Her debut novel 'The Wakes' (Hachette Australia) was published in early March 2023. Last year, Michelle's second novel 'Tiny Uncertain Miracles' was published by HarperCollins to widespread, critical acclaim.  A tender, funny, sad and sharply-drawn novel about family, friendship, faith, love, grief and alchemy.  I was thrilled to have the chance to speak with Michelle about it recently on the podcast.

Talking Aussie Books with Ashley Kalagian Blunt

Talking Aussie Books with Ashley Kalagian Blunt

I first interviewed Canadian-born Ashley Kalagian Blunt in 2019 when her debut book 'My Name is Revenge' was published. Since, Ashley has published a memoir ‘How to Be Australian’ along with other writing which has appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, Overland, the Griffith Review of Books and Kill Your Darlings, just to name a few. Ashely also teaches creative writing and co-hosts the popular podcast “James and Ashley Stay at Home” - a podcast about writing, creativity and health. And this year, Ashley can add another feather to her already-crowded cap, with the publication of her much anticipated crime thriller novel ‘Dark Mode’. A compulsive, highly relevant and riveting book, 'Dark Mode' will have you guessing until the very end. A chilling insight into the dangers we face every day, 'Dark Mode' shines a spotlight on the darkest and most disturbing aspects of society. An absolute must-read for all crime fiction fans. I was thrilled to welcome Ashley back to the podcast a few weeks ago.

Talking Aussie Books with Dinuka McKenzie

Talking Aussie Books with Dinuka McKenzie

Last year I was privileged to interview an award-winning novelist whose debut novel became an overnight sensation.  As the winner of the illustrious Banjo Prize in 2020, Dinuka McKenzie quickly became a household name when her book 'The Torrent' was published by HarperCollins at the beginning of 2022.  Now, in 2023, Dinuka has followed up on the success of 'The Torrent' with another brilliant book - 'Taken'. In this novel, we pick up where 'The Torrent' left off.  Tense and page-turning, this story had me invested from the get-go - riding alongside Detective Kate Miles as she navigates the emotional rollercoaster that is her life.   I was delighted to have the chance to speak with Dinuka about 'Taken' earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Holly Ringland

Talking Aussie Books with Holly Ringland

just over four years ago, I had the very great fortune to interview an outstanding debut novelist. I was relatively new to the world of podcasting then, still finding my way and consequently, feeling like I’d won the lottery when I was handed the opportunity to speak with this brilliant author. Listeners, I know you will feel my joy and nerves in equal measures when I tell you that author was Holly Ringland. The much-celebrated creator of the world-wide phenomenon that was and still is 'The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart' published by HarperCollins. Once I had recovered from my terror, speaking to Holly who was in England at the time, became a conversation I would never forget. It was overwhelming to speak with this incredible woman who has become an inspirational figure for women and writers around the globe. And to my utter amazement, I got to do it all again. This time in honour of Holly’s second novel, 'The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding'. I was honoured to welcome Holly back to the podcast late last year.

Talking Aussie Books with Emma Harcourt

Talking Aussie Books with Emma Harcourt

Emma Harcourt is a Sydney-based writer who works a researcher and journalist as well as an author. After completing the Faber Academy course in 2011, Emma began writing historical fiction. The result was two novels: the first being the critically acclaimed international best-selling title 'The Shanghai Wife' published in 2018 and now 'The Brightest Star' released earlier this year by HQ Fiction. Whilst I haven’t read 'The Shanghai Wife' yet, I was utterly enthralled by Luna’s story in 'The Brightest Star'. As a fan of historical fiction in general, this book was a page-turning read giving its audience insight into the plight of women in Renaissance Florence - which sadly still echoes in parts of the world today. I was excited to have the chance to speak with Emma in more detail about the book on the podcast a little while ago.

