instrumental in my decision to apply and ultimately be accepted into this program! Now Ariella is a full-time psychotherapist at Prescott Psychotherapy and Wellness. Associates in New York City. In this episode, Ariella walks through the best way to find a therapist and explains the nuances between different types of mental health professionals (LCSWs, LMHCs, LPCs, LMSWs, etc.) as well as the various therapeutic modalities (CBT, DBT, ACT, etc.) She also provides advice on the best questions you should be asking your prospective therapist on that initial (FREE!) phone call consultation! If you're interested in learning more about Ariella and possibly working with her directly, you can follow her on Instagram @ariellagrosselmsw.

ANNIE GRACE - This Naked Mind
ANNIE GRACE - This Naked Mind
Today I am so excited to share my conversation with Annie Grace, who is the author of This Naked Mind, a science-based and compassion-led approach to reinvent your relationship with alcohol.
At 26, Annie Grace was the youngest Vice President in a multinational company’s history, and her drinking career began in earnest; by 35, she was in a global C-level marketing role, responsible for 28 countries. Drinking close to two bottles of wine a night became a ritual. Annie Grace’s professional success came at a personal price she no longer wanted to pay. She knew alcohol was no longer serving her. Yet, she didn’t want to suffer through life in a daily battle for sobriety, feeling deprived and constantly trying to avoid temptation.
Annie Grace revamped her own relationship with alcohol — she stripped it of its power and changed her beliefs about booze being a reward — and today she helps others across the globe do the same. Her approach helps people where rehabs have not. She’s created a brand new way to look at the role of alcohol in our lives, establishing a safe space for those who question their drinking but haven’t self-diagnosed as alcoholics stuck in denial of an incurable disease. Annie Grace preaches compassion, knowing its power over shame and blame is the best way to achieve lasting change. And, she offers a proven alternative to the largely ineffective recipe for so-called “success”—the one that says anything less than 100% abstinence is failure. Annie Grace doesn’t teach people how to be sober; she helps them quash their desire to drink in the first place.

JOANNE IRIZARRY - Nothing To Wine About
JOANNE IRIZARRY - Nothing To Wine About
She's back! When I decided to become alcohol-free, the first person to reach out and congratulate me was the one and only Joanne Irizarry. I met Joanne two years ago when I invited her to be a guest on my podcast and talk about A Safe Place Inside Your Head, a non-profit she co-founded to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Since then, Joanne has been a friend, a mentor, and a mother figure for me in Austin. With her deep-seated entrepreneurial spirit, no pun-intended, Joanne has decided to help share he knowledge of zero-proof wines with the Austin community. In this episode, Joanne and I try eight different N/A wines and give our honest opinions of them. Be sure to check out the YouTube video to see what the wines look like in real life! And don't forget to follow Joanne at @therealjoanneirizarry, @zeroproofatx, @thesocialclubatx, and @asafeplaceinsideyourhead.

SARAH LEVY - Blackouts, the Bachelor, and Aaron Burr
This week I am so excited to share my conversation with Sarah Levy, a writer and author who explores sobriety, relationships, culture, and identity. Sarah has appeared in The New York Times, TIME, The Cut, Vogue, Glamour, Elle, Refinery29, and Cosmopolitan, among other publications. She just released her first book, a memoir called Drinking Games, where she discusses her journey to sobriety, among so many other things. I promise you will find solace in her words. You can follow Sarah on Instagram @sarahllevy and be sure to buy her book Drinking Games!

CARL RADKE - Alcohol's Leading Role in Reality Television
CARL RADKE - Alcohol's Leading Role in Reality Television
I am officially 50 days sober! And what better way to celebrate than by releasing a new episode with Carl Radke from Bravo's Summer House!
Summer House is a reality show featuring about ten professionals in their twenties and thirties who work in Manhattan and spend their summer weekends in a share house in Montauk. The show centers around the drama that inevitably unfolds over the course of the summer and the season. Carl has been a member of the cast since its 2017 inception, and the world has watched him go through numerous ups and downs. Perhaps one of the most heartbreaking of these intimate moments occurred in Season 6, when Carl discovered that his older brother had passed away from an overdose after a long battle with addiction and mental illness. The death of Carl's brother was a major reason why the reality TV star decided to reexamine his own drinking habits and eventually cut alcohol out of his life for good.
In this episode, I speak to Carl about his experience becoming sober after enduring such a tragedy. We also dive into other topics, including the invaluable role that alcohol plays in reality television. Be sure to listen to our conversation and then watch the newest episode of Summer House tonight at 9:00 PM EST. You can also follow Carl on Instagram @carlradke.

LINDSEY METSELAAR - We Met In Recovery
LINDSEY METSELAAR - We Met In Recovery
This week, in the spirit of Valentine's Day, I was so lucky to have Lindsey Metselaar BACK on the podcast. Lindsey is the host of one of my favorite podcasts of all time, We Met At Acme. Three years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Lindsey and talk about when and if we should disclose our mental health conditions while dating. (Check out the episode titled "We Met At Therapy" to hear the OG conversation). This week, Lindsey discusses her own journey to sobriety and answers some burning question I have about sober dating. Be sure to follow Lindsey and her podcast @lindzmetz and @wemetatacme, respectively. We Met At Acme has a new episode every Sunday!

ELIZABETH DOPP - Why Becoming Sober Is a Reward and Not a Punishment
ELIZABETH DOPP - Why Becoming Sober Is a Reward and Not a Punishment
I have officially hit my one month of sobriety milestone! For the first time in a really long time, I feel truly proud of myself for putting my mind to something and sticking with it. My conversation with Elizabeth was definitely a motivating factor to help me push through the tough days, and I am so grateful that she agreed to be a guest on Solace and the City. In this episode, Elizabeth talks about her previous life as a party girl and why she decided to stop drinking. We also talk a lot about the intersection between mental health and "alcoholism" (I am using quotes because I still haven't decided what this term means to me). Before she quit drinking, Elizabeth thought that she had some sort of mood disorder because of the way her temper would drastically change after a glass or two. Now, she realizes that alcohol was not so much a coping tool to deal with her mental health conditions but rather the cause of them. Be sure to check out Elizabeth on TikTok and Instagram @elizabethdopp and elizabeth_dopp, respectively.

CHRIS SHATEK - Sobriety Preserves Our Most Precious Resource
CHRIS SHATEK - Sobriety Preserves Our Most Precious Resource
I am officially 29 days sober! This is also an exciting time for me to share my conversation with Chris Shatek, a Life and Sobriety Coach for High-Functioning Drinkers.
Before becoming a life coach, Chris spent over 20 years in the radio business as an on-air personality. He entertained hundreds of thousands of people and met celebrities from Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Hulk Hogan, and Will Smith. While he loved his job in radio broadcasting, he wanted to do something that was more fulfilling. But before making this career switch, Chris had to overcome a 15-year habit of excessive drinking. Now he helps people find the peace that comes when alcohol is no longer running their lives. Chris works with people to change their relationship with alcohol, because what was once his weakness, is now his strength. You can follow Chris on Instagram and TikTok @sobercoachchris!

ALLY MCILWRAITH - Sobriety Gives So Much More Than It Takes
ALLY MCILWRAITH - Sobriety Gives So Much More Than It Takes
When I first started my sobriety journey, I spent hours scrolling through TikTok to not only search for potential guests, but also to find a sober community that I could lean on in the inevitable tough times that I would face down the road. And then I came across Ally, this beautiful, radiant, successful woman exuding a sense of confidence a self-assurance that I was striving to emulate. At the time, Ally only had one video on TikTok where she talked about her sobriety. However, because she spent the entire 3-minutes talking about all that was to be gained through sobriety rather than what would be lost, Ally was the inspiration I needed to jump into my new life without alcohol.
Without a doubt, my interview with Ally was one of my favorites to date. She shed light on all of the benefits of being sober, the ways in which the binge drinking culture has become so normalized in our society, and how removing alcohol from first dates has made dating so much more productive. (Don't worry -- we'll talk more about sober dating in episodes to come). I encourage everyone who has ever wanted to reevaluate their relationship with alcohol to listen to this episode. I promise you will NOT be disappointed!

