ARI BORINSKY - The Ketamine Craze
This week I am so excited to share my conversation with Ari Borinsky, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy! (That's a lot of words, so let's break it down). Ari graduated from Columbia and became passionate about alternative medicines after attending his first ayahuasca retreat in Peru. When he started his own private practice, he knew that he wanted to incorporate some of the techniques he had learned from his mentors into his work. Now Ari incorporates ketamine into his psychotherapy sessions with clients, helping them to connect with their subconscious in a safe environment.
I literally knew nothing about KAP (ketamine-assisted psychotherapy) prior to chatting with Ari. I am so grateful for his kindness and wisdom, and I can't wait to see how the future of psychedelics unfolds! If you are interested in working with Ari, check out Brooklyn Psychedelic Psychotherapy in Greenpoint! https://www.brooklynpsychedelicpsychotherapy.com/

HOPE WOODARD - Tis The Season For Sobriety
The most-listened-to guest of Solace and the City is back and better than ever! I am SO excited to be sharing my second podcast conversation with Hope Woodard with you all. In this episode, Hope and I have a sobriety catch-up. When we first recorded back in January, I had been only 10 or so days sober, and Hope had been well over the year mark. Fast forward to this conversation, and I just hit my 300-day mark! Over these 300 days, Hope has been re-evaluating her relationship with alcohol and other substances. We talk about the real struggles that come with maintaining a soberish lifestyle and the importance of meeting yourself where you are. Hope shares her plans to be boy sober for the next year and explains her theory about jumping in and out of the wagon when it comes to her own journey cutting off substances. I really think you all will enjoy this episode, as Hope is truly amazing. Be sure to share it with your friends, follow @justhopinalong, and check out her new podcast Phone A Friend!

FELIX LEVINE — The Power of Podcasting

HANNA DICKINSON - Sobriety, STIs, Sexual Assault, and Solace
CW: This podcast contains content related to disordered eating and sexual assault. If at any point this episode becomes too triggering, please be sure to pause it and take some time to yourself. Furthermore, if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence or is struggling after an incident of sexual assault, help is available. The National Sexual Assault Hotline is 1-800-656-4673.
I feel incredibly honored to share this episode with NYC-based comic, writer, and actress, Hanna Dickinson. I first heard Hanna speak on one of my favorite female-led podcasts and was completely moved by her story. Most people go through one or two major traumas throughout their entire life. Hanna experienced multiple in the matter of months. In this episode, Hanna talks about what led her to become sober from alcohol and amphetamines. She talks openly about being abducted and raped on her 29th birthday in Los Angelos, as well as contracting an STI in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hanna's story is first and foremost a testimony of her resilience. Despite the many traumatic experiences that she has faced in her young adult life, Hanna keeps on fighting and finding the silver lining to push forward. She finds humor in even her darkest days and uses comedy as a therapeutic outlet to share her struggles. One of my favorite quotes from a guest of this podcast is, "laughter is the greatest disinfectant." Hanna embodies this quote more than anyone I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and I truly hope everyone takes a listen to her tale. You can keep up with Hanna by following her @hansdickie on Instagram.

NICK VIALL — We Create Our Own Chaos

28 Lessons Learned By 28
Welcome back to Season 5 of Solace and the City! I can't believe we are coming up on our fifth year of this show. For those who are new here, I launched Solace and the City back in October of 2019 on a complete whim. It's truly amazing to be here four years later looking back on all the incredible progress I have made no only on the show but also in my own life. In honor of my 28th birthday now behind me and the fifth year of this podcast quickly approaching, I decided to record an episode of 28 lessons that I have learned in my 28 years of life. This lists consists of a mix of pieces of advice I’ve been given, favorite quotes and sayings, tips and tricks from my therapist, and other lessons that I’ve been working on and will continue to work on in the years to come.
I am not easily able to talk about times when I am proud of myself, but there is one thing I am certain of - I am SO proud of this episode! It truly was a labor of love. It would warm my heart if everyone takes a listen, because I guarantee at least one of these lessons will resonate with you. Please feel free to share this episode with a friend, a partner, a roommate, a parent, or anyone else who you think could benefit from these tidbits of guidance.
Cheers to another year around the sun and many more to come! Love you all.