Talking Aussie Books with Eliza Henry-Jones

Eliza Henry-Jones is a Victorian author, freelance writer, Phd candidate and flower farmer whose previous novels have been listed for multiple literary awards. Her work has been published in a variety of places - including The Guardian, Country Style and The Age amongst others. In 2017, a trip to the remote Orkney Islands of Scotland highlighted Eliza’s preoccupation with hauntings and the interplay between places and traumatic events. This in turn inspired her latest novel. Called 'Salt and Skin' (Ultimo Press), Eliza has drawn on her experience of the Orkney Islands and penned an evocative novel steeped in history and folklore. It’s a book that explores love and family, grief and trauma and the way past hurts can continue to affect the present. An utterly mesmerising read that I was hard-pressed to put down. I was delighted to chat with Eliza about her novel on the podcast earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Nina Kenwood

Talking Aussie Books with Nina Kenwood

I love reading all types of books.  Crime, thriller, domestic noir, family drama, YA, magical realism and romance.  You name it, I probably have it on my shelf.   But there's nothing quite like reading a rom-com for pure escapism and sheer joy.  And that's what reading Nina Kenwood's 'Unnecessary Drama' was for me.  Published by Text Publishing earlier this year, 'Unnecessary Drama' was a laugh-out-loud, thoroughly delightful, feel-good novel about moving out of home, life as a uni student, falling in love and dealing with what Nina refers to in the book as an 'anxious brain'.  A book which can be enjoyed equally by young adults as well as a more mature audience. I had a terrifically entertaining chat with Nina on the podcast earlier this year.

Called 'A Recipe for Family' (Simon & Schuster), this novel examines modern motherhood, how food connects us and what it means to be a family.  An intelligent, insightful and relatable novel that will appeal for food lovers and readers alike. I was delighted to welcome Tori to the podcast earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Vikki Petraitis

Vikki Petraitis is the author of the best-selling true crime books "The Frankston Murders" and "The Phillip Island Murder" as well as a podcaster - making two highly successful podcasts with Case File Presents: series which have topped charts around the world and enjoyed millions of downloads.  More recently, Vikki won the inaugural Allen & Unwin Crime prize with her first work of fiction "The Unbelieved" (published earlier this year). Devouring it from cover to cover, I understood why this manuscript took out the prize.  Empowering, explosive, gritty and insightful, "The Unbelieved" is a novel that should be on everyone's must-read list.  I was thrilled to have the chance to chat with Vikki about her remarkable book on the podcast earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Denise Picton

Talking Aussie Books with Denise Picton

Denise Picton's debut novel "The Family String" (Ultimo Press) is a poignant, beautifully written novel about a difficult mother-daughter relationship which explores mental health issues in the context of a faith that could not understand such issues along with the way children cope with family dynamics. An uplifting, but at times heart-breaking novel capturing the unique, irrepressible voice of its 12 year-old protagonist Dorcas Wilson.  I loved it and was delighted to welcome Denise to the podcast earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Mercedes Mercier

Mercedes Mercier is author of the electric debut novel "White Noise" published by HarperCollins Australia earlier this year. Drawn from Mercedes' real-life experiences working in the Australian corrections system for almost a decade, "White Noise" is a triumph of a novel.  I was utterly mesmerised by the world Mercedes created - exploring the ongoing effects of trauma and addiction and offering a chilling insight into the mind of a psychopath.   A brilliant read for lovers of crime and psychological thrillers.  Tune into the fabulous chat I recorded with Mercedes a little while back.

Talking Aussie Books with Rachael Johns

Talking Aussie Books with Rachael Johns

Rachael Johns has been described as the 'undisputed queen of Australian women's fiction' and with a whopping 29 titles under her belt to date, I'm sure you'll agree it's an apt title.  An award-winning author with her own online bookclub - membership of which has now reached some 5000 members - Rachael is a force to be reckoned with.   I was more than a little delighted to have the chance to speak with Rachael ahead of the release of her new novel, 'The Work Wives' (HQ Fiction).  A fun chat in which Rachael gives us some insight into her writing process and how she manages to pump out two titles a year, read voraciously as well as keep up with all her other work-related commitments.  An episode not to miss!