CRISSY RODRIGUEZ - Finding Your Inner Child Through Sobriety
CRISSY RODRIGUEZ - Finding Your Inner Child Through Sobriety
I'm officially fifteen days sober! When I first decided to create this "Solace and Sobriety" series, I spent hours scrolling through TikTok to find the perfect guests. I came across Crissy's profile and was so inspired by her own journey and decided to take a leap and send her a DM. Within a few hours, Crissy agreed to come on the podcast, and I am overjoyed to be sharing our conversation with you all! In this episode, Crissy talks about the ways in which the alcohol industry has made it seem impossible to stop drinking, how being sober has made her a better mother, and how being a mother has taught Crissy to be kinder to herself. You can follow Crissy's journey on TikTok and Instagram @imcrisssyrodriguez.

HOPE WOODARD - Finding Connection and Community Through Sobriety
HOPE WOODARD - Finding Connection and Community Through Sobriety
I am officially one-week sober! In this week's episode, I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing my friend Hope Woodard to learn more about her decision to cut out alcohol from her life. We talked about SO much, including Hope's views on the gray areas of sobriety, the ways in which meme culture has normalized binge drinking, dating while sober, how alcoholism leads to disconnection with oneself and one's friends, and so much more. A huge theme of this podcast episode can be summarized by a quote I recently heard from Dr. Brené Brown: "The opposite of alcoholism isn't sobriety. The opposite of alcoholism is connection." I left my conversation with Hope feeling a huge sense of serenity, relief, and, one might say, solace. You can keep up with Hope's life by following her on TikTok and Instagram @justhopinalong :)

Sobering Thoughts
Sobering Thoughts
New Year, New Beginnings? In this solo episode, I discuss a recent life choice that I have decided to make after months, even years, of reflection. To be completely honest, this may have been one of the most difficult recordings that I have ever released. However, I truly hope that sharing my thoughts with the world not only holds me accountable for my actions but also resonates with anyone who is going through a situation similar to my own.
2023 is going to be a year of implementing new habits, incorporating lifestyle changes, and learnings from incredible people who have accomplished something I have just begun to dip my toes in: sobriety.

The Life Update That No One Asked For
The Life Update That No One Asked For
...But maybe you'll listen? In this 22-minute episode I talk about my return to Austin, my new life as a graduate student, my intense field work placement, my part-time job, and many meltdowns I've had in the past two months. I hope to shed some insight into how I'm navigating a difficult time in my life and share that recovery from anything isn't linear. At the end of the episode, I ask for feedback on what I should be sharing on Solace and the City while I'm unable to have weekly podcast episodes. Anyways, I hope those who listen enjoy!

NATALIE MCMILLAN - The Baddest Bitches Do The Most Good
NATALIE MCMILLAN - The Baddest Bitches Do The Most Good
This week I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing eclectic jewelry designer and lifetime creative, Natalie McMillan! Natalie is the founder and sole creative behind her namesake lifestyle brand Natalie McMillan. Using her affinity for artistry, Natalie works across a number of mediums focusing on unique and slightly off-beat pieces. In this episode, Natalie walks me through her creative career which began in 2016 by handcrafting jewelry pieces in her hot, crowded garage in the Bay Area. She quickly built a deep connection with her customer base which encouraged her to expand her brand to include art, apparel, and fragrances.
Natalie creates as she lives- with an outpouring of fun, love, and kindness. Her passion for inclusivity emanates throughout her brand by manufacturing her products exclusively with women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and people of color. Natalie loves challenging the status quo in all aspects of life.
Towards the latter part of this episode, Natalie talks about her mental health journey and explains how battling Type 1 Diabetes has impacted her childhood and young adult life.
Natalie and her lifestyle brand have been featured in top publications such as Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Vanity Fair Hollywood, and Vogue where one beauty editor dubbed Natalie’s Blood Sugar Baby scent as their favorite perfume (and it’s been selling out ever since)! Puma Swim used Natalie’s jewelry line exclusively in their 2021 campaign.

KEAUNO (KEKE) PEREZ - Twentysomethings and the City
KEAUNO (KEKE) PEREZ - Twentysomethings and the City
This week I had the absolute pleasure of inviting my friend Keauno (also known as Keke) Perez to be on Solace and the City! You may know Keke from his appearance on the Netflix reality show called Twentysomethings in Austin that premiered in December of last year. I've gotten to know Keke personally by virtue of living in this fantastic city, so I was so excited when he agreed to share his story on the podcast! In this episode, I ask Keauno to talk about what led him to apply to be on a reality television show and how the experience lived up (or surpassed) his expectations. Keke goes on to talk about how transformative this past year was for him and what it was like to publicly come out on national television. In just six months, Keke has continued to blossom into a stronger and more confident version of himself, while continuing to be one of the kindest and most lovable humans I have ever met in my life. Be sure to follow Keke on Instagram at @keaunoperez !

DR. JULIA STEINBERG - Mental Health in a Post-Roe America
DR. JULIA STEINBERG - Mental Health in a Post-Roe America
This week I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Julia Steinberg, an Associate Professor of Family Science at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, to unpack the effect of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade on women's mental health. Julia Steinberg received a PhD in social psychology in 2008 from Arizona State University and completed the Charlotte-Ellertson postdoctoral fellow in reproductive health from 2008 to 2011 in the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Steinberg then was a faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at UCSF from 2011 to 2014. In January 2015, she joined the Department of Family Science. Steinberg's research is largely at the interplay of mental health and reproductive events or experiences.
One line of research, which we talk about in depth, examines whether abortion causes or increases the risk of mental health problems. Another line of research we discuss looks at the role of mental health in unintended pregnancy. Also, make sure to check out Aid Access, an organization that supports women, girls, trans men, nonbinary and all people with an unwanted pregnancy to access an abortion or miscarriage treatment -- https://aidaccess.org/en/

PARKER FOSTER - Progress Starts with Conversation
PARKER FOSTER - Progress Starts with Conversation
This week I had the incredibly opportunity of speaking with Parker Foster, NY-based filmmaker and founder of the mental health organization Be Here Now. Growing up learning how to film in the skate world, Parker quickly found the value of bringing an authentic and raw feeling to his work. In this episode, Parker and I talk about how he came to love and find solace in filmmaking and what led him to create a non-profit that highlights stories of those struggling with their mental health. Much like me, the inspiration behind Parker's project stems from his own life. He is someone who conceptualizes his projects from sensitive parts of his life. I had such an incredible time speaking with Parker, and I encourage everyone to check out @beherenoworg or learn more about Parker at his website www.parkerfoster.com.

GIGI ROBINSON - Sports (Chronically) Ill-ustrated
This week I had the honor of speaking with Gigi Robinson, a digital artist, health & wellness advocate, current M.S. Candidate at the University of Southern California, and the first Sports Illustrated Model who openly battles a chronic illness. In this episode, I speak with Gigi about the work ethic, ambition, and tenacity that helped her transition her photography skills into those that create an impact through storytelling. Part of Gigi's story includes a chronic illness that she was diagnosed with at age 11. Gigi suffers with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos, which causes her to have extreme pain and extreme fatigue. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of hereditary disorders that affect the body's connective tissues, like skin, joints, and blood-vessel walls. EDS can cause chronic pain, injury susceptibility, and slow healing, among other symptoms.
Despite all of the physical and psychological challenges that threatened the path to becoming who she is today, Gigi has challenged adversity and dedicated a majority of her life to become a master content creator, always keeping her values of creating positive and impactful messages to my diverse audience as a priority. MADDY PRICE - Runner's Highs and Lows
MADDY PRICE - Runner's Highs and Lows
Maddy Price was born to two Canadian parents which allowed her to compete for the Canadian Team in Track and Field. Maddy is a 400 meter sprinter and 4x400 relay specialist who graduated from Duke University in 2018 and completed a Masters of Management Studies in 2019 while supporting the track and field team through volunteer coaching up until June 2021.
Maddy just barely missed the 2016 Canadian Olympic Team, the last race her dad ever saw, but then set her sights on Tokyo. Her road to Tokyo was filled with uncertainty, as she dealt with the passing of her dad from cancer, coming back from foot surgery a year before the Games, and navigating the global pandemic. Despite the odds, she made the Canadian 4x400 Olympic team and went on to run her fastest time ever in the finals with their team placing 4th. Far more important than the accomplishment of becoming an Olympian, is how she approached the process. With her family, and especially her dad, as inspiration, Maddy has always prioritized her relationships, staying present, and giving her best to everything she does. Maddy is an advocate and a mentor for the next generation of young female athletes through Voice In Sport, an advocacy platform providing resources and mentorship for girls in sport and through her work in 2020 with CAN Fund #150Women, a non-profit dedicated to helping Canadian female athletes be the best in the world.
In this episode with Maddy, we talk about her running career from childhood, to Duke, to a professional and now as an Olympian. We cover her emotional responses to the many steps in that process, and the mental habits that have allowed her to be successful. She is a ray of sunshine, and has so many nuggets about how to mentally approach sport and life. You can follow Maddy at @maddypriceless on Instagram and TikTok, and check out the video of Maddy’s journey to Tokyo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3xtzpqhdpg