NASH JENKINS - Solace in the Cosmos
"When Foster Dade arrives at Kennedy, an elite boarding school in New Jersey, the year is 2008. Barack Obama begins his first term as president. Kanye West’s “Graduation” bumps from the newly debuted iPhone; teenagers share confidences and rumors over BlackBerry Messenger and iChat. The internet as we know it today is slowly emerging from its cocoon. So, too, is Foster emerging—a transfer student and lonely young man, Foster is stumbling through adolescence in the wake of his parents’ scandalous divorce and his own budding anxiety disorders. But Foster soon finds himself in the company of Annabeth Whittaker and Jack Albright, the twin centers of Kennedy’s social gravity, who take him under their wing to navigate the cliques and politics of the carelessly entitled.
Eighteen months later, Foster will be expelled, following a tragic scandal that leaves Kennedy and its students irreparably changed. But when a nameless student inherits Foster’s old dorm room, he begins an epic years long investigation into what exactly happened. Through Foster’s blog posts, playlists, text archives, and interviews with former classmates, and the narrator’s own obsessive imagination, a story unfurls—Foster’s, yes, but also one that asks us who owns our personal narratives, and how we shape ourselves to be the heroes or villains of our own stories.
Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos is about privilege and power, the pitfalls of masculinity and its expectations, and, most distinctly, how we create the mythologies that give meaning to our lives. With his debut novel, Nash Jenkins brilliantly captures the emotional intensities of adolescence in the dizzying early years of the twenty-first century."
Like myself, Nash as a new sophomore at a prestigious boarding school in New Jersey, and his time at Lawrenceville made an incredible impact on his life and his writing. In this podcast interview, Nash and I talk about the unique and complex nature of the boarding school experience, as well as the perfect and painful process of being a teenager with little sense of direction. I can honestly say that Foster Dade is one of the most beautiful and powerful books I have read in a very long time (and I have been reading a lot). To learn more about Nash and to buy his new book, you can visit: www.nashjenkins.com/ and follow him on Instagram @pnashjenkins.

LEO MASSEY - Is It Cultural Or Is It Concerning?

BROOKE SIEM - May Cause Side Effects
Brooke Siem was among the first generation of minors to be prescribed antidepressants. Initially diagnosed and treated in the wake of her father’s sudden death, this psychiatric intervention sent a message that something was pathologically wrong with her and that the only “fix” was medication. As a teenager, she stepped into the hazy world of antidepressants just at the time when she was forming the foundation of her identity. For the following fifteen years, every situation she faced was seen through the lens of brokenness. A decade and a half later, still on the same cocktail of drugs, Brooke found herself hanging halfway out her Manhattan high-rise window, calculating the time it would take to hit the ground. As she looked for breaks in the pedestrian traffic patterns, a thought dawned on her: “I’ve spent half my life—and my entire adult life—on antidepressants. Who might I be without them?”
Unfurled against a global backdrop, May Cause Side Effects is the gripping story of what happened when, after fifteen years and 32,760 pills, Brooke was faced with a profound choice that plunged her into a year of excruciating antidepressant withdrawal and forced her to rebuild her entire life.
My conversation with Brooke truly opened my eyes to the many issues with our medicated society and the perilous influence of Big Pharma. I would encourage everyone to take a listen to this podcast episode and to read Brooke's memoir. If you are considering waning of prescription medication, be sure to consult with your doctor. DR. SARAH CHURCH - How To Re-Evaluate Your Relationship With Alcohol
She completed a predoctoral fellowship in addiction at the Yale University School of Medicine and a postdoctoral year at the Substance Treatment and Research Service (STARS) at Columbia University Medical Center after graduating from Fordham University with a doctorate in clinical psychology and from Columbia University with an AB in psychology.
Dr. Church was appointed by Mayors Bloomberg and De Blasio to the NYC-DOHMH Community Services Board and serves on the Board of the Coalition of Medication Assisted Treatment Providers and Advocates (COMPA). She is a Past President for the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA). Internationally, she has provided consultation to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for both Vietnam and Afghanistan as they develop medication assisted treatment centers in their countries.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) found the following within American adults over the last year:
Nearly 67% drank alcohol within the last month;
28.6 million Americans were living with alcohol dependence; and
Less than 10% of people with past-year alcohol dependence receive any treatment.
National Alcohol Screening Day is April 6, a chance for to rethink your relationship with alcohol and its effects on your physical and mental well-being. Now is the time to dive in and help your audience learn more about the consequences of heavy drinking, screening tools available, and treatments available for those seeking help.