Talking Aussie Books with Katharine Pollock

Talking Aussie Books with Katharine Pollock

Katharine Pollock's debut novel 'Her Fidelity' (published by Penguin) is a wonderfully insightful book that takes a humorous look at the record industry from the point of view of female retail worker. A sharply-drawn snapshot of contemporary Australian society and exploration of what it means to be a woman working in a male-dominated industry, 'Her Fidelity' was funny and sobering at the same time.  Highly recommended! I welcomed Katharine to the podcast a little while back and had a fabulous, wide-ranging chat.

Talking Aussie Books with Petronella McGovern

Talking Aussie Books with Petronella McGovern

Petronella McGovern is a Sydney based author of three novels - all born of her fascination with people - what makes us tick, how we view the world and the lies we tell each other and ourselves. She exploded onto the literary scene with her brilliant debut, Six Minutes in 2019 and quickly followed it up with The Good Teacher in 2020. This year she’s back with another fabulous novel. A gripping, edge-of-your seat psychological suspense thriller that will have you flipping pages til the heart-stopping end. Published by Allen & Unwin, this is a novel that truly showed Petronella’s penchant for story-telling with its rich, multi-layered narrative along with its cracking pace.  A book that takes a deep dive into some of Australia’s tragic secrets…as well as the experience of being a teenager in today’s society and whether things ever really change from one generation to the next. I was thrilled to welcome Petronella back to the podcast earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Victoria Purman

Talking Aussie Books with Victoria Purman

Victoria Purman is an Adelaide-based author whose books tend to be on the automatic-buy list for many readers - and with good reason.  'The Nurses' War' is Victoria's latest novel - released earlier this year by HarperCollins Australia.  A stunning examination of the battle fought by Australian nurses against despair and death amid the carnage and bloodshed of World War 1.   Such a compelling, insightful and poignant read, I simply had to chat with Victoria about it.

Talking Aussie Books with Lucy Christopher

In 2013, British-Australian writer Lucy Christoper published her debut novel 'Stolen'. An award-winning YA novel, 'Stolen' is the story of 16 year-old Gemma Toombs who is kidnapped from Bangkok Airport and held captive in the Australian outback by her capture Tyler McFarlane.  This year, the long-awaited companion to this incredible story was published by Text Publishing.   'Release' explores Gemma's journey as an adult survivor and her quest to discover the truth about her complicated relationship with Ty.  A gripping psychological thriller/court-room drama that had me utterly hooked from start to finish.  Lucy and I enjoyed a wide-ranging, fascinating chat about this novel earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Greg Woodland

Talking Aussie Books with Greg Woodland

Early last year I chatted with debut novelist Greg Woodland about his thrilling crime novel, 'The Night Whistler' (Text Publishing). I’d met Greg at a crime fiction festival the year before and heard about his book and how it was inspired by events from his own childhood. Clearly I wasn't the only person who though this novel was terrific - since 'The Night Whistler' went on to be shortlisted for Best Debut Crime Fiction in the 2021 Ned Kelly Awards. This year Greg is back with a sequel to that novel. ‘The Carnival Is Over’ picks up some years after the events in 'The Night Whistler'. And in a hair-raising, gripping rollercoaster ride, we are once more plunged into the rural town of Moorabool with Senior Constable Mick Goodenough, along with the now grown-up Hal and Allie, trying to solve a murder mystery and in the process uncovering some of the town’s deepest and darkest secrets. I absolutely loved this book and was delighted to welcome Greg back to the podcast a while back.

Talking Aussie Books with Alex Sarkis

Talking Aussie Books with Alex Sarkis

Not only do books help us escape our everyday lives, but enable us to see ourselves reflected in them.  Stories represent human experiences and showcase situations we are familiar with.  So when we read about characters we're familiar with or who may look and act the same way, it helps us understand how we fit in. Reading Alex Sarkis's debut novel, "Something Blue" (Ultimo Press) did this for me.   In it, I found characters who were familiar.  People I'd grown up around and people with whom I shared a similar heritage.   A clever and entertaining book about going back to your cultural roots.  I was thrilled to speak with Alex about her debut on the podcast a little while back.