JOANNE IRIZARRY - Do It Scared
JOANNE IRIZARRY - Do It Scared
We are BACK! After a brief hiatus, I am so excited to share the recording of our first live podcast with Joanne Irizarry of A Safe Place Inside Your Head. If you have been following Solace and the City since its inception, you may remember when I first met and recorded with Joanne during March of 2021. This past week, I had the privilege of speaking with Joanne again at Soho House Austin for an event honoring Mental Health Awareness Month. In this episode, Joanne reviews the mission of her mental health non-profit and updates me on all of the exciting things that she has been doing over this past year (including an exciting new app that will be launching soon!)
Joanne is such a special person, so I encourage everyone to listen to this episode and our previous conversation from last year. Make sure to follow @asafeplaceinsideyourhead to support the amazing work that she and Tanner are doing in the mental health community!
CW: This episode contains discussions about suicide and mental illness. I encourage everyone to listen, but be sure to pause the recording and take breaks if need be. Give yourself the grace you need and tune back in when you are ready.

EMILY AND LINDSAY STETZER - OCD and Me
EMILY AND LINDSAY STETZER - OCD and Me
First things first, I wanted to apologize for my two-week hiatus from posting episodes for Solace and the City. I discuss the reasons for my absence in the intro, but ultimately I can only attribute this to the difficulties of balancing a full-time job with a self-run podcast! Nevertheless, I am back with an incredible episode featuring the co-founders of Presently, Emily and Lindsay Stetzer. In this episode, I speak with Emily and Lindsay about their history dealing with OCD and how the obsessions and compulsions that they each battle differ. As someone who also suffers with OCD, I am able to share my personal experience and how it impacted my childhood and young adult life. Emily and Lindsay certainly turned lemons into lemonade by creating a jewelry company that pulls from lessons they learned from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. You can check out their beautiful creations on https://www.thinkpresently.com/ and follow them on Instagram @thinkpresently. Finally, I mention a YouTube video towards the end of the episode that had a major impact on my own personal growth. ALEXIS HAINES - A Little Bit Alexis
ALEXIS HAINES - A Little Bit Alexis
This week I am so excited to share my conversation with Alexis Haines. Born Alexis Neiers, this former wild child grew up in the public eye and was involved in the scandal known as "The Bling Ring." Alexis got sober at nineteen years old after facing up to six years in the correctional system due to a burglary conviction. As the star of the E! Reality series Pretty Wild, Alexis became a media sensation after her public meltdown became a viral meme. Her firsthand experience with substance abuse combined with the explosive effects of social media storytelling turned her rock bottom into a reinvention tour; igniting a movement to eradicate shame around the stories that inevitably save us - if we are brave enough to share them with others. Now a mother, doula, wife, writer, and mental health advocate, Alexis knows that whatever your struggle looks like, you are worth the journey back to wholeness. You can learn more about Alexis and her journey by following @itsalexishaines and check out her podcast "Recovering from Reality" wherever you listen to your podcasts!

TALIA LICHTSTEIN - What If I Can't Love Myself?
TALIA LICHTSTEIN - What If I Can't Love Myself?
I am fangirling this week! I had the opportunity to virtually sit down with content creator and host of the new podcast called Bad Vibes, Talia Lichtstein! You probably have seen some of Talia's videos on TikTok, where she lists things that she doesn't like or stuff that annoys her. I have found myself gravitating towards Talia's videos due to the relatability of her content and her unapologetic hot takes on life. After being inspired by an episode of Euphoria, I knew she would be the perfect person to unpack a topic that I've long been meaning to discuss on Solace and the City: toxic positivity. In this episode, Talia and I break down the concept of self-love, specifically in how it can be used on social media to gaslight self-conscious consumers of content. In other words, Talia and I believe that if you are going through something difficult or you don't feel 100% confident about yourself, that is TOTALLY normal! Be sure to give Talia a follow @talialichtstein and make sure to check out her brand new podcast with Betches Media called Bad Vibes!

TORI PENTA - Wellness: Mindset or Merchandise?
This week I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Tori Penta, a friend, colleague, and overall badass human being. Tori is a certified life coach and works with her clients to cultivate the best practices to maintain physical and mental wellness. I brought Tori on to help me unpack a topic that's been on my mind for a while. Wellness has grown from budding personal health concept to a $4.2 trillion global industry. My question for Tori is: how can we discern fact from fiction? At what point does the concept of wellness lose its authenticity? If you're interested in learning more about recent wellness trends that can actually HELP you with your daily routine, definitely tune into this episode because Tori has a ton of tips! SARAH MERRILL HALL - Big Kid Solutions
SARAH MERRILL HALL - Big Kid Solutions
This week I had the incredible honor of speaking with Sarah Merrill Hall, the creator of the popular brand and podcast, Big Kid Problems! For those who don't know, @Bigkidproblems started as an anonymous Twitter account from the basement of Sarah's sorority house during her senior year of college. Applying for jobs and realizing that she was less-than-prepared for adult life, Big Kid Problems became an outlet and one of Sarah's favorite hobbies. Eight years and over 500k followers later, Big Kid Problems has been with Sarah through every step of her 20-something life. Much like myself, Sarah has endured bad roommates, tiny paychecks, horrible bosses, and sucky first dates. And much like Solace and the City, Big Kid Problems has taught Sarah that we are all together in the struggle of navigating adulthood. Make sure to check out The Big Kid Problems Podcast and Bottle Service, to learn more about Sarah and her journey as a soon-to-be mom!

SATC and TMM - Unpacking 2021
Happy New Year, Solace and the City Family! This week we have a very special crossover episode with Schuyler DeBree and Kat Zempolich of The Mental Matchup! Together we took some time to reflect on this past year and some things that we learned from the various guests we brought on to our respective podcasts. We discuss the common threads between our missions, the topics that kept popping up, our thoughts on the mental health stigma and how everyone copes differently, some of our favorite episodes and guests, and our intentions for the new year. This episode does not merely showcase a reflection on our podcasts, but it also highlights the ways in which we all have changed as individuals over the past year, and how we plan to move forward in podcasting and in life. Make sure to follow @morgansmessage and @thementalmatchup on Instagram and listen to The Mental Matchup wherever you get your podcasts!