23 Things I Learned About Alcohol Once I Quit Drinking
When I first stopped drinking, I re-downloaded the app "I Am Sober" to start tracking my sobriety journey and ensure that I had something to hold myself accountable. Each day when you make a pledge to refrain from alcohol, the app gives you a fun little quote for motivation. On January 1st, the prompt I received was, "Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path." That quote has stuck with me over the past 100 days. I truly feel that the chaotic shit storm that was New Year Eve cleared a path to a new chapter of life. I'll be honest, whenever I used to hear my sober friends talking about how quitting drinking was the best choice they ever made, I used to think they were exaggerating. Now, I can confidently tell you that, if they feel the same way I do, they were 100% serious. I truly feel that I am a better friend, daughter, sister, and person without alcohol. Without a doubt, quitting drinking was the best decision I ever made for myself.

ARIELLA GROSSE, LMSW - How to Find Your Therapist Soulmate

ANNIE GRACE - This Naked Mind
At 26, Annie Grace was the youngest Vice President in a multinational company’s history, and her drinking career began in earnest; by 35, she was in a global C-level marketing role, responsible for 28 countries. Drinking close to two bottles of wine a night became a ritual. Annie Grace’s professional success came at a personal price she no longer wanted to pay. She knew alcohol was no longer serving her. Yet, she didn’t want to suffer through life in a daily battle for sobriety, feeling deprived and constantly trying to avoid temptation.
Annie Grace revamped her own relationship with alcohol — she stripped it of its power and changed her beliefs about booze being a reward — and today she helps others across the globe do the same. Her approach helps people where rehabs have not. She’s created a brand new way to look at the role of alcohol in our lives, establishing a safe space for those who question their drinking but haven’t self-diagnosed as alcoholics stuck in denial of an incurable disease. Annie Grace preaches compassion, knowing its power over shame and blame is the best way to achieve lasting change. And, she offers a proven alternative to the largely ineffective recipe for so-called “success”—the one that says anything less than 100% abstinence is failure. Annie Grace doesn’t teach people how to be sober; she helps them quash their desire to drink in the first place.

CARL RADKE - Alcohol's Leading Role in Reality Television
Summer House is a reality show featuring about ten professionals in their twenties and thirties who work in Manhattan and spend their summer weekends in a share house in Montauk. The show centers around the drama that inevitably unfolds over the course of the summer and the season. Carl has been a member of the cast since its 2017 inception, and the world has watched him go through numerous ups and downs. Perhaps one of the most heartbreaking of these intimate moments occurred in Season 6, when Carl discovered that his older brother had passed away from an overdose after a long battle with addiction and mental illness. The death of Carl's brother was a major reason why the reality TV star decided to reexamine his own drinking habits and eventually cut alcohol out of his life for good.
In this episode, I speak to Carl about his experience becoming sober after enduring such a tragedy. We also dive into other topics, including the invaluable role that alcohol plays in reality television. Be sure to listen to our conversation and then watch the newest episode of Summer House tonight at 9:00 PM EST. You can also follow Carl on Instagram @carlradke.

CHRIS SHATEK - Sobriety Preserves Our Most Precious Resource
Before becoming a life coach, Chris spent over 20 years in the radio business as an on-air personality. He entertained hundreds of thousands of people and met celebrities from Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Hulk Hogan, and Will Smith. While he loved his job in radio broadcasting, he wanted to do something that was more fulfilling. But before making this career switch, Chris had to overcome a 15-year habit of excessive drinking. Now he helps people find the peace that comes when alcohol is no longer running their lives. Chris works with people to change their relationship with alcohol, because what was once his weakness, is now his strength. You can follow Chris on Instagram and TikTok @sobercoachchris!