Through this podcast, Dani has championed hundreds of authors and their work, interviewed other podcasters like me, supported festivals and garnered much respect and admiration from all who have had the very great fortune to find themselves in her orbit. Earlier this month, Dani’s debut fiction title made its way into the world. Talking Aussie Books with Jules Van Mil

Talking Aussie Books with Jules Van Mil

Jules Van Mil is a Sydney-based author with a long and varied career that, in 2020 finally culminated in her realising her dream to be a published author. Her first book, a middle-grade story for 8-12 year olds was called “Gemma Riley and the Fashion Fiasco” - a delightful story that most certainly was spawned from Jules’s own experiences as a teacher and fashion designer. Fast forward two years and Jules has dipped her toe in the world of adult fiction with her stunning book “A Remarkable Woman”. Released by Pan Macmillan earlier this year, “A Remarkable Woman” is the story of Avril Montdidier - a young French woman who migrated to Australia following the end of WW2 determined to follow her dream of opening her own fashion business. A truly delightful story that spans from postwar Paris to Australia - giving us a glimpse into what life was like for women in 1950s Australia and the barriers they faced forging their paths to a financial independence. I was fortunate to have the chance to speak with Jules about this book a little while ago.

Talking Aussie Books with Lyn Yeowart

Talking Aussie Books with Lyn Yeowart

**Trigger warning: this episode contains discussion of domestic abuse, family violence and coercive control and may be distressing to some listeners.** After listening to Melbourne-based Lyn Yeowart read an extract from the Prologue of her debut novel. "The Silent Listener" (Penguin) at the BAD Sydney Crime Festival last year, I knew I just had to find out more about her inspiration for writing it.  Set in rural Victoria and moving back and forwards between the 1940s, 1960s and 1980s, "The Silent Listener" is a brilliantly crafted story about secrets and lies and the lengths a small community will got to protect a monster - delivering a shocking twist I didn't see coming.  I was thrilled to have the chance to speak with Lyn about it earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Dime Sheppard

Talking Aussie Books with Dime Sheppard

"Crime Writer" by Brisbane author Dime Sheppard is unlike any other book I have read.   A gripping novel about an author suffering severe writer's block when faced with the task of writing her 16th novel. She doesn't quite know how to overcome this, but when the characters that usually live in her head start appearing in her apartment and voicing their own opinions about what she should do...well, things don't quite go how she would expect them to. I was prepared for a "Castle" meets "Murder She Wrote" kind of experience. But it was nothing like it.  I absolutely loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed my chat with Dime earlier this year.

Talking Aussie Books with Zoë Coyle

Talking Aussie Books with Zoë Coyle

Zoë Coyle's debut novel "Where the Light Gets In" is a novel inspired by Zoe's advocacy for euthanasia law and the right to die with dignity, an issue that affected Zoë personally when her terminally ill mother decided to euthanise herself.  Published by Ultimo Press earlier this year, Zoë's novel is a moving tribute to the inadequacies of a system which refuses to make room for a person's desire to die with dignity, the legacy of grief created by that injustice and a story which is testament to the enduring connection between mothers and daughters.  A stunning debut.  And what a conversation I enjoyed with the lovely Zoë (who, it turns out I had already been acquainted with through our own daughters). What a small world! Happy listening!

Released by Penguin earlier this year, it's a sweeping saga depicting the harshness of life on the land in 19th century New South Wales.  A story set in the dying days of the riverboat trade along the Darling River.  Captivating, heartbreaking but not without humour, I was enthralled by this glimpse into a by-gone era.  Loved my chat with Nicole recorded a little while back.