JACQUELINE TRUMBULL - Will You Accept This Trauma?
JACQUELINE TRUMBULL - Will You Accept This Trauma?
This week I had ANOTHER absolutely incredible conversation with Jacqueline Trumbull! Jacqueline is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology at Duke University and was able to share her insight into some very important mental health topics. Being that Jacqueline is both a psychology student and a Bachelor alum, she is able to speak to the ways in which the franchise commercializes vulnerability in a way that's unhealthy for all parties involved. We discuss the differences between authentic vulnerability and oversharing and how these two forms of communication impact our platonic and romantic relationships. Jacqueline also has a mental health podcast called A Little Help For Our Friends, where she offers advice on how to speak to and care for loved ones with mental illness. NIGEL ROXBURY - These Streets Will Make You Feel Brand New
NIGEL ROXBURY - These Streets Will Make You Feel Brand New
These past few weeks I have been home for the holidays, which means I have been spending a lot of my time in New York City. As some of you know, I started this podcast in many ways to help me find my place in the concrete jungle after a pretty lonely year of my life. Solace and the City was instrumental in bringing me out of my shell and helping me re-fall in love with New York. I truly never thought I would leave. Unfortunately, living in the city during the first year of a global pandemic brought back the feeling of all-consuming loneliness, and not even my podcast could make that go away. When I moved to Austin, I still had a feeling of anger and resentment towards a place that was once my favorite city in the world. However, these past few weeks have shed light on how much I truly missed New York and why I fell in love with the city in the first place. It's safe to say that being in NYC has truly allowed me to be home for the holidays.
This week I was so lucky to sit down with content creator and New York City enthusiast, Chris Murch (a.k.a. Nigel Roxbury.) Despite originally moving from Austin (Hook 'Em!), Chris has always been fascinated by the story behind the most interesting and historical city in the country. He thus started making Tik Tok content to share his knowledge about NYC, which has quickly made him one of the top New York Specific creators on the platform. His passion and love for the city is infectious, and I feel truly honored to have had the opportunity to learn from him. To keep up with Chris, you can follow him on Instagram or Tik Tok @nigelroxbury -- and be sure to check out his music as well!

ILANA DUNN - Dating Sucks (But It Doesn't Have To!)
ILANA DUNN - Dating Sucks (But It Doesn't Have To!)
I am TOTALLY fangirling, because this past weekend I got to sit down and record with the host of one of my favorite dating podcasts, Ilana Dunn! Ilana is such a badass -- she went from a successful career in the music industry to working directly with Nick Jonas, and then ultimately she landed a job which essentially made her the face of Hinge. (Anyone heard of it?) Working for a dating app helped Ilana realize how much of an impact she could have by helping the hopelessly romantic navigate the murky, tumultuous waters of dating in NYC. She opened up about her personal breakups and heartbreaks to help show people that they were not alone in their romantic struggles. Now, Ilana channels her compassion for helping people into her awesome podcast, Seeing Other People! You can check our Ilana on Instagram @ilana.dunn and listen to Seeing Other People wherever you find your podcasts!

INDIA OXENBERG - Nightmare at NXIVM
INDIA OXENBERG - Nightmare at NXIVM
This week, I had the privilege of speaking with India Oxenberg, activist, author, film producer, and former member of the NXIVM cult. At age 19, India and her mother attended a session of lectures that were part of the "Executive Success Program." Much like Sarah Edmondson, a former guest of Solace and the City, India had no idea that this program would change the course of her life forever. During our conversation, India discussed the horrific manipulation tactics orchestrated by Keith Raniere and Allison Mack, which ultimately caused her to lose sight of reality and remain faithful to the NXIVM cult. When she came across flash drives containing audio of Raniere masterminding DOS’s darkest details, India was finally able to see the light. In October of 2020, India released a four-part Starz docuseries called Seduced that she executive produced. The documentary gives audiences a more three-dimensional portrait of her, negating the media headlines that dismissed her as “a cult girl” or a “sex slave.” India also wrote a book about her experiences that she titled Still Learning, which is available on Audible.
I had such an incredible time speaking to India, and I encourage you all to watch Seduced, listen to Still Learning, and follow India on Instagram.

MITCHELL DAVIS - Keep Austin Wired
MITCHELL DAVIS - Keep Austin Wired
This week I had the opportunity to record with a local Austin musician, Mitchell Davis! I actually first met Mitchell when I was walking on the pedestrian bridge in downtown Austin. My friend Cole was about to propose to his girlfriend, so I asked Mitchell if he would be willing to play a song for them when he got down on one knee, and he agreed without hesitation! After such an incredible encounter, I obviously had to invite him to come on the podcast! In this episode, Mitchell and I talk about what motivated him to become a musician and how he has acclimated to the Austin scene. Make sure to listen to the end of the episode to hear Mitchell's incredible voice! To learn more about Mitchell, you can check him out on Instagram at @mitchelldavismusic.

JON BIRGER - All The Single Ladies, Put Your Hands Up And Listen To This Episode!
JON BIRGER - All The Single Ladies, Put Your Hands Up And Listen To This Episode!
This week I feel incredibly privileged to share my conversation with bestselling author and financial editor of NBC's Today Show, Jon Birger! Anyone who knows me personally can tell you that I am an avid listener of dating podcasts such as We Met At Acme. However, I have always found the guidance to "ignore the guy in order to get the guy" to be quite perplexing and, from my own experience, fruitless. So when I heard about Jon's recent book Make Your Move, I was so excited to hear a new perspective on dating in the 21st Century. After devouring his novel in less than two days, I found solace in the fact that heterosexual single women like myself were not doomed to live a life alone nor subject to waiting around for a partner. I thus reached out to see if Jon would speak on Solace and the City to inspire other single listeners on how they can take the reigns when navigating the dating world. I am SO excited to share our conversation and encourage you all to check out Jon's book(s) by visiting jonbirger.com!!
Here's a little bit more about Jon's new book, Make Your Move, for anyone interested in buying a copy: "Apps have transformed dating from a mysterious adventure into a daily chore. Young, single, college-educated women are sick and tired of competing for a shrinking supply of guys. And marriage-material men, long expected to take the lead when it comes to asking women out, are suddenly balking at making the first move, fearing they’ll come across as creepy or inappropriate.
Society is changing, which means it’s time for dating to evolve. Millennial and Gen Z women are more than capable of seeking out what—and who—they want. They’re standouts in the classroom and champions on the playing fields. They’re leaders in the workplace and trailblazers in city halls, state houses, and Congress. So why would we tell a generation of badass women that they’re not allowed to be bold when it comes to finding love? Why should they have to sit back and wait (and wait and wait) for men to find them?"

SARAH EDMONDSON - Unbounded
SARAH EDMONDSON - Unbounded
This week I had the privilege of speaking to Sarah Edmondson, defector of the NXIVM cult and author of "Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped the Cult that Bound My Life." In 2005, when NXIVM, a personal and professional development company, promised to provide the tools and insight Sarah needed to reach her potential, she was intrigued. Over her twelve-year tenure, she went from student to coach and eventually operated her own NXIVM center in Vancouver. Questions kept coming up about the organization’s rules and practices, which came to a head in 2017 when she accepted an invitation from her best friend to join DOS, a “secret sisterhood” within NXIVM.
Sarah’s full story as a whistleblower is featured in the CBC podcast “Uncover: Escaping NXIVM” (downloaded over 25 million times) and “The Vow”, the critically acclaimed HBO documentary series on NXIVM. In 2019, Sarah published Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, the Cult that Bound My Life, with Kristine Gasbarre. In this tell-all memoir, she shares her story from the moment she takes her first seminar to her harrowing fight to get out of NXIVM, collaborate with the FBI, help others, and heal.
Sarah is keeping the conversation via her own podcast, "A Little Bit Culty," by exploring the fads, beliefs, and trends that blur the line between devotion and dysfunction. Co-hosted by her husband and fellow NXIVM whistleblower Nippy, the podcast is part conversational coffee date and part deep dive on everything from Waco to lululemon. And while there was nothing small about Sarah’s cult experience, “A Little Bit Culty” is grounded in her mission to help people understand, heal from, and avoid abusive situations, one little red flag at a time.