ALLY MCILWRAITH - Sobriety Gives So Much More Than It Takes
Without a doubt, my interview with Ally was one of my favorites to date. She shed light on all of the benefits of being sober, the ways in which the binge drinking culture has become so normalized in our society, and how removing alcohol from first dates has made dating so much more productive. (Don't worry -- we'll talk more about sober dating in episodes to come). I encourage everyone who has ever wanted to reevaluate their relationship with alcohol to listen to this episode. I promise you will NOT be disappointed!

CRISSY RODRIGUEZ - Finding Your Inner Child Through Sobriety
I'm officially fifteen days sober! When I first decided to create this "Solace and Sobriety" series, I spent hours scrolling through TikTok to find the perfect guests. I came across Crissy's profile and was so inspired by her own journey and decided to take a leap and send her a DM. Within a few hours, Crissy agreed to come on the podcast, and I am overjoyed to be sharing our conversation with you all! In this episode, Crissy talks about the ways in which the alcohol industry has made it seem impossible to stop drinking, how being sober has made her a better mother, and how being a mother has taught Crissy to be kinder to herself. You can follow Crissy's journey on TikTok and Instagram @imcrisssyrodriguez.

DR. JULIA STEINBERG - Mental Health in a Post-Roe America
This week I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Julia Steinberg, an Associate Professor of Family Science at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, to unpack the effect of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade on women's mental health. Julia Steinberg received a PhD in social psychology in 2008 from Arizona State University and completed the Charlotte-Ellertson postdoctoral fellow in reproductive health from 2008 to 2011 in the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Steinberg then was a faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at UCSF from 2011 to 2014. In January 2015, she joined the Department of Family Science. Steinberg's research is largely at the interplay of mental health and reproductive events or experiences.
One line of research, which we talk about in depth, examines whether abortion causes or increases the risk of mental health problems. Another line of research we discuss looks at the role of mental health in unintended pregnancy. Also, make sure to check out Aid Access, an organization that supports women, girls, trans men, nonbinary and all people with an unwanted pregnancy to access an abortion or miscarriage treatment -- https://aidaccess.org/en/

PARKER FOSTER - Progress Starts with Conversation

GIGI ROBINSON - Sports (Chronically) Ill-ustrated

MADDY PRICE - Runner's Highs and Lows
Maddy just barely missed the 2016 Canadian Olympic Team, the last race her dad ever saw, but then set her sights on Tokyo. Her road to Tokyo was filled with uncertainty, as she dealt with the passing of her dad from cancer, coming back from foot surgery a year before the Games, and navigating the global pandemic. Despite the odds, she made the Canadian 4x400 Olympic team and went on to run her fastest time ever in the finals with their team placing 4th. Far more important than the accomplishment of becoming an Olympian, is how she approached the process. With her family, and especially her dad, as inspiration, Maddy has always prioritized her relationships, staying present, and giving her best to everything she does. Maddy is an advocate and a mentor for the next generation of young female athletes through Voice In Sport, an advocacy platform providing resources and mentorship for girls in sport and through her work in 2020 with CAN Fund #150Women, a non-profit dedicated to helping Canadian female athletes be the best in the world.
In this episode with Maddy, we talk about her running career from childhood, to Duke, to a professional and now as an Olympian. We cover her emotional responses to the many steps in that process, and the mental habits that have allowed her to be successful. She is a ray of sunshine, and has so many nuggets about how to mentally approach sport and life. You can follow Maddy at @maddypriceless on Instagram and TikTok, and check out the video of Maddy’s journey to Tokyo here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3xtzpqhdpg

JOANNE IRIZARRY - Do It Scared
Joanne is such a special person, so I encourage everyone to listen to this episode and our previous conversation from last year. Make sure to follow @asafeplaceinsideyourhead to support the amazing work that she and Tanner are doing in the mental health community!
CW: This episode contains discussions about suicide and mental illness. I encourage everyone to listen, but be sure to pause the recording and take breaks if need be. Give yourself the grace you need and tune back in when you are ready.