Lyn McFarlane is a Canadian-Australian writer and lawyer whose debut novel. 'The Scarlet Cross' was recently released by Pantera Press.   A complex and intriguing crime thriller that takes a thought-provoking look at the healthcare system along with the justice system in North America.  So very topical in light of recent events in the United States.   Clever and twisty, this book held me in its clutches as I raced to the last page, desperate to know how it would all end.  I was delighted to speak with Lyn on the podcast a little while back.

Listeners will know that I have eclectic reading tastes - with a particular interest in domestic thrillers.  So when I picked up Kylie Kaden's new book, "One of Us" (Pantera), I knew I was in for a treat.  A book that takes us well beyond the picket fence. "One of Us" exposes the imperfect lives of two seemingly perfect families.  Covering some big issues, this book was pacey and complex, with an intricately woven plot that had me guessing til the very end.  Highly recommended reading for lovers of crime and domestic thrillers. Talking Aussie Books with Lee Christine

Talking Aussie Books with Lee Christine

As an avid (somewhat amateurish skier), I am captivated by alpine landscapes. So when I learnt about a series of crime books set in the Australian Snowy Mountains, I was intrigued.   Lee Christine has made her mark on the Australian literary scene with six romantic suspense novels along with her series of snow-bound crime thrillers.  The latest of these is 'Dead Horse Gap' published by Allen & Unwin earlier this year.  Atmospheric, evocative and page-turning, I loved every minute of my time with Lee's characters.  And so it was with much delight that I welcomed Lee to the podcast a little while back.

Hilde Hinton is a bestselling author of two books and big sister to Connie and Samuel Johnson. Her debut novel, "The Loudness of Things Unsaid" propelled Hilde reluctantly into the literary realm. Released earlier this year, "A Solitary Walk on the Moon" (published by Hachette) is a delightful, tender and warm tale about ordinary people who make a difference and also about finding family outside of blood ties. A story which I suspected reflected elements of Hilde's extraordinary life. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with Hilde about this book on the podcast a little while ago.

A book which occupies a spot on the short list of books in recent times that has made me cry. A beautifully written and heart-achingly real portrayal of grief and guilt. Earlier this year Monique released her brand new novel, "Wildflower" (Pilyara Press). And, you guessed it...I cried AGAIN! "Wildflower" is a gut-wrenching novel about the effects of domestic violence on women and children. It shines a light on an insidious problem through the eyes of an 11 year-old girl in the summer of 1979/1980. A stunning novel that I cannot recommend highly enough. Discussion around consent and sexual violence experienced by girls and women in educational institutions and the toxic culture engendered by these institutions has been a topic that has dominated headlines in recent years. It's a discussion that is slowly filtering its way into high school curriculums and hopefully leading to a change in what young women and men think of as healthy, respectful sexual encounters and relationships. And in a critically acclaimed debut novel called "Love & Virtue" (Ultimo Press), Diana Reid is contributing to that ongoing discussion with a fascinating work that explores this and other issues in the context of a contemporary university setting. A book that will challenge our notions of material wealth and morality, consent and context along with how we decide what is right or wrong in any particular situation. A fascinating read. Talking Aussie Books with Léonie Kelsall

In mid-2020 I had the happy privilege of chatting with rural fiction author, Léonie Kelsall about her gorgeous book, "The Farm at Peppertree Crossing". With its well developed characters and strong sense of place, it was a book that offered humour and hope and a way of making sense of some of the tough issues often faced by our rural neighbours. So I guess it comes as no surprise to learn that this book went onto become a national best-seller. This year, Lee is back with her second rural fiction title, "The Wattleseed Inn" (Allen & Unwin). And it's another winner! A warm and wonderful story filled with loveable, yet flawed characters along with a large dose of country charm. It's a must-read for lovers of Australian contemporary fiction. A perfect balance of romance, drama and an exploration of deeper themes that speak to modern audiences. The perfect anti-dote to lockdown blues. I was excited to welcome Lee back to the podcast.