Tefi had to overcome a number of mental health struggles before launching her career at In Style Magazine and creating viral videos about pop culture. In this episode, we talk about her battle with an eating disorder, toxic work environments, navigating vulnerability in a new relationship, and the highs and lows of the COVID-19 pandemic. MATTHEW BOCCHI - The Rising
MATTHEW BOCCHI - The Rising
This week I had the incredible privilege to speak with best-selling author and a speaker on survival, loss, and recovery, Matthew Bocchi. After his father died on 9/11 in the World Trade Center, Matt began an obsessive quest to find out exactly how he died. In the first memoir told by a child of 9/11, Matt intimately delves into the psychological and emotional torment that ensued after his father’s death. With heartbreaking vulnerability, he details how his incessant quest resulted in a devastating act of violence that stripped his innocence as a young man. As Matt spirals down a bottomless pit of drug abuse, he willfully risks his life in search of the next high—all in an attempt to forget his past. Now at twenty-eight years old and sober, he recounts his unique story—one full of heartbreak and despair, grief and uncertainty, but most importantly, happiness and hope. The lesson he teaches us is clear but intricate: No matter how far you fall, you can always rise again. No matter how far you stray, you can always find your way home. And no matter how wide you sway, you can always pick up the pieces and stand tall. You can find Sway on Amazon or at Barnes and Noble, and I highly encourage you all to check it out!

Solo Episode - Why I'm Nervous About Returning to Greece
Solo Episode - Why I'm Nervous About Returning to Greece
Hi everyone! I decided to post a solo episode this week and, to be honest, I'm a little nervous about it going live. With a family trip to Greece on the horizon, I’ve had a lot on my mind and been quite nervous about returning to a place with so many memories. To some of you this may seem strange, and I recognize the privilege in having anxiety about traveling to one of the most beautiful countries on this planet. However, as I've touched on in a few of my previous episodes, my most recent trip to Greece marked the depths of my mental health crisis. In an effort to help process some of the grief I still hold onto, I decided to share some of the reasons I am nervous about returning to a country that once brought me so much joy. So here's my story.
CW: I disclose many intricate details of my eating disorder in this episode, so feel free to pause or stop the podcast if this content is triggering to you. If you are currently struggling with an eating disorder or any other anxiety-based illness, please don't hesitate to get help from one of the following resources:

Throughout our conversation, Siobhan explains how she was able to fall in love with herself after battling a mental health crisis and a breakup with a serious boyfriend. With the help of her friends, her poetry, and her wonderful dog Roux, Siobhan is able to tackle whatever hurdles come her way head on and tap back into the confidence that is one of the MANY things that makes her such a beautiful person.

DR. ROY RICHARD GRINKER - Nobody's Normal
DR. ROY RICHARD GRINKER - Nobody's Normal
For the second week of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am SO excited to be sharing an incredibly memorable and personal conversation with Dr. Roy Richard Grinker. Dr. Grinker is an American author and Professor of Anthropology, International Affairs, and Human Sciences at the George Washington University. His first book on autism, Unstrange Minds, was in part an "attempt to make sense of an intensely personal issue: his own daughter's autism. Although we discuss so much in the 45 minutes of this episode, we spend the majority unpacking his most recent work, Nobody's Normal. In Nobody’s Normal, Dr. Grinker chronicles the progress and setbacks in the struggle against mental-illness stigma―from the eighteenth century, through America’s major wars, and into today’s high-tech economy.
Nobody’s Normal argues that stigma is a social process that can be explained through cultural history, a process that began the moment we defined mental illness, that we learn from within our communities, and that we ultimately have the power to change. Though the legacies of shame and secrecy are still with us today, Dr. Grinker believes that we are at the cusp of ending the marginalization of the mentally ill.
At the end of the episode, I share a poem written by my autistic younger cousin when he was in eighth grade. His vulnerability and eloquence highlight his beautiful mind and soul, and I could not be more proud to call him my family. This episode is dedicated to my cousin and my family, and I truly hope that everyone can take a listen.
P.S. You can check out Dr. Grinker's TED Talk by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYVpTYKevxQ

RACHEL BERNSTEIN - That One Time I Was Recruited Into a Sex Cult...
For the first episode of Mental Health Awareness Month, I've decided to share an episode that is not only SO interesting but also sheds lights on a little known fact about myself -- I was once recruited into the NXIVM sex cult. For those who don't know, NXIVM was an American cult that engaged in sex trafficking, forced labor, and racketeering while claiming to be a "Self-Help Group." This week, I sat down with Ifellow podcast host, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and cult specialist, Rachel Bernstein. Together we explore the mentality and psychology of cult membership, and Rachel explains how and why people are drawn into cults, what keeps them there, and the aftermath that can occur if they leave. Rachel was recently featured in the STARZ Documentary Seduced: Inside The NXIVM Cult, and touches on her experience with that, too!

We discuss what consent means in yoga (and general fitness) classes and how the COVID-19 pandemic has flipped the term "personal space" upside down. JARRETT ROSE - Kurt Cobain, Donald Trump, and Shrooms
JARRETT ROSE - Kurt Cobain, Donald Trump, and Shrooms
The title says it all. My conversation with Jarrett for this week's episode was absolutely incredible, and we touched on almost every topic imaginable in the worlds of sociology and mental health. Jarrett is a PhD. Candidate at York University in Toronto studying sociology. His research specifically focuses on the ways in which psychedelics can alleviate mental distress. (Yes, we are having another episode about research on psilocybin mushrooms!) However, before launching into this specific area of research, Jarrett focused more on the social determinants of health and wellness. After graduating from his Master's Program in San Diego, he even spent time working in a Trauma Reduction ward at a Juvenile Detention facility. I am so honored to have had the chance to speak with Jarrett about his incredible life, and I have no doubt that everyone who tunes in will feel 10x smarter after listening!

JOANN IRIZARRY - A Safe Place Inside Your Head
This week I am incredibly honored to share my conversation with Joann Irizarry, co-founder of @asafeplaceinsideyourhead. A Safe Place Inside Your Head was founded by Joann and her son Tannerin 2018, who wanted to share messages with others who struggle with mental health issues on a daily basis. This idea was started in remembrance of a family member who's life was lost by suicide during a time where mental health was often misunderstood. Their mission is to help, grow and inspire others that it's OK to not be OK and by sharing an inside community of like minded people who want to be the best versions of themselves. The organization rises by lifting others up by sharing small content curators work and resources to help others. TEMO KESHELASHVILI - Social Chaos
TEMO KESHELASHVILI - Social Chaos
If you liked The Social Dilemma on Netflix then you are going to LOVE this episode with Temo, a Psychologist and Post-Academic Psychoanalytic Candidate focused on Psychological Anthropology. Our conversation revolves around the modern state of culture using technology and the malignant effect of social media on our mental health. Despite his clientele varying in age, Temo found that so many of them showed signs of addiction to their devices. This prompted his interest in the concept of a Technocracy — when the technology is the central tool for of the government and society.

PAUL SELI - Psychedelics and Lucid Dreams
PAUL SELI - Psychedelics and Lucid Dreams
This week I sat down with Dr. Paul Seli to discuss the potential for psychedelics to help treat mental health problems, a really popular research topic at major universities. Paul is a professor of a cognitive psychology professor at Duke University and is on on The Board of Directors for Psychedelic Studies at the University of Toronto. Paul discusses his own experiences with psychedelics, specifically psilocybin mushrooms, and breaks down what the research says about their potential for mental health treatment, as well as implications for creativity and humility. Finally, Paul teaches me how to induce a lucid dream and explains how some of the most famous inventions in history were created through REM sleep!
To be clear, while Solace and the City is extremely about this research, we believe psychedelics are best used in a treatment setting and should be approached with extreme caution. Solace and the City does not advocate recreational use of psilocybin mushrooms or any other hallucinogenic substances. NANCY RUTH DEEN - You Should Go And Love Yourself
NANCY RUTH DEEN - You Should Go And Love Yourself
This week I am so excited to share my conversation with Nancy Ruth Dean! Nancy has been in the relationship industry for 6 years, and got her start working as a professional matchmaker. It was there that she learned the personal stories of people trying to find love. What she learned was that most of the people she met hadn’t fully gotten over their ex. Meanwhile, she was going through her own breakup and trying to figure out what the secret sauce was to getting over it. Through the same guidance she gives her clients today, she ended up meeting her fiancé in that process and was called to start a coaching practice that would help her clients fully embrace this new chapter and embrace the opportunity of a lifetime to get to know themselves in the deepest way possible.
In this episode, Nancy and I discuss the ups and downs of navigating a breakup, specifically in the midst of a global pandemic that has caused so many to fear being alone. We flip the narrative and walk through all of the many reasons why this is the perfect time to work on your relationship with yourself! To learn more about Nancy, you can go to hellobreakup.com!