EMILY AND LINDSAY STETZER - OCD and Me
First things first, I wanted to apologize for my two-week hiatus from posting episodes for Solace and the City. I discuss the reasons for my absence in the intro, but ultimately I can only attribute this to the difficulties of balancing a full-time job with a self-run podcast! Nevertheless, I am back with an incredible episode featuring the co-founders of Presently, Emily and Lindsay Stetzer. In this episode, I speak with Emily and Lindsay about their history dealing with OCD and how the obsessions and compulsions that they each battle differ. As someone who also suffers with OCD, I am able to share my personal experience and how it impacted my childhood and young adult life. Emily and Lindsay certainly turned lemons into lemonade by creating a jewelry company that pulls from lessons they learned from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. You can check out their beautiful creations on https://www.thinkpresently.com/ and follow them on Instagram @thinkpresently. Finally, I mention a YouTube video towards the end of the episode that had a major impact on my own personal growth. JACQUELINE TRUMBULL - Will You Accept This Trauma?
This week I had ANOTHER absolutely incredible conversation with Jacqueline Trumbull! Jacqueline is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology at Duke University and was able to share her insight into some very important mental health topics. Being that Jacqueline is both a psychology student and a Bachelor alum, she is able to speak to the ways in which the franchise commercializes vulnerability in a way that's unhealthy for all parties involved. We discuss the differences between authentic vulnerability and oversharing and how these two forms of communication impact our platonic and romantic relationships. Jacqueline also has a mental health podcast called A Little Help For Our Friends, where she offers advice on how to speak to and care for loved ones with mental illness. To learn more about Jacqueline and her podcast, follow @Trumbullina on Instagram!

NIGEL ROXBURY - These Streets Will Make You Feel Brand New
This week I was so lucky to sit down with content creator and New York City enthusiast, Chris Murch (a.k.a. Nigel Roxbury.) Despite originally moving from Austin (Hook 'Em!), Chris has always been fascinated by the story behind the most interesting and historical city in the country. He thus started making Tik Tok content to share his knowledge about NYC, which has quickly made him one of the top New York Specific creators on the platform. His passion and love for the city is infectious, and I feel truly honored to have had the opportunity to learn from him. To keep up with Chris, you can follow him on Instagram or Tik Tok @nigelroxbury -- and be sure to check out his music as well!

ILANA DUNN - Dating Sucks (But It Doesn't Have To!)
I am TOTALLY fangirling, because this past weekend I got to sit down and record with the host of one of my favorite dating podcasts, Ilana Dunn! Ilana is such a badass -- she went from a successful career in the music industry to working directly with Nick Jonas, and then ultimately she landed a job which essentially made her the face of Hinge. (Anyone heard of it?) Working for a dating app helped Ilana realize how much of an impact she could have by helping the hopelessly romantic navigate the murky, tumultuous waters of dating in NYC. She opened up about her personal breakups and heartbreaks to help show people that they were not alone in their romantic struggles. Now, Ilana channels her compassion for helping people into her awesome podcast, Seeing Other People! You can check our Ilana on Instagram @ilana.dunn and listen to Seeing Other People wherever you find your podcasts!

INDIA OXENBERG - Nightmare at NXIVM
This week, I had the privilege of speaking with India Oxenberg, activist, author, film producer, and former member of the NXIVM cult. At age 19, India and her mother attended a session of lectures that were part of the "Executive Success Program." Much like Sarah Edmondson, a former guest of Solace and the City, India had no idea that this program would change the course of her life forever. During our conversation, India discussed the horrific manipulation tactics orchestrated by Keith Raniere and Allison Mack, which ultimately caused her to lose sight of reality and remain faithful to the NXIVM cult. When she came across flash drives containing audio of Raniere masterminding DOS’s darkest details, India was finally able to see the light. In October of 2020, India released a four-part Starz docuseries called Seduced that she executive produced. The documentary gives audiences a more three-dimensional portrait of her, negating the media headlines that dismissed her as “a cult girl” or a “sex slave.” India also wrote a book about her experiences that she titled Still Learning, which is available on Audible.
I had such an incredible time speaking to India, and I encourage you all to watch Seduced, listen to Still Learning, and follow India on Instagram.

MITCHELL DAVIS - Keep Austin Wired