I am both nervous and excited to be sharing my conversation with Hilary Weinstein, an incredible friend and psychotherapist who has helped me persevere through a very rough patch in my life. As a psychotherapist, Hilary works to meet the needs of those suffering from all sorts of mental health difficulties. Because of her own history battling anxiety, depression, and a terrible eating disorder, Hilary is able to offer a unique sense of relatability. In this episode, Hilary and I unpack our histories battling mental illnesses and debate whether the pursuit of a profession in psychotherapy is a “selfish” endeavor. Thalia is the founder of We Met Through Thalia, a matchmaking agency based out of New York City. With nearly 10 years of experience as a matchmaker and dating coach she has helped individuals recover from heartbreak, become an effective dater, find love, and navigate the inevitable challenges that come with relationships. ISAAC HINDIN-MILLER - A Sobering Conversation
ISAAC HINDIN-MILLER - A Sobering Conversation
This week I virtually sat down with DJ, Fashion Industry Insider, and Founder of the clothing brand @ilikeyou, Isaac Hindin-Miller! I now am so excited to be sharing this incredible conversation, blessed not only with a New Zealand accent but also with vulnerability, authenticity and wisdom. Isaac moved to the United States in 2011 and quickly became involved in the New York City party scene. After a few years of what may have seemed like the coolest life from an outside perspective, Isaac came to realize that he needed to readdress his relationship with alcohol and drugs in order to take charge of his life. Today, Isaac is completely sober and, in this podcast episode, he works to dispel the stereotypes and clichés that the media continues to use when portraying alcoholism and drug addiction.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of people to reevaluate their relationships - relationships with significant others, relationships with friends, relationships with food, and relationships with alcohol. In the loneliest days of quarantine, even I found myself reaching for a glass of red wine as if it were the only way to pass time in this new dystopian reality. In this episode, Isaac challenges us to take a step back and consider whether or not we are using alcohol as a solution to a larger problem. I have no doubt that you all will not only enjoy our conversation but also take away some important points for your own reflection.
To keep up with Isaac, you can follow him on Instagram at @IsaacLikes_ and see his cool merch at @ilikeyou! (P.S. Keep an eye out for an exciting collaboration coming soon!)

OLIVIA CARIDI - Bachelor Production and Self Destruction
OLIVIA CARIDI - Bachelor Production and Self Destruction
I am SO excited to be sharing this episode with Bachelor Legend and Podcast Extraordinaire, Olivia Caridi! Olivia first came into the public eye when she was a contestant on Season 20 of The Bachelor, during which she immediately caught the eye of Ben Higgins. However, her connection with Ben fizzled out when the producers saw her confidence as a trait that could be molded into a character flaw. After being portrayed as the season's villain, Olivia's mental health plummeted and she suffered with depression for several years. However, being the strong, confident person that she is, Olivia was able to garner the resilience to start her own podcast in which she gives reality stars the platform to share their own stories, without any meddling from producers. Olivia is such an inspiration for aspiring podcasters like me and young women everywhere, I have absolutely no doubt that everyone will LOVE this episode. Plus, if you stay tuned until the end, you will here Olivia and I discuss our predictions for Matt James' season! You can follow Olivia on Instagram @oliviacaridi and listen to her podcast Mouthing Off with Olivia wherever you stream your podcasts!

MY GRANDMA - Another Christmas Carol
MY GRANDMA - Another Christmas Carol
This week I have a very special episode featuring the one and only Carol Rosen, also known as my Grandma! Last Christmas I sat her down to learn about the stigmas around mental health back when she was growing up that vastly affected the ways in which her generation assessed and treated psychological disorders. This year, I wanted to learn more about my Grandma's personal story. Although we couldn't be together for Christmas, she told me the romantic story of how her parents met and love letters that her father sent my great-grandmother during their brief but beautiful marriage. My Grandma was and still is an absolute babe, so I had to learn her secrets of how she navigated the dating world, which ultimately led her to finding my Grandpa! Finally, she shares some advice on love and life which you won't want to miss. If you want any of my Grandma's wisdom, you can send her an email at caroljrosen@gmail.com. Enjoy!

JACQUELINE TRUMBULL - Is He A Narcissist or Just a Frat Bro?
This week I had an absolutely incredible conversation with Jacqueline Trumbull, and former contestant on The Bachelor! Jacqueline is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology at Duke University and was able to share her insight into some very important mental health topics. Because her research focuses on Borderline Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Jacqueline is able to break down the nuances of these conditions and how exactly they manifest. She also explains the signs to look out for in someone who you think may have NPD. Jacqueline also has a mental health podcast called A Little Help For Our Friends, where she offers advice on how to speak to and care for loved ones with mental illness. As this is a topic that is quite close to my heart, we discuss the ways in which to support our friends while also maintaining our own boundaries. Finally, Jacqueline shares her experience on Ari's season of The Bachelor, specifically in regards to the psychological manipulation that can occur on reality TV.

Reasons for Living
Reasons for Living
This week I have a pretty unconventional episode for you all. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I first wanted to talk about a few of the things that I am so grateful for, specifically the amazing friendships I have that keep my spirits bright. I then move into sharing a story that has been my lyrical bible for the past five years. Brian Finkelstein (@bsfinkestein) is a writer who has been nominated for two Emmys. He is also a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and is a host/storyteller for The Moth. In this episode, I am sharing his story "Perfect Moments", which you can also read in the Moth’s first book: 50 trues Stories. This week I brought back on my incredible friend Liz Gunner to discuss how to approach conversations about depression, whether it be a conversation we are having with ourselves or a friend. We first speak to our own experiences navigating mental health difficulties and, we share how and when we finally came to recognize the benefits that anti-anxiety medication had to offer. After addressing and falsifying the stigmas surrounding psychiatric meds, we move into a discussion on how to support friends, family members, and loved ones who are struggling. Having been on both sides, Liz and I share what has worked for us and what hasn't. Stay tuned for the end because we have a special appearance from Enna Selmanovic!

OLIVIA LUBARSKY - Mental Gymnastics
OLIVIA LUBARSKY - Mental Gymnastics
This week I sat down with the absolutely INCREDIBLE Olivia Lubarsky, a former D1 gymnast at Towson University and mental health advocate! During her four years at Towson University, Olivia did everything she could to bring awareness to the mental and emotional issues that face athletes. As a gymnast, she was constantly striving to achieve a form of perfection that was impossible to obtain by the very nature of the sport. After addressing her depression and performance anxiety, Olivia founded the “Own Your Roar” initiative, an awareness campaign that brings light to mental health issues that affect student-athletes. I am so honored to be sharing the amazing conversation I had with Olivia, and cannot express how much admiration and appreciation I have for this girl. She's an absolute rockstar who you should follow on Instagram at @olivialubarsky!

In this week's episode, Harrison and I talk about the relationship between mental health and dating, both pre- and post-pandemic. Hot Girls Hot Takes: Why Do Guys Date Crazy Women?
Hot Girls Hot Takes: Why Do Guys Date Crazy Women?
Welcome to the new spinoff series from Solace and the City and The Real Dietitians of New York City called Hot Girls Hot Takes! Each week, Liz Gunner and I will focus on a topic related to mental health and/or body image. After sharing our own thoughts on the episode theme, we will then call in some male experts (a.k.a. our guy friends and Hinge matches) to get an opinion from the opposite sex. During this week's episode, Liz and I explore the male tendencies to gravitate towards toxic relationships in which their female partner is possessive or controlling. You will hear thoughts from our friends (and Hinge matches) as well as some lightly-heated debates. In addition to talking about the psychology behind these types of relationships, Liz and I also discuss the importance of confidence and self-love, both of which are qualities that our male guests find to be extremely sexy!
**PSA: I recognize that the implications of these questions can come off as heteronormative of imply that men’s preferences in a woman are “black & white." I also realize that cis-men are not the ones who are in need of any additional platforms to express their opinions. Going forward, I plan on getting the opinions of those who are gender non-binary as well as friends who have a sexual orientations that differ from my own. Unfortunately, as a cis-woman, the only Hinge matches who i can call on-demand are heterosexual cis-men!!!

GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY - The Garden State of Mind
GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY - The Garden State of Mind
On this week's BONUS episode, I sat down with Governor Phil Murphy to discuss how he sees the government's responsibility to address the mental health challenges that face both my home state of New Jersey and the country as a whole. Governor Murphy touches on why he decided to sign a budget earlier this week that would restore a New Jersey school mental health program, and towards the end of the episode, he touches on how the pandemic has affected him both as a prominent political leader and as a person.
I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to speak with Governor Murphy and share our conversation with you all. His leadership during these unprecedented times has made me proud to be from New Jersey, and his willingness to allocate 15 minutes for my podcast speaks volumes about how much he cares about mental health.

SAMANTHA TIRONE - Moving With Grief
I have a very special episode to share this week. I had a virtual recording with Samantha Tirone, who is an amazing woman with a powerful story. This life-shattering event caused Samantha to reevaluate what was truly important in her life and begin to be an advocate for those suffering from addiction. Despite how painful it is to share, Samantha tells her story as an effort to normalize these types of difficult conversations and reassure those suffering that they are not alone. MIKE JOHNSON - Mike Drop
MIKE JOHNSON - Mike Drop
Happy Labor Day from me and the one and only Mike Johnson!!! I have SUCH an exciting episode to share with you all. I (virtually) sat down with the fan favorite from Hannah Brown's season of the Bachelorette and had the most amazing conversation. We talked about his experience on the show and thereafter. After long talks with executives of the franchise, Mike was unfortunately not picked as the season's male lead. In this episode he opens up about how that decision made him feel as well as his thoughts on the show's overall lack of diversity. Finally, Mike tells me about his incredible new book coming out, Making The Love You Want. You can follow Mike on Instagram (if you don't already) at @mike_johnson and buy his book on October 2, 2020!

COLIN BEDELL - Zoediac Signs
COLIN BEDELL - Zoediac Signs
It's Virgo season so you know what that means! I finally was able to speak with an astrologer to learn more about my own chart and, let me tell you, it was worth the wait. I was lucky enough to speak with none other than Colin Bedell, the co-founder of Queer Cosmos who was featured in my favorite New Yorker article about, you guessed it, astrology! Colin and I talk about the fascinating statistics which show how interest in astrology escalates in times of uncertainty. He also helps me discover that my co-star has been lying to me, because I apparently do not know what year I was born in! Even if you are not as astrology-obsessed as I am, I know you will find this episode with Colin so interesting. You can also follow Colin on Instagram at @QueerCosmos for more information on the Zodiac signs!

In this episode we talk about the ways in which our anxiety helped manifest disordered eating, and Catie opens up about her time in rehab which has led her to sobriety. Catie is such an inspiration to anyone battling some type of addiction or another, and I feel honored to share her story on my platform. You can follow her on Instagram at @kto969.

ANGELICA TORRES - All Black Lives Matter
ANGELICA TORRES - All Black Lives Matter
I am humbled to be sharing my conversation with actress, model, and transgender activist, Angelica Torres. Angelica stars in Season Two of Pose (an absolutely amazing show), but I first heard her speak on a panel hosted by The Grapevine. I was so inspired by her kindness and eloquence that I took a chance and asked if she would speak on the Solace and the City. Safe to say I was through the moon when she agreed to share her story with my listeners! Angelica and I spoke about the abuse she experienced during her childhood and the moment she experienced gender euphoria. She then sheds light on how the misrepresentation of trans people in media has perpetrated a misogynistic and transphobic society. This is one of many reasons that there hasn't been a week in 2020 where a trans person has NOT been murdered. Angelica is so amazing, and I want to be sure to share numerous ways you can support her and causes she cares about.

CAROLINE MOLEY - Just Another Manic Monday
CAROLINE MOLEY - Just Another Manic Monday
Kanye West. Mariah Carey. Demi Lovato. Robin Williams. Russell Brand. Frank Sinatra. -- What do all of these incredibly talented celebrities have in common? They all have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. With the recent news of Kanye West's tweets, I wanted to sit down with my friend Caroline Moley to learn more about this extremely stigmatized mental illness that is so prevalent in our society and pop culture. Caroline goes into detail about what manic and depressive episodes look and feel like for her and sheds light on other nuances of the condition. We spend quite some time thinking about the extent to which our personalities are defined by our mental illnesses. Is being manic depressive in fact a double-edged sword? Finally, we discuss how humor can be used as a coping mechanism for internal battles.
My conversation with Caroline was truly enlightening, and I think everyone will take something from this episode. You can also follow Caroline on Instagram at @treaturselfcaroline, and check out her meme page at @triggerwarningqueenmemes!

I had the opportunity to speak with my beautiful friend Brookie McIlvaine about the work she is doing for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Project 2025. The goal of this initiative is to reduce the suicide rate by 20% by the year 2025. We talk about some crazy stats that underlie the suicide epidemic pervading our country and then touch on the ways in which the AFSP plans on saving the most lives in the shortest amount of time. I’m also thrilled to be coupling this episode with the launch of a collaboration with Beach Beads by Em! All profits made from these bracelets will be going to Brookie’s fund for Project 2025!

This week I am SO excited to share my episode with Connor Saeli from Season 15 of The Bachelorette! DR. DARYL APPLETON - The Importance of Therapy
This week I sat down with Dr. Daryl Appleton, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Fortune 500 Executive Coach! I have been wanting to bring on a professional therapist as a guest for so long, and I truly feel that I hit the jackpot when I got connected with Dr. Appleton. We talked about how her interest in crime shows spiked her interest in mental health and eventually led her to starting a private practice where she offers counseling to a variety of clients, from twenty-somethings to CEOs! JORDAN BONNER - Using Your Privilege to Empower
JORDAN BONNER - Using Your Privilege to Empower
I have been thinking a lot about how to use my platform to support the Black Lives Matter movement without taking up media real estate that could be put towards more effective educational resources. I think that I speak for many of my fellow white allies in that I really want to be having conversations to get a better understanding of the black perspective, but I also acknowledge that this relearning process is a privilege. I thus feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to catch up with my friend Jordan Bonner to have a conversation about race reconciliation. I hope you all take something away from this episode, and I really would love to hear any thoughts or feedback. Lastly, I encourage my white friends to continue amplifying black voices in any way that you can. Much love, Zoe :)

Happy Memorial Day everyone! Today I am SO excited to share my conversation with Lindsey Boylan, a Democrat running against Jerrold Nadler for Congress in NY's 10th District. In that role, she oversaw The Office of Storm Recovery where she led disaster relief efforts for NewYork in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. She was also responsible for the housing portfolio where she secured hundreds of millions of dollars for public housing. Lindsey has a series of plans to help New York, and the nation, through this public health crisis and deal with the aftermath. She also is a HUGE mental health advocate! In this episode, Lindsey shares why mental health is such a large part of her platform and why it is so personal to her. Ultimately, mental health has no party and it doesn't discriminate on race, gender, sexual orientation, country of origin, etc. For this reason, I think that anyone will benefit from listening to my conversation with Lindsey. DYLAN HAINES - Clear Eyes and Full Hearts
I’m so excited to be sharing my first bonus episode of the month with Dylan Haines!! Dylan lives and breathes Texas, so in the first part of the episode we talked a lot about what it was like for him growing up in Austin and making his way to the UT football team. When I try to get Dylan to open up about his mental heath, we begin to butt heads a bit, as he doesnt immediately see the power of vulnerability. However, this conversation taught me a lot and reaffirmed my belief that mental health still has a stigma and needs to be normalized! You can follow Dylan on Instagram, and definitely check him out on Tik Tok to see his side hustle!

CELESTE O'CONNOR - Not Peaking in High School
This week I'm sharing my conversation with Celeste O'Connor, a Hopkins friend and incredibly talented young actor! With the release of her first major film Selah and the Spades on our minds, we take a trip back to high school and talk about the obstacles we faced as young women to define and qccept our identities. Celeste opens up about the pressure she felt to fit in at her homogenous, all-girls preparatory school. After being discovered as an actor, she began to meet other strong women of color who became friends, mentors, and inspirational figures in her life. Celeste then explains how she uses her platform to spread awareness about the causes she cares about and show young women that what's different makes you beautiful. I had such an amazing time speaking with Celeste and cannot recommend Selah and the Spades enough! You can watch it now on Amazon Prime to see for yourself.

JESSE SHUMAN - Let's Get Metaphysical
This week, I'm sharing a conversation I had a few weeks ago with my incredibly talented friend, Jesse Shuman! As a fellow Johns Hopkins alum, Jesse reflects on his own undergraduate experience and shares what it was like being an English major at a school known for medicine. In New York, Jesse works as an Editorial Assistant for Penguin Random House and reads hundreds of submissions a week! On this episode, he talks about the incredible power that literature has to hone in on human nature and teach us things about ourselves and our world. Specifically, fiction allows us to suspend our belief as we read something we know is false but still leave with tangible truths. I had an absolute BLAST talking with Jesse, and I really think you all will enjoy this episode as much as I do! If you so desire, you can follow Jesse's aesthetically pleasing Instagram page @jesseshu!

HANNAH BERNER - Finding Solace in Hell
By far and away the biggest highlight of my week was recording with comedian, Bravo TV star, and podcast legend, Hannah Berner (@beingbernz)! For those of you who don't know (but you seriously should), Hannah is a multi-talented idol of mine. When she's not living it up in the Hamptons to record Bravo's popular show Summer House, she is running a podcast called Berning in Hell where she talks to celebrities about how they cope with their demons. (Guys -- she got Drake Bell to open up about his insecurities!) I feel so lucky to have had her as a guest and discuss our common goal: reducing the stigma surrounding mental health by talking about it! I really think you guys will all enjoy this episode as much as I did, and please check out Hannah's podcast which comes out every Wednesday!

RIENNA RUSSO - Pandemic Panic
RIENNA RUSSO - Pandemic Panic
This week, I took a 45 minute break from social distancing to sit down with my incredibly smart, kind, and beautiful friend Rienna Russo! In addition to sharing my Johns Hopkins social experience, Rienna studied Public Health and Cognitive Science and got her Masters Degree in Infectious Diseases. It's safe to say that now is a very crazy time for her! I wanted to bring Rienna onto the podcast to explain what exactly is going on in the world and how it is affecting our mental health. With the help of Rienna, I used this episode as a way to separate fact from fiction, provide some advice, and hopefully qualm some fears. This is a terrifying and unprecedented time for our society, and I can barely wrap my head around my own current situation. That being said, I created this podcast to shed light on a shared loneliness. I thus wanted this episode to shed light on the fear we are all feeling, and I hope it brings some sort of comfort knowing we are together in our uncertainty.

NOAH KAHAN - Troubled Mind
This week I sat down with the incredibly talented singer and songwriter, Noah Kahan! Not only does Noah have the voice of an absolute angel (queue Hurt Somebody on Spotify) but he also had myself and @ali.puccio in hysteric bits of laughter for the entire hour of recording. Noah walked through his rise to stardom, from emo talent shows as an eight year old to LA record deals with Drake's agent at age seventeen. Despite this launch into fame, Noah is still the most humble person who also fights battles with his mental health. However, Noah is able to share his struggles through his music, connecting with listeners all across the globe. Recording this episode with Noah will absolutely go down as one of the best days of my life. Make sure to listen to its entirety, because there is an EXCLUSIVE SURPRISE at the end!

LINDSEY METSELAAR - We Met At Therapy
LINDSEY METSELAAR - We Met At Therapy
I cannot believe this is real life right now, because I was lucky enough to have Lindsey Metselaar as my guest on Solace and the City this week! Not only is she a millennial dating expert, but Lindsey is also the host of the first podcast that got me hooked, We Met At Acme. I was able to ask her all of the burning questions I had about the creation of her podcast, her support for mental health, and, of course, any advice she has on dating. I even got to hear Lindsey's thoughts on the polls she posts on her Instagram stories as we answered them in real time. Finally, you get to hear me talk about how much cooler and wiser my sister Eleni is than I am! For this reason and many more, I would advise everyone to listen to not only this episode but also every single episode of We Met At Acme. JONAH FEINGOLD - First Dates Jitters
This week I was able to sit down with film writer and director Jonah Feingold! A lover of "Harry Met Sally" types of movies, Jonah creates romantic comedies that depict the millennial dating culture. In addition to learning more about the inspiration behind some of Jonah's films, we talk about the effect that modern romance has on mental health and why the person who cares the least in a relationship has the most control. Finally, Jonah shares a not-so-fun fact (but crazy story) about himself and gives his opinion on Instagram crying selfies. Despite being one of the LEAST self-critical people I have had on the podcast, Jonah really helped shed light on what it's like being an eternal optimist and how we can all start loving ourselves more!
P.S. Keep your eyes out for Jonah's upcoming feature film @datingthemovie !

DYLAND PALLADINO - Analytical Thinking
This week I sat down with comedian and fellow podcaster Dylan Palladino! Although Dylan was a bit short on time, we were able to touch on a variety of topics including the struggle of being tall and good-looking, the anxiety that comes with being hyper-aware, and the keys to having a successful meditation practice. (I'm still working on incorporating his suggestions for my own daily practice.) Towards the end of the episode, Dylan gives advice on how to start an honest conversation about mental health and why making yourself vulnerable makes you a stronger person. I really loved speaking to Dylan and am so grateful for his recommendations on podcast equipment! I personally have been following The Strangers Project since 2011 and have modeled this podcast around his work, so having the opportunity to speak to Brandon and share his own story is an absolute dream come true. I promise that you all will gain something magical by listening to this episode and by following @strangersproj on Instagram, as it gives us all the chance to explore the lives of the people we share space with every day and see how wonderfully human we all are.

RAMSEY SHINDELL - Recovery and Discovery
RAMSEY SHINDELL - Recovery and Discovery
This week I had the great pleasure of sitting down and catching up with my friend Ramsey from high school! We first talked about the ways in which going to a boarding school impacted our teen years and gave some funny anecdotes from our individual experiences in high school. Ramsey then opened up about her year at a treatment center in Colorado and the lessons she took away from this mentally and physically-challenging experience. We then moved into talking about the ways social media and fake Instagram account specifically can be used as modes to express one's struggles and help others who may relate to the content that is posted. Finally, Ramsey explains what the hell TikTok is and her journey to gaining over 40,000 followers! I truly loved catching up with Ramsey and am so grateful for the love and support she has given me in the past. This is one of many reasons I am excited (and a bit nervous) to share our conversation with you all.
You can follow Ramsey on Instagram @gardeingirl or TikTok @lexaprolesbian

GREGORY UZELC - Alone 2gether
GREGORY UZELC - Alone 2gether
New episode out now! I sat down with an incredible artist, comedian, and friend Gregory Uzelac to talk about his exhibit "Alone 2gether" and so much more! First we discuss his experience growing up as the son of immigrants in New York City and navigating the cutthroat academic and social scene. We then delve into his journey to becoming an artist and the themes that he consistently incorporates into his work, including meme culture, DIY pornography, dating apps and the online intersection of sex, love, and commerce that has caused the tangible world to deteriorate under the perpetually unsatisfied desire for agency and community. Finally, we touch on the lasting effect of terrible NYC roommate situations and the paradox of loneliness in a city of 8.6 million people. This interview will truly open your eyes to so many different perspectives and thoughts, I truly think everyone will find something to take away from my conversation with Gregory.
P.S. Stay tuned for a BONUS segment at the end where we talk about the similarities between Love Island and Birthright, and Gregory explains to me what a "VSCO girl" is!
